K-State trying to answer QB question headed into spring game

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – The race to replace one of the most prolific passers in Kansas State history may boil down to a junior who never started at game at quarterback in high school and a sophomore who was born more than six years after Bill Snyder took over the program.

Joe Hubener was the primary backup to Jake Waters last season, a former walk-on who played wide receiver and defensive back in high school. But based on his experience in 2014, he may have the slight edge for the No. 1 spot heading into Saturday’s spring game.

Jesse Ertz is the relative newcomer. He threw for more than 7,300 yards as a prep player in Iowa, breaking the state’s career record with 98 touchdown passes.

Royals’ Herrera suspended, Ventura fined for incident vs A’s

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Major League Baseball suspended Kansas City’s Kelvin Herrera for five games and fined him and fellow pitcher Yordano Ventura after both targeted Brett Lawrie during a testy series against Oakland over the weekend.

Herrera was tossed in the eighth inning of Sunday’s game after throwing behind Lawrie. Ventura was ejected from Saturday’s game when he hit Lawrie with a pitch after Josh Reddick’s home run.

Both incidents came after Lawrie’s hard slide into Alcides Escobar injured the left knee of the Kansas City shortstop on Friday and caused benches to clear. Escobar called it a “dirty slide” and did not play Saturday or Sunday.

MLB did not disclose the amounts of the fines. Herrera can appeal his suspension or it can take effect beginning Tuesday night against Minnesota.

Volquez leads Royals to win over Twins

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Edinson Volquez dodged trouble for seven innings, and the Kansas City Royals scored a pair of runs on wild pitches before pounding the bumbling Minnesota Twins, 7-1 on Monday night.

Alcides Escobar returned from a sprained knee to score a run, and Kendrys Morales and Paulo Orlando drove in a pair each as the Royals finally figured out Twins nemesis Kyle Gibson.

The right-hander gave up four runs in five-plus innings. Gibson (1-2) had earned the win in his first four starts against Kansas City, including a dominant performance in a 3-1 victory last week at Target Field.

Volquez (2-1) was more than his match Monday night at Kauffman Stadium. He allowed five hits while striking out five with only one walk, wiggling out of jams whenever he got into them.

The Royals’ defense, featuring three Gold Glove winners, sure helped him out.

Schneider named new KU women’s basketball coach

Kansas Athletics

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Brandon Schneider, who has led Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball to the 2014 and 2015 Southland Conference regular-season titles, has been named head women’s basketball coach at the University of Kansas.

Schneider will be formally announced at a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, April 21 at 10 a.m., in the Allen Fieldhouse media room.

In five seasons at SFA, Schneider’s teams have won 95 games and reached postseason play three times, including an appearance in the championship game of the 2014 Women’s Basketball Invitational.

Before going to SFA, Schneider won 306 games and the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship at Emporia State University in Kansas. He led the Lady Hornets to 11 NCAA tournament appearances in his 12 seasons in Emporia, winning 81 percent of his games there. In addition to the 2010 NCAA Championship, his Lady Hornets reached the Division II Final Four in 1999, two Elite Eights (2000 and 2006) and three Sweet 16’s (2001, 2005, 2008).

Schneider is a 1995 graduate of Wayland Baptist University and was a four-year letterman in basketball. He came to coaching naturally: His father, Bob, won more than 1,000 women’s basketball games in a coaching career that spanned 43 years, and coached West Texas A&M to the NCAA Division II Championship game in 1988.

“Brandon is an excellent fit for the University of Kansas,” said KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger. “He is an exceptional teacher, and someone who has spent his entire career in Kansas and Texas. He is known as a terrific recruiter and a firm, knowledgeable coach. And we know he has coaching in his blood, having watched his dad have so much success for so many years. We are confident that Brandon’s teams at KU will display the same tenacity and competitiveness that his teams have shown at Emporia State and Stephen F. Austin.”

Schneider and his wife, Ali, have two sons, Cash and Cole.

Schlaefli signs with FHSU for Track and Field

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Sometimes it takes one good year to make everybody take notice. In the spring of 2014, that is exactly what Mattie Schlaefli did in javelin. A year ago she placed second in the 5A State Javelin Throw, uncorking a throw of 128′-11″. It wasn’t her best throw of the year, having thrown 130′-9″ earlier in the year, just three inches short of the Western Athletic Conference meet record. All of that was enough to put collegiate coaches on alert of her ability. On Monday the senior signed her National Letter of Intent to compete at Fort Hays State University.

Mattie Schlaefli

The Tigers are well known in NCAA D-II for their javelin throwers. Current FHSU freshman Estefania Lopez has the best throw in the nation by over nine feet. Sophomore Madison Wolf is third in the nation, trailing second place by two inches. And sophomore Megan Honas currently ranks 13th in the nation.

Coach Kirk Maska

Schlaefli has only thrown in one meet this season after suffering an ankle injury in the next to last regular season game of basketball season. Her event coach Kirk Maska said he expects Mattie to be back to the 130′ mark or better by the regional and state competition, now that she has been cleared to participate again.

Royals overcome 5 ejections to beat Athletics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals overcame five ejections to beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 Sunday behind Kendrys Morales’ tiebreaking two-run double in a three-run eighth inning.

After the warning was issued Sunday, Yost came out to argue and was immediately ejected by Gibson.

In the eighth inning, Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera was ejected after throwing behind Brett Lawrie. Bench coach Don Wakamatsu, who was acting as manager after Yost’s ejection, also ejected during the argument along with injured Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar.
