Dwight Coleby to Transfer to Kansas

Kansas Athletics

LAWRENCE, Kan.Center Dwight Coleby will be transferring to Kansas after two seasons at Ole Miss. The 6-9, 240-pound Nassau, Bahamas, native has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to attend KU, will sit out the 2015-16 season and have two years eligibility, Kansas head coach Bill Self announced Monday.

Coleby will report to KU in July, after he competes for the Bahamas in the FIBA Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships, June 15-21, in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

“We’ve been keeping an eye on transfers the entire spring due to the fact we lose so many big guys next year,” Self said of 2015-16 KU senior forwards Perry Ellis, Jamari Traylor and Hunter Mickelson. “It would be nice to have a big guy in your program that knew the system, and we can rely on to be a foundation. When Dwight became available, we researched it and watched tape. He’s a exactly what I think we need. He’s a big guy that can play either bigs position. He’s active. He reminds me of a lot of a bigger Jamari or Thomas Robinson-type body. He’s got a great motor. I feel like he can play on the block. He can play facing. He can do a lot of different things. He’s raw offensively, but he’s a premiere athlete and should be a solid rebounder and defender right off the bat.”

Coleby played in all 34 games for Ole Miss in 2014-15, including three starts, where he averaged 5.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 16.5 minutes for the Rebels who finished 21-13 overall, tied for third in the SEC with an 11-7 record and lost to Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Coleby was second on the Ole Miss team with 29 blocked shots and his 4.8 rebounds per game were third-best on the squad. He shot 53.2 percent from the field, which was second-best on the team. His 79.7 percent accuracy from the free throw line was a 27.1 percent improvement from his freshman year. Coleby posted six games in double-figure scoring and had his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at then-No. 19 Arkansas on Jan. 17.

“Dwight was obviously a contributor and role player for an NCAA Tournament team,” Self said. “He didn’t play a ton last year, but Ole Miss had good players. He’s hasn’t been playing ball forever, but there is definitely a foundation there, physically. Also, foundation from an intellect standpoint that is going to allow him to become a much better player fast. Without question, we think his best ball is well down the road. I see him being a Darnell Jackson. I see him being a bigger Jamari, a guy that can have a big impact on our program and hopefully mature and develop into a starter for us.”

As a freshman in 2013-14, Coleby started four of 28 games for Ole Miss and averaged 2.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 10.4 minutes per game.

Coleby went to Ole Miss after attending Piney Woods High School in Piney Woods, Mississippi. While there he averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots in 2012-13. Prior to Piney Woods, Coleby attended St. George’s High School in Freeport, Bahamas.

Larks rally to beat Colorado to win season opening series

The Hays Larks outhit the Colorado Sox 13-4, erasing an early 2-0 deficit for a 4-3 win Sunday night at Larks Park. The Larks take the season opening series 2-1 after a split in Saturday’s doubleheader. Colorado won the opener 5-4 and the Larks took the second game 6-0.

Colorado scored two in the first inning to take the early lead in Sunday’s game but Michael Burns (Wichita State) solo homer tied the game in the third. Hays took the lead in the fourth on Brett Anderson’s (Arkansas State) single, scoring Jordan Peterson (Easter Michigan). After the Sox tie it in the seventh, Michael Burns drove in the go-ahead run on a single.

Derek Birginske (Arkansas State) struck out five and walked only one over seven innings and picked up the win, giving up all three runs on four hits. Nebraska’s Nate Fisher pitched two perfect innings of relief for the save.

The 2-1 Larks are back at home Monday night for the first of a two-game series with the Denver Cougars. Free admission for the 7 pm game courtesy of Crawford Supply and Horizon Appliance and Electronics.

Ross hits winning single in 11th, Cubs beat Royals

By PATRICK ROSE
Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) – David Ross hit an RBI single with one out in the 11th inning Sunday, lifting the Chicago Cubs over the Kansas City Royals 2-1.

The Cubs and Royals split the abbreviated two-game series. Saturday’s game was rained out and will be made up at Wrigley Field during the last week of the regular season.

Ross delivered the fifth game-ending hit of his career, a bases-loaded single just beyond the reach of shortstop Alcides Escobar, who tried to make a sliding, over-the-shoulder catch.

Earlier in the inning, Dexter Fowler was thrown out at the plate by left fielder Alex Gordon when he tried to score on a single.

Zac Rosscup (2-1) struck out Salvador Perez with runners on first and third with two outs in the 11th.

Ryan Madson (0-1) walked Fowler to begin the 11th.

Cain hits tiebreaking double in 8th, Royals beat Cubs

By ANDREW SELIGMAN
AP Sports Writer

CHICAGO (AP) — Lorenzo Cain hit a tiebreaking RBI double and scored in a three-run eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 to snap a four-game losing streak on Friday.

Alcides Escobar homered on the game’s first pitch. Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez also went deep, and the Royals won after squandering a 4-1 lead.

Mike Moustakas walked leading off the eighth against Pedro Strop (1-3). Cain then drove him in with a double to the base of the wall in right-center and the Royals scored two more thanks to an error by center fielder Dexter Fowler.

He dropped Omar Infante’s liner trying to make a shoestring catch with runners on first and second, then fell trying to pick up the ball. Cain and Eric Hosmer scored, making it 7-4.

Kelvin Herrera (1-1) gave up a tying solo drive to Addison Russell in the seventh but picked up the win.

Hays Larks set to open new season Saturday

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Coming off a third-place finish at last year’s NBC World Series, the Hays Larks are set to embark on a new season Saturday night when they host the Colorado Sox in a six o’clock doubleheader at Larks Park. The two teams close out the series with a single game beginning at 6pm Sunday.

Manager Frank Leo discusses the Larks upcoming season

The Larks return nine players from last season’s 33-14 team that went 21-12 and finished second in the Jayhawk League. Among the returners are three players who garnered first team All-Jayhawk League honors in outfielder Michael Burns (Wichita State) who led the team with a .382 a batting average, utility player Derek Birginske (Arkansas State) who was second on the team with eight home runs and relief pitcher Blake Rogers (Oklahoma) who the Larks picked up for the NBC World Series from Liberal.

RELATED STORY: Special nights at Larks Park will honor vets, Little Leaguers.

The Larks play their first nine and 13 of their first 16 games at home including a key four-game Jayhawk League series with El Dorado next weekend.

For the first time under Frank Leo, who begins his 33rd season as manager, the Larks will carry a league maximum 28 players on the roster which he hopes will add depth to the pitching staff.

“We’ve recruited more arms this year for a couple of reasons” Leo said. Typically a guy’s going to be tender and may have to miss a start may have to miss a couple of appearances. The schedule is a little more demanding this year with the addition of two more league teams and it’s always great to have pitching depth.”

The Jayhawk League added the Bethany (OK) Bulls and Haysville (KS) Aviators in the off-season and will have two divisions. The two new teams join the Wellington Heat and Derby Twins in the South Division while the Larks, Dodge City, El Dorado and Liberal play in the North Division. Each team will play their own division opponents eight times while taking on the teams from the opposite division just three times. The two division winners will then meet at the end of the season in a best-of-three championship series.

The two division winners will get an automatic spot into the second week of the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Goodland state softball game postponed

TOPEKA — Due to poor weather and more rain in the forecast, Thursday’s 4A-Division II state softball game between Goodland and Meriden-Jeff West has been postponed until 3 p.m. Sunday.

The game will be streamed live via HaysPost.com.

A-Rod breaks Gehrig’s AL RBI record; Yanks sweep Royals

By MIKE FITZPATRICK
AP Baseball Writer

NEW YORK (AP) – Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run homer to break Lou Gehrig’s American League record for RBIs, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Wednesday to finish a three-game sweep.

Michael Pineda (6-2) rebounded from consecutive losses and Brian McCann hit a solo shot for the Yankees, who outscored the AL champions 23-4 in their first home sweep of at least three games against Kansas City since August 2007.

Coming into the series, New York had lost six in a row and 10 of 11.

Chris Young (4-1) gave up both Yankees home runs, and the slumping Royals have dropped four straight for the first time since Aug. 28-31. They’ve managed only five runs during the slide.
