KC Royals Logo 6OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon homered to back Edinson Volquez, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 5-2 on Friday night.

Unlike when these two teams met in April, when there were bench-clearing scuffles in all three games, there were no signs of lingering animosity. A few players from both clubs exchanged hugs and handshakes before the game, and both managers downplayed talk of any carry-over effect.

Instead the Royals rode the power of Morales and Gordon, and got another strong outing from Volquez.

Pitching against the A’s for the first time since 2007, Volquez (8-4) gave up three hits and one run in seven innings. Volquez also reached 1,000 strikeouts for his career when he fanned Brett Lawrie in the sixth.

Sam Fuld had an RBI double for Oakland, which had its five-game win streak snapped.

Larks shutout in series opener in Derby

Larks jersey - new redThe Derby Twins used a walk and two singles to score a run in the fourth inning and that would be all they would need for a 1-0 win over the Hays Larks in the opening game of their three-game series at Panther Field in Derby.

The Larks only real threat came in the third when Carter Hankins and Brett Anderson both singled to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Brooks Balisterri moved them to second and third with one out but Michael Burns grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Larks would advance only one runner as far as second base the rest of the game.

Justin Vincent picked up the complete game shutout for the Twins, holding the Larks to six hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Cam Roegner (2-1) is the tough luck loser for the Larks, allowing just the one run on five hits over six innings. Roegner struck out four and walked two.

Jacob Campbell had three of the Larks six hits.

The Larks are now 12-12 overall and 9-10 in the Jayhawk League and are now four-games back of first-place Liberal in the North.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Kansas guard Kelly Oubre, Jr., was the overall No. 15 choice of the Atlanta Hawks in the 2015 NBA Draft at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn Thursday

This marks the sixth-straight season a Jayhawk has been selected in the first round. Historically, Oubre becomes the 77th player to be drafted in Kansas men’s basketball history and the 19th in the Bill Self-era.

“Whoever winds up getting me, I’m definitely going to give them 110 percent effort,” Oubre told the ESPN audience after hearing he could be traded to the Washington Wizards. “I want to show everybody what I can do and be great someday.”

An All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, Oubre averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Jayhawks in 2014-15. A member of the 2015 Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, the New Orleans native with a 71-inch wingspan, was second on the KU squad with 41 steals and led the Jayhawks in steals 11 times during the season.

Oubre started 27 games for KU including the last 26 contests, missing only Senior Night as Jayhawk senior Christian Garrett replaced him against West Virginia (3/3).

Named one of 10 finalists for the USBWA Wayman Tisdale Award honoring the top freshman in the country, Oubre was a two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in 2014-15. He recorded three games of 20 or more points, including a career-high 25 points against TCU in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship, March 12, at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He also recorded three double-doubles on the season.

Kansas posted a 27-9 overall record in 2014-15 and won its 11th-straight, 15th Big 12 and NCAA-leading 58th overall conference regular-season championship with a 13-5 league record. The Jayhawks had the toughest schedule in the nation and its 10 victories against Associated Press nationally-ranked teams at tip were the most for KU in a season. Kansas faced 16 ranked teams at tip which were four more than the previous high for a season set three times (1994-95, 2002-03 and 2011-12). Included were 2015 Final Four teams Kentucky and Michigan State.

Liberal rallies past the Larks

Larks-Jersey LogoThe Liberal BeeJays loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly off of DJ Carr as they rally past the Hays Larks 3-2 to take their four-game series three games to one.

The Larks scored two in the fourth on a Reggie Wilson single to grab a 2-0 lead. The BeeJays tied it with two in the sixth. They would use a single, a double and a walk off Allan Beer to load the bases with no outs in the eighth. DJ Carr entered and gave up a sacrifice fly which gave Liberal the lead for good.

The Larks threatened in the ninth. Brooks Balisterri opened the inning with a walk followed by a Reggie Wilson single. Michael Burns was robbed of extra-bases by BeeJay center fielder Gavin Wehby who tracked down his line drive in the left-center field gap for the second out. Jacob Campbell then struck out to end the game.

Beer (0-1) takes the loss, allowing one run on three hits over one inning of relief. Starter Keegan Curtis (Louisiana-Monroe) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings in his Larks debut. DJ Carr gave up one run and didn’t allow a run in two innings of relief.

The Larks fall to 12-11 overall and are 9-9 at the midway point of Jayhawk League where they sit in third place in the North, three-games behind the BeeJays.

The Larks are off Thursday before opening a three-game series against Derby Friday at a site yet to be determined.
