Hays High Picks Up First Win

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians went on the road Friday night trying to find their first win of the year under head coach Randall Rath.  The Indians first destination of the season was Liberal, a team they had defeated six consecutive years.

The Indians opened the game with a 54 yard run by quarterback Kohlton Meyers and followed it up four plays later with a Hunter Brown seven yard score.  The Indians held Liberal to punts on their first two possessions, not allowing the Redskins to pass midfield.

Hays would score on their third possession of the game when Meyers hit Keith Dryden on a 35 yard touchdown pass to give Hays a 14-0 lead in the 2nd quarter.  Hays forced another Liberal punt but couldn’t capitalize in Redskin territory fumbling the ball.  Three plays after the Hays fumble, Maddux Winter picked up a Liberal fumble forced when Shane Berens ripped the ball from the quarterback. Hays would score four plays later on a Brown 21 yard run on third down.  A two-point conversion put the Indians up 22-0 at half time.

Highlights:

The second half featured just one touchdown.  Maddux Winter intercepted a pass and returned it to the 28 yard line.  That set up an Indian touchdown down just five plays later putting Hays up 29-0.  The Indians would hold that same score through the remainder of the game twice turning away Liberal on fourth down in Hays territory.

Coach Randall Rath:

Kohlton Meyers ran for 132 yards.  Hunter Brown rushed for 116 and three scores.

The Indians held Liberal to just 150 total yards.

Hays is 1-2 and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Liberal drops to 1-2 and 0-1.  Hays will host Garden City next week for Homecoming.

What was once a crowded field battling for the starting quarterback job at Kansas State has suddenly grown thin. After losing starter Jesse Ertz to a knee injury on the first possession of the opening game of the season against South Dakota, the Wildcats have now lost backup Alex Delton. The true freshman from Hays High reportedly injured his knee while closing out K-State’s victory at Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.

Broncos complete stunning comeback, beat Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Denver cornerback Bradley Roby returned Jamaal Charles’ second fumble 21 yards for a touchdown with 27 seconds remaining, completing a stunning comeback in the Broncos’ 31-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Peyton Manning threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns, the last to Emmanuel Sanders with 36 seconds left as the Broncos (2-0) appeared headed for overtime. But on the next play by the Chiefs (1-1), Charles was stripped by Brandon Marshall and the ball bounced right into Roby’s hands.

The dramatic about-face came after Knile Davis gave Kansas City the lead with 2:27 left on an 8-yard run, raising hope among a sellout crowd that the Chiefs might finally end some curses.

Instead, Denver pushed its winning streak to seven straight over its AFC West rival, while Manning improved to 14-1 in his career against the Chiefs.

Infante drives in 7 runs as Royals down Indians

By TOM WITHERS
AP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND (AP) – Omar Infante drove in a career-high seven runs and the Kansas City Royals overcame some early sloppiness for an 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.

Infante, a veteran infielder making his first start in 11 days, hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Corey Kluber (8-14), added a two-run double in the fifth after the Indians pulled their ace and a two-run single in the seventh.

Infante also had a sacrifice and nearly matched the offensive output of teammate Mike Moustakas, who set a team record with nine RBIs on Saturday against Baltimore. Needing a triple to hit for the cycle, Infante lined out to center field in the ninth.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Francisco Lindor, making a late run for AL Rookie of the Year, was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 5-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Danny Salazar (13-8) took a three-hit shutout into the seventh before Mike Moustakas started the inning with a home run. The right-hander allowed one run and struck out six in seven innings.

Lindor, who has now topped 100 hits since being called up from the minors on June 14, began the fifth with an outstanding play at shortstop. He dove to his left to come up with Alex Rios’ ground ball and made a one-hop throw to first from his knees for the out.

Danny Duffy (7-8) allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings for Kansas City, which has dropped nine of 12.

KC Royals Logo 6CLEVELAND (AP) – Kris Medlen pitched five-hit ball over 6 1-3 innings and Alex Rios hit a home run that launched some unintentional fireworks, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

Medlen (4-1) stifled the Indians before Royals manager Ned Yost turned things over to his top-ranked bullpen. Ryan Madson struck out two in the seventh, Wade Davis got through the eighth and Greg Holland worked around a two-on, no-out mess he created in the ninth for his 31st save.

Rios homered in the fifth inning off Josh Tomlin (5-2) for the Royals, who won for just the third time in 11 games as they close in on a probable AL Central title.

The Indians, who pulled back to .500 for just the second time since April by winning the series opener, fell to 13-6 since Aug. 25.
