Reddick’s 3-run homer sends A’s victory over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Josh Reddick hit a three-run homer, Jesse Hahn and Jesse Chavez combined for a seven-hitter, and the Oakland Athletics rolled to a 5-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Yordano Ventura (2-1) gave up all five runs in the fourth inning, right before hitting A’s third baseman Brett Lawrie with what appeared to be a retaliatory pitch for an incident the previous night.

Stephen Vogt and former Royals designated hitter Billy Butler each drove in a run for Oakland, and Hahn (1-1) scattered three hits and a walk over 5 1-3 innings before leaving with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

Chavez then picked him up with 3 2-3 innings for the save, completing the fifth shutout by Oakland in its first 12 games.

Hornets take first game of series with FHSU

Emporia State starter Travis Hendry improved to 8-1 allowing just two runs runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings as the Hornets take game one of their four game series with the Fort Hays State Tigers 4-2 at Larks Park Saturday afternoon. Closer Shawn Talkington recorded the final five outs including a 1-2-3 seventh for his seventh save.

The Tigers only runs came on solo home runs from Nick Hammeke and Kevin Czarnecki. Starting pitcher Tiger starter Gabe Cook (1-3) went the distance, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Just one pitch was thrown in the second game before rain suspended play. That game will resume at 1pm Sunday with a second seven-inning game to follow. The series will wrap up with a single game at a yet to be determined time Monday.

Royals put closer Holland on 15-day DL with pectoral strain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have put closer Greg Holland on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right pectoral muscle.

The Royals made the move before Saturday night’s game against Oakland.

Holland has four saves this season and has not allowed a hit in four scoreless innings. He has been an All-Star the last two years.

Holland had 46 saves last year in the regular season, then earned seven more in the postseason for the AL champions.

The Royals recalled right-hander Yohan Pino from Triple-A Omaha. He pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed one hit with no walks and six strikeouts last Sunday at New Orleans.

The 31-year-old Pino was 2-5 with a 5.07 ERA in 11 starts last season with the Minnesota Twins.

FHSU wraps up spring practice with Spring Game

The Fort Hays State football team wrapped up their spring drills with the annual Spring Game Saturday morning at Lewis Field. The Tigers ran 60 plays in a controlled scrimmage which did not include full tackling.

Returning quarterback Treveon Albert led the offense with a 40 yard touchdown pass to Garrett Holle on the first possession. Albert scrambled for 14 yards to keep their third possession alive. He connected with Tyler Bacon on a 21 yard pass to set up his seven-yard TD run. Albert also had a 17 yard completion to Holle which set up a Drew O’Brien field goal later in the scrimmage.

Freshman John Wilson picked off a Jacob Mezera pass near mid field and returned it for a touchdown to highlight the defense which had several starters from last year out.

The Tigers were without several returning starters on both sides of the ball. Offensive lineman Matt Erbert sat out the entire spring due to semesters. Wide receiver Isaiah Maxi was also out recovering from injury. The offense was also without quarterback Kevin Spain (hand) and running back Kenneth Iheme (leg) due to injuries suffered during practice. Junior offensive lineman Jarred Stindt and transfer running back TJ Thomas both went down with knee injuries during the scrimmage.

Defensive lineman Johnny Hubbard and Noah Debben were also held out due to injury and Daniel Lindsey did not practice this spring.

Royals beat Athletics in rematch of AL wild-card game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals and A’s picked up right where they left off.

In their first meeting since last September’s dramatic wild-card game, Paulo Orlando delivered a go-ahead triple in the eighth inning Friday night to help Kansas City to a 6-4 win over Oakland in another back-and-forth affair.

Omar Infante also drove in a pair of runs for the Royals, whose 12-inning victory over the Athletics last year ultimately spurred them all the way to Game 7 of the World Series.

Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis (2-0) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of the Royals’ Jeremy Guthrie, and Greg Holland breezed through the ninth for his fourth save.

Dan Otero (0-1) gave up both runs in the eighth inning for Oakland.

HHS baseball sweeps Russell/Victoria

The Hays High baseball used a couple of big innings to sweep Russell/Victoria 12-2 and 10-2 Friday at the Hays High Field. The Indians improve to 3-5 with the wins.

HHS scored five in the first and three in the second in the opener then added three more in the fifth. Cole Schumacher picked up the complete game victory, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one. Dalton Stout went 2-for-2 and drove in three.

Jarett Pfannenstiel picked up a five inning complete game victory in game two, striking out four and walking one while giving up just three hits. The Indians score eight in the fifth to blow open a one-run game. Brayden Delzeit and Tathan Burkhart both drove in two.

TMP-Marian softball sweeps Ellis

The TMP-Marian softball team picked up a couple of wins over Ellis Friday at the TMP Field to even their record at 6-6. The Monarchs sored six in the fourth, then after Ellis struck for five in the sixth, they tack on five in the sixth for an 11-4 win in game one. TMP jumped out early, scoring four in the first inning of the second game and wins it 8-4.

Alison Helget picked up the complete game victory in game one, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out eight and walking two. Bailey Lacy went 2-for-4 at the plate including a three-run homer in the sixth and drove in four.

Lady picked up the complete game victory in the second contest, striking out 10 while walking three. She was also 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in three.

Indians’ Russell will play soccer for Barton

Hays High senior Brooke Russell new at an early age she wanted to play soccer on the collegiate level. When Barton County Community College came calling it was too good to pass up. Russell chose Barton not only because of her want to play soccer, but also because she can work toward her major in ag-business.

Indian’s soccer coach Jim Maska has seen Russell play since she was eight years old, and it was no surprise that she worked her way into a college scholarship. Maska also said that Russell has really taken a bigger leadership role on a young Indian’s soccer team that is in midst of their spring season, crediting her with the marked improvement he has seen in the team over the past couple of games.

FHSU changes weekend baseball schedule

Fort Hays State Baseball’s final home series of the season has been moved to just Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 18-19) due to the forecasted weather in Hays this weekend.

The teams will now play two doubleheaders. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 2 pm, while Sunday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 pm.

Twins power their way past Royals

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Kennys Vargas and Kurt Suzuki each hit a two-run homer, powering the Minnesota Twins past the Kansas City Royals 8-5 Thursday for their first series win this season.

Tommy Milone (2-0) picked up his second straight victory for the Twins, recovering from a rough start to log 5 1-3 innings.

Lorenzo Cain put the Royals in front with his two-run shot in the first inning, but starter Jason Vargas (1-1) was shelled. He gave up 10 hits and a walk, failing to get an out in the fourth and leaving with a 5-3 deficit.

Kansas guard Greene has hip surgery

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas guard Brannen Greene had surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his hip, and the extensive recovery will cause him to miss the World University Games in July.

The Jayhawks are serving as Team USA for the tournament in Gwangju, South Korea.

Greene’s surgery was performed by Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd in Nashville, Tennessee. Greene will be on crutches for about eight weeks and will not return to the court for about five months.

That still puts him on pace to be ready for his junior season.

Greene started two of 35 games for Kansas last season, averaging 5.7 points. He shot 40.4 percent from beyond the arc, and went 5 for 5 from 3-point range while scoring a career-best 19 points in a 75-70 victory at Georgetown in December.

Royals suffer first loss of the season

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Kansas City became the last team in the majors to lose this season, as Kyle Gibson pitched into the seventh inning and Oswaldo Arcia hit a two-run homer for the Minnesota Twins in a 3-1 victory over the Royals on Wednesday night.

The Royals (7-1) were chasing the 2003 team’s 9-0 start as the best in franchise history, but Gibson (1-1) used 12 groundball outs and three strikeouts to keep the highest-scoring team in the majors quiet for a night.

The Twins (2-6) went 1-8 to begin the 1994 season, the only other time in the club’s 55-year history they started with seven losses in their first eight games. Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.

Edinson Volquez (1-1) struck out seven in 7 2-3 innings, with five hits and one walk allowed. He loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but he escaped with only Brian Dozier’s sacrifice fly as the damage.

FHSU comeback falls short against Newman

The Fort Hays State baseball team committed two errors in the sixth inning resulting in five unearned runs and fall 10-9 to Newman Wednesday at Larks Park.

The Tigers took advantage of two Jet errors to score three in the fifth and grab a 5-2 lead on a Kevin Czarnecki two-run homer, but Newman answered with seven in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead.

Fort Hays State loaded the bases to start the ninth and scored three runs but pinch hitter Casey Sedbrook struck looking with the bases loaded to end the comeback.

Kyle Vogt takes the loss in relief despite not allowing an earned run in two innings. Starter Brad Spires gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 this over five innings.

The Tigers fall to 14-24. They play their final four home games of the season this weekend against Emporia State beginning Friday night at 7 pm at Larks Park.
