Hays Picks Up A Victory In Wichita

By Dustin Armbruster

Friday night the Hays High Indians took to the road looking for the same result their only other road trip of the year had provided, a win.  The Indians were in Wichita to take on the 4-0 Wichita South Titans.  The Titans had already scored more points in four games than they had total in two of the previous three full seasons.  With four wins in four games, South had already tied their win total of the previous three seasons combined.

The teams played to a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter.  Hays struck first on a seven yard touchdown pass from Maddux Winter to Shane Berens.  The drive was set up by a Kohlton Meyers interception.  The touchdown gave Hays a 7-0 lead with 8:09 left in the 2nd quarter.  Hays would score on their next possession.  Keith Dryden ripped off a 73 yard run to set up a one yard score by Kohlton Meyers to take a 13-0 lead after the extra point was blocked.  Wichita South drove inside of the five at the end of the first half, but a intentional grounding penalty ran off the final three seconds of the half.  Hays led at half 13-0.

Highlights:

Neither team would score in the third quarter.  The big play of the quarter came when Maddux Winter intercepted a pass in the end zone stop another South drive from inside 5.

Hays would force a fifth Titan turnover of the game and turn it into a 22 yard field goal from Logan Clark to take a 16-0 lead with 7:40 remaining in the game.

South would have one more chance to score at the end of the game, but was turned away from inside the five again.

Coach Randall Rath:

Hays improves to 2-3 on the year.  Wichita South drops to 4-1.

Hays is on the road to Dodge City next week.

Cimarron downs TMP

TMP turned the ball over five times in the first half with four fumbles and one interception and lost 40-20 Friday night at Lewis Field.  Despite all of the turnovers the Monarchs were able keep the game within striking distance.  They used a Gavin Schumacher 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Chase Romme connected with Tucker Rhoades on an 11 yard touchdown pass late in the first half.  That brought TMP within 20-13 at the half.

Romme struck again at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter when he intercepted a Nick Aust pass and returned it 24 yards for the touchdown.  Following the extra point the game was tied at 20.  That’s when the Bluejays ran away and hid with the game.

Aust went off in the third and fourth quarters for Cimarron.  He had three second half touchdowns and finished the game with 161 yards and five touchdowns.  Cimarron is now 3-2 on the season and will play their third straight road game in Elkhart on Friday.  TMP drops their third straight game and are 1-4 on the season.  The Monarchs will host Oakley on Friday night.

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team started off MIAA play with a 3-1 win over Southwest Baptist on Friday night (Oct. 2). The Tigers moved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Bearcats fell to 0-9 overall, 0-3 in the MIAA.

MIAA leading scorer Mauricio Castorino put FHSU up 1-0 when he scored the first of his two goals just 2:05 into the game. Just over eight minutes later, he struck again when he received a ball from Joe Albright in the middle of the SBU box and rifled it pass the diving keeper to put the Tigers up 2-0 in the 11th minute.

Albright added to the Tiger lead when he found himself one-on-one with the SBU keeper. After a shifty move to avoid a diving attempt by the keeper he was able to just tap it in for his first goal of the year and pushing the FHSU lead to 3-0 in the 60th minute.

SBU’s Garrett Gibson had a goal for the Bearcats in the 73rd minute, but FHSU’s early effort was just too much to overcome and the score stood 3-1 at the sound of the final horn.

FHSU’s Michael Yantz picked up his seventh win of the season, recording one save. FHSU outshot SBU 25-5 in the match.

The Tigers’ next contest is Sunday when they take on the defending MIAA champs Northeastern State at 1:30 pm. The match is on the back end of a doubleheader at FHSU Soccer Stadium as the women take on Central Missouri at 11 am. There will be FREE ADMISSION to all ages and $1 hot dogs and popcorn while supplies last.

FHSU volleyball swept at No. 13 Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State’s hopes of knocking off consecutive ranked opponents were dashed on Friday night as No. 13 Central Missouri cruised by a count of 3-0. The Jennies took sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19, and 25-11, providing too much offense for the Tigers to overcome.

The Tigers had no answer for Maddie Jones, who put down 16 kills with no errors on 24 attempts. She hit .667 for the match. Carly Sojka was also nearly unstoppable, tallying 14 kills with just two errors on 29 attempts for a .414 hitting percentage. Sojka also chalked up 17 digs for a double-double, while Annie Reilly gave the Jennies solid defense with 18 digs.

UCM (14-2, 2-1 MIAA) hit .379 in the match, posting hitting percentages north of .400 in the first and third sets. The Jennies had 19 kills and just two errors in the first set, hitting .459, then 16 kills with just one error in the third, hitting .536.

After just 10 kills as a team in both the first and second sets, the Tiger offense really sputtered in the third with just six kills. Mallory Flagor and Sydney Dixon led the team in kills with six each. Hannah Wagy had 21 assists and Kailey Klibbe had 14 digs.

The Tigers look to bounce back at Lindenwood on Saturday evening at 7 pm in St. Charles, Mo. FHSU enters the match at 9-7 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA.

Moosburger lifts FHSU women’s soccer to double overtime win over Lindenwood

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – A total of 102 minutes and 15 seconds passed before a winner could be determined in an MIAA match-up between Fort Hays State and Lindenwood on Friday evening. Cassi Moosberger broke a scoreless tie with a goal in double overtime to lift the Tigers to a 1-0 shutout.

In the second overtime, Taryn Schnell got a run up the right side of the field before crossing the ball to the middle of the field where Gabrielle Makatura found Moosburger for the game-winning strike. Schnell and Makatura both picked up assists on the play.

Lindenwood goalkeeper Jordan Gnolfo took the hard-luck loss as she saved five shots in the match. FHSU’s Kristen Thompson moved to 4-3 between the pipes by saving four shots in her third shutout win of the season. The match was evenly contested, FHSU with 13 total shots to Lindenwood’s 11.

The Tigers, now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA, set their eyes on Sunday for a meeting with the No. 1 team in the nation. Central Missouri comes to town for an MIAA match at 11 am. There is FREE ADMISSION to the match for all ages and there will be $1 hot dogs and popcorn while supplies last.

Royals put big dent in Twins’ wild-card bid with win

By DAVE CAMPBELL
AP Sports Writer

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ben Zobrist put a major dent in Minnesota’s postseason bid with an RBI double in the eighth inning against struggling All-Star Glen Perkins, and the Kansas City Royals topped the Twins 3-1 on Friday night.

Perkins, hampered by neck and back trouble that led to him losing the closer role, spoiled a stellar start by Ervin Santana (7-5) with a first-pitch fastball that Zobrist drove off the wall in right-center field. Zobrist then scored when right fielder Torii Hunter fumbled a single by Mike Moustakas.

The Twins entered the night trailing Houston by one game and tied with Los Angeles in the AL wild-card race. The Angels beat Texas, and the Astros played later at Arizona.

Chris Young gave the defending AL champion Royals another reason to consider him for the postseason rotation, giving up four hits in 6 1-3 innings.

Louis Coleman (1-0), Ryan Madson and Wade Davis wrapped up the win, with Davis notching his 16th save in 17 attempts.

Gomes helps Royals beat White Sox

KC Royals Logo 6CHICAGO (AP) – Jonny Gomes drove in three runs, and the banged-up Kansas City Royals moved into a tie with Toronto for the AL’s best record with a 6-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Kansas City played without outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Rios, and designated hitter Kendrys Morales (left quad tightness) and catcher Salvador Perez (swelling in right thumb) each departed during the game. Cain was sidelined by a sore right knee, and Rios was scratched because of a stiff back.

All four players are day to day, and the AL Central champions held on for their second straight victory against the lowly White Sox. Kris Medlen (6-2) pitched six innings of two-run ball, and Ryan Madson tossed a perfect ninth for his third save.

Kansas City (92-67) finishes the season with three games at Minnesota, while Toronto, which holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Royals, closes with a weekend series at Tampa Bay.

Kansas still awaiting clearance for touted freshman Diallo

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

Kansas Jayhawk LogoLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Touted freshman Cheick Diallo has been cleared to begin practicing with Kansas this week. The forward is still awaiting word from the NCAA on whether he can play this season.

The five-star prospect from Mali attended Our Savior New American, a private high school in Centereach, New York. But the legitimacy of the school’s classes has come under scrutiny by the NCAA, and Alabama and Oklahoma State have had recruits from there ruled ineligible.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self said Thursday on the eve of practice that he is confident Diallo will be cleared. But he also said there is also no timetable for a decision.

Kansas plays its exhibition opener against Pittsburg State on Nov. 4.

Hosmer’s homer lifts Royals over White Sox in 10 innings

By BRIAN SANDALOW
Associated Press

KC Royals Logo 6CHICAGO (AP) – Eric Hosmer hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Wednesday night to clinch home-field advantage in an AL Division Series.

Ben Zobrist singled with one out, and Hosmer drove a pitch from David Robertson (6-5) into the bullpen in right field to give the Royals the lead. For Hosmer, it was his 18th homer of the season.

Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas also homered for Kansas City, which had already clinched the AL Central title. They will host the first two games of their ALDS, and a Game 5 if necessary.

Combined with Toronto splitting its doubleheader in Baltimore, the Royals pulled within a game of the Blue Jays for home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs. Toronto did win the season series, giving it the tiebreaker over the Royals.
