FHSU’s Micheal Jordan named to Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Third Team

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State senior safety Michael Jordon was named to the 2014 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Team on Wednesday (Feb. 11). The three-time All-MIAA selection earned third team honors at safety. Jordan is the third FHSU player to earn All-America honors under head coach Chris Brown.

Jordan earns the distinction after being named to three All-Super Region 3 teams (Don Hansen – 1st Team, Daktronics – 1st Team, and Beyond Sports Network – Honorable Mention) this year. Jordan also earned All-MIAA First Team honors this season.

Complete Don Hanson NCAA II All-American Team

A senior from Kerens, Texas, Jordan finished with 250 tackles in his career, sixth-most in Fort Hays State’s NCAA Division II history. He also finished with six interceptions, 10 pass break-ups, five forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in his career. This season, he finished third on the team in tackles with 80, adding an interception, a sack, and an MIAA-best four forced fumbles. He had a hand in seven turnovers this year for the Tigers, which includes the four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one interception.

Jordan is the first All-America selection for Tiger football since 2011, when Alex Whitehill (linebacker) and Ethan Kosjer (punter) earned the honors. Jordan is the sixth FHSU player to earn Don Hansen All-America honors, all since the 2008 season.

Salina Central sweeps Hays High

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Girls
Salina Central 59 – Hays 42

For a fourth consecutive game, one bad quarter blew open a close game for the Hays High Lady Indians. Hays, trying to snap an eight game losing streak, was taking on one of the best class 5A has to offer. Salina Central came in ranked 6th and 11-3 on the season.

Hays hung with the Lady Mustangs early after falling behind 5-0. The Lady Indians surged to tied the game at eight with three minutes to go in the first quarter. Central responded by closing the quarter on a 7-2 run taking a 15-10 lead.

Highlights

Hays stayed close through the second quarter and had the ball twice down by one point at 20-19, but failed to scored on either occasion. But still they trailed by just six at half time 25-19.

Hays kept the deficit at six midway through the third quarter, when Central closed on a 10-0 running to go up 44-28. Hays never got closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter, losing 59-42.

Coach Kirk Maska

Audra Schmeidler led the Indians with 13. Talyn Kleweno scored in double figures for the first time with 11.

Hays falls to 3-12 on the year. Salina Central is 12-3.

Boys
Salina Central 49 – Hays 46

Hays and Salina Central played to two close games last season, and on Tuesday night they did again. Salina Central came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the state having won nine straight games. It was also a show down of state ranked teams with Hays at #10 in 4A-D1 and Central #3 in 5A.

Hays jumped out to a five point lead on three different occasions in the first half, the last coming at 15-10 in the second quarter. Central tied the game at 18 and again at 20 with 1:55 to go in the half. Salina Central then would score five point with out the Indians ever getting a possession. The Mustangs hit three of four free throws, two from a technical foul, and then a basket during a 13-2 run. Hays fell behind by seven before two free throws pulled the gap back to five at half time 27-22.

Highlights

Hays again fell behind seven early in the third quarter 31-24, but then fought back. Brady Werth scored 11 of the Indians 13 third quarter points to pull with in two, 37-35. The Indians tied the game at 39 with 6:31 remaining in the game, but never took the lead. Free throw shooting became an issue for both Hays and Central down the stretch. Hays made just 5 of their final attempts, two of which would have tied the game at different scores. Central made three of their final six in trying to put the game away in the final forty seconds. Hays had the ball with 1.8 seconds remaining, but never got off a shot, falling 49-46.

Coach Rick Keltner

Hays falls to 10-5, losing three of their last four games to Scott City, Salina South, and Salina Central. Central has now won ten in a row, and hasn’t lost since the calendar turned to 2015. The Mustangs are 12-3.

Brady Werth was the only Indian in double figures with 24.

Hays will play at home again on Friday taking on Liberal.

FHSU’s Lehman’s garners MIAA Athlete of the Week honors for seventh time this season

MIAA

For the seventh time this season, Fort Hays State’s Kate Lehman is the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week after averaging a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, while adding 4.5 blocks per game in a pair of home wins over Nebraska-Kearney and Emporia State.

Lehman helped No. 3 ranked FHSU set a new single-season school record for consecutive wins, now at 21. She scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, while notching 5 blocked shots in a 69-52 win over Nebraska-Kearney. She helped FHSU gain a regular season sweep over No. 6 ranked Emporia State, helping the Tigers to a 72-62 win with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and four blocked shots.

The 6-4 senior center is a native of Newton, Kan. where she competed at Newton High School.

FHSU’s Samac named MIAA men’s basketball Athlete of the Week

MIAA

Fort Hays State Dom Samac is this week’s MIAA Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week after helping the Tigers to a pair of wins last week. Coming off the bench, Samac averaged 25 points per game by recording back-to-back 25-point games. The 25 points is a career high.

He shot 10-of-14 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds in each game, just missing double-doubles in each contest. In an 88-77 win over Nebraska-Kearney, he sparked a 21-9 run by the Tigers to close the game by scoring a 3-point play to push a Tiger lead to four points, then dished out a pair of assists on 3-point field goals to get the lead to eight. His final points came with just over three minutes to go to push the lead to eight once more. In a 73-66 win over Emporia State, he hit a shot with 3:33remaining to put the Tigers in front by one and they never trailed the rest of the way. The shot started a 14-6 run to close the game.

The 6-9 junior forward is a native of Zagreb, Croatia playing basketball at both North Broward Prep and Denver University.

No. 16 Wichita State dominates Missouri State

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Fred VanVleet had No. 16 Wichita State’s first triple-double in 43 years and Ron Baker scored 17 for the Shockers, who pounded Missouri State 78-35 on Saturday night.

VanVleet finished with 10 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes for Wichita State (21-3, 11-1 Missouri Valley Conference). Shaquille Morris and Darius Carter added 10 points each.

Missouri State (9-15, 3-9) has lost nine of its last 10 and suited up just seven scholarship players due to injuries, illness and departures. Gavin Thurman led the Bears with nine points.

Starting point guard Dorrian Williams did not play due to symptoms from a concussion suffered Wednesday. Christian Kirk, scheduled to start at forward, also did not play due to “health issues,” according to coach Paul Lusk.
