Phillipsburg pulls away late, blanks TMP

By JEREMY McGUIRE

Phillipsburg 35, TMP 0

The second ranked team in Class 2A, Phillipsburg, got more than they bargained for from a pesky TMP Monarch team on Friday night.  The Panthers used two short fields in the first half, following errant punt snaps from TMP, and turned both of those short fields into touchdowns.

The first of those scores a one yard run by Phillipsburg senior Brock Means which made it 7-0 with 1:28 to go in the first quarter.  TMP would get the ball back and go three and out.  Phillipsburg would take advantage of another short field, scoring on a 15 yard touchdown run from Kirk Coomes on the first play of the second quarter that made it 14-0.

That score would hold all the way to the first play of the fourth quarter when Coomes scored his second touchdown of the game on an 11 yard scamper that made it 21-0.  The Panthers would score two more times which pushed the final score to 35-0

TMP had only four yards of total offense while Phillipsburg tallied 345 total yards.  The Monarchs play their second road game of the season on Friday in Ellis.  Phillipsburg will host Norton in a Mid-Continent League Power tilt.

Indians Drop Season Opener

By Dustin Armbruster

The Olathe Northwest Ravens made the long trip west worth it on Friday night as they beat the Hays High Indians 23-9.  Northwest took the opening kick-off to the Indian’s 15 yard line.  Hays High forced a fumble on the first play from scrimmage to set a defensive tone to the night.

Neither team could score until the 4:00 mark of first quarter when the Ravens converted on a 27 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.  The Hays High defense allowed only those three points despite Northwest starting each of the first three possessions in Hays High territory.

Highlights

Hays was held to a three and out and forced to punt, when Kohlton Meyers boomed a 69 yard punt that landed at the one.  Hays High used two of their three time outs to force the Ravens to punt into the wind.  The strategy paid off the the Ravens punt blew backwards landing at the two yard line and rolled out of the side of the end zone for a 3-2 score.

Hays would give up one more first half score when Ravens quarterback Easton Crupper hit tight end David Burton on a 30 yard pass on 3rd and 17.  The two point conversion would fail, resulting in a 9-2 halftime score.

Hays again could not get the offense going in the second half and found themselves trailing 23-2 in the fourth quarter.  The Indians then put together the best drive of the young season.  Hays traveled 87 yards on 14 plays and found pay dirt when Isaiah Blackmon scored from 16 yards out for the final score of 23-9.

Hays falls to 0-1 on the season and will host Great Bend next Friday night to open Western Athletic Conference play.  The Indians are the defending WAC champions.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lorenzo Cain hit a three-run homer, Paulo Orlando added a two-run shot and Kendrys Morales drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals routed the Detroit Tigers 15-7 on Thursday night to wrap up another series win.

Ben Zobrist drove in two runs for the Royals, whose 15 runs and 20 hits were their most since piling up 21 hits in a 16-8 victory at Colorado on July 3, 2011.

Chris Young (10-6) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief of Edinson Volquez, who yielded six runs, eight hits and a walk in three innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Yordano Ventura struck out 11 over seven sharp innings, the Royals hit four home runs and Kansas City rolled to a 12-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

Kendrys Morales hit a three-run shot, Cheslor Cuthbert added his first career homer, and Ben Zobrist and Lorenzo Cain also went deep as the AL Central leaders cranked out 14 hits.

Ventura (10-7) walked one and hit one while matching a career high for strikeouts set in his last start. The 24-year-old with the 100 mph fastball has not allowed more than two earned runs in his last five outings, and is 6-0 since his last defeat July 20 against Pittsburgh.

Randy Wolf (0-3) gave up eight runs in 3 2-3 innings for Detroit, though he did last longer than Miguel Cabrera. The slugger was tossed by third base umpire Gary Cederstrom after fanning in the third inning, and after a quarrel with plate umpire Quinn Wolcott proved fruitless.

Kansas dismisses DB Boateng for violating team rules

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas has dismissed cornerback Matthew Boateng for an undisclosed violation of team rules just three days before the Jayhawks open the season against South Dakota State.

Jayhawks coach David Beaty announced the decision in a brief statement Wednesday.

Boateng, a sophomore from Toronto, played in eight games as a freshman, making nine tackles with an interception and forced fumble. But exactly where he was on the Jayhawks’ depth chart was unknown because Beaty has yet to release one to the media.

Still, the loss of any experience is a blow to the Jayhawks. They return just four starters from last season, and more than two dozen players are expected to make their Division I debut on Saturday against the Jackrabbits.
