14th-ranked FHSU men’s soccer knocks off 12th-ranked CSU-Pueblo on the road

FHSU Athletics

PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer bounced back from a 4-2 loss at UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night to win a battle of top-15 ranked teams in NCAA Division II on Sunday. The 14th-ranked Tigers fell down 1-0 early, but rallied to defeat 12th-ranked CSU-Pueblo 2-1 in Pueblo.

The Tigers surrendered a goal in the sixth minute of the match, but about 12 minutes later they found the equalizer with a magnificent bicycle kick goal by Mauricio Castorino. The goal came on a long ball sent to the other end of the field from goalkeeper Michael Yantz. After Yantz’s kick bounced once and a CSU-Pueblo player headed the ball further, Castorino adjusted at the top of the box and stunned the goalkeeper with the dazzling kick that clipped the top of his glove before finding the goal.

The Tigers took the lead in the 63trd minute on Tomiwa Olaniran’s first goal of the season, assisted by Castorino. The Tiger defense and goalkeeper Yantz made the 2-1 lead stand up over the next 27 minutes, pushing the Tigers to 3-1 on the season. CSU-Pueblo moved to the same mark, suffering its first loss of the season.

Yantz is now 3-1 on the season at goalkeeper. CSU-Pueblo had 11 shots in the match, but Yantz only had to save one. The Tigers put seven of their 13 shots in the match on net as CSU-Pueblo keeper Sam Haseltine saved five.

The Tigers finally play their first home match of the 2015 season on Saturday (Sept. 18) against Lubbock Christian. The match is set for 7 pm at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

Chiefs Helmet 2HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Smith threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Kansas City Chiefs built a big lead and held on for a 27-20 victory over the mistake-prone Houston Texans on Sunday.

Travis Kelce caught two touchdown passes in the first quarter, the first one coming after Kansas City intercepted Brian Hoyer on his first throw as a Texan.

The Chiefs were up by 14 in the second quarter when Justin Houston sacked Hoyer, forcing a fumble. Kansas City recovered it and a 7-yard touchdown reception by Jamaal Charles pushed the lead to 27-6.

Hoyer struggled in his debut before Ryan Mallett took over with about six minutes left and led Houston on two scoring drives to cut the lead to a touchdown.

Kansas Jayhawk LogoLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Paxton Lynch threw for 354 yards and two scores, Memphis scored on its first five possessions of the second half and the Tigers rolled to a 55-23 victory over Kansas on Saturday night.

The Tigers (2-0) also piled up 281 yards rushing and five touchdowns, one apiece from five different players. They finished with 651 yards of total offense, while their point total was the most the Jayhawks (0-2) had allowed since Georgia Tech hung 66 on them on Sept. 17, 2011.

Memphis also pushed its winning streak to nine straight dating to last season, and snapped an infuriating 19-game skid against teams from power conferences.

The Jayhawks, riding a five-game losing streak, are still searching for their first victory for coach David Beaty. The last time Kansas lost its first two games was 2002.

Hubener leads K-State to win in first start

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Making his first career start at quarterback on any level, Joe Hubener led the Kansas State Wildcats to a 30-3 victory against the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome.

The victory snapped Kansas State’s seven-game losing streak at indoor facilities. The Wildcats’ previous victory indoors was 1993 against Minnesota in the now-defunct Metrodome.

Hubener had a career-high 243 yards passing, completing 12 of 23 attempts, and also rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

He is taking over for Jesse Ertz, who suffered a season-ending knee injury on the third play of Kansas State’s opener last week.

UTSA’s (0-2) defense appeared to fluster Hubener early, sending multiple defenders on blitzes.

Hubener settled in after the initial drive, guiding Kansas State (2-0) to three straight scoring drives to open the second half.

The Wildcats amassed 418 total yards.

TMP 38, Ellis 16

It has been nearly two years since the TMP Monarchs won a football game.  They had lost 12 games in a row going into Friday night’s match-up in Ellis with the Railroaders.  The battle was on early.

Ellis took the opening kickoff deep into TMP territory and 10 plays later quarterback Easton Smith connected with Clay Fiek on a 23 yard touchdown pass with just over 6 minutes to play in the first quarter.  TMP would roll in for their first score of the season on a 7 yard touchdown run from TJ Flax with 25 seconds left in the first quarter that tied the game at 7.

TMP scored midway through the second quarter on a 50 yard touchdown pass from Chase Romme to Jared Schumacher that put the Monarchs on top 14-7.  Schumacher would tally another score with 2:40 left in the second quarter when he scooped up a Railroader fumble and went 58 yards untouched for a 14 point lead.  Ellis would add a safety late in the first half to make it a 21-9 game at the break.

The second half belonged to TMP as the Monarchs outscored the Railroaders 17-7 down the stretch thanks to two long Romme touchdown runs.  Romme finished 90 yards rushing and 107 yards through the air.  Dalton Hensley led Ellis with 76 yards, which included a 42 yard touchdown run.

Ellis drops to 0-2 on the season and will play Maur Hill-Mounty Academy on Friday in Abilene.  With the win TMP snaps that 12 game losing streak and improves to 1-1 on the season.  The Monarchs will host Smith Center on Friday night at Lewis Field stadium to open up their home part of their schedule.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Hays Falls To Great Bend

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians opened their defense of the Western Athletic Conference title against Great Bend on Friday night.  The Indians had won 20 of their last 24 WAC games since the 2009 season entering this season.

Hays High held Great Bend out of the end zone after a 14 play to open the game.  On the Indians first drive, Hunter Brown ripped off a 69 yard scoring drive to go up 7-0.  The two teams would trade scores and fumbles in the first half with Great Bend taking a lead at 12-7 following a Jacob Murray touchdown run.  The Indians regained the lead at 14-12 on the next play on a double pass from Kohlton Meyers to Maddux Winter who then launched it to Keith Dryden for a 77 yard touchdown pass.

Great Bend retook the lead with 7:58 left in the first half recovering an Indian fumble 23 yards for a touchdown and a 18-13 lead.  Great Bend to that point was 0-3 on two point conversion attempts.  The Panthers regular kicker was injured earlier in the week and was unavailable.  Hays retook the lead the next play when Hunter Brown found pay dirt from 80 yards out.  A Logan Clark extra point gave Hays a 21-18 lead at half time.

Highlights:

The second half largely belonged to Great Bend.  The Indians fumbled on their first possession of the 2nd half setting up a 7 yard touchdown pass from Jacob Murray to Brayden Smith for the go ahead score at 26-21.  Hays couldn’t get the offense going until the fourth quarter, but did so in time to give the Indians a chance to come back.

Hays stopped Great Bend on fourth and goal from the one yard line, setting up a 96 yard touchdown drive that was capped on a one handed catch by Keith Dryden.  With 7:04 left in the Indians converted on a two point attempt to get within three at 32-29.

The play to decide the game came on the next Great Bend drive.  The Panthers converted a 4th and 2 yards into a 49 yard touchdown pass from Murray to Lytle to take a 40-29 lead following a two point conversion.

Coach Randall Rath:

The Indians were led on offense by Hunter Brown with 170 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  Keith Dryden caught three passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

Hays falls to 0-2 and 0-1 in the WAC.  Great Bend is 2-0 and 0-1.

The Indians are on the road to Liberal next Friday.
