A’s sending Ben Zobrist to Royals

By JANIE McCAULEY
AP Baseball Writer

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Oakland Athletics have traded utilityman Ben Zobrist and cash to the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Aaron Brooks and minor league left-hander Sean Manaea.

The teams announced the trade Tuesday. The 34-year-old Zobrist, an infielder and outfielder, batted .268 with six home runs, 20 doubles, two triples and 33 RBIs in 67 games for the A’s, who are last in the AL West.

He joins a Royals team that leads the AL Central a season after beating Oakland in the one-game wild card on the way to its first World Series in 29 years and a seven-game loss to San Francisco.

Zobrist missed a month following arthroscopic left knee surgery in late April for a torn meniscus.

A’s general manager Billy Beane pulled off his second trade in 24 hours and third in six days. Oakland dealt closer Tyler Clippard to the New York Mets on Monday night after trading lefty Scott Kazmir to his hometown Houston Astros last Thursday.

Kansas to open against Chaminade in Maui

Kansas Athletics

Kansas Jayhawk LogoLAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball will face Chaminade on Monday, Nov. 23, in its opening contest of the 2015 Maui Jim Maui Invitational Championship Round bracket at Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii, as the event announced its bracket Tuesday.

All 12 Championship Round games of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be televised by the ESPN family of networks. The Kansas vs. Chaminade matchup is slated for an 8 p.m. CT tip and will be televised on ESPNU.

The loaded field joining Chaminade in the 32nd edition of the premier early-season tournament will include Kansas, Indiana, St. John’s, UCLA, UNLV, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. The Maui Jim Maui Invitational Championship Round will be held Nov. 23, 24 and 25, 2015, on the island of Maui. After opening with host-school Chaminade, KU will play either UNLV or UCLA in its second game Nov. 24and St. John’s, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest or Indiana on the final day, Nov. 25.

“It’s obviously a great field,” head coach Bill Self said. “You have storied programs and programs that are right on the verge of doing something great. When I studied the bracket, I really pointed out what a great field it was. We’ll play Chaminade, which is not a ‘gimme game’ by any stretch, in the first round. I’m sure we’ll be talking to our players about Virginia (top-ranked and lost to Chaminade in 1982) many years ago before we play. Then the second-round matchup, we’re either going to play UCLA or UNLV. UNLV gave us all we wanted last year in the Fieldhouse and UCLA has been to back-to-back Sweet 16s – so it’s good. I know our guys are looking forward to it.”

Kansas returns to Maui for the sixth time overall and third time under Self. KU finished runner-up at the 2011 Maui Invitational and the Jayhawks went on to advance to the school’s 14th Final Four and the national title game later that season. In 2006, KU finished seventh in the event defeating Chaminade, 102-54, on the final day. The Jayhawks are 2-0 versus the Silverswords, having defeated them 89-62 in the 1987 Maui Invitational quarterfinals and in 2006.

Self will be in the same field as his longtime assistant and Jayhawk legend, Danny Manning, but Self was none too sad to see Wake Forest and its head coach on the other side of the bracket. If the two teams cross paths, it would not come until the final day as they were set up on opposite sides.

“I’m actually glad they put Danny (Manning, head coach at Wake Forest) and me in opposite brackets,” Self said. “He and I talked about it and he’s pretty happy about that, too. If we make it to the finals, that would be great for both of us, but I wouldn’t be excited about playing Wake and I don’t think he’d be excited about playing Kansas.”

This will mark the fourth trip to Maui for Self, who has taken two teams to the championship game of the event – Kansas in 2011 and Illinois in 2000. Overall, the Jayhawks are 10-6 in the Maui Invitational and won the 1996 tournament, when Raef LaFrentz earned Tournament MVP honors.

Kansas is also set to face Northern Colorado on Nov. 13 inside Allen Fieldhouse as part of the opening games schedule of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

Kansas enters 2015-16 ranked in the top five nationally in most preseason polls. Under Self, who is entering his 13th season at KU, the Jayhawks return four starters and 11 letterwinners from last season’s team which went 27-9 and won its 11th-straight Big 12 Conference regular-season championship. Included is senior forward Perry Ellis who was an All-Big 12 First Team selection last year as well as junior all-conference guards Frank Mason III (second team) and Wayne Selden, Jr. (third team).

KC Royals Logo 6CLEVELAND (AP) – Eric Hosmer drove in four runs, Kendrys Morales added three RBIs and the Kansas City Royals opened a 10-game road trip with a 9-4 victory over the spiraling Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

Hosmer connected for a three-run homer in the first inning off rookie Cody Anderson (2-2) as the Royals rolled to their AL-leading 60th win and improved to 15-5 in their last 20 games.

Edinson Volquez (10-5) worked into the seventh inning for Kansas City, which will welcome newly acquired ace Johnny Cueto on Tuesday.

Rookie Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer and Carlos Santana had a solo shot for the Indians, who have dropped five straight.

Joe Blanton gave up Lindor’s homer, but worked three innings for his second save.

Cueto to make his debut for Royals on Friday

CLEVELAND (AP) – Newly acquired Royals ace Johnny Cueto will make his debut for Kansas City on Friday in Toronto.

Cueto was acquired on Sunday in a trade with Cincinnati for left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed. Cueto, who won 20 games last season for the Reds, is still getting personal business in order and plans to join the AL’s best team on Tuesday.

The Royals felt they needed a proven top-of-the-rotation starter to solidify their staff and dealt for Cueto, who is 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 19 starts this season. Kansas City’s starters have underachieved and been hurt by injuries. They lost left-hander Jason Vargas for the season due with an elbow injury last week.

Kansas City’s starters are last in the league in innings pitched, and the Royals hope Cueto can eat up some innings and ease the pressure on their excellent bullpen.

A third round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks in May, Lockett left K-State with 249 career catches for 3,710 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also broke the school record for career 100-yard games with 17, seven more than the previous record held by current Green Bay Packer receiver Jordy Nelson.

He was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award while also being named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals traded for Johnny Cueto, and then used Yordano Ventura’s seven sharp innings to beat Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros 5-1 on Sunday.

Ventura (5-7) allowed one run and six hits in just his second win in his last seven starts. The right-hander, who won 14 games last year, was demoted to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday and then recalled the next day after the Royals learned left-hander Jason Vargas would miss the rest of the year with an elbow injury.

Kansas City loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning. After two ground ball resulted in force outs at home, Omar Infante drove in two with a single. Rookie Cheslor Cuthbert followed with a two-run double.

Lorenzo Cain hit his 10th home run of the season in the second, putting the Royals up 5-1.

Astros starter Dallas Keuchel allowed five runs on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings, suffering his fifth loss of the season.

The Royals announced during the game that they had acquired Cueto from Cincinnati for minor league left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed, drawing a big cheer at Kauffman Stadium.

Royals acquire RHP Johnny Cueto from Cincinnati

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have acquired ace right-hander Johnny Cueto in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds, bolstering their chances of returning to the World Series.

The Royals began the day with the best record in the American League. Now they add Cueto to a rotation that lost Jason Vargas to a season-ending elbow injury last week.

The scuffling Reds received left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed in Sunday’s deal. Finnegan was Kansas City’s first-round pick in last year’s draft.

Cueto, who is eligible for free agency after the season, was one of the top starters on the market. He pitched eight scoreless innings in Cincinnati’s 5-2 victory at Colorado on Saturday.

Cueto won 20 games last season and is 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 19 starts this year.

East picks up win in 2015 Kansas Shrine Bowl

The East squad used a potent offense attack and suffocating defense in route to a 21-0 win over the West in the 42nd Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl at Lewis Field Saturday night in Hays.

After the West team went three-and-out on their first possession of the game the East marched right down the field and capped off a nine play drive with a 10 yard touchdown run from Shawnee Heights’ Tony Barksdale Jr.

Barksdale also provided a pair of highlight plays in the second quarter. The first a 68-yard halfback pass to Dalton Schoen of Blue Valley Northwest that set the East up deep inside the West territory – but the East fumbled on the very next play. Barksdale scored the game’s second touchdown in the second quarter on a scene pass from Topeka High quarterback Alec Beatty, giving the East a 14-0 lead.

Troy’s Tristian Speer hooked up with Schoen just 43-seconds into the third quarter on an 84-yard touchdown pass giving the East a 21-0 lead. A lead they would never relinquish.

The East defense held the West without a first-down until early in the second quarter and outgained the West 336 to 136 total yards and racked up 241 yards through the air in the win.

Barksdale was accounted for two touchdowns and 180 total yard and was named the East Most Valuable Player.

Blake Richmeier of Holcomb was named the West MVP. He had a game-high seven tackles.

La Crosse’s Sheldon Schmidt collected five tackles and recorded 1.5 sacks. Central Plains Layne Bieberle had one catch for 28 yards. Both played for the West and are headed to Fort Hays State.

Another FHSU signee – Ben Ewing from St. Thomas Aquinas recorded four tackles and a sack for the East squad.

The East has now won two of the last three games in the series but the West still leads the all-time series 25-15-1.

The Shrine Bowl will return to Emporia in 2016 for the 43rd annual game.

Escobar’s RBI single in 10th lifts Royals past Astros

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alcides Escobar singled home Paulo Orlando with two outs in the 10th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday night.

Orlando singled off Will Harris (4-3) with one out and stole second before Escobar’s game-winning looper to shallow right gave the Royals the win and snapped the Astros’ five-game winning streak.

Kelvin Herrera (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th to pick up the victory.

Carlos Correa’s sacrifice fly gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the sixth, and the Royals tied it on Salvador’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Kazmir pitches well in Astros debut, beating Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Scott Kazmir made a strong first impression on his new teammates.

Kazmir pitched seven strong innings in his Houston debut, leading the Astros to a 4-0 win over the Kanas City Royals on Friday night.

The 31-year-old left-hander limited the Royals to three singles and only runner — Mike Moustakas in the fourth — past first base. Kazmir (6-5), who lowered his ERA to 2.24, retired the final nine batters he faced.

“It’s nice to get the first one out of the way,” Kazmir said. “When you have a defense like I had behind me especially what you see the first couple of innings, you have a lot of confidence out there. I just pitched to contact.”

Kazmir, acquired by the Astros from Oakland on Thursday for two minor leaguers, hasn’t lost a July start since July 10, 2010, going 7-0 in his past 14 starts.

Kazmir met his catcher Jason Castro for the first time just before batting practice.

“He’s going to be huge for us,” Castro said. “Obviously, the reason we went out and got him is exactly what he did tonight, to give us solid innings. We can’t expect him to throw a shutout every time, but that would be nice. That’s exactly what we were hoping to get out of him, to have another arm like that in our rotation is going to be huge.”

Preston Tucker had three of the Astros’ hits, including his fourth home run in five games — a solo shot in the third inning. Colby Rasmus singled home Carlos Correa later in the inning to make it 2-0.

“I hadn’t got a chance to see him pitch this year,” Tucker said of Kazmir. “I knew he was good. I didn’t know what to expect. That was awesome. That’s just what we needed.”

Correa, a 20-year-old rookie who extended his hitting streak to nine games, and Jose Altuve each singled home a run in the fourth inning.

Left-hander Tony Sipp walked Moustakas and gave up a single to Eric Hosmer in the ninth, which prompted manager A.J. Hinch to summon closer Luke Gregerson for the final two outs. Gregerson logged his 21st save in 24 opportunities, getting Kendrys Morales to ground into a game inning double play.

Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (7-6) gave up four runs and 11 hits, matching his season high, and two walks in seven innings. It was the eighth time this season and his third straight start Guthrie has allowed at least eight hits.

It was too much Kazmir for the Royals to overcome.

“He really handled us with fastballs and changeups,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “But changing speeds … his fastball was 93-95. His changeup was 74 to 80. A lot of variation there. Really commanded the ball well, kept the ball down. Busted us in when we started looking away and off-speeded us down and away when we were looking in.”

The Astros won their fifth straight and are 6-1 since the All-Star break. The Royals are 0-4 against the Astros this season.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Astros: INF Jed Lowrie (ligament right thumb tear) has begun a rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Royals: LF Alex Gordon (left groin strain) has started a throwing program, but manager Ned Yost said Gordon is a ways off before returning.

UP NEXT

Astros: RHP Scott Feldman will be making his second start since May 26 and going on the disabled list after knee surgery.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy lost to the Astros on June 30, allowing four runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.
