KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Justin Verlander threw his fifth consecutive quality start, and Ian Kinsler homered and drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 Tuesday night.

The Tigers, who had lost nine of 10 to drop into last place in the AL Central, snapped a four-game losing streak.

Verlander (3-6) limited the Royals to seven hits and four runs, two unearned, over 6 2-3 innings. He has a 0.76 ERA in his past five starts and the Tigers’ lone two victories since Aug. 19, including a one-hit shutout of the Angels in his previous outing.

Johnny Cueto (2-4), who the Royals acquired in a July 26 trade with Cincinnati, allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings. Cueto has given up 38 hits in his past four starts, the most hits he has allowed in his career over a four-start span.

Chiefs tight end Kelce out with ankle injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tight end Travis Kelce will miss the Chiefs’ preseason finale Thursday night against St. Louis after spraining his ankle in practice earlier this week.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Tuesday it was a slight sprain and Kelce would have been able to play had it been the regular season. But with most of the starters getting the night off – if not all of them – it only made sense to keep Kelce out of the game.

Reid also said tight end Demetrius Harris could see time against the Rams. He returned to practice this week after a pair of surgeries to repair a fractured foot.

Harris’s return was complicated by a staph infection that developed during his recovery.

Kansas City Royals hit by chickenpox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Royals All-Star pitcher Kelvin Herrera and right fielder Alex Rios have been diagnosed with chickenpox, raising concerns that others on the AL Central-leading team may have been exposed.

Team officials said Tuesday that Herrera and Rios will likely miss a couple of weeks as the season wraps up. Both players were sent home from Tampa Bay after experiencing symptoms over the weekend.

The Royals have reached out to players, coaches and their families to determine whether anyone else has had chickenpox or may be at risk.

The disease is highly contagious, spread through the air via coughing or sneezing and sometimes by touching. It causes a blister-like rash, fever and tiredness. It can be serious for people with weakened immune systems.

The Royals also recalled infielders Christian Colon and Cheslor Cuthbert along with catcher Francisco Pena from Triple-A Omaha, and outfielder Terrance Gore from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Right-hander Miguel Almonte and left-hander Scott Alexander also joined the club from Omaha.

Gordon has been out since July 8, when he crumpled to the warning track while chasing down a fly ball in a game against Tampa Bay. He had spent eight games rehabbing in Omaha.

Gomes was acquired late Monday in a trade with Atlanta.

K-State picks sophomore Jesse Ertz to start at QB; Delton listed as co-backup

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State sophomore Jesse Ertz has won a four-way competition to start at quarterback Saturday in the season opener against South Dakota.

Ertz beat out junior Joe Hubener and freshman Alex Delton, who were listed as co-backups on the depth chart released Tuesday. Junior college transfer Jonathan Banks was also in the mix but chose to redshirt rather than sit deeper on the chart.

Ertz was the third-string quarterback behind Jake Waters and Hubener a year ago, and has never attempted a college pass. He appeared in four games a year ago, running seven times for 46 yards in the Wildcats’ option-style offense.

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder pointed to consistency as one of the reasons Ertz won the job.

AL Central-leading Royals make deal to get Gomes from Braves

ATLANTA (AP) – The AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals have reached a deal to get outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Atlanta Braves.

Terms of the deal weren’t immediately disclosed.

Gomes left Monday night’s game in Atlanta against Miami after the fifth inning, hugged his teammates in the dugout and began packing up his belongings in the clubhouse.

The 34-year-old Gomes has been in the postseason four times since 2010 and helped Boston win the World Series two years ago. The Red Sox traded Gomes and ace Jon Lester to Oakland last year for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and a draft pick.

Gomes hit .221 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in 195 at-bats with Atlanta. He was playing left field for the Braves, and has been a designated hitter during his career. He also pitched Friday in a blowout loss.

Kansas City, last year’s AL champion, began the day 13 games up in the AL Central. The Braves started the day 18 games out of first place in the NL East.

Other players waived by the Chiefs were tight end Adam Schiltz; wide receivers Kenny Cook, Jeret Smith and L’Damian Washington; offensive linemen Charles Tuaau, Marcus Reed and Anthony Dima; defensive lineman Vaughn Martin; and defensive backs Kenneth Penny and Aaron Hester.

Guyer, Kiermaier hit HRs help Rays beat Royals

KC Royals Logo 6ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Brandon Guyer and Kevin Kiermaier homered, and the Tampa Bay bullpen held the Kansas City Royals to one hit over five innings Sunday in the Rays’ 3-2 win.

Kiermaier’s sixth-inning homer off Luke Hochevar (1-1) broke a 2-2 tie. It was Kiermaier’s second homer in two games and sixth of the season.

Xavier Cedeno (3-1) got the win in relief while Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth for his 32nd save.

Four of Kansas City’s seven hits came during a two-run third that included RBIs by Ben Zobrist and Lorenzo Cain.

The AL Central-leading Royals, who lost for only the sixth time in 23 games, had a chance to tie it in the eighth when Rays first baseman James Loney completed a double play by throwing Zobrist out at the plate.

Rays starter Nathan Karns gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five.
