Oakley scored 21 first quarter points and didn’t look back from there as they went on the road to beat the TMP Monarchs 42-7 on Friday night. Oakley used a short field in the for their first three scores, scoring on drives of 54, 53 and 30 yards. Kendrick Smith, Colter Stoll and Macoy Rains all scored.
TMP’s defense would tighten up in the second quarter as the Monarchs held the Plainsmen out of the endzone. The TMP offense was able to get the wheels turning as Chase Romme capped off a four play, 42 yard drive with a 35 yard touchdown run on fourth down and two. That would be all of the scoring TMP could muster.
The Monarchs had the ball to start the third quarter but had to punt and Oakley scored on the ensuing drive. The final score for the Plainsmen came late on a two yard run from Tyler Park. TMP turned the ball over five times tonight which brings their turnover total from the last three games to 16.
Oakley improves to 3-3 on the season and will travel to Ellis next week. TMP drops to 1-5 and will be on the road in Beloit next week when they start district play.
The Hays High Indians traveled to Dodge City on Friday night to take on the fourth most potent offense in all of 11-man football. The Red Demons entered the evening averaging 52 points and 502 yards per contest. Dodge City was held to under their average in both points and yards but pulled out the win 37-3 over Hays.
It took all of three offensive plays for Dodge City to show their offensive fireworks. Hays opened the game with two punts and an interception. Dodge City responded with three pass plays all from Caden Walters to Eric Reid for 184 yards and three scores. The Red Demons led 21-0 with 4:24 left to go in the first quarter. Dodge City tacked on a Tyler Trent touchdown run in the first quarter and second quarter to lead 35-0 at half time.
Highlights
The Hays defense came to play in the second half. The Indians forced three fumbles, picked off a pass, and forced a change of possession on downs holding Dodge City out of the end zone in the second half. The Indian’s only scoring drive came following a Dodge City fumble to open the third quarter. Logan Clark kicked a 32 yard field goal to cap a 12 play-4:40 drive.
The lone points for Dodge City in the second half came when Hays fumbled in their own end zone and covered it up for a Red Demon safety.
Coach Randall Rath
Hays falls to 2-4 on the year and finishes WAC play at 1-3. Dodge City improves to 4-2 and is 3-0 in the conference. Dodge City will play Garden City for the outright league title in week 9.
Hays is at home to open district play next week against undefeated Buhler.
HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State battled to a five-set win against Emporia State on Friday evening,, moving to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA. The win pulled FHSU even with Emporia State (8-8, 3-4 MIAA) in the conference standings and snapped a six-match losing streak to the Hornets. FHSU won by scores of 25-10, 20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11.
Coach Kurt Kohler
Fort Hays State took advantage of a flat Emporia State effort, jumping to a 7-0 lead in the first set before ESU finally got on the board. The Tigers received little resistance from the Hornets throughout the set as they ran away with the set by 15. FHSU hit .333 in the opening set and held ESU to a -.229 hitting percentage.
The Hornets showed signs of life early in the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before FHSU crawled back to tie the set 11-11. However, too many unforced errors would cost the Tigers in the set as they committed five service errors and five attack errors that were not blocked, giving away 10 points. It proved too much with just a .190 attack percentage in the set as the Hornets won 25-20 to tie the match.
FHSU rebounded with another convincing win in the third set, 25-16, outhitting ESU .267 to .077. However, another sluggish start in the fourth set was too much to overcome in a 25-23 loss. The Tigers rallied midway through the set and eventually led 20-19 before giving up three of the final four points of the set following a 22-22 tie. By the end of the fourth set, the Tigers were outhitting the Hornets .231 to .098 but found themselves in a 2-2 tie.
The fifth set was tight throughout as the teams battled to an 11-11 tie. Fort Hays State found the burst it needed at the right time, reeling off four straight points to win the match. A Sydney Dixon kill and Kailey Klibbe service ace fueled the run, coupled with two hitting errors by the Hornets.
Crystal Whitten had a tremendous double-double effort of 23 kills and 16 digs. She hit .409 in the match. Mallory Flagorhad a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Wagy had 47 assists, and Klibbe led in digs with 20. Wagy also had a double-double, adding 18 digs to her assist total. Megan Anderson provided nine blocks (1 solo, 8 assisted).
FHSU outhit ESU .238 to .106 in the match. Both teams produced 12 points off blocks, but FHSU led in kills 60-53 and in digs 83-78.
Josie Williams led ESU with 15 kills, while Shayla Cotman added 11. Sydney Hartman had 25 assists and Kelly Holden had 26 digs.
The Tigers take on No. 12 Washburn on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 2 pm in Hays. FHSU handed Washburn its first loss of the season two weeks ago. The Ichabods are coming off a 3-0 road loss to No. 16 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday evening. The Ichabods are now 17-2 overall, 5-2 MIAA.
Fort Hays State Athletics will enshrine several new members into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 31, 2015. Jeff Bieker – Baseball
Bieker played three years at Fort Hays State from 2003-2005 and did not play his senior year after getting drafted by the Oakland A’s in the summer of 2005. He is arguably the best hitter to ever play at FHSU as he tops the all-time lists in batting average (.421), home runs (58), and slugging percentage (.879). He is second all-time in RBI (191) and total bases (430) and would have easily passed those marks as a senior, had he opted to stay at FHSU. He was a three-time All-RMAC selection in the outfield, the 2003 RMAC Freshman of the Year, 2005 RMAC Player of the Year, 2005 West Region Player of the Year, 2005 All-America First Team selection by the NCBWA and a All-America selection by the ABCA in both 2004 and 2005. He hit a single-season school record 23 home runs in both 2004 and 2005, only one of two players with 20 or more homers in a season at FHSU. He led all NCAA divisions in home runs per game (.53) and slugging percentage (1.013) as a sophomore in 2004. He is the only player to ever slug over 1.000 in a season at FHSU. He led NCAA Division II in home runs as a junior in 2005. His .436 batting average in 2004 is also a single-season record at FHSU. He played for two years in the Oakland A’s minor league system.
Jayme Eichner – Volleyball
Jayme Eichner is arguably the best setter and one of the best all-around players in FHSU Volleyball history, competing from 2001 to 2004. She owns the school record for assists with 5,878, over 3,000 more than the next closest player in FHSU history, NAIA or NCAA era. She averaged 12.61 assists per set for her career, helping the Tigers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004. She was the catalyst for Fort Hays State’s best team in NCAA history in 2004, helping the Tigers to a record of 31-5 overall and a top-10 ranking in the nation. She helped lead FHSU to the regional final as a senior, falling just a win short of the Elite Eight. In 2004, she recorded an FHSU single-season record of 1,644 assists and she appears in the school’s top 10 list for all four of her seasons, recording 1,456 in 2002 (3rd), 1,454 in 2003 (4th), and 1,324 in 2001 (7th). She also owns the top three single-season assists per set marks in school history with 13.37 per set in 2004, 13.22 per set in 2003, and 12.34 per set in 2002. Her 11.51 mark in 2001 ranks seventh. She owns the top four single-game assist performances during the rally scoring era at FHSU, the best being 74 against Rockhurst in a 5-set match in 2003. She had three matches with 70 or more assists in her career. Along with being the table-setter for a potent offensive attack, she also thrived defensively by ranking fourth in career digs at FHSU during the Division II era with 1,393, averaging 2.99 per set. She also owns the school record for career service aces in the Division II era at FHSU with 153 and the single-season rally scoring era record with 44. Eichner was a four-time All-RMAC selection, including first-team honors as a senior. She was also an all-region first team selection as a senior.
Daryl Henning – Wrestling
Henning was a two-time All-American for the Tigers in wrestling. He was the 1981 National Champion at 158 pounds in his senior year, helping the team to a sixth-place finish as a team at nationals. He finished fourth nationally in 1979 as a sophomore, helping the team to a seventh-place finish that year. Henning was the second-ever national champion for FHSU in wrestling, ending an 11-year drought without a champion after Leland Tresner was the first national champion at FHSU in 1969.
Jim Montgomery – Track & Field
Jim Montgomery was one of the first NAIA individual national champions in FHSU outdoor track and field history and a two-time All-American. He, along with teammate Alan Feist, who is already in the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame, both won individual outdoor national championships in 1953. Montgomery was a national champion in the pole vault with a mark of 13-feet, 3-inches as a sophomore in 1953. He backed that up with another All-American effort in the pole vault in 1954 as a junior, finishing second with a better effort of 13-feet, 6.875-inches. He qualified for the national meet once again in 1955, but was unable to attend.
Vicki Thom Smith – Gymnastics
Vicki Thom Smith was a three-time All-American performer in women’s gymnastics. As a freshman in 1982, she placed second nationally in the floor exercise and uneven bars to earn two All-America honors. She, along with fellow All-American Shae Donham helped the team to a fourth-place finish at nationals in 1985. Smith finished fifth in the floor exercise to earn All-American honors that year. She was also a member of the team that finished fifth at nationals in 1984, placing seventh in the balance beam and eighth in floor exercise.
Ed & Donna Stehno – Contributors
Ed and Donna Stehno are members of Fort Hays State Athletics’ Difference Makers and in 2013, the couple pledged a $1 million gift to the FHSU Foundation. The bulk of their donation is going to athletic scholarships. They served as national co-chairs of the Cornerstone Campaign, which was the largest capital campaign in the history of the university. The goal of the campaign was to raise $60 million, but when the campaign ended, nearly $69 million had been raised.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals at their own game Thursday night, relying on sharp pitching from Collin McHugh and stingy defense behind him for a 5-2 victory in the opener of their AL Division Series.
McHugh (1-0) allowed four hits, including a pair of solo homers by Kendrys Morales, while pitching around a 49-minute rain delay. The right-hander lasted six innings before turning the game over to his bullpen, which scattered just three runners over the final three frames.
Tony Sipp, Will Harris and Oliver Perez got the game to Luke Gregerson, part of Oakland’s wild-card collapse in Kansas City last year. He handled the ninth to earn the save.
George Springer and Colby Rasmus went deep for the homer-happy Astros, but they also scored via the same sort of small ball the Royals used in reaching the World Series last season.
FAYETTE, Iowa – Falling down 2-0 by halftime, Fort Hays State assembled a furious second half rally with three goals to knock off 14th-ranked Upper Iowa 3-2 in a key MIAA match on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 8-3 overall, 2-1 in the MIAA, while the Peacocks dropped to 7-2-1 overall, 2-2 in the MIAA.
Upper Iowa built a 2-0 lead in the match as Ryan Pinkerton scored in the 20th minute and Joaquin Alonso in the 42nd minute, but the Tigers would fight back quickly in the second half.
FHSU drew a penalty kick in the 47th minute and Maurizio Costacapitalized on the opportunity, burying the shot just under the crossbar to make it 2-1. Later in the 73rd minute, the Tigers had a great counter attack as Damion Cooper found Paul Luna on a run in the middle of the field. Luna got to the ball just before the charging goalkeeper, chipped the ball up over the keeper, and tapped the ball in the net to equalize the match 2-2.
Just over seven minutes later in the 80th minute, David Lucio ripped a shot from the left side just outside of the box and it bent past the keeper near post to vault the Tigers into the lead, 3-2. Upper Iowa was only able to get two shots off the rest of the way.
Michael Yantz moved to 8-3 overall at goalkeeper with five saves. Ludin Gonzales went to 0-1 on the season with the loss, making one save in his first start of the season. The match was physical, mainly in the second half as a total of nine yellow cards were issued in the match (five to Upper Iowa, four to FHSU). The Peacocks doubled up the Tigers in shots, 14-7, but the Tigers were more efficient with their opportunities.
Fort Hays State meets Lindenwood on Saturday at 1 pm in St. Charles in a battle of first-place teams in the MIAA.
