Royals rally with 5-run in 8th inning to beat Astros; even ALDS 2-2

KC Royals Logo 6HOUSTON (AP) — Astros shortstop Carlos Correa couldn’t handle a deflected grounder that might have been a double-play ball, helping the Kansas City Royals rally for five runs in the eighth inning to beat Houston 9-6 Monday and force their playoff series to a decisive Game 5.

Correa homered twice, doubled, singled and drove in four runs in Game 4 of the AL Division Series. Houston took a 6-2 lead into the eighth, but a tough error charged to the 21-year-old rookie keyed the Royals’ comeback to even the matchup at two games apiece.

Game 5 will be back in Kansas City on Wednesday night.

Late in the game, a tweet from the account of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott congratulated the Astros on advancing to the AL Championship Series.

But the defending AL champion Royals had other ideas.

Chiefs RB Charles done for season with knee injury

By DAVE SKRETTA

ChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

The star running back hurt his knee in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Chicago. An MRI on Monday confirmed the tear.

Earlier Monday, coach Andy Reid said “the worst case is the ACL is torn. That’s probably the direction it’s heading.”

Charles was making a cut deep in Bears territory on Sunday when his right knee buckled at a gruesome angle. The four-time Pro Bowl selection needed help from a trainer and linebacker Justin Houston to get off the field, never once putting any weight on the leg.

Charles tore the ACL in his other knee four years ago, missing most of the season.

Astros take 2-1 series lead over Royals with win

KC Royals Logo 6HOUSTON (AP) — Dallas Keuchel remained perfect at home with seven gutsy innings and Chris Carter homered Sunday, leading the Houston Astros to a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals to take a 2-1 lead in the American League Division Series.

The Astros could wrap up the best-of-five series with a win over the defending AL champions in Game 4 on Monday.

Keuchel (2-0) worked out of jam after jam, allowing five hits and one run with seven strikeouts after going 15-0 at home this season, a modern major league record.

Luke Gregerson gave up a leadoff homer in the ninth to Alex Gordon before finishing off the Astros first playoff game in Houston in 10 years with a four-out save. It was save of more than three outs in three years.

Jason Castro drove in two runs with a single in the fifth that made it 2-1. Carlos Gomez, who has a rib muscle strain, started for the first time in the series and had an RBI single in the sixth.

Harris’ INT return leads Broncos to win over Raiders

Broncos logoOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Chris Harris Jr. returned a fourth-quarter interception 74 yards for a touchdown and the Denver Broncos overcame a shaky day from Peyton Manning to beat the Oakland Raiders 16-10 on Sunday.

Manning was intercepted twice by 1998 draft classmate Charles Woodson and failed to lead the Broncos (5-0) to an offensive touchdown for the second time in five games this season. But Denver’s defense made sure it didn’t matter, getting a third defensive touchdown of the season to remain undefeated.

Derek Carr threw for 249 yards and one touchdown for the Raiders (2-3) but was done in by the interception midway through the fourth quarter with Oakland in position for a possible go-ahead field goal.

Cutler rallies Bears past Chiefs; Charles suffers severe knee injury

KC Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jay Cutler led Chicago to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including an alert toss to running back Matt Forte with 18 seconds left, giving the Bears a stunning 18-17 victory over Kansas City.

The 2-3 Bears trailed 17-3 early in the third quarter when Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles went down with a potentially serious knee injury. The preliminary diagnosis was a torn ACL and Charles will have an MRI exam Monday.

Cutler threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, the first a 22-yard strike to Marquess Wilson with 3:05 left in the game. After the Bears forced a quick three-and-out, Cutler drove them inside the 10-yard line, where he spotted Forte in the end zone.

The 1-4 Chiefs tried a 66-yard field goal that came up short as time expired.

One goal enough for UCO to down FHSU women’s soccer

FHSU Athletics

EDMOND, Okla. – The conference road swing in Oklahoma over the weekend was not kind to FHSU as it fell 1-0 at Central Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers dropped their second straight conference match and moved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. UCO improved to 7-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the MIAA.

A goal by Katie Killion in the 76th minute was all Central Oklahoma needed to pick up the win. UCO outshot the Tigers 12-5 in the match. Fort Hays State was only able to put three shots on net, all saved by Lexie Bates who moved to 2-1 on the season.

Fort Hays State’s Kristen Thompson produced five saves, but took the loss moving to 5-5 on the season. All five shots for FHSU were distributed among five different players.

The Tigers hit the road again next weekend for conference matches at Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western. FHSU is currently in a tie for sixth place in the MIAA standings with Emporia State.

Boykin helps No. 2 TCU rally past Kansas State

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Trevone Boykin threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns, the second a 55-yard strike to Josh Doctson with 1:10 left in the game, and second-ranked TCU rallied from a big halftime deficit to beat Kansas State 52-45 on Saturday night.

Boykin also ran for 124 yards and two scores for the Horned Frogs (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), who trailed 35-17 at the break. Aaron Green added 124 yards and two touchdowns rushing, while Doctson caught eight passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

None was bigger than his catch-and-run just 30 seconds after Jack Cantele had connected on a 37-yard field goal for Kansas State (3-2, 0-2) to knot the game 45-all.

The Wildcats had won 49 straight games when leading at halftime before last week’s loss at Oklahoma State. Now, coach Bill Snyder’s crew has lost two in a row.

Rally comes up short for the Tigers; lose at Missouri Western

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Fort Hays State nearly erased a 12-point second half deficit, only to come up short 26-21 at Missouri Western Saturday afternoon. After hauling in a 41-yard catch and run to the Griffon seven yard line, Evan Jennings was unable to haul in a pass in the back of the endzone on the game’s final play.

Treveon Albert’s one-yard run with 11:36 to play pulled the Tigers within five. Albert completed 21 of 44 passes for 290 yards and touchdown while rushing for 76 and a score. Shaquille Cooper rushed for 114 yards and a score. He also had five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Flory hauled in seven catches for 118 yards but left with what appeared to be a severe knee injury.

Game Highlights

The Tigers had three chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter, coming up empty each time. Albert threw an interception following an FHSU fumble recovery and they went three-and-out after forcing a Griffon punt prior to their last possession.

Shaquille Cooper’s 67-yard touchdown run in the Tigers first possession gave them an early 7-3 lead. It was a lead they would keep until the Griffons scored 16 unanswered over the final six and-a-half minutes of the second quarter in building a 19-7 halftime lead.

The Tigers outgained the Griffons 479 yards to 441.

Both teams are now 4-2.

No. 3 Baylor romps to win over Kansas to stay unbeaten

Kansas Jayhawk LogoLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Seth Russell tossed three touchdown passes, Shock Linwood ran for 135 yards and a score, and third-ranked Baylor romped to a 66-7 victory over woebegone Kansas on Saturday.

Russell threw for 246 yards, all in the first half. Two of the TD strikes went to Corey Coleman, pushing his nation-leading total to 13, and the other to 6-foot-7, 410-pound tight end LaQuan McGowan, helping the Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) to a 52-7 halftime lead.

It was the seventh straight Big 12 win for the Bears, and one that was hardly unexpected: They began the game as 46-point favorites, a record for a visiting team in Big 12 play.

Turns out the odds-makers were being kind.

Freshman Ryan Willis threw for 158 yards and a score in his first start for Kansas (0-5, 0-2), but he also tossed a pick and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
