Longtime assistant takes over Ellis High School football program

ELLIS — Ellis USD 388 has tabbed longtime assistant coach Craig Amrein as the next head football coach of the Railroaders.

Amrein served as an assistant coach at Ellis for eight seasons under coach Butch Hayes. Before that, he was an assistant to Ryan Cornelsen at La Crosse.

After serving as an assistant coach with Hayes and Cornelsen, Amrein said he is excited to be a head coach.

Amrein also said he believes his familiarity with the players will help to make it a smooth transition.

“I’ve been assistant, I’ve been D (defensive) coordinator and I’ve also been assistant offensive coordinator before, so the kids know what they’re getting into,” Amrein said. “They know what my expectations are.”

From 2006 through 2011, Ellis posted six straight playoff appearances. Since then, the Railroaders have suffered three straight losing seasons, and Amrein said they need to get tougher if they are going to get the program back to where it was.

“Right now, one of the things that I am going to look at it mental toughness,” Amrein said. “We have got to get tougher across the board and a lot of that comes from time in the weight room.”

Amrein is a computer technology teacher at the Ellis High School.

Hayes, who also served as boys basketball coach, departed Ellis for a position at Rock Creek USD 323 in Westmoreland.

The USD 388 approved the hiring of Amrein as the head high school football coach and Brandon Maska as the head boys basketball coach at Monday’s meeting.

Ellis opens the season Sept. 4 at Norton.

Pujols played for the Hays Larks in the late 1990s.

Next on the list is Philly legend Mike Schmidt with 548 career home runs.

Pitching woes continue in Larks loss at Haysville

The Hays Larks rally for three runs in the ninth inning but it was too little too late as they lose 9-4 to the Haysville Aviatiors.  The Larks fall to 4-6 on the year and just 1-4 to start Jayhawk League play while the Aviators improve to 7-1 and 4-1 in their first year in the league.

Young (5-2) left after giving up a triple to Trevor Plouffe with one out in the seventh for his only hit of the game. The 6-foot-10 right-hander struck out two and walked three to bounce back from a pair of ugly starts and put the Royals in a position to sweep the Twins on Wednesday.

On a night when San Francisco’s Chris Heston no-hit the Mets, Young looked prime to equal him as he carved up the slumping Twins lineup through six innings.

NCAA approves 30-second shot clock in men’s basketball

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Men’s basketball teams will play with a quicker shot clock and fewer timeouts next season.

It’s the first time the shot clock has been trimmed since the 1993-94 season, when it went from 45 seconds to 35. Now it goes from 35 seconds to 30. Teams also will have one fewer second-half timeout, and if either team calls a timeout within 30 seconds of a media timeout, it would count as the scheduled break.

On Monday, the NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Panel officially approved both recommendations from the basketball rules committee. The panel also approved extending the arc inside the lane from 3 feet to 4 feet in hopes of reducing collisions.

It also approved a proposal allowing women’s teams to go to four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minute halves.
