Moustakas, Infante leads Royals past Mariners

KC Royals Logo 6SEATTLE (AP) – Mike Moustakas hit a two-run home run and Omar Infante had a three-run double in a seven-run fourth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 8-2 on Wednesday night.

Alcides Escobar opened the fourth with a single to right off Roenis Elias (4-5), who had retired the first nine batters. Moustakas followed with his seventh homer over the right-field wall.

The Royals would score five more, all with two outs. Infante unloaded the bases with his double to left, then Jarrod Dyson and Escobar each followed with left-field RBI doubles.

Escobar had three hits – two in the fourth – and scored twice. Moustakas had three hits and two RBI.

Ryan Madson (1-1) worked 1-plus inning of hitless relief for the win.

Three Monarchs named to 4A all-state girls’ soccer team

TMP-Marian’s Bailey Hageman has been named to the First Team of the coaches 4A all state girls soccer team. The Monarchs Rachel Hamel and Tyra Youni have been named Second Team. All three helped lead the Monarchs to a 12-4-1 record and a second straight appearance in the 4-1A state quarterfinals.

Larks end skid with win over first-place BeeJays

Larks LogoAugie Gillardo pitched seven solid innings and Corky Welch had three hits to lead the Hays Larks to a 7-1 win over the Liberal BeeJays Tuesday night at Larks Park, ending their three-game losing streak. The victory pulls the Larks (12-10, 9-8) within two games of the first place BeeJays (15-7, 11-6) in the Jayhawk League North Division.

Gillardo (3-1) allowed one run on four hits, striking out five and walking two as he picks up his second straight win. Derek Birginske struck out four over the final two innings for his first save of the season.The Larks broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth inning on a two-out single from Derrick Mount and two-out double from Garrett McKinzie. They then score four in the eighth to blow the game open.

RJ Willaims and Brooks Ballisterri both drove in two.

The Larks go for the split in the four game series Wednsday night. Free admission for the 7 pm game courtesy of Bank of Hays, Werth Financial Management and Farm Bureau Insurance. It’s also Educators night with all area teachers and educators encouraged to attend and be recognized.

Montgomery tosses 4-hitter, Seattle beats Kansas City

KC Royals Logo 6SEATTLE (AP) – Rookie Mike Montgomery tossed a four-hitter against the team that drafted him, Dustin Ackley singled, doubled and homered for his first three-hit game of the season and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Tuesday night.

Montgomery (2-2) became the second Mariners pitcher this season to toss a complete game, joining Felix Hernandez, and he became the 10th rookie in Seattle history to toss a complete game. Montgomery retired 17 straight batters at one point, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing only two base runners after the second inning.

Montgomery was originally drafted by the Royals, but was eventually traded to Tampa Bay before landing in Seattle via trade before the start of this season. He walked none and escaped a bases loaded jam in the first inning before overpowering Kansas City the rest of the way.

Hays ball teams fare well in weekend youth baseball tourney

Hays teams won four of the six age brackets in the National Baseball Congress Feature Points Tournament.

The Hays Larks won in the 8U age division, Hays Cardinals in both 11U and 12U, and Hays Expos in 13U.

The Liberal Rattlers won in both the 9/10U and 14U divisions.

Hays Junior Eagles snap 3-game skid with sweep of Dodge City

The Hays Eagles Junior American Legion baseball team used a four-run first inning to carry them to an 8-4 win in game one of their doubleheader with Dodge City Monday night. They scored four in the second and seven in the third and win the second game 13-4.

The Eagles scored in the first in game one on an RBI single by Trey Van Pelt, a two-run single by Alex Fisher and an RBI single by Tate Garcia.

Cole Murphy allowed four unearned run on seven hits in the complete game victory.

Jace Armstrong had three hits in the second contest including a three-run triple in the third inning of game two. Trey Van Pelt hit a bases loaded double and Jake Dechant an RBI double in the fourth.

The Eagles snap a three-game losing streak with the sweep and improve to 7-9.

 

Larks blown out in Liberal for third straight loss

The Liberal BeeJays raced out to a 5-0 lead after three innings then tacked on five runs late to blow out the Hays Larks 11-1 Monday night at Brent Gould Field in Liberal. It’s the Larks third straight loss which drops them back into last place in the Jayhawk League North at 11-10 overall and 8-8 in the league, three-back of the BeeJays who improve to 15-6 and 11-5.

Larks starter Nick Goza (1-2) gave up five runs on seven hits, two of them home runs, over the first three innings and takes the loss. The BeeJays tacked on five in the eighth to put the game away.

The Larks only run came on a Corky Welch single in the seventh.

The series shifts to Larks Park for the final two games beginning Tuesday night. Free admission for the 7 pm game courtesy of Insurance Planning and Commerce Bank.

Blanton, Escobar lead Royals to win over Mariners

KC Royals Logo 6SEATTLE (AP) – Joe Blanton pitched six-plus innings of two-hit ball, Alcides Escobar had three hits and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Monday night.

Blanton (2-0) struck out seven and worked into the seventh inning before being lifted after allowing a leadoff double.

Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland all pitched one inning of relief. Holland earned his 14th save in 15 opportunities.

Felix Hernandez (10-4) took the loss after allowing four runs, nine hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

Escobar had three singles, drove in a run and scored a run. Mike Moustakas had two hits including an RBI double.

Four-run seventh lifts Liberal past the Larks

A throwing error and a double led to a four-run seventh inning as the Liberal BeeJays rally past the Hays Larks 8-7 Sunday night at Brent Gould Field in Liberal.

The Larks led 7-4 before Derrick Mount’s throwing error scored two to pull the BeeJays within a run. A two-out double off DJ Carr scored the other two runs to give Liberal the lead.

Dan Hawk pitched two innings of relief, allowing four unearned runs and takes the loss.

RJ Williams went 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs scored.

The Larks have now dropped two straight and are two-games back of the BeeJays in the Jayhawk North. The two play Monday night in Liberal before the series shifts to Hays for games Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Hays 11U Cardinals took home the trophy from this weekend’s National Baseball Congress Feature Points Tournament at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex in Hays.

The team knocked off the top-seeded Dodge City Sox 9-4 in the championship game. The Cards went 5-1 in the two-day tournament.

The Hays 11U Blue Devils also fared well in the tournament, beating Russell on Sunday to earn a semi-final berth.

Big Papi hits 476th homer, Red Sox rout Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – David Ortiz passed two Hall of Famers with his 476th home run, and the Boston Red Sox banged out 13 extra-base hits Sunday in a 13-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Hanley Ramirez hit his team-best 15th homer and Mookie Betts also went deep for the Red Sox, who set a season high for runs. Xander Bogaerts had three doubles, and Wade Miley pitched six scoreless innings.

Ortiz homered leading off the fourth inning to move past Stan Musial and Willie Stargell into 28th place on the career home run list.

Betts, Brock Holt and Dustin Pedroia, the first three batters in the lineup, each had three of Boston’s 16 hits. They combined to go 9 for 15 with seven runs and six RBIs.

Betts, who missed the cycle by a single, is batting (.556) with nine extra-base hits in a nine-game hitting streak.

Tribe Soccer Camp begins this week at Pratt-Optimist

There will be a high school/middle school soccer camp from June 23 to 25.

The Tribe Soccer Camp will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each evening.

Due to work at Hays High School, the location of the camp has been changed to Pratt-Optimist Park on Fifth Street. Camp forms can be printed at www.hayshighindians.com under “Athletics.” Participants then can bring them to the first day of camp.

Larks rally falls short against Dodge City

The Hays Larks score two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally comes up short in an 8-5 loss to the Dodge City A’s Saturday night at Larks Park. The loss ends the Larks three-game win streak and drops them to third place in the Jayhawk League North at 11-8 overall and 8-6 in league play, one game back of first place Liberal. The A’s are now 11-7 overall and 7-7.

The Athletics broke open a one-run game in the ninth by scoring four runs on six singles and a throwing error from pitcher Derrick Mount.

The Larks loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and scored two on two-out bases loaded walks to Evan Gruener and Derek Dickerson but Mount popped up to first base to end the game.

Starter Aaron Fletcher takes the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking none.

Newcomer Reggie Wilson hit a two-run homer in the second inning to pull the Larks within a run at 4-3.

The Larks are in Liberal Sunday for the first of a two-game series with the BeeJays.
