HHS, TMP girls soccer both pick up wins

The Hays High girls soccer team built a 3-0 halftime lead on goals from CJ Norris, Maddie Keller and Tressa Beckerand went on to defeat Liberal 4-1 Thursday in Liberal. The Indians scored their first two goals on headers. Brooke Russell scored in the second half. The only Redskin goal came on a penalty kick. HHS improves to 3-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The TMP-Marian girls soccer team moved to 6-2 with a 3-0 victory over Great Bend Thursday. The Indians and Monarchs will face off against each other next Thursday at Hays High School.

Tien breaks FHSU pole vault record; Tiger men win three events at ESU

Fort Hays State men’s track and field competed at the Emporia State Mid-Week Open on Wednesday (Apr. 22) in Emporia, Kan. Brady Tien broke the 34-year old outdoor pole vault record at FHSU with an automatic qualifying mark in a winning effort. The FHSU men won three other events and posted one provisional mark.

Tien became the first Tiger in history to reach the 17-foot mark in pole vault (indoor or outdoor), clearing exactly that height to win in a field of 12 competitors. It broke the old FHSU outdoor record of 16-feet, 10-inches cleared by Kim Stewart in 1981. Tien’s effort tied the second best in NCAA Division II this outdoor season and gained him an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. The mark also broke the meet record.

The Tigers were victorious in the 800 meters, 5,000 meters, and 4×100-meter relay, setting meet records in all three events. Michael Kinuthia topped a field of 20 athletes in the 800 with a time of 1:53.34. Seth Parres won the 5,000 in a time of 15:23.86. The 4×100-meter relay team of Nate Simpson, Dillando Allotey, CJ Wilson, and Rodrigo Alves won with a time of 41.68 seconds.

Brenner Wells gained a provisional mark in the men’s javelin. He finished third in the event, but threw 205-feet, 11.25-inches. That puts him 16th on the national performance list this year.

Alves and Allotey turned in top-three finishes in the sprints. Alves finished second in the 100 meters in 10.95 seconds, while Allotey was third in the 200 meters in 22.22 seconds. Ryan Hopkins finished third in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:02.59. Jacob Thomas finished second in the 5,000 meters in 15:30.13. Jordan Carroll was second in the triple jump with a distance of 47-feet, 0.75-inches.

FHSU women’s track wins two events at ESU Mid-Week

Fort Hays State women’s track and field had several athletes compete in the Emporia State Mid-Week Open, held on Wednesday (Apr. 22) in Emporia, Kan. Carman Hill won the 800-meter run and Mindy Wilson won the 400-meter hurdles, while Danielle Berry improved her provisional mark in the high jump.

Hill topped a field of 25 competitors in the 800 meters, running a time of 2:22.80. Wilson won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.81, topping 15 runners in the event.

Berry finished second among 17 athletes competing in the high jump. Her height of 5-feet, 7.25-inches bumped her up to 11th on the national performance list.

The FHSU women had five other second-place finishes respectfully, including Lexi Riedel in the 200 meters (25.80 seconds), Kelly Wycoff in the 400 meters (58.78 seconds), the 4×100-meter relay team (48.64 seconds), the 4×400-meter relay team (4:06.06), and Shannon Toll in the javelin (128-feet, 3.25-inches). Scout Wiebe finished third in the javelin (128-feet).

Tigers shut out in loss to Washburn

Fort Hays State fell to Washburn in a single non-conference contest on Wednesday night (Apr. 22) in Topeka, Kan. The Ichabods posted a 13-0 shutout over the Tigers by run-rule in seven innings.

Fort Hays State (15-28) had nine reach base and eight were left on as they could not scratch out a run against three Washburn pitchers. Ichabod starter Zach Linquist went five innings and allowed just three hits and struck out four. Hank Wellborn allowed one hit in his inning of work, and Spencer Schwandt also allowed one hit in an inning of work. Linquist moved to 3-3 on the year for the Ichabods.

Washburn (27-17) did all of its scoring damage in the first through fifth innings. The Ichabods plated three in the first, two in the second, four in the third, and two in both the fourth and fifth.

Alex Cox took the loss for FHSU. He went 2.0 innings in his start, allowing five runs on four hits with a strikeout. Trevor Rinne allowed four runs in 0.2 innings of work. Will Amen allowed three runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings, recording one strikeout. Clayton Basgall went 2.0 innings and allowed one unearned run.

The Tigers now turn their focus to a four-game conference series this weekend to end the regular season at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. The teams will play the series Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

FHSU women 8th at MIAA Golf Championships

Fort Hays State women’s golf closed out the 2014-15 season at the MIAA Championships at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The Tigers finished eighth as a team and Samantha Hobson led the way for FHSU individually.

Hobson tied for 29th individually, shooting a total of 267. She had rounds of 97, 81, and 89. Megan DeWerff and Quillen Eichhorn tied for 40th. DeWerff shot rounds of 93, 92, and 93, while Eichhorn shot rounds of 94, 94, and 90. Abby Schmidtberger was 44th with rounds of 94, 93, and 97, while Hadley Tharp tied for 45th with rounds of 98, 94, and 107.

Marla Souvannasing of Central Oklahoma won the tournament with a total of 228. Central Oklahoma won the tournament as a team shooting a total of 934. Lindenwood was second with 966 and Northeastern State was third with 970.

Herman Earns All-MIAA Honors; Tigers 11th at MIAA Championships

Fort Hays State’s Trey Herman earned All-MIAA honors for his play throughout the season in MIAA events and the Tigers finished 11th as a team at the MIAA Championships at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. Herman led the Tigers by tying for sixth in the tournament.

Herman earned All-MIAA honors for the second straight year as he finished 10th in the individual point standings, accumulating 18.5 points over the four MIAA events throughout the season. Herman led the Tigers at the MIAA Championships by tying for sixth place.

Herman backed up a first-round 78 by shooting 75 in the next two rounds. His total of 228 was seven strokes back of individual medalist Eric Kline of Central Oklahoma, who won a playoff against MIAA Player of the Year Travis Mays of Central Missouri.

Dylan Wonnacott finished in a tie for 36th, shooting rounds of 88, 80, and 78. Grant Storey was 51st with rounds of 102, 75, and 83. Kade Megaffin was one place behind Storey with rounds of 91, 84, and 87. Billy Frey tied for 53rd with two rounds of 91 and an 89.

The Tigers shot 985 as a team. Central Missouri won the tournament with 897. Central Oklahoma was second with 924 and Lindenwood was third with 943.

Hays Basketball School scheduled for next month

The Hays Basketball School will be May 26 to 28 at the Hays Recreation Commission, 1105 Canterbury.

The basketball camp will be 8 to 10 a.m. for boys entering grades 6 to 8; 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for boys entering grades 2 to 5; and 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. for those entering grades 9 to 12.

“This camp is designed to give your son a chance to improve his fundamental skills of basketball,” said camp director and Hays High School basketball coach Rick Keltner. “We will also stress the importance of things beyond basketball, such as the importance of team play and attitude.”

HHS baseball pushes win streak to four

The Hays High baseball team is on a four-game win streak after sweeping Garden City 5-4 and 13-10 Tuesday in Garden City. The Indians are now 5-5 on the season. They are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Great Bend.

Tathan Burkhart scored on an error with two outs in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie as the Indians take the opener 5-4. Dalton Stout pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.

In the second game, Hays scored seven in the third and four in the sixth and win 13-10. Connor Rule and Dalton Stout both had three of the Indians 14 hits. Rule homered and drove in three. Stout added a pair of doubles, driving in one. Jarrett Pfannenstiel doubled twice and knocked in three. Tathan Burkhart picks up the win despite allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings.

FHSU softball splits with Northwestern Oklahoma State

The Fort Hays State softball team split with Northwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday in Alva, losing the opener 2-0 then winning the second game 6-5.

The Tigers put seven runners on in the first game but failed to get a hit. FHSU had runners at first and third with no outs in the seventh but three straight strikeouts ended the game. Paxton Duran took the loss, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out two and walking two.

Fort Hays State led 6-0 in the second game but had to hold on as the Rangers rally for five in the seventh. Tori Beltz hit two, two-run homers. Kelsey Kimminau picks up the win, striking out six and walking two. The

Tigers (24-23) look to secure spot in the MIAA tournament when they host Nebraska-Kearney Friday.

Monarch baseball picks up two more wins

The TMP-Marian baseball team picked up a pair of wins Tuesday, beating Scott City 12-1 in five innings then knocked off Great Bend 6-3.

The Monarchs score four in the second, four in the third and three in fifth for their second win in five days over the Beavers. Jared Vitztum picks up the win, walking one and striking out one over three innings. Liam Stults led the offense going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

In the second game against Great Bend, TMP broke a 2-2 tie with four in the fourth. Ryan Schippers and Justin Pfeifer both had RBI singles in the inning.

Liam Stults picks up the win, allowing the three runs on three hits with six walks and six strikeouts.

The Monarchs improve to 9-3 on the season. They host Goodland Friday.

Bollig no-hitter leads Ellis baseball to sweep of Sylvan

Brandon Bollig threw a no-hitter helping the Ellis baseball team to a sweep of Sylvan on Tuesday. The Railers win the first game 7-3 then take the second contest 11-0 in five innings.

Ellis scored four runs in the fifth inning to go up 6-0 in the first game then did all of their scoring in the first three innings of the second game.

Bollig struck out 10 and walked just one to move to 3-2.

Ellis improves to 7-3 on the season.

HHS softball sweeps Colby

The Hays High softball team picked up a pair of 11-9 wins over Colby Tuesday. The Indians scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to go up 11-7 in the first game, then held on as the Eagles scored two in the seventh.

Kaylie Schoendaller went 4-for-4. Nicole Dinkel added a three-run homer helping Madison Prough to the win. Prough gave up 12 hits, striking out five and walking five.

Hays led 10-4 after four innings in the second game. The Eagles pulled within a run before Tessa Stickel hit a solo homer in the seventh, her second of the game.

Erika Arnhold gets the complete game victory, striking out five and walking two.

The Indians improve to 3-9 on the season. The host Great Bend next Tuesday.

Ellis softball sweeps Lincoln

The Ellis softball team scored 35 runs on 13 hits and sweeps Lincoln 17-2 in four innings and 18-8 in five innings Tuesday, snapping a six-game losing streak.

The Railers blew open the first game with a 10-run fourth inning. skylar Gottschalk pics up the win, allowing two runs on two hits. Aspen Younger homered.

Ellis took control of game two early, scoring 12 runs in the first. Brittany Bollig struck out seven while walking just one for the win. She also had two hits and three RBIs at the plate.
