Girls: TMP 63, Hutch-Trinity 55 2OT
It took two overtimes for the TMP Lady Monarchs to pick up their 17th win on the season, 63-55 over Hutchinson Trinity. The Lady Monarchs were on fire in the first quarter and half while they built up a 27-10 lead. The Lady Celtics would score the next 10 points to pull to within seven. Megan Koenigsman would hit one of her five three pointers on the night to push the TMP lead to 10 again. Trinity would cut the lead back to eight, 30-22, at halftime.
The two teams would battle back and forth in the second half. Trinity cut the TMP lead to four points, 41-37, after the third quarter. The visitors would shave four more points off the lead and tie the game at 49 with a chance to win it late. TMP was able to block a couple of shots late to send the game into overtim.
The first overtime had a lot of defense and not much offense. TMP scored the first bucket two minutes into the extra period on a Kaylor Gottschalk put back. Mariah Hammersmith would tie it at 51 with 25 seconds left to play. TMP couldn’t get on off balance shot to go from Koenigsman and the game went to a second overtime. In the second overtime TMP would get a Katelyn Zimmerman free throw to go up one. The shot of the night was the fifth and final three from Koenigsman that put the Lady Monarchs up 55-51 and the game wouldn’t get any closer.
Koenigsman finished with 26 to lead the Lady Monarchs. Melissa Pfeifer chipped in 11. TMP never trailed in the game and improve to 17-3 on the season. They will play next Friday night in Colby in the opening round of sub-state play.

GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS
Boys: TMP 75, Hutch Trinity 41
TMP delivered a first half knock out blow in their 75-41 win over Hutch Trinity on Thursday night at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. The Monarchs started the game on a 15-0 run and Trinity could never recover. TMP went in at the half with a 42-19 lead.
The second half was much the same as they first half. The Monarchs stretched their lead as high as 36 points before settling in for the 34 point victory. Kameron Schmidt led TMP with 17 points and Jared Vitztum added 15. Senior Max Megaffin went down with a sever ankle sprain in the third quarter, the one downside for TMP.
The Monarchs will be the number one seed in their sub-state next week in Colby. They will open up on Thursday night with the host Eagles.

Dom Samac hit one of two free throws with 0.2 seconds left to force overtime but Central Oklahoma outscores Fort Hays State 11-4 in the extra period for a 76-69 win Thursday night at Hamilton Field House in Edmond. The loss drops the Tigers to 16-11 and 9-9 in the MIAA. UCO improves to 18-9 and 11-7 and secures a first round home game in the MIAA tournament.
Mark Johnson:
Game Highlights:
Fort Hays State had a chance to win in regulation. Dom Samac took an inbound pass with 3.4 seconds to play and drove to the basket but missed the layup when he was fouled. After missing the first free throw, he hit the second to force overtime.
The Tigers hit just two of their 12 shots in overtime and were 0-for-5 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers used a 17-1 run to grab a 12-point lead midway through the first half. The Bronchos answer with an 18-6 run to tie but Achoki Moikobu banks in a 3-pointer to put FHSU up three at the half. UCO outscored the Tigers 12-2 to open the second half to go up seven. FHSU responded with a 12-3 run to pull within one and eventually took the lead at 55-53. Neither team would lead by more than three the rest of regulation.
Samac led Fort Hays State with 16 points. Tom Gabric added 11 and James Fleming and Jeremy Wilson 10. Drew Kite led the Tigers with a career-high eight rebounds.
The Tigers close out the regular season at Northeastern State. FHSU needs to win and have Washburn lose their home game with Pittsburg State to play at home in the first round of the MIAA tournament on Monday.

Hays Post
Fort Hays State used a 23-5 first half run to build a 16-point lead then had to hold off a Central Oklahoma second half rally for a 56-55 win Thursday night at Hamilton Field House in Edmond. The Lady Tigers, who clinched their first MIAA title outright the night before when Pittsburg State lost at Emporia State, improve to 25-2 and 17-1 in the MIAA. The Broncos fall to 15-12 and 8-9 in the MIAA.
Tony Hobson:
Game Highlights:
Down 14 at the half, the Bronchos open the second half with a 14-4 run to pull within four. They tied the game 53-53 with 8:28 to play and had a chance to take the lead inside a minute to play but Chelsea Robinson missed two free throws.
Jill Faxon leads the Tigers with 19 points including two big 3-pointers in the second half. Chelsea Mason adds 13. Kate Lehman was held to just five field goal attempts and scores six while grabbing 11 rebounds. Lehman moves past Shauna Porter into to second on FHSU all-time scoring list with 1,794 points.
The win may have been costly. Junior point guard Beth Bohuslavsky went down with a leg injury with 17 seconds to play and didn’t return.
ROB LAFARY, Associated Press
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Darius Carter had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 11 Wichita State to a 63-53 win over Indiana State on Wednesday night.
Fred VanVleet added 15 points while Tekele Cotton scored 12 in a win that saw Wichita State score 30 points in the paint.
The Shockers (26-3, 16-1 Missouri Valley) won their seventh straight game inside the Hulman Center, making it the second longest streak in school history against an opponent at its own arena. It was the 25th victory in the last 29 meetings against the Sycamores.
Indiana State (14-15, 10-7) led for nearly 12 minutes of the first half but a 19-9 run by the Shockers put them up 28-24 at halftime. They never looked back from there.
The Sycamores were led by Khristian Smith with 20 points.
FHSU Sports Information
No. 4 Fort Hays State was listed as the top ranked team for the second straight week in the NCAA Central Region Rankings, released Wednesday (Feb. 25). One other version of the poll will be released next week leading up the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, held March 8. The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA Regionals, held March 13-15 at a site to be determined.
The Central Region is made up of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and the Great American Conference (GAC). Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the postseason conference tournaments, with the final five seeds handed out on an at-large basis.
The Tigers (24-2, 16-1 MIAA) are 20-2 against NCAA Division II teams on the year – with all matchups coming against regional opponents. FHSU is one of five teams listed in the rankings, joining Pittsburg State (No. 2), Emporia State (No. 3), Central Missouri (No. 9) and Missouri Southern (No. 10). Three teams from the NSIC are listed in the poll, with Wayne State (No. 4), Northern State (No. 6) and Minnesota State-Mankato (No. 8) representing the conference. Harding (No. 5) and Arkansas Tech (No. 8) are the GAC teams listed in the rankings.
Changes in this week’s poll saw Emporia State and Wayne State switch spots at third and fourth, respectively, while Harding moved up to No. 5 and Arkansas Tech slipped two spots to seventh. Additionally, Northern State moved up to sixth and Minnesota State-Mankato dropped to eighth. Augustana fell out of the rankings, replaced by Missouri Southern.
Fort Hays State has wrapped up at least a share of the MIAA Regular Season Championship and holds a two-game lead over Pitt State with two games remaining. FHSU is one of three teams (PSU and ESU as well) to lock up a first round bye in the MIAA Tournament, held March 5-8. The top four teams in the conference standings guarantee themselves a spot in the MIAA quarterfinals in Kansas City, Mo.
FHSU is on the road this weekend to close the regular season, taking on Central Oklahoma this Thursday (Feb. 26) and Northeastern State on Saturday (Feb. 28).

Hays Post
Girls: TMP 73, Plainville 66
A battle between two Mid Continent League schools ensued on Tuesday night with the TMP Lady Monarchs coming out on top 73-66 at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays. It was back and forth early with both teams swapping first quarter leads before TMP took early control going up 25-15 after the first quarter. Plainville did not back down. The Lady Cardinals would outscore TMP 22-13 in the second quarter to pull within one point, 38-37, at halftime.
Most of the third quarter belonged to Plainville. The Lady Cardinals stormed out of the locker room and built a nine point lead late into the third quarter, 54-45. TMP would close the quarter on a five-nothing run, all from Madyson Koerner, to pull to within four at 54-50. Plainville scored the first basket of the fourth quarter and then the game was on.
TMP ripped off seven straight points to regain the lead at 57-56. The two teams would continue to battle back and forth, trading leads. TMP finally took control late and sealed the deal with a Melissa Pfeifer steal and layup followed by good execution from the free throw line.
TMP wrapped up the Mid Continent League regular season title with the win. They are now 16-3 on the season. Plainville finishes the regular season at 7-13. TMP will play one final regular season game at home on Thursday night against Hutchinson-Trinity.

GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS
Boys: TMP 62, Plainville 58
It was a battle of two good teams in Hays on Tuesday night as the TMP Monarchs bested the Plainville Cardinals 62-58 at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. Former Monarch player and coach Chris Drees roamed the opposite sideline for the first time. Drees played under Joe Hertel and also was an assistant coach for eight years.
The two were able to put the emotions to the side as the game started and it was a knock down, drag out the whole way. TMP was able to build an early five point lead in the first quarter before Plainville was able to post a seven-nothing run to end the quarter to take an 11-9 lead. The Monarchs were able to pull away a little bit in the second quarter but Plainville didn’t go away. The Cardinals were able to mount a 13-4 run to end the half and went to the locker room with a 28-27 lead.
Much like the girls game, the Cardinals controlled most of the third quarter. They were able to build a six point lead late in the third. TMP had an answer. The Monarchs were able to end the third on an 8-2 run and tied the game at 45 going to the fourth quarter. TMP led most of the fourth quarter, building their lead as high as six points at 55-49. Plainville would answer back with four straight to get to within two but could never tie or take the lead down the stretch.
Jared Vitztum led TMP with 20. Brent Gehring added 18 to lead the Cardinals. With the Monarch win the Hill City’s loss in Norton TMP was able to garner the outright Mid Continent League regular season title to go with their MCL Tournament title. TMP is now 13-6 on the season and will finish out the regular season at home on Thursday against Hutchinson-Trinity. Plainville finishes the regular season at 9-11.

Girls
Dodge City 60 – Hays 32
By the time that Hays rolled into Dodge City on Tuesday night, the Red Demons had already locked up the Western Athletic Conference championship winning each of their first six WAC games. In the final road game of the season for Hays, the Lady Indians were trying to put a blemish on that Dodge City record.
Hays held the lead on three different occasions in the first quarter, the latest at 8-6 when Talyn Kleweno hit a three pointer. Dodge City scored the next five points to go up 11-8, before Hays scored with less than a minute remaining in the quarter to get within one at 11-10.
The second quarter would not treat the Lady Indians nearly as well. Dodge City opened the quarter on a 12-1 run and finished it on a 10-0 run. Hays trailed at half time 33-13, and were 0-6 from the field.
Highlights
The Indians scored the first seven points of the second half cutting the lead down to 33-20. Dodge City then responded with a 11-3 run, going up 44-23. Hays would get no closer than 15 rest of the game, losing 60-32. Hays also lost Mattison Schlaefli in the game to an ankle injury during the second quarter.
Coach Kirk Maska
Hays falls to 5-14 on the season. The Red Demons are now 13-6. Hays will finish their regular season at home Friday versus Great Bend.
Boys
Dodge City 53 – Hays 44
Both Hays and Dodge City needed a win on Tuesday night to realistically have a chance at winning the Western Athletic Conference. Both teams entered the night a half game back of Garden City in the conference standings.
Dodge City jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Isaiah Nunnery stole the ball and scored the only first quarter points for Hays. The Indians trailed 13-2 after the first quarter.
Hays trailed by 13 points on three different times in the second quarter, but an Isaiah Nunnery basket got the Indians back within eleven at half time, trailing 23-12.
Highlights
Cash Hobson hit two three pointers to start the second half. He was fouled on the second one, giving him a four point play. Hays outscored Dodge City 14-10 in the third quarter and down 33-26 at the end of quarter.
Isaiah Nunnery hit a three pointer to open the fourth quarter, getting Hays the closest they would be all night at 33-29. Dodge City answered with a 9-1 run, building their lead to 12 with 4:24 remaining in the game. Hays pulled with in five one final time following a Keith Dryden three pointer at 46-41. Hays though would get no closer as Dodge City hit 12 of their 14 fourth quarter free throws dropping Hays 53-44.
Cash Hobson led the Indians with 13. Isaiah Nunnery added 11.
Coach Rick Keltner
Hays drops to 12-7 on the year and 4-3 in conference play. Dodge City is no 11-8 and 5-2. Garden City with a 20 point win claims a minimum share of the Western Athletic Conference title. Dodge City can claim a share by beat Liberal on Thursday.
Hays will finish their season at Great Bend on Friday at home for senior night.
The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team moves up one spot to No. 4 in the latest USA Today/WBCA poll. Alaska-Anchorage remains at No. 1 for a second consecutive wee.
