MANHATTAN, Kan – Fort Hays State opened the second half on a 10-2 run to pull within five points of Kansas State, but the Wildcats responded with a 10-2 run to push the lead back to 13 and beat the Tigers 70-52 in an exhibition game Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Game Highlights

K-State hit their first three 3-pointers to grab a 9-0 lead to start the game but the Tigers regrouped to pull within nine late in the first half. KSU scored the final four points to close out the first half and led 37-24 at halftime.

FHSU was held to 34-percent shooting and were just 5-for-25 from 3-point range. Kansas State hit 42-percent and was 6-for-22 from beyond the arc. FHSU was only outrebounded by the bigger Wildcats by three.

Craig Nicholson and Dom Samac both scored nine points to lead FHSU in scoring. Hadley Gillum added seven. Wesley Iwundo led the Wildcats with 17 points, Justin Edwards added 14 and Stephen Hurt 13.

FHSU volleyball squanders lead; falls in five sets to Missouri Western

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State squandered a golden opportunity to knock off Missouri Western on Friday evening. Up 2-1 in the match, FHSU had a four-point fourth set lead vanish as MWSU evened the match and then took the final set 15-11 to escape Hays with a win. Hitting and serving errors were a sore thumb for the Tigers in a match where they dominated almost every major stat category.

Looking at the final box score, one would think FHSU ran away with the match. FHSU had 69 kills compared to 44 for MWSU. The Tigers outhit the Griffons .179 to .104. FHSU had 111 digs to 96 for MWSU. FHSU tallied 82 points in the match to just 64 for MWSU. But it still was not enough as mental mistakes and errors proved too costly.

Missouri Western (20-6, 11-3 MIAA) recorded 14 blocks in the match, but 18 of Fort Hays State’s hitting errors were unforced. The Tigers had eight blocks in the match as 16 of Missouri Western’s attacking errors were unforced. There were just too many errors of other varieties for FHSU, including eight servce errors, six reception errors, five blocking errors, and eight ball-handling errors.

The match was a defensive battle with massive amounts of digs racked up by both teams. Ari Jacobsen tied the third-most digs recorded in a match during the rally scoring era at FHSU with 39, just six shy of the school record. Crystal Whitten finished with 25 and Mallory Flagor had 17 for the Tigers. On the Missouri Western side, five players reached double figures in digs with Kayla Ruff’s 24 leading the way.

After Missouri Western took the opening set 25-21, FHSU dominated the second and third sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-18. The Tigers outhit the Griffons .227 to .059 in the second set and .225 to .000 in the third set. It felt as though the Tigers were going to run away with the match in four sets, but the momentum shifted back to the Griffons midway through the fourth. The Tigers even took a 5-1 lead in the fifth set and looked to be running away again, but the Griffons stormed back once more. Unfortunately, the Tigers committed three consecutive errors for the final three points of the match.

Rebekah Spainhour had a great match offensively with 17 kills and just two errors to hit .441. Whitten and Flagor each had 16 kills to record double-doubles with their dig counts. Sydney Dixon had 11 kills. Hannah Wagy had 61 assists, but struggled with control at times recording seven ball-handling errors.

Shellby Taylor led the Griffons with 12 kills, while Blair Russell added 10. Jordon Chohon had a double-double of 36 assists and 21 digs.

The Tigers, now 18-12 overall and 7-8 in the MIAA, look to bounce back on Saturday (Nov. 7) when they host Northwest Missouri State at 2 pm.

Upper Iowa defeats FHSU men’s soccer; takes MIAA title

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team saw their MIAA Championship hopes disappear on Friday night. The 25th-ranked Tigers needed two wins in their last two regular season games to clinch the title for the first time in school history, but came up short suffering a 1-0 loss to 20th-ranked Upper Iowa.

The first half was a defensive battle with only two shots in the half, both from the Peacocks. The Tigers had a couple good looks, but the Peacock defense was able to thwart the opportunities before the Tigers could get a shot off.

In the second half the Tigers were able to get off eight shots, including three on goal, but Upper Iowa goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt was up to the task of saving everything sent his way.

Fort Hays State goalkeeper Michael Yantz was equally impressive on the night with three saves, including one impressive diving stop early in the first half to keep the game all square. At the 78:46 mark, the Peacocks were able to find a way to get the ball past Yantz. After a Tiger foul down the left side of the 18 yard box the Peacocks were awarded a free kick. The ball was crossed into the box by Rhys Williams and Yantz was able to get a piece of it but not enough as the ball bounced to Johnny McBeth and he was able to tap it in for his third goal of the season. That was all Upper Iowa needed to claim the 2015 MIAA Men’s Soccer Championship.

Fort Hays State has one remaining regular season game that takes place on Sunday against Lindenwood. Fort Hays State entered the week ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Central Region Rankings.

FHSU women’s soccer forces overtime; falls to No. 9 Central Missouri in MIAA Semifinals

FHSU Athletics

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State rallied to force overtime against No. 9 Central Missouri in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals on Friday, however, the rally came up short as the Jennies scored at 99:01 to end the match and the Tigers’ season by a score of 3-2. Fort Hays State finished the year with a record of 11-8-1.

The Jennies took the early lead when Hailey Womack was able to get her head on a free kick from Callie Henshaw into the back of the net in the 33rd minute.

Shortly afterwards the Jennies were able to extend their lead to 2-0 when Mikala Modiri took a pass from Emily Franchett and beat FHSU keeper Abbie Flax for her seventh goal of the season with 9:35 remaining in the half.

Before the half ended Kelsey Steffens was able to bring the Tigers back within one when Reagan Lawler launched a ball that found Steffens, and with an aggressive keeper out of position Steffens fired the ball across the line for her fourth goal of the season at the 41:35 mark.

The Tigers were able to tie the game up with just under 14 minutes to play in the second half when Cenayda Guzman leveled the score with her third goal of the season (all in consecutive games). Hannah Jurgens provided the pass as the Tigers had a top-10 ranked Central Missouri squad sweating once again. The Tigers upset the Jennies earlier this year in Hays when UCM was No. 1 in the nation by a score of 2-1.

A rally for a second victory over the Jennies this year came up short when Megan Wooley of UCM ended the game 59 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. She took an assist from Jada Scott for the game winner.

Fort Hays State had a tremendous run down the final stretch of the season, winning four consecutive matches before the loss to UCM. Impressively, the Tigers did it with limited subs due to several injuries. Fort Hays State finished in fourth place in the MIAA regular season standings at 7-4.

No. 2 Baylor holds off pesky K-State 31-24 to stay perfect

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Jarrett Stidham threw for 419 yards and three scores in his first start, Corey Coleman caught a pair of touchdown passes and No. 2 Baylor held on for a 31-24 victory over pesky Kansas State on Thursday night to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Stidham, taking over for the injured Seth Russell, also ran for a touchdown to help the Bears (5-0 Big 12, No. 6 CFP) improve to 8-0 for only the second time in school history.

The freshman quarterback’s favorite target was Coleman, who caught 11 passes for 216 yards while pushing his nation-leading total to 20 touchdown receptions.

Kansas State got to 31-24 on Joe Hubener’s touchdown pass to Deante Burton with 4:07 left, and Chris Callahan’s missed field goal with 51 seconds remaining gave the Wildcats a chance.

But on their first play, Hubener threw a lateral to wide receiver Cody Cook, who then threw down the sideline. The sometimes-quarterback’s pass was picked off by Terrell Burt, who managed to get his right foot down inbounds, and the interception stood after an official’s review.

Baylor ran out the clock to drop Kansas State (3-5) to 0-5 in conference play for the first time since 1989, the first season for coach Bill Snyder on the sideline.

Black tops Gold 20-19 in evenly matched Black and Gold Scrimmage

FHSU Athletics

The Fort Hays State wrestling team held its first home event of the 2015-16 season on Thursday (Nov. 5) with its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage.

The Gold team took started off with a big victory when transfer from Labette Community College, Derrick Gates defeated Jace Nordyke by a major decision (13-2) in the 165-pound class.

The Black team came roaring back in the 285-pound weight class after Zach Keraney took advantage of a Dakota Gulley wrong turn and pinned him in 3:36.

Senior and two-year starter Adam Ludwin took on Cornell College transfer Vikash Hypio at 125 pounds. Ludwin won by decision, 7-3, having one take down per period, and gave the Gold an advantage once again at 7-6.

The 141-pound class was a battle between two experienced wrestlers, Tyler Dryden and Jacob Kay. Dryden fared better in the matchup pulling away by decision for the Gold team, 6-2, widening the lead to 10-6.

Noah Killip and Matt Ziegler battled at the 149 pounds. Killip, who was a national qualifier at 141 pounds last year, came out on top with a first period fall at the 2:47 mark. That extended the Gold lead to 16-6.

Joey Dozier and Bradley Little was the feature match of the night at 157 pounds. Both wrestlers are seniors and returning starters. After neither scored in the first period, Dozier earned two back points. Little was able to break free and get a reversal before the second period ended, tying the score at 2-2. After a Little take down in the third, Dozier was able to earn an escape to bring the score back to 4-3. Little was finally able to seal the deal with one more take down to earn the decision for Black, 6-4, as Dozier had a riding time point applied at the end.

Nathan Shipley and Ethan Dale battled it out in the 174 pound weight class. Like the match before it was scoreless after the first period. Shipley earned an escape in the second period, but Dale was able to get a reversal and a riding time bonus point to hold off Shipley for a 3-2 win for the Black team. That put the score at 16-12 in favor of Gold.

True freshman Jordan Davis showed he has plenty of upside as he took on one of the team’s top wrestlers, Jon Inman, in the 184-pound match. Davis held his own against the preseason No. 6 wrestler in the country, only down two points after the first period. Inman then hit the gas pedal by earning an escape to start the second period and three takedowns on the way to an 11-3 win. The win for Inman knotted the score at 16-16.

After defeating Nordyke earlier in the evening, Derrick Gates wrestled a second match against Kregg Clarke. It was a back and forth battle for the entire match but Gates proved victorious once more by 9-6 decision, putting Gold on top 19-16.

The final matchup of the evening was a heavyweight bout between Zach Kearney, who defeated Gulley earlier in the evening, and Justin Scott. Scott was in full control the entire match recording a take down and a two-point near fall in the first period and then an escape and take down in the second. Throw in a riding time point and he walked away with the major decision for the black team by the score of 8-0. The riding time point helped Black push over the top of Gold 20-19 and avoid a tie.

Results of exhibition matches:

Christian Lewis defeated Jake Schoenfeld by decision 9-4.

Rakim Dean defeated Christian Lanceby decision 3-2.

Several Tiger wrestlers will be heading to Lindsborg, Kan., on Saturday to officially open the season at the Bethany College Open.

Royals exercise options on Escobar, Davis; Gomes declined

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The World Series champion Kansas City Royals have exercised their $8 million option on All-Star closer Wade Davis and a $5.25 million option on All-Star shortstop Alcides Escobar, while declining a $3 million option on outfielder Jonny Gomes.

The moves Thursday came one day All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon declined his $13.75 million player option and the Royals declined options on outfielder Alex Rios and starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie.

Davis took over as the closer when Greg Holland required Tommy John surgery late in the season. He wound up saving four games in the playoffs, and recorded the final out in the 12th inning of Game 5 against the New York Mets to wrap up the World Series.

Escobar, a Gold Glove finalist, was MVP of the AL Championship Series.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 4/5 Kansas men’s basketball opened the 2015-16 season with a 89-66 exhibition win over Pittsburg State on Wednesday night inside historic Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks relied on 46 points from their big men to notch the 43rd-straight exhibition win in Lawrence.

Senior forward Perry Ellis led the way with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 15 second-half points, in 24 minutes of action. Senior forward Hunter Mickelson tallied 10 points on 5-of-6 from the field with six rebounds in just 13 minutes. Freshman forward Carlton Bragg Jr. made his debut as a Jayhawk with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting in 21 minutes.

Bragg made a balanced impact for the Jayhawks from start to finish. From the first play in the game, the Cleveland, Ohio, product showed the sheer versatility of his game on a high-low pass from the top of the key to assist Mickelson with an easy layup on the blocks at 14:30 mark of the first half. Bragg followed-up with a fast-break alley-oop dunk from a half-court pass from Frank Mason III which gave KU a 12-11 lead.

Kansas drained consecutive 3-pointers to jump-start an 18-5 run in the last five minutes of the first half and makeup for a sluggish start, which featured nine combined fouls in the first five minutes of the game.

Wayne Selden, Jr. started the run by draining KU’s first 3-pointer of the night at the 4:36 mark of the first half, followed by a trey from Brannen Greene on the next possession to give KU a 31-23 lead. Kansas went into the locker room with a 46-28 halftime lead after Lagerald Vick snuck in a last-second fast break layup to give KU its 18-point lead, which also marked the freshman’s first basket inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Pitt State’s Josiah Gustafson was the first player to double figures with a lay-up at 19:08 in the second half. Gustafson finished with 20 points, while Jaxon Holden registered 12 points on four of the Gorillas’ seven 3-pointers on the night.

Offense came quicker and more efficient to the Jayhawks in the second half. After taking nearly two minutes for Kansas to score its opening bucket of the game, the Jayhawks opened the second half at a much quicker pace as Mason notched a layup in the first 20 seconds. KU shot 55.9 percent in the second half, 13.8 percentage points higher than the opening period.

Kansas led by as many as 25 points with 2:43 left in the game, enabling Coach Bill Self to clear the bench and use all 14 game-eligible Jayhawks on the roster, including the career debut for sophomore walk-on Clay Young.

A pair of dunks from Bragg in the last five minutes of the game closed out the Jayhawks’ 43rd straight exhibition victory at Allen Fieldhouse by a score of 89-66.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved on to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament by defeating the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist on Wednesday 2-1. The fourth-seeded Tigers pushed their win streak to four matches and move on to face No. 1 seed Central Missouri on its home field in Warrensburg, Mo., on Friday.

Cenayda Guzman got the Tigers on the board first, when she was able to place a header off a corner kick from Vianei Sanchez in the back of the net at 60:00.

After a hard foul just outside the SBU box Jasmine Beaulieu rifled a laser free kick past the Bearcat keeper extending the Tiger lead to 2-0 with just 4:31 remaining in the game.

SBU did not go down without a fight as 2014 MIAA Offensive Player of the Year Karla Jamison had a rebound off FHSU goalkeeper Abbie Flax bounce right to her and she buried it in the back of the net for her 14th goal of the season. It cut the Tiger lead in half, just 15 seconds after Beaulieu’s goal. SBU had a few more opportunities in the final four minutes but were unable to find the equalizer and buzzer sounded with the Tigers on top 2-1.

Flax recorded her fifth win of the season for FHSU in between the pipes, saving seven shots.

Wind played a huge factor in the match, steady out of the south at about 20-30 mph throughout the match. SBU was downwind the first half and recorded 12 shots to Fort Hays State’s three, but the Tigers kept the Bearcats off the board. In the second half, FHSU had 13 shots to SBU’s three.

Fort Hays State takes on Central Missouri at 4 pm on Friday. The Jennies are ranked No. 9 in the latest national poll. FHSU defeated Central Missouri earlier this year in Hays, 2-1, when UCM was ranked No. 1 in the nation.
