Little hit, big win; Royals beat Jays for 2-0 lead in ALCS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ben Zobrist’s easy fly that somehow fell in for a hit began a five-run rally against David Price, and the Kansas City Royals rolled to a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday for a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series.

Wade Davis survived a shaky ninth for Kansas City after Luke Hochevar and Danny Duffy were solid in relief of Yordano Ventura. Kelvin Herrera breezed through the eighth.

Davis gave up a leadoff single and walked pinch-hitter Cliff Pennington, but bounced back to strike out leadoff man Ben Revere and MVP candidate Josh Donaldson. Jose Bautista then flied out to right to give Davis his third postseason save and the Royals another postseason comeback win.

 

Late scoring drive lifts Tigers to upset over No. 13 Emporia State

HAYS, Kan. – Evan Jennings’ 20-yard touchdown reception with 0:52 seconds to play gave Fort Hays State the lead for good, lifting the Tigers to a 27-24 upset win over No. 13 Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. The catch capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive scoring drive which came after Emporia State’s Mitchell Foote returned a punt 66-yards for a touchdown giving the Hornets a 24-20 lead with 2:42 to play.

Garrett Holle hauled in a 27-yard pass and Isaiah Maxi a 20-yard one-handed grab on the go-ahead drive which helped the Tigers overcome 10-0 first quarter deficit. FHSU improves to 5-2 with the win while the Hornets fall to 6-1.

Game Highlights

 

Raheeme Dumas, John Wilson and Brock Long all had interceptions in the game. Long’s came with 0:01 to play to seal the win.

The Tigers had a season-high 493 yards offense, 375 of them on the ground. Shaquille Cooper led the way with 216 yards including an 89-yard TD run to put FHSU up 20-17 with 7:51 to play.

Treveon Albert rushed for 151 yards and a score while completing 10-of-20 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Brock Long recorded 22 tackles, three off the school’s Division II single-game record.

FHSU volleyball picks up straight set win at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State took care of business against a struggling Pittsburg State team on Saturday evening. The Tigers defeated the Gorillas in straight sets 26-24, 25-13, 25-21, moving to 12-10 overall and 4-6 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State held off a late rally from Pittsburg State (1-19, 1-8 MIAA) in the first set to win by two. FHSU led by seven at 22-15, but PSU went on a 7-0 run to tie the set thanks in large part to five attacking errors by the Tigers. Crystal Whitten had the final two kills of the set against her former school and a PSU attacking error gave the Tigers the set.

FHSU built a big lead early in the second set and did not let go of it this time, cruising to a 12-point win to take a commanding lead in the match. FHSU led by as many as six in the third set, but held off another late charge by PSU. Up 22-21, Megan Anderson and Mallory Flafor had consecutive kills and PSU ended the match with an attacking error.

FHSU held PSU to a hitting percentage less than .100 in all three sets. After a sluggish first set, the Tigers hit .355 the second and .250 in the third. The Tigers finished at .212 overall in the match, while the Gorillas hit just .049.

Flagor led the Tigers with 11 kills, hitting .304 in the match. Rebekah Spainhour had nine kills and Whitten had eight. Hannah Wagy provided 37 assists and Whitten had a team-high 11 digs.

Maggie Highberger led PSU in kills with seven. Hayley Hansford had 14 assists and Ashlen Schwartz recorded 19 digs.

Fort Hays State heads to Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Wednesday night for a non-conference match before returning home for MIAA play on the weekend.

No. 19 Oklahoma shuts out Kansas State

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Baker Mayfield threw for five touchdowns and No. 19 Oklahoma bounced back from its Red River upset to beat Kansas State 55-0 on Saturday, the first time the Wildcats have been shut out since 1996.

Kansas State had delivered serious scares to Top 25 opponents each of the last two weeks but the Wildcats (3-3, 0-3 Big 12) were helpless against the Sooners (5-1, 2-1). Oklahoma set the tone early, taking only 1:04 to score on its opening drive on a 22-yard pass from Mayfield to Sterling Shepard.

The Sooners took a 35-0 lead into halftime and just kept rolling in the second half.

Going into Saturday’s game, Kansas State had scored in 234 straight games. The loss to Oklahoma marked the first time the Wildcats have been shut out at home since 1991.

Texas Tech holds off Kansas

Kansas Jayhawk LogoLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 359 yards and a score, De’Andre Washington rushed for 160 yards and a TD and Texas Tech held off a late-charging, winless Kansas team 30-20 on Saturday.

The Red Raiders (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) racked up 225 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. Texas Tech’s 30 points were the least amount the team has scored all season.

Five different Texas Tech offensive playmakers recorded over 50 yards receiving. Zach Austin led the Red Raiders with 80 yards receiving, Jakeem Grant had 76 yards, Devin Lauderdale had 50, Cameron Batson, 58, and Reginald Davis, 57 yards and a score.

Texas Tech continued its streak of perfection, as the Red Raiders are 9-0 inside Memorial Stadium, a record dating to 1966.

Kansas (0-6, 0-3) is riding a nine-game losing streak and is 0-6 for the first time since 1988.

Beloit uses big 3rd Quarter to put away TMP

Beloit outscored TMP 28-0 in the 3rd Quarter Friday night to blow open a close game with the visitors from Hays. The Trojans led 24-14 at halftime and used one offensive and three defensive touchdowns in the third to help blow out the Monarchs 60-21.

TMP scored three touchdowns on the night.  A 65-yard Chase Romme touchdown run on the first offensive play of the game for the Monarchs put TMP on the board.  Gavin Schumacher added a couple of scores for TMP as well. He was on the receiving end of a 36-yard touchdown strike from Romme with under a minute to play in the first half. He also hauled in a 42-yard touchdown pass from Luke Ruder in the 4th Quarter.

TMP drops to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in Class 3A, District 14 play.  The Monarchs will host Russell on Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium.

Volquez sharp as Royals beat Blue Jays in ALCS opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Edinson Volquez gave the Blue Jays another reason to rue him Friday night.

The Royals right-hander combined with three relievers on a three-hitter, Salvador Perez hit a soaring home run off Toronto starter Marco Estrada, and Kansas City rolled to a 5-0 victory in Game 1 of their American League Championship Series.

Volquez (1-1) ramped up his fastball to 97 mph to slice through a potent Blue Jays offense, never allowing a runner past second base over six innings. His only trouble occurred when he walked the first two batters in the sixth, but he wiggled out of it without any damage.

The Royals’ bullpen finished off the club’s eighth consecutive ALCS victory.

Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain drove in runs off Estrada (1-1), while Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales tacked on two more off LaTroy Hawkins to put the game away.

The Blue Jays’ three hits were their fewest ever in a postseason game.

Hays falls to Buhler in district opener

The Hays High Indians opened district play with the undefeated Buhler Crusaders on Friday Night.  Buhler had only given up 41 points in their first six games, which included three shut-out wins.  Buhler entered the night ranked #2 in class 4A-1.  It was the first time Hays had played an opponent that was not in Class 5A or 6A.

The Indians forced Buhler into a change of possession on downs to start the game.  Hays then had their punt blocked and recovered at the 1 yard line to set up the Crusaders to with their first score of the night one play later.  Hays blocked the extra point to keep the score at 6-0.  Hays responded on their next drive scoring on a 43 yard touchdown pass from Kohlton Meyers to Keith Dryden on 3rd a 21.  The score and Logan Clark extra point gave the Indians a 7-6 lead in the first quarter.

Highlights

 

Hays would hold that lead until midway through the second quarter.  At that point Buhler would score three touchdowns in less than five minutes to go up 25-7 at halftime.

The Indians opened the second half driving with the football but fumbled the ball that Buhler returned 40 yards for a touchdown.  Buhler would go on for the 46-14 win.  Dylan Schmidtberger scored his first career touchdowns for the Indians in the fourth quarter for their second score of the night.

Hays falls to 2-5 and 0-1 in district play.  Buhler is now 7-0 for the eighth time in school history.

Hays travels to 7-0 Abilene next week.  Abilene beat McPherson 26-17 on Friday moving to 1-0 in district play.

FHSU women’s soccer blanks Bearcats on the road

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team bounced back with a big MIAA win on Friday (Oct 16), a 3-0 decision against Northwest Missouri State after dropping their previous two conference matches. With the win the Tigers moved to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA, while NWMSU went to 2-7-3 overall and 1-5-1 in the MIAA.

Ember Albertson got the offense going for the Tigers when she scored her second goal of the season at the 13:54 mark. Albertson received a pass from Kelsey Steffens, beat a defender, and then buried the ball past the keeper to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.

Cassi Moosburger added her third goal of the season when she received ball from Albertson that the diving Bearcat keeper could not get to, leaving the net wide open to push the FHSU lead to 2-0 at 52:46.

Salvana Romero joined the offensive party when she scored her first goal of the season and put the game out of reach in the 72nd minute. She was able to head the ball beyond the keeper on a good group effort with passes from Veronica Kurtz and Hannah Jurgens.

Abby Flax was the winning goalkeeper for the Tigers, recording her second win of the season by saving four shots. Flax is 2-1 overall.

Next up for the Tigers is Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo., on Sunday (Oct. 18) at 12 pm.

FHSU volleyball swept at No. 11 UCO

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State fell to No. 11 ranked Central Oklahoma on Friday evening (Oct. 16) by a score of 3-0. FHSU held a six-point lead in the first set at 17-11, but gave away a golden opportunity and eventually fell 25-23. The Bronchos won the final two sets by the score of 25-18.

Central Oklahoma’s offense was too much throughout the match, hitting .431 as a team in the match. The Bronchos (20-1 overall, 8-0 MIAA) hit .421 in the first set, .680 in the second, and .282 in the third. UCO put down 52 kills and committed only eight errors. Taylor Bevis led UCO with 12 kills, while Barbara Jackson and Allison Barr each had 11 and Jordan Spence had 10.

The Tigers (11-10 overall, 3-6 MIAA) hit. 250 and .300 in the first two sets, but struggled mightily in the third at -.023. FHSU put down 15 kills in the opening set and 13 in the second, but just eight in the third. Mallory Flagor led the Tigers with 11 kills, while Crystal Whitten added 10. Whitten had a double-double with a team-high 15 digs. Hannah Wagy had 32 assists.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Pittsburg State. Match time is set for 6 pm.

Hobson’s third NAIA championship team going into Hastings College Athletic Hall of Fame

Fort Hays State head coach Tony Hobson will be honored by Hastings College once again on Saturday. Hobson’s 2005-06 NAIA National Championship team will be inducted into the Hastings Athletic Hall of Fame, making it the fifth time Hobson will be earn a Hall of Fame honor at Hastings College.

Hobson is already a member of the Hastings Athletic Hall of Fame as a player and a coach. His 2001-02 and 2002-03 national championship teams have been inducted as well, and he received the Outstanding Alumni Coach Award. All four of the these honors were bestowed upon Hobson in 2011. His 2005-06 team will mark the fifth time he enters the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments at Hastings College.

Hobson is one of the most successful collegiate women’s basketball coaches in the nation, entering his 24th year overall with a career record of 545-177 (.755). He ranks in the top 10 in win percentage among active coaches in NCAA Division II with a four-year college win percentage of .756 (343-111). In seven years at Fort Hays State, Hobson has a record of 132-71, including a 30-4 mark last year – the program’s best season ever in its NCAA Division II history.
