Monarch baseball falls to Russell/Victoria in pitchers duel

Despite an outstanding pitching performance from Kameron Schmidt, the TMP-Marian baseball team loses their regional opener 2-0 to Russell/Victoria Thursday in Hoisington.

Schmidt allowed just the two runs on three hits while striking out six and walking four. Both of Russell’s runs were unearned. They scored a run off an error in the sixth to break break a scoreless tie then scored in insurance run in the seventh on a passed ball.

The Monarchs threatened in the sixth. Ricky Hockett opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but a strikeout and a line out to center ended the threat.

TMP-Marian ends their season at 16-5. Larned won the regional, beating the Broncos 6-4 in the finals.

Hays High baseball comes up short in regional opener

McPherson scored the go-ahead run on sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth and beat Hays High 4-3 in the semifinals of the Hays 4A Division I regional at the Hays High Field Thursday.

The Indians had rallied from an early 3-0 deficit with three in the top of the fifth to tie the game. They had runners at first and third with one out in the sixth but failed to score after a strikeout and groundout.

Cole Schumacher takes the loss, allowing all four runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking two.

The Indians end the season at 9-10. It’s their first losing season since 1988 and just their fourth under coach Frank Leo.

Hays High softball falls to McPherson in regional semifinal

McPherson scored 15 runs on 15 hits as they knock off Hays High softball team  15-5 in Andale 4A-DI regional opener.

Hays trailed 4-2 in the top of the third when the game was suspended due to rain on Tuesday. The Bullpups scored four in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth in the conclusion Thursday.

Hays put three on the board in the fifth.

Tessa Stickel, who hit two home runs on Tuesday finished with three hits to lead the Indian offense.

Madison Prough takes the loss, allowing all 15 runs on 15 hits as the Indians end their season at 5-16.

TMP softball ends season with loss to Larned

Despite a solid pitching performance the TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team could not overcome a rough day in the field and drop the regional semifinal with Larned 6-2 Thursday afternoon in Larned.

TMP starter Bailey Lacy did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and struck out 16 in seven inning but suffered the tough luck loss as Larned scored four unearned runs on three errors and two passed balls in the sixth inning to go up 6-1.

Laurel Hageman led off the fourth inning with a walk and courtesy runner Ciara Seib scored on a Heidi Gottschalk groundout, putting the Monarchs up 1-0.

Larned tied the game at 1 in the fifth and then added five more in the sixth to go up 6-1.

Seib scored for a second time as a courtesy runner for Hageman in the sixth to cut the Indians lead to 6-2 but the Monarchs were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Lacy allowed six runs, two earned, struck out 16 and walked two in the loss.

Lacy finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and Heidi Gottschalk was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs finish the season 10-11.

Guthrie throws 6 scoreless innings in Royals win over the Reds

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jeremy Guthrie pitched six shutout innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night.

The Royals tied a club record with 24 consecutive scoreless innings, which was set June 9-12, 1976. That streak ended in the seventh when Brandon Phillips’ two-out double off reliever Ryan Madson scored Zack Cozart.

The Royals, who won for the fifth time in six games, improved to 26-14, the franchise’s best record after 40 games.

Guthrie (4-2) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out predicament in the first inning and won his third straight start. He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out three. Guthrie retired 13 on fly balls and two on grounders.

Reds right-hander Jason Marquis (3-4) was pulled after 3 2-3 innings, yielding four runs, four hits, two sacrifice flies, two walks and a wild pitch. In losing his past three starts, Marquis has surrendered 21 hits and 15 runs in 12 1-3 innings for a 15.33 ERA.

Ventura, 2 relievers shut out Reds

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Yordano Ventura, Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis combined on a four-hitter and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Tuesday night.

The Royals, who beat the New York Yankees 6-0 on Sunday, logged consecutive shutouts for the first time since Sept. 29-30, 1992, when Dennis Rasmussen and Rick Reed blanked the California Angels.

Ventura (3-3), who was 0-3 in his five previous starts since a victory on April 12, allowed four singles, struck out six and walked none. He reached a three-ball count on only four hitters and retired all of them, lowering his ERA to 4.56.

Herrera gave up a walk in the eighth, but nothing else. Davis worked a spotless ninth, claiming his seventh save in as many opportunities.

Mike Moustakas went 3 for 4 with two doubles and drove in two runs. His double in the fifth scored Paulo Orlando, while his seventh-inning double brought home Omar Infante.

HHS girls soccer falls in regional opener

The Hays High girls soccer team scored first but Wichita-Trinity Academy scored four unanswered goals to beat the Indians 4-1 in their 4-1A South Central Regional contest Tuesday at Hays High School.

Sierra Brown scored the Indians lone goal in the first half as their season ends at 7-9-1.

Ellis softball loses to Sacred Heart in regional semifinals

The Ellis softball team saw their season come to an end Tuesday in a 16-1 run-rule loss to Salina-Sacred Heart in the semifinals of the Lincoln 2-1A Regional.

The Knights scored two in the first, four in the second, six in the third then four more in the fourth when the game was called by run-rule.

The Railers commit nine errors resulting in 13 unearned runs.

Skylar Gottschalk takes the loss, allowing 16 runs, three earned on 11 hits. Gottschalk walked three and struck out one. She also drove in the Railers only run.

Ellis ends their season at 9-11.

Chiefs sign 4 players, waive 3 others after rookie minicamp

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have signed four players from their rookie minicamp this past weekend and waived three other players to make room for them on their roster.

With a big need for depth on the offensive line, the Chiefs kept former Kansas center Daniel Munyer, South Alabama offensive guard Melvin Meggs and Baylor offensive tackle Kelvin Palmer.

The Chiefs also signed Sam Houston State running back Keshawn Hill.

To make room for them, the Chiefs waived offensive lineman Charles Sweeton along with fullback Manasseh Garner and tight end Earnest Pettway.

The Chiefs begin their optional full-squad workouts next week.

Lehman’s jersey will display in Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame ‘Ring of Honor’

The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn., announced that it will display Kate Lehman’s Fort Hays State jersey (No. 40) in its “Ring of Honor” for her accomplishments as a senior during the 2014-15 season.

Over 100 jerseys, which includes high school and college All-Americans, from the 2013-14 season are currently on display in an exhibit that changes annually. The Hall of Fame will borrow Lehman’s jersey for a year to display in honor of her numerous individual achievements for 2014-15. Lehman was the BennettRank.com Division II Player of the Year, the MIAA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the Daktronics Central Region Most Outstanding Player, and an All-America First Team selection by four organizations (WBCA, Daktronics, Division II Bulletin, and BennettRank.com).

Lehman averaged 19.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 4.2 blocked shots per game in 2014-15, helping the Tigers to a 30-4 record overall, the MIAA Regular Season Championship, and an appearance in the Central Regional Finals of the NCAA Tournament. She averaged 15.8 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 4.3 blocked shots per game in her four-year career at FHSU.

TMP regional baseball, softball games postponed

Thomas More Prep-Marian’s regional baseball game against Russell/Victoria in Hoisington has been postponed until 2 p.m. Wednesday due to weather.

The TMP regional softball game against Larned at Larned has been postponed until 4:15 p.m. Wednesday due to weather.

Hays High wins Holcomb golf regional; TMP second

Both the Hays High and TMP-Marian boys golf teams have qualified for next week’s 4A state tournament after finishing first and second at the Holcomb 4A Regional Monday at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City. The Indians shoot a 341 to win their third straight regional title by 11 strokes over the Monarchs.

Payton Ruder fired a 4-over-par 76 to win his second straight individual regional title. TMP-Marian’s Max Megaffin was secpmd with a 78. Hays High’s Allen Zollinger shot an 86 to finish fourth, Cash Hobson was ninth with an 89 and Nathan Romme 10th with a 90.

Hayden Rohr was the only other top-10 finisher for the Monarchs, coming in seventh with an 88.

Both teams advance to the 4A state tournament next Tuesday at the Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.
