Lady Indians Season Comes To Close With Loss

By Dustin Armbruster

Buhler 57 – Hays 23

The Hays High Lady Indians were visitors in their own gym on Friday night for the first round of sub-state. Hays was the three seed in the tournament taking on #8 Buhler, the two seed.

Each of the Lady Indians first four shots could have given Hays an early lead, but Hays missed on each attempt. Buhler didn’t score until two minutes into the game, but those two free throws ignited a 19-0 run to give the Crusaders all the room they would need. Hays fell behind 21-4 after the first quarter and 33-8 at half tim.

Highlights

Buhler never let up in the second half going on a 10-1 run to open third quarter. Hays trailed 57-14 after three quarter. The fourth quarter was a continuous clock and Hays held Buhler scoreless at 9-0, losing 57-23.

The Hays Indian’s close the year out at 6-15. #8 Buhler is 16-5 and will play #4 McPherson for the sub-state championship.

TMP boys roll by Colby

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

TMP 65, Colby 23

TMP made short work of Colby on Thursday night at the Colby Community Building in the semi-finals of the Colby 4A-Division II Sub-State.  The Monarchs started the game on an 11 to nothing run, all by junior Jared Vitztum, in the first three minutes of the game and were in control the rest of the way.  Colby would score the next four points to pull the game within seven points but TMP would close the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 21-6 lead.

The second quarter wasn’t much better for the Eagles.  TMP outscored Colby 24-5 to take a 45-11 halftime lead.  The Monarchs were able to extend the lead to 60-16 at the end of the third quarter.  A running clock the entire fourth quarter eased the pain for Colby.  TMP picked up the their 15th win on the season, 65-23.  Colby finishes the season at 0-20.

Vitztum led the way for the Monarchs with 16 points, Kameron Schmidt added 10 and Ryan Ruder came off the bench to score nine. TMP will face Concordia at 7:30 Saturday night for the sub-state championship and the right to play in the state tournament in Park City.  The Panthers won easily over Goodland on Thursday, 69-40.

Tiger women remain atop region rankings

FHSU Sports Information

No. 4 Fort Hays State was listed as the top ranked team for the third consecutive week in the NCAA Central Region Rankings, released Wednesday (Feb. 25). The Tigers have been first in every version of the poll, released weekly leading up the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, held March 8. The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA Regionals, held March 13-15 at a site to be determined.

The Central Region is made up of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and the Great American Conference (GAC). Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the postseason conference tournaments, with the final five seeds handed out on an at-large basis. Northern State has already locked up an automatic bid after winning the NSIC Tournament this week.

The Tigers (26-2, 18-1 MIAA) are 22-2 against NCAA Division II teams on the year – with all matchups coming against regional opponents. FHSU is one of five MIAA teams listed in the rankings, joining Emporia State (No. 2), Pittsburg State (No. 3), Central Missouri (No. 9) and Missouri Southern (No. 10). Three teams from the NSIC are listed in the poll, with Wayne State (No. 4), Northern State (No. 7) and Minnesota State-Mankato (No. 8) representing the conference. Harding (No. 5) and Arkansas Tech (No. 6) are the GAC teams listed in the rankings.

This week’s poll saw minimal changes and no new teams mentioned. Emporia State and Pittsburg State flipped the second and third overall spots, while Arkansas Tech and Northern State swapped the sixth and seventh positions.

Fort Hays State won the MIAA Regular Season Championship outright this season and is the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament, which began Tuesday (March 3) at home sites. FHSU earned an automatic bye into the quarterfinals and begins tournament play this Friday (March 6) against ninth-seeded Northeastern State. Game time from Municipal Auditorium is 12 pm.

Kansas secures outright Big 12 title with overtime win over West Virginia

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Frank Mason III capped one of the biggest comebacks in Allen Fieldhouse history to lead No. 9 Kansas over No. 20 West Virginia 76-69, giving the Jayhawks their 11th consecutive Big 12 championship.

Mason scored the last eight points in overtime and finished with 19 points.

The Jayhawks 11 straight conference titles trail only the 13 in a row UCLA won in the John Wooden era.

Junior forward Perry Ellis, the Jayhawks’ leading scorer, appeared to injure his knee late in the first half and did not return.

Daxter Miles had 23 points for West Virginia (22-8, 10-7), which was without star guard Juwan Staten.

Trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, Kansas (24-6, 13-4) finally tied it 59-all on two free throws by Devonte Graham with 11.5 seconds left in regulation. Miles’ 3-pointer gave West Virginia a quick 63-61 overtime lead before Jamari Traylor’s three-point play made it 64-63.

Mason went 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the waning seconds, the final shot going in with 4.1 seconds to play as the Jayhawks completed a 16-0 home season.

FHSU softball sweeps No. 13 Arkansas Tech

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State scored just two runs over 16 innings of play on Tuesday (March 3) but walked off with two 1-0 extra inning wins to complete the sweep over No. 13 Arkansas Tech. The games, played at the Mustang Softball Academy Indoor Facility, were regional victories for the Tigers and brought them to 5-6 on the year.

FHSU begins conference play this weekend with games at Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist, taking on the Jennies on Friday (March 6) and the Bearcats on Saturday (March 7).

Complete recaps of Tuesday’s games are below…

FHSU 1, ATU 0 (9 innings)
Fort Hays State was held hitless until the ninth, when a walk-off single up the middle from Kylie Strand scored Paxton Duran and gave the Tigers a 1-0 win in extra innings.

Duran threw all nine innings, striking out 11 with just one walk for the game while improving to 2-3 on the year.

At the plate, Strand had the Tigers only hit, but Amanda Vaupel drew three walks and Duran had two free passes.

FHSU threatened throughout the game thanks to nine walks on the day, though they left 11 runners on base – including the second and fourth innings, when the Tigers had two on but couldn’t convert.

Arkansas Tech’s best scoring opportunity came in the fifth, when Chelsea Reeves singled to right field to start the inning. From there, however, two pop ups and a fly out to center followed as FHSU got out of the inning.

In the sixth, Fort Hays State loaded the bases with just one out after two walks and a fielder’s choice error, but couldn’t push a runner home as the game remained scoreless – where it stayed until the ninth.

With one out in the ninth, Duran walked before stealing second base during Madison Putman’s at-bat. Putman and Courtney Dobson followed with walks of their own, sending Strand to the plate with bases loaded. After working a full count, Strand broke up the Golden Suns’ no-hitter with a single up the middle to score Duran and walk off with the win.

FHSU 1, ATU 0 (8 innings)
Again scoreless through seven, FHSU used an eighth inning rally to walk-off with a 1-0 win on Rilee Kreir’s single into center field.

Kelsey Kimminau (2-3) took the win, throwing all eight innings while scattering four hits, striking out five with no walks allowed.

At the plate, Krier was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the team while Amanda Vaupel (single) and Madison Putman (double) added the Tigers’ other two hits.

FHSU put runner on in the first, sixth and seventh innings, but otherwise saw the game move quickly with three up, three down throughout. Twice ATU had a runner on third, but clutch pitching by Kimminau and strong defense got the Tigers out of both jams.

In the bottom of the eighth, Mackenzie Villarreal pinch hit to lead off the inning, earning a walk before being replaced by Veronica Knittig on first. Madiaon Putman  followed by taking the first pitch she saw to the left center wall for a stand up double, moving Knittig to third. After two outs put the Tigers on the verge of headed to the ninth, Rilee Krier took a 1-1 pitch over the head of the shortstop into center field, providing the walk-off hit to score Knittig.
