Chiefs wrap up 3-day look at rookies in minicamp

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Mitch Morse would have been hard-pressed to find a better opportunity.

Start with the fact that the rookie offensive lineman was drafted by the Chiefs, just down the road from where he played in college. Throw in the fact that he was picked well before most experts anticipated – and what that meant for his first contract.

Then consider this: The Chiefs watched their starting center sign with the Oakland Raiders in free agency, leaving a gaping void in the middle of their offensive line.

Suddenly, the second-round draft pick could be counted on by a playoff contender.

Edinson Volquez dominates as Royals roll past Yankees

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Edinson Volquez threw three-hit ball for seven innings, Salvador Perez homered and drove in two runs and the Kansas City Royals rudely welcomed Chris Capuano back to the big leagues with a 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday.

The Royals got production from throughout their lineup to take the rubber game of their three-game set with the Yankees, whom they face again next week in New York.

Volquez (3-3) struck out five without issuing a walk in an effortless performance. He never allowed a leadoff man on base, and just one Yankee reached second all afternoon.

Capuano (0-1) made his season debut after rehabbing a quad strain that he sustained in spring training. The veteran left-hander gave up four runs on four hits and two walks, and left New York in a big hole when he was pulled four batters into the third inning.

The loss was the Yankees’ fifth in their last six games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lorenzo Cain had a career-high five RBIs, Kendrys Morales drove in three more runs and the Kansas City Royals routed the New York Yankees 12-1 on Friday night.

The Royals scored six times in the sixth inning while knocking Yankees starter Michael Pineda from the game, then cruised the rest of the way to open a three-game set between division leaders by dealing New York its season-high fourth consecutive loss.

Chris Young (3-0) allowed just four hits and two walks over 5 2-3 innings, making another strong case for a permanent spot in the starting rotation. The 6-foot-10 veteran made his third spot start in place of Jason Vargas, who is on the disabled list with a hip flexor injury.

Pineda (5-1), coming off a masterful 16-strikeout performance against Baltimore, only struck out one while matching a career worst with 10 hits.

NCAA hopes to make women’s college game more like pros

By DOUG FEINBERG
AP Basketball Writer

The NCAA women’s basketball rules committee is making the college game look more like the pros.

The committee came up with suggested changes Friday that include playing four 10-minute quarters instead of two halves, advancing the ball to the frontcourt in the final minute of game after a timeout and shooting two free throws after the fifth foul of each quarter. Those rules are already used in the WNBA.

The proposals will be evaluated on June 8 by a playing rules oversight panel. If they are passed they will be implemented starting next year.

The new rules would be used across all three divisions of women’s basketball.

NCAA committee calls for switch to 30-second shot clock

By JOHN MARSHALL
AP Basketball Writer

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee has recommended reducing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds among a series of changes aimed at speeding up a game that has reached historic lows in scoring.

The NCAA experimented with a 30-second shot clock during the NIT and CIT postseason tournaments and the rules committee recommended making it permanent for the 2015-16 season. The shot clock was last reduced for the 1993-94 season, from 45 to 35 seconds.

Scoring in college basketball hit an all-time low in 2012-13 and nearly matched it last season, when teams scored 67.6 points per game.

The committee also recommended extending the restricted arc from three to four feet to reduce the number of collisions under the basket. Teams also would have one less second-half timeout.

Monarch baseball wins three to extend win streak

The TMP-Marian baseball team ends their regular season on a six-game win streak after defeating Goodland 12-7 in the completion of a rainout from last week then sweeping Colby 6-0 and 10-6. The Monarchs have won nine of their last 10 games to finish the regular season 16-4.

Ryan Ruder and Ryan Schippers both had three hits against Goodland. Ruder drove in three and scored twice. Schippers tripled and also scored two runs. Ricky Hockett allowed one run on six hits over four innings for the win. Hockett struck out six and walked none.

Kameron Schmidt threw a the complete game shutout in the opener against Colby, holding the Eagles to five hits while striking out five and walking none. Ricky Hockett drove in two while Schmidt, Justin Pfeifer and Jared Vitztum all had two hits.

Liam Stults pitched five innings in the second game with the Eagles and picks up the win. He struck out four and walked four. Braiden Werth drove in three.

The Monarchs will now play Russell/Victoria at two o’clock Tuesday in Hoisington in their regional opener.

Big day for Shoendaller helps HHS softball to sweep of Liberal

The Hays High softball team closed out the regular season with a pair of run-rule wins in Liberal Thursday. The Indians win 18-0 and 24-0 to finish the regular season at 5-15.

A big day for Kaylie Schoendaller who went 5-for-7 in the two games with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Schoendaller hit a solo homer in the first game then added a grand slam in the second and scored six runs.

Schoendaller now has hit 26 home runs in her career which is second most in Kansas history behind Bishop Carroll’s Brittany Finney (32). Both moved past the old mark of 24 held by former TMP-Marian and Fort Hays State standout Maddie Holub.
