Game 1:  TMP 16, Plainville 1 (3 innings)
Game 2: TMP 14, Plainville 4 (6 innings)

The TMP Lady Monarchs used an 8 run first inning to put away the visiting Plainville Lady Cardinals early in game one of a double header at TMP Field.  The Lady Monarchs scored four more in the second inning and capped off the run rule victory with a four run third inning.  TMP only collected four hits in the blowout win.  Two came from freshman Bailey Lacy, one from Jodi Veach, and Katelyn Zimmerman doubled in the third.  Plainville pitching struggled hitting five batters and walking another five.  Alison Helgut gave up only one hit and one run for the victory.

Kansas’ Cliff Alexander headed to NBA draft

By AMIE JUST
Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas forward Cliff Alexander said Tuesday he is foregoing his three remaining years of eligibility and will enter the NBA draft.

“I talked this over with my mom and dad and we decided the timing was right for me to enter the NBA draft,” Alexander said in a statement. “Kansas has been a great experience.”

On Feb. 28, Alexander was forced to miss the final few weeks of the season due to an investigation into improper benefits.

“This should come as no surprise to anybody,” Kansas coach Bill Self said in a statement. “Cliff had a very interesting and educational year. He was a major contributor to our team from the beginning of the season.

“He worked his way into the starting lineup and has had to deal with an off-the-court issue with the NCAA that made him ineligible for the last eight games of our season.”

Alexander averaged 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Jayhawks, who finished 27-9 and lost to Wichita State in the NCAA Tournament.

Opening Day rout for the Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Yordano Ventura pitched six solid innings before leaving with a thumb cramp, and Alex Rios had a three-run homer among his three hits as the AL champion Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 10-1 on Monday.

Ventura was replaced by Kelvin Herrera in the seventh after crumpling to the ground following a strike to Adam LaRoche. The preliminary report was a right thumb cramp. Ventura will be evaluated later this week, but Royals trainers said it is not believed to be serious.

Rios, who was making his Kansas City debut, homered in a five-run seventh with Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon aboard. Gordon stroked a two-run single in the inning.

Jose Abreu homered in the seventh for the White Sox.

KU’s Jo Jo White to be inducted into Naismith Hall of Fame

Kansas Athletics

INDIANAPOLIS – Two-time Kansas men’s basketball All-American and seven-time NBA All-Star Jo Jo White joined the best of the best among his life’s work on Monday. White was one of six individuals announced as making up the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s class of 2015.

White donned the Crimson and Blue from 1966-69 under the direction of head coach Ted Owens. An All-America selection in 1968 and 1969, White was a three-time All-Big Eight Conference honoree and KU’s Most Valuable Player for three-straight seasons. The Saint Louis native scored 1,286 career points, which still ranks 29th all-time at Kansas.

His four years at KU saw the Jayhawks win two Big Eight Championships, three Big Eight Holiday Tournaments, make two NCAA Tournament appearances and finish runner-up in the NIT. He was a member of the 1968 Gold Medal USA Olympic basketball team and played 11 seasons in the NBA.

Drafted by Boston with the ninth overall pick in 1969, White led the Celtics to NBA Championships in 1974 and 1976, where in the latter he was named NBA Finals MVP. A seven-time NBA All-Star, he averaged 18.3 points per game in his 10-year Celtics career, shooting 42.2 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the free throw line, while he averaged 21.5 points per game in 80 playoff games.

A major impact at the collegiate and professional levels, White’s No. 10 was retired by the Celtics in 1982, one of 21 numbers that hang in the TD Garden rafters. His Kansas jersey was officially retired on Jan. 27, 2003.

The electees will be enshrined during Hall of Fame weekend, Sept. 10-11, at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Along with White, fellow former NBA players Dikembe Mutombo and Spencer Haywood also were voted in, as was longtime referee Dick Bavetta, college and NBA coach John Calipari, and WNBA legend Lisa Leslie.

White marks the 18th Jayhawk all-time to be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is named in honor of the game’s inventor and KU’s first head coach, Dr. James Naismith.

FHSU Athletics

Estafania Lopez shattered the FHSU women’s javelin record on Saturday at the ESU Relays in Emporia, Kan. Lopez posted the nation’s best mark in the event so far, throwing 169’7.25″. She helped the Tigers to a fifth-place finish at the meet.

Lopez topped the school’s previous “new model” javelin record of 160’9″ set by Makayla McPhail in 2012. Teammate Madison Wolf had thrown the second-best effort in the nation last week at the Alex Francis Classic in Hays at 160’3″, but Lopez moved into the top spot nationally by over nine feet. Wolf finished third in the event on Saturday with a throw of 145’11.5″, while Megan Honas was fourth with a throw of 143’6.75″ to move up the national provisional mark list.

FHSU won three other events at the meet. Danille Berry posted a provisional qualifying mark in the high jump, winning with a height of 5’7″. That ties the seventh-best effort nationally so far. Alex Keehn won the 5,000 meters in a time of 18:49.53 to top a field of six runners. The 4×800-meter relay team won in a time of 10:18.25.

The Tigers scored 83 points as a team to finish fifth out of 14 teams. Missouri-Kansas City won the meet with 181 points, while Central Missouri was second at 124.5 points.

The majority of the track team was in action at the ESU Relays in Emporia, Kan., where the Tigers took sixth as a team.

Keehn ran a time of 29:44.68 in the event to finish second and post a solid provisional qualifying mark. He was just three seconds off the pace of unattached runner Andreas Ahwall. Keehn topped two other runners that ran sub-30:00, Blake Taneff of Ohio State and Aaron Mora of Chico State. Teammate Jonny Burnansky finished 16th in the event in 30:30.08, also obtaining a provisional mark. Michael Kinuthia was just three-tenths of a second short of getting a provisional in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:52.35.

Fort Hays State generated 57 points as a team at the ESU Relays in Emporia, Kan., finishing sixth out of 12 teams. FHSU did not have any top three finishers individually, but had one fourth-place and three fifth-place finishers. The 4×800-meter relay team finished third.
