Royals rally once again to win first World Series title in 30 years

2015 World Series LogoNEW YORK (AP) – The resilient and relentless Kansas City Royals are World Series champions for the first time in 30 years, thanks to Christian Colon. His pinch-hit RBI tiebreaking single keyed a five-run rally in the top of the 12th inning in the Royals come-from-behind 7-2 victory over the New York Mets to win the World Series in five games.

World Series MVP Salvador Perez opened the 12th inning rally with an opposite field single. Pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Colon, making his first plate appearance in the playoffs, delivered a run-scoring single off Mets reliever Addison Reed. Alcides Escobar scored Colon on a double. The Royals then added three more for insurance.

The lightly used Colon is the first player in World Series history to drive in the winning run in a clinching victory in his first plate appearance.

The Royals won all four World Series games coming from behind. After taking the first two at home, the Royals won two of three in New York. In a year of improbable comebacks, they won eight postseason games coming from behind, this was one of the most unlikely of all.

Kansas City trailed 2-0 after Mets right-hander Matt Harvey hurled eight powerful innings, striking out nine. After he gave up a run in the ninth, Harvey gave way to Jeurys Familia. The Mets closer allowed the tying run to score on a gutsy baserunning move by Eric Hosmer, who scored from third on a ground out. It was Familia’s third blown save of the series.

That opened the door for the Royals’ extra inning heroics — and their second World Series title in history. The Royals avenged their seven-game loss to San Francisco in last year’s Series.

Manning, Broncos throttle Rodgers, Packers

Broncos logoDENVER (AP) – In only the fourth meeting of teams 6-0 or better, Peyton Manning tied Brett Favre’s NFL record with his 186th regular-season win and Denver’s defense rattled Aaron Rodgers into one of the worst games of his career in the Broncos’ 29-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

Wearing the blue jerseys they did in beating the Packers for their first Super Bowl win in 1997, the Broncos piled it on in the fourth quarter, when DeMarcus Ware sacked Rodgers and the ball ended up in the end zone for a safety.

The Broncos improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1998, when they won the Super Bowl after finishing 14-2.

Rodgers of 14 of 22 for just 77 yards for the Packers (6-1) – the lowest of his career in a game where he wasn’t knocked out by injury.

FHSU Athletics

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State knew its opportunity for hosting an MIAA Tournament match heading into Sunday at Washburn. The Tigers seized their opportunity with a 1-0 win over the Ichabods and leaped Southwest Baptist in the conference standings for fourth place alone.

Cenayda Guzman provided the game winner in the 58th minute as Kelsey Steffens found her in the box in traffic. The goal lifted the Tigers to a victory by the score of 1-0 for the third consecutive match.

Abbie Flax recorded three saves in her team-leading fourth shutout win of the season. She moved to 4-1-1 on the season.

The win pushed FHSU to 7-4 in the conference standings and a total of 21 points. Southwest Baptist tied its final match of the season, dropping the Bearcats behind the Tigers in the standings. FHSU men’s soccer allows two penalty kicks in final six minutes; fall to NSU

FHSU Athletics

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Fort Hays State led for nearly 60 minutes before a bizarre finish on the road at Northeastern State on Sunday (Nov. 1). The Tigers fell 3-2 as NSU buried two penalty kicks in the final six minutes of the game to escape the 20th-ranked Tigers on its home field.

Anthony Hernandez put the Tigers in front 1-0 in the 11th minute after a nice pass off the heel of Mauricio Castorino. FHSU held that advantage until the 70th minute when NSU’s Trevor Reed scored a header off a free kick.

The Tigers looked as if they would escape with a win when Maurizio Costa buried a penalty kick at 84:01, but then all sorts of chaos ensued.

Only 20 seconds later, the Tigers were whistled for a violation in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Jonathan Guzman who squared the match again.

Then at 87:13, Luis Torres was issued a red card for a play in the box and Guzman scored another penalty kick to put the RiverHawks in front with less than two minutes to play.

Fort Hays State put two shots on net in the final two minutes, but both were saved. Jackson Biles picked up the win in goal for NSU with seven saves. Michael Yantz took the loss for FHSU with four saves.

Even with the loss, Fort Hays State still controls its own destiny in conference play. The Tigers will need to win their final two home games this coming week against Upper Iowa and Lindenwood to win an MIAA Championship. Anything else and they come up short of claiming their first conference crown.

KC Chiefs LogoLONDON (AP) — Alex Smith threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 78 yards and a touchdown to lead the Kansas City Chiefs over the Detroit Lions 45-10 Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Smith scrambled his way through the Detroit defense for some big plays, including a career-high 49-yard run in the second quarter that set up his 12-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs (3-5) were playing at Wembley for the first time, while the Lions (1-7) played in London for the second straight season.

De’Anthony Thomas, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware also rushed for touchdowns for the Chiefs. Thomas ended up with 100 total yards, while West ran for 97. Travis Kelce and Jeremy Maclin caught TD passes in the second half.

NEW YORK (AP) — Second baseman Daniel Murphy was a huge reason for the New York Mets’ ability to beat the Dodgers and Cubs en route to the National League pennant. On Saturday, it was Murphy’s error that helped the resilient Kansas City Royals put together a three-run eighth in a 5-3 triumph over the Mets at Citi Field. The rally gives the Royals a three-games-to-one lead in the World Series.

Rookie Michael Conforto’s second solo homer of the night put New York ahead 3-1 in the fifth, but the Royals scored once the following inning and rallied against Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia in the eighth. Ben Zobrist and Lorenzo Cain worked out one-out walks against Clippard before Familiar got Eric Hosmer to hit a grounder that skipped underneath Murphy’s glove for a game-tying error. Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez followed with RBI singles to make it 5-3.

Perez had three of the Royals’ nine hits, while Zobrist scored twice.

The Mets had a chance to win it in the ninth after Murphy and Yoenis Cespedes hit one-out singles off Royals closer Wade Davis. Cespedes then elected to take off for second on Lucas Duda’s soft liner to Moustakas at third. Moustakas grabbed the liner near his shoetops and had no trouble doubling off Cespedes at first for the final putout.

It was Familia’s second blown save of the series. The last pitcher to blow two saves in a single World Series was Ryan Madson, who worked a perfect seventh on Saturday to pick up the victory.

The Royals can claim their second World Series title, and first in 30 years, as early as Sunday night in New York. Kansas City will send Edinson Volquez to the hill against Matt Harvey in a rematch of Game 1 starters.

BOLIVAR, Mo. – After falling down 2-0 against Southwest Baptiston Saturday, Fort Hays State rallied for three straight sets and a 3-2 win over the Bearcats. The Tigers moved to 18-11 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA.

The Tigers dropped the first set 25-18 and the second 25-23 before rallying back. The Tigers stayed alive by taking a closely played third set 25-23. Crystal Whitten provided the set-winning kill.

The Tigers trailed by five early in the fourth set but rallied to tie the set at 14-14. FHSU pushed in front, but SBU kept it close and tied it once again at 22-22. After trading points, Mallory Flagor put down a kill and Ari Johnson delivered a service ace to force the fifth and decisive set with another 25-23 set win.

The Tigers looked to be running away with the fifth set up 7-2, but at 10-6, SBU went on a four-point run to tie it 10-10. The Tigers fought the rally off with a three-point run of their own, going up 13-10. Whitten would go on to provide the match-winning kill for a 15-12 final set win.

Wright lifts Mets to win over Royals

NEW YORK (AP) — Their nicknames are Thor, Captain America and the Grandyman, and they’ve helped the New York Mets pull within two games to one in the World Series.

Noah Syndergaard worked six tough innings and David Wright and Curtis Granderson hit two-run homers as the Mets trounced the Kansas City Royals 9-3 in New York. Granderson’s blast put the Mets ahead to stay in the third inning before Syndergaard and the Mets’ bullpen shut down the Royals the rest of the way.

Syndergaard struggled over the first two innings, surrendering three runs and six hits. But he later retired 12 straight batters at one point and capped his performance by working out of a bases-loaded jam to end the sixth. The rookie also had six strikeouts after teammates Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom managed just four Ks in 11 innings of the series.

Wright became the second Met to collect four RBIs in a World Series game, and the first since Rusty Staub in Game 4 of the 1973 Fall Classic. In addition to his first home run of this postseason, the Mets’ third baseman and team captain added a two-run single while the Mets scored four times in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Granderson was 2-for-5 with three runs scored to help the Mets bounce back from two straight losses in Kansas City.

The Royals managed just one hit off Syndergaard and the Mets’ bullpen after the second inning. Addison Reed, Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia each worked a perfect inning of relief to close out the win.

Royals starter and loser Yordano Ventura was reached for five runs and seven hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

Royals outfielder Raul Mondesi Jr. became the first player ever to make his major league debut in the World Series. Mondesi entered as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning and struck out on four pitches.

The teams get back at it Saturday night in New York. Former Met Chris Young will start for the Royals against Steven Matz, who will be making just his ninth major league start. Young tossed three innings of no-hit relief in picking up the victory in Game 1 of the series.

FHSU women’s soccer weathers cold, rainy night to beat UNK

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State remained alive for a possible first-round home match in the MIAA Tournament as it downed Nebraska-Kearney 1-0 on a cold, rainy night at FHSU Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Tigers moved to 9-7-1 overall and 6-4 in the MIAA. UNK dropped to 4-9-4 overall and 3-5-2 in the MIAA.

The Lopers committed a foul in the box in the 22nd minute and Gabrielle Makatura buried a penalty kick, which proved to be all the scoring FHSU needed in the team’s seventh shutout of the season.

With a wet field and slick ball, both teams were limited in good shot opportunities. FHSU outshot UNK 11-6 in the match.

Making her first appearance in goal for the Tigers, senior Kimi Kaniaupio recorded the shutout win. She saved five shots in the winning effort. Ali Hirschman took the loss for UNK in goal with three saves.

Eight Tiger seniors were honored at halftime of the match, playing in their final regular season home match. Makatura and Kaniaupio were part of the eight, which also included Dani Harris, Kylee Loneker, Mallory Diedrich, Cenayda Guzman, Ember Albertson and Jordon Hester. Loneker, Diederich, and Hester, who are all injured, came out of the match after a minute of action in a nice jesture for three seniors that have made big contributions to the program.

The Tigers close out the regular season on Sunday at Washburn University in the final conference match of the season. The Tigers are tied for fourth in the MIAA standings at 6-4 with Southwest Baptist. SBU has the tiebreak on FHSU for hosting in the first round of the conference tournament if they remain tied after Sunday.

Hays High ends season with home loss to McPherson

By Dustin Armbruster

Hays and McPherson were facing the same fate at the end of Friday’s match-up at Lewis Field Stadium.  Neither team would be advancing to the playoffs.

Following a Hays punt on three plays to open the game, McPherson drove 53 yards on 12 plays to score the games first touchdown.  The drive consumed 5:40.  McPherson had a miscue on the snap and the point after failed leaving the score 6-0.  After another three plays and punt by Hays, McPherson drove 60 yards on 17 plays scoring on third and goal from the 19 yard line.  The second scoring drive took 8:14.  McPherson scored on a two point conversion attempt to lead 14-0 with 7:02 left in the second quarter.

Hays finally caught a spark on offense during their ensuing drive using a double pass, hook and ladder, and a 28 yard touchdown pass on fourth down from Hunter Brown to Jared Haynes to get with-in a touchdown at 14-7.  Maddux Winter intercepted a Bullpup pass on the following possession and the Indians again scored on fourth down this time Brown to Keith Dryden for 24 yards and a 14-14 tie at half time.

Highlights

McPherson opened the second half with a long drive that ended with a 21 yard field goal to take a 17-14 lead.  The Hays offense couldn’t gain any traction for the first half of the third quarter, but their defense held McPherson in check.  Brayden Delzeit blocked a punt to set up the Indians at the eight yard line late in the third quarter.  Hays would get their first lead of the game on a Dryden five yard touchdown run at 21-17.  Following a Bullpup touchdown the Indians would drive for a Logan Clark 40 yard field goal to tie the game at 24 with 2:56 remaining.  McPherson would find a way to drive down the field to score a touchdown pass with :27 left and take a 31-24 victory.

Coach Randall Rath

Hays finishes the season at 2-7.  McPherson is done at 5-4.
