Royals rely on bullpen to squeak by Orioles

By DAVE SKRETTA

KC Royals Logo 6KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kendrys Morales hit a solo homer, Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer also drove in runs and the Kansas City Royals leaned on their bullpen to beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Danny Duffy (7-6) dodged trouble for most of 5 2-3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. The left-hander struck out five in a start that began in crisp efficiency and ended with the Orioles threatening to pull ahead in the sixth inning.

Luke Hochevar calmed things down with an inning of relief, though. Kelvin Herrera had no trouble with the rest of the seventh and eighth, and Wade Davis pitched a perfect ninth in place of closer Greg Holland to earn his 12th save.

Miguel Gonzalez (9-10) allowed all three runs on six hits and three walks in 4 1-3 innings.

FHSU adds three transfers and two freshmen for 2015

FHSU Sports Information
Fort Hays State men’s basketball coach Mark Johnson announced the addition of five newcomers to the four that signed early with the program, bringing the total list of newcomers for the 2015-16 season to nine. The Tigers add on three transfers; Kenny Enoch, Rob Davis, and Lake Reed and two freshmen; Stefan Krsmanovic and Emir Sabic to field a squad of 16 for the upcoming season.

The transfers are solid shooters from the perimeter. All three shot over 40 percent beyond the 3-point line in 2014-15 at their respective junior colleges.

Enoch, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., led Barton (Kan.) Community College in 3-point field goals made (78) and 3-point field goal percentage (.443) as a sophomore, averaging 14.1 points per game. He was also rock solid at the free-throw line, where he shot 82.9 percent, and contributed 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.

A native of Detroit, Mich., Davis led Pratt (Kan.) Community College in 3-point field goals made (89) and 3-point field goal percentage (.486) as a sophomore in 2014-15. He shot at an 80.5 percent clip at the free-throw line, while adding 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He had a tremendous freshman season as well, burying 75 3-point field goals and shooting at an 88.1 percent clip at the free-throw line.

Reed joins the Tigers from Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College. A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Reed shot 48.7 percent from the field and 45.2 percent beyond the 3-point line as a sophomore in 2014-15. He averaged 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, while also shooting 75 percent at the free-throw line.

Krsmanovic and Sabic have traveled overseas to play for the Tigers. Krsmanovic is a 6-foot, 7-inch post player from Gornji Milanovac, Serbia, who has the ability to knock down the long range jumper. Sabic, a native of Zagreb, Croatia, stands at 6-foot, 2-inches and has the ability to play both point guard and shooting guard. He was a member of the team that won the 2014 Croatian Junior Championship and a member of the U16 and U19 Croatian National Teams.

The five newcomers join freshmen Trey O’Neil, Kyler Kinnamon, Brady Werth, and Aaron Nicholson, who signed early with the Tigers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Omar Infante led a seven-run charge in the sixth inning to support a strong start by Kris Medlen, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-3 on Monday night.

Despite working on a pitch count, Medlen (2-0) lasted six innings in his first start since Sept. 27, 2013, with Atlanta. The right-hander allowed five hits – one of them a two-run homer by Adam Jones in the first inning – while striking out six without a walk.

Medlen, who returned last month after his second Tommy John surgery, made seven appearances out of the Kansas City bullpen before replacing Jeremy Guthrie in the starting rotation.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Montell Cozart will be under center for new Kansas coach David Beaty when the Jayhawks begin their season Sept. 5 against South Dakota State.

Beaty announced Monday that the junior had won the competition for starting quarterback.

Beaty said, “He is a very bright, hard-working, smart dude.

“He’s what you want. I love the dude that he is. Our team loves him.”

Cozart started three games as a freshman in 2013 and the first five games last season before Michael Cummings took over. But when Cummings sustained a season-ending left knee injury in the spring game, it appeared the job would be Cozart’s to lose.

Still, Beaty made him earn it in a competition with talented junior college transfer Deondre Ford and a pair of freshmen, Ryan Willis and Carter Stanley.

Packers lose WR Jordy Nelson for the season to injury

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Nelson, one of the top targets for NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, was injured Sunday in a preseason loss at Pittsburgh. The team said Monday only that he suffered a “significant right knee injury” that would cost him the season.

Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said the team had hoped for good news in a re-evaluation of Nelson’s injury. Instead, the Packers will be without a playmaker who set career highs in receptions (98) and yards receiving (1,519) in 2014.

Royals rally with 4 in 9th to beat Red Sox

KC Royals Logo 7BOSTON (AP) — Mike Moustakas’ two-run double capped a four-run ninth inning that carried the AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals to an 8-6 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Moustakas also had a solo homer and RBI double for Kansas City, which salvaged a split of the four-game series.

Boston led 6-4 going into the ninth. After left fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. threw out Omar Infante trying for an inside-the-park homer for the first out, Kansas City rallied with four hits against Junichi Tazawa (2-6), tying it on Eric Hosmer’s two-run single. Moustakas hit a bases-loaded double to right.

Chris Young (9-6) retired one batter and Wade Davis got the final three outs for his 11th save.

Nelson hurt in Packers preseason game

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger look ready for the regular season.

The immediate future for Jordy Nelson seems far more uncertain.

The Green Bay Pro Bowl wide receiver limped off with a potentially serious left knee injury in the first quarter of the Packers’ 24-19 preseason loss to the Steelers on Sunday. Nelson landed awkwardly while trying to cut after making an 8-yard reception on Green Bay’s opening drive and did not return.

Rodgers completed 4 of 5 passes for 57 yards during two series of work, with one drive ending with a touchdown run by Eddie Lacy and the other with Rodgers getting sacked by James Harrison for a safety.

Roethlisberger played into the second quarter, connecting on 11 of 14 for 100 yards a score. Pittsburgh Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey left with a left ankle injury in the first quarter and did not return.

Chiefs hold off Seahawks in second preseason game

By DAVE SKRETTA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Chiefs counterpart Alex Smith struggled behind their unsettled offensive lines in Kansas City’s 14-13 preseason victory over Seattle on Friday night.

Wilson was 9 of 15 for 78 yards, though most of those completions came on his final drive, when tight end Jimmy Graham finally got involved in the game. Otherwise, Wilson spent his half of work running away from Chiefs pass rushers Justin Houston and Dee Ford.

At least he wasn’t throwing to the wrong team.

Smith was pressured so much in the first half that he began rushing his throws, and one of them was picked off by Bobby Wagner. The Seattle linebacker returned it untouched 25 yards for a touchdown that gave the Seahawks a 10-7 halftime lead.

Smith finished 11 of 18 for 81 yards with a touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin.

Cueto stumbles and Red Sox beat Royals

BOSTON (AP) — Johnny Cueto had his worst start since coming to Kansas City just before the trading deadline, and the Boston Red Sox beat the AL Central-leading Royals 7-2 on Friday night to send them to their second straight loss.

Cueto (2-2) had allowed just six runs in four previous starts for the Royals. He allowed six earned runs and 13 hits on Friday, striking out three before leaving after six innings. The Royals also committed two errors, leading to another run.

Henry Owens made the longest start of his short career, pitching eight innings of four-hit ball. Blake Swihart had four hits and Mookie Betts three for the Red Sox, who tied a season high with their fourth win in a row.

The Royals entered the series against last-place Boston with a 14½-game lead in the division.

NASCAR’s Bowyer won’t reveal where he’s headed after MWR

Clint Bowyer
Clint Bowyer

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Clint Bowyer won’t tip his hand about his future plans in NASCAR.

Bowyer hardly seems like a driver afraid he won’t find a job now that he has a release from his obligations to Michael Waltrip Racing and team co-owner Rob Kauffman.

Kauffman recently purchased a stake in Chip Ganassi Racing and will focus on that investment in 2016. It means MWR will essentially cease operations at the end of the season, and Bowyer won’t follow Kauffman to the Ganassi shop.

Asked Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway if he’s looking for a one-year contract for 2016 to wait for an opening at a powerhouse team, or if he wants a multi-year contract, Bowyer grinned and said: “Yes. Those are all systems go.”
