FHSU wrestling wins at Central Missouri

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State wrestling traded wins with Central Missouri at the first six weights, but reeled off four straight wins in the heavier weights to claim a 30-11 dual win on Wednesday night (Feb. 4) in Warrensburg, Mo. The 15th-ranked Tigers moved to 7-6 overall and finished the MIAA dual schedule at 3-2.

Open weights were key to FHSU building a big lead early. Adam Ludwin at 125 pounds and Noah Killip at 141 pounds each received forfeit wins, spotting FHSU 12 points through three matches. An Anthony Calderon 11-7 loss at 133 pounds fell in between the free points as FHSU led 12-3 after three matches.

Returning national champion Frank Cagnina of Central Missouri, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation at 149 pounds, pulled the Mules within four at 12-8 with a 19-2 technical fall over Jacob Kay.

Bradley Little nearly got all five of the points back at 157 pounds, scoring a 10-1 major decision over Evan Young of UCM to push the Tiger lead to 16-8. But the trend of wins trading back and forth continued as Josh Thomson of UCM edged Kregg Clarke by a 4-3 decision at 165 pounds.

Leading by five in the dual, the Tigers would reel off 14 unanswered points to finish the dual. Eighth-ranked Josh Rodriguez picked up a 7-4 decision over Archie Williams at 174 pounds, then seventh-ranked Jon Inman cruised to a 13-2 major decision over Michael Boyd of UCM at 184 pounds. Cash Drylie also won in major fashion, 11-2 over Nicholas Lovejoy at 197 pounds. Fifth-ranked Trey Page closed out the dual win for FHSU with a 4-0 win at heavyweight.

FHSU racked up nine bonus points in the dual, six off a pair of forfeits, and three off of three major decisions. In five of seven dual wins this year, the Tigers have scored 30 or more points.

The Tigers return to action in a week in Alamosa, Colo. (Feb. 11), where they take on a familiar foe from the RMAC in Adams State.

KSHSAA moving 1A Division II state basketball tourney to Dodge City

Due to a potential conflict with Fort Hays State University hosting an NCAA II regional tournament, the Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced next month’s 1A-Division II state basketball tournament is being moved from Hays to Dodge City. The tournament now will be played at United Wireless Arena due a possible conflict at Gross Memorial Coliseum should the FHSU women’s team receive a bid to host the NCAA II Central Regional.

In the past, KSHSAA has altered the start times of the state tournament to accommodate the potential hosting of a men’s NCAA regional. However, the women’s tournament starts Friday, March 13, and runs through Monday, March 16, creating conflicts with the semifinal round, as well as the consolation and championship games.

“We had looked at the possibility of playing the last two days of the high school tournament at Hays High,” said FHSU Athletic Director Curtis Hammeke. “That wasn’t the best alternative for the high school 1A programs. The solution is to have that tournament move to Dodge City right now and they will be able to maintain their format and it also will allow us the opportunity to support our women’s success.”

KSHSAA Executive Director Gary Musselman said his organization simply cannot wait until the NCAA II regional hosts are announced.

“There’s just too many logistical things that have to be in place,” Musselman added. “We want to be very respectful and help open the opportunity for Hays.”

Musselman said they will consider Hays as a host in the future.

“There’s nothing in this decision that would prevent us from extending invitations to Hays again for basketball tournaments in the future,” Musselman said.

Hammeke indicated this is a one-year deal and that FHSU will be in discussions with KSHSAA this spring to bring the tournament back in 2016.

Salina South sweeps Hays

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Salina South 48 – Hays 39

The Hays High Lady Indians and Salina South Lady Cougars had combined for just five wins entering Tuesday night’s game. It made sense then that neither team could gain much separation from one another. Hays led early 8-5 after a 6-0 run and then 10-9 after the first quarter.

Hays built their lead to five on two occasions and had the ball up 19-14 but couldn’t score. South went on a 7-0 lead to gain the lead at 21-19, when Audra Schmeidler hit a three to put the Lady Indians up 22-21. South responded with a driving layup on their next possession to take a 23-22 lead at half time.

Highlights

The Lady Indians scored the first seven points of the second half to build their biggest lead of the game at 29-23. South though responded with a 11-4 run to close the third quarter up 34-33.

South went on a game defining run scoring the first eight points of the fourth quarter, while taking a 42-33 lead. Hays trimmed the lead down to seven on two occasions but never got any closer.

Coach Kirk Maska

Audra Schmeidler and Maddie Keller each scored 10 points to lead Hays. The Lady Indians fall to 3-11. South is now 3-10 and have one back to back games.

Salina South 55 – Hays 51

Nothing seemed to go right for Hays High in the first quarter against Salina South. The Cougars hit their first four three point baskets and took a 24-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cougar’s Jacob Foster outscored Hays himself in the first quarter 14-8.

The Indians trailed by 18 to open up the second quarter on their first field goal. Hays slowly crawled back in the game with a 10-4 and 8-2 run to trail 35-26 at half.

Highlights

Hays High continued to chip away at the lead getting five straight points to open the third quarter from Cash Hobson to get with in 35-31. Hays would trail by six after three quarter 42-36.

As they did all game, Hays chipped away at the lead. A three pointer from Drew Young made it a one point ball game then a second three after an offensive rebound tied the game at 50 with 4:15 remaining. Hays though managed just one point over the remainder of the game, falling 55-51.

Coach Rick Keltner

Hays was led in scoring by Isaiah Nunnery with 18. Drew Young scored a career high 17.

The Indians fall to 10-4 on the year. South has won 6 of their last 7 games and are 8-5 on the season.

Royals come to terms on one-year deal with Lorenzo Cain

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Postseason star Lorenzo Cain and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract for $2,725,000, just ahead of what would have been Major League Baseball’s first salary arbitration hearing this year.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas also settled Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year contract for $2.64 million.

Cain had asked for $3.6 million and had been offered $2 million when the sides swapped figures last month. In addition to his salary, the speedy outfielder would earn a $25,000 bonus for 505 plate appearances.

The sides entered the room for the hearing, which was scheduled to start at 2 p.m., then stepped outside the room and reached the agreement.

Cain, 28, hit a team-best .301 with five homers, 53 RBIs and 28 steals in 33 chances last season, when he made $546,000. He was MVP of the Royals’ sweep of Baltimore in the AL Championship Series after batting .533 (8 for 15) with a pair of doubles. He hit .308 in the World Series loss to San Francisco.

Moustakas, Royals agree to $2.64 million deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Third baseman Mike Moustakas and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a $2.64 million, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration.

Moustakas would earn a $10,000 bonus under Tuesday’s deal if he has 550 or more plate appearances.

The 26-year-old hit .212 with 21 doubles and 54 RBIs last year, when he made $549,000. He had asked for $3.1 million in arbitration and had been offered $1.85 million.

Five Royals remain in arbitration: pitchers Danny Duffy, Kelvin Herrera and Greg Holland; first baseman Eric Hosmer; and outfielder Lorenzo Cain.

Selden leads No. 9 Kansas past No. 15 Iowa State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Wayne Selden Jr. scored 19 points in a hot-shooting second half to spark No. 9 Kansas past No. 15 Iowa State 89-76 on Monday night.

Selden, after missing all three of his shots and scoring only one point in the first half, drilled four of his first five 3-pointers after intermission, often finding himself virtually unguarded on the right wing, as the Jayhawks (19-3, 8-1 Big 12) padded their lead in the Big 12 race to 1 1/2 games.

Georges Niang had 24 points for Iowa State (16-5, 6-3), which dropped out of a second-place tie with West Virginia.

Leading 35-28 after a seesaw first half, the Jayhawks reeled off a 14-6 run the first 4 minutes, 45 seconds after intermission, with Selden scoring eight points, including two uncontested 3-pointers. Iowa State called time out and tried to regroup after Selden’s second 3-pointer put Kansas on top 49-34 but never got the lead under nine points.
