McDonald’s of Hays, the Hays Larks and Hays Recreation Commission will have McKid Ball Saturday morning at Dusty Glassman Field, Fourth and Milner.
The event is free, but the registration deadline for boys and girls from age 7 to 10 is Wednesday.
Larks players will coach and pitch to each team, and be available for autographs. Participants will return to Larks Park on Saturday evening to run on the field for the starting lineup with the Larks, throw out the first pitch, and watch the Larks take on the opposing team.
McDonald’s of Hays will sponsor the Larks game, providing free admission for the general public.
The Hays Monarchs 18 and under American Legion baseball team bounced back from their first loss of the season with a pair of blowout wins Monday night. The Monarchs hold the TriCounty Hawks to two runs, winning 10-1 in the game one and 8-1 in game two to run their record to 5-1.
The Monarchs scored two runs in the first in both games then used a five-run fifth and three run sixth to blow open the first game. They scored four in the fourth to take control of the second contest.
Jordan Gottschalk gets the complete game win in the opener, allowing one run on five hits over six innings, striking out two and walking just one. Gottschalk also had three hits and drove in three.
Jared Rack gets the complete game win in game two, allowing the one run on six hits striking out four and walking none. The Monarchs are at Larned for a doubleheader Wednesday.
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer, and normally lights-out reliever Greg Holland struggled in the ninth before the Kansas City Royals held off the Milwaukee Brewers for an 8-5 win Monday night.
The Royals won in manager Ned Yost’s first regular season game back in Milwaukee since being fired by the Brewers late in the 2008 campaign.
But the victory was more difficult than expected after the Royals entered the bottom of the ninth with an 8-2 lead.
Milwaukee got three runs with nobody out off Holland, the closer pitching in a non-save situation. Jonathan Lucroy’s second double of the night made it 8-5 to chase Holland from the game.
Holland’s ERA ballooned from 1.76 to 3.52 after allowing three runs on four hits and a walk.
Wade Davis retired the next three hitters for his eighth save.
The Bethany (OK) Bulls scored seven runs in the seventh inning as they rally from a 6-0 deficit to beat the Hays Larks 13-10 Sunday night at Larks Park for their first win of the season. The Bulls salvage the final game of the three-game series and are now 1-14 and 1-9 in the Jayhawk League. The Larks fall to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in league play.

The Larks used four straight singles in the first to grab a 3-0 first inning lead. They would add three more in the third highlighted by Derek Dickerson’s two-run homer.
The Bulls scored single runs in the fifth and sixth before putting together seven runs on seven hits in the seventh. They would tack on three more in the eighth to go up 12-6. The Larks used a Derrick Mount two-run single and RJ Williams two-run homer to close the gap to 12-10 after eight but could get no closer.
Allan Beer takes the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits over two innings of relief.
The Larks are back at home Tuesday against Dodge City.

Bell allowed five hits while striking out three and walking two to move to 2-1 on the season. He allowed only three runners past first base with one of them thrown out at the plate by Michael Burns to end the fifth inning.
Closer DJ Carr was within one out of preserving the shutout but gave up a two-out single before inducing a fly ball to center for the games final out.
One night after scoring 19 runs in a 19-5 rout, the Larks offense managed just two runs on nine hits squandering three bases loaded situations. They scored their first run a Michael Burns bases loaded walk in the fourth then on a wild pitch in the sixth.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Call-up Tyler Lyons had a solid outing and Mark Reynolds hit the go-ahead homer in the fifth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Kansas City Royals for the second straight day, 3-2 on Saturday.
Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez homered for the Royals, who took two of three from the Cardinals at home last month and will be trying to avoid a sweep in the finale.
Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward each added an RBI for St. Louis, which is a major league-best 41-21 overall and 24-7 at home. The Cardinals used five relievers over the last four innings to hold a one-run lead with Trevor Rosenthal getting the last four outs for his league-leading 21st save in 22 chances.
The Royals’ eighth did not lack for dramatics. Heyward battled the sun to snare Kendrys Morales’ liner while falling on his backside and Rosenthal rallied from a 3-0 count to get Gordon on an infield popup with two on for the third out.
The Hays Larks scored 12 runs in the fifth inning and blowout the Bethany (OK) Bulls 19-5 in their series opener Friday night at Larks Park. The win is the Larks third straight and improves them to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the Jayhawk League. The Bulls, playing in their first season in the Jayhawk League, fall to 0-13 and 0-8.
Jacob Campbell led the Larks 25-hit attack going 6-for-6 with with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Brett Anderson and Carter Hankins both had four hits. RJ Williams and Tracy Hadley also homered.
Derrick Mount allowed two runs on six hits over six innings, striking out five and walking one.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia pitched eight innings of four-hit ball and helped himself with an RBI single for the St. Louis Cardinals, who ended the Kansas City Royals’ four-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory in the opener of a high-profile weekend interleague series on Friday night.
Jon Jay snapped a 2-for-24 slump this month with a two-out RBI triple in the second off Yordano Ventura (3-6), and Garcia followed with his 12th career RBI on an opposite-field single to left.
The Cardinals are 40-21 overall and 23-7 at home, both major league bests. They got a huge outing from Garcia (2-3), so far a success story off thoracic outlet surgery.
Ventura lasted just three innings for the second straight start, removed as a precaution due to weakness in his pitching hand. In those two starts, he’s allowed six earned runs.
Former Hays Lark and current Angels first baseman Albert Pujols continues to climb up career batting lists.
A two-run shot in the ninth inning against the Rays on Thursday put Pujols ahead of Yankee legend Mickey Mantle for sole possession of 16th on the career home run list with 537.
Pujols played for the Hays Larks in the late 1990s.
Next on the list is Philly legend Mike Schmidt with 548 career home runs.
Jacob Campbell had three hits including a triple and Cam Roegner pitched six solid innings to lead the Hays Larks to an 8-2 win over the Haysville Aviators Thursday night in Haysville. The Larks take the final two games of their first road series of the summer and improve to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Jayhawk League. After a 6-0 start, the Aviators have dropped three of four and are now 7-3 and 4-3 in league play.
The Larks struck for four in the first inning then add three in the fifth. Evan Gruener tripled, driving in two and Jacob Campbell singled in the four-run first. Singles from Allan Beer and Corky Welch drove in runs in the fifth.
Cam Roegner (1-0) went six innings allowing two runs on six hits, and picks up the win. The Bradley product struck out five and walking just one.

After seven seasons at the helm of the Hays High softball program, coach Abby Maska has resigned her coaching position. Maska coached the Indians to the 5A state tournament on three occassions. The Indians went to state in back to back seasons in 2011 and 2012, finishing fourth in ’11. During those two seasons, Maska’s team compiled a 42-6 record. The Indians also went to state in 2014 and finished the season 18-5. Over her seven seasons the Indians went 101-54.
Abby Maska said for her “it was just the right time” to step down as head coach and take on some other responsibilities within the school.

A former collegiate player herself (Fort Hays State University) Maska sent a number of players on to compete in the college ranks. Among some of the them, Katelyn Schumacher is currently at the University of Kansas and most recently this season Kaylie Schoendaller signed with Dodge City Community College and Hannah Herald signed to play for FHSU.
Maska will remain in the school district as a teacher, while also being involved in other aspects of education.
Maska who currently teaches AP Government and Sociology, which are both concurrent classes through Barton County Community college, as well as World Geography and Government was also an assistant girls basketball coach and resigned that position as well. Maska is also on the NEA Negotiating Team and pending board approval will be the department chair for Social Studies.
Maska said more than wins and losses, her best memories stem from the relationships she built with the teams and how softball has helped so many girls in different ways and “feels really blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of their lives.”
Athletic Director Chris Michaelis said that a search for a replacement will begin immediately.

Derek Birginske allowed one unearned run on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings for the win. Birginske struck out five and walked five, helping the Larks improve to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the Jayhawk League.
The Larks scored two in the second on a Garrett McKinzie double. Brooks Balisterri drove in the second run of the third with a sacrifice fly.
The Larks close out the three-game series Thursday night before returning home for three with Bethany, Oklahoma beginning Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Alex Gordon hit a three-run homer, Edinson Volquez struck out six batters over seven innings and the Kansas City Royals beat Minnesota 7-2 on Wednesday to finish the first series sweep this season of the Twins at home.
The Twins scored 11 runs while stumbling to a 1-5 record on this home-stand, which handed the division lead back to Kansas City. The Twins hadn’t been swept since the opening series of the season at Detroit.
Their frustration was evident in the eighth, when Torii Hunter was ejected by home plate umpire Mark Ripperger for arguing a called third strike. Hunter had to be restrained briefly, before yanking off his elbow pad, shin guard and batting gloves and throwing them toward the batter’s box.
For good measure, Hunter ripped off his jersey and threw that over the first-base line, before retreating to the dugout.
Manager Paul Molitor was given his first career ejection during the conflict, too.
