Hays girls fall to Olathe South

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

The Hays High Lady Indians hung tough for the first four minutes in their game on Thursday versus Olathe South. The Lady Falcons though were just to much as Hays fell 76-27 in the first round of the Mid-America Classic in McPherson.

Highlights

Hays trailed 10-2, then scored back to back field goals to get with in three. South then used a 14-2 run to close out the first quarter leading 24-9. Hays again tried to surge cutting the lead to 11 at 25-14 and had the basketball, but never got any closer.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays was led in scoring by Audra Schmeidler who scored 9. South had three in double figures, led by Kala Holder with 21.

Hays falls to 3-8, Olathe South (#3-6A) is now 9-2.

Hays will play Valley Center in the consolation semifinals at 3pm Friday. The Hornets lost to Manhattan 57-47.

Wichita State baseball fined, placed on probation

NCAA

Wichita State University did not monitor the activities of a former administrative assistant regarding her use of a VIP account provided by the school’s apparel provider, according to a decision issued by a Division I Committee on Infractions panel. For nearly two years, 21 baseball players purchased shoes, clothing, hunting gear and other non-athletics items for a total of $7,594.18, using the 50 percent discount. Because the discount provided by the former assistant was not generally available to the full student body, family and friends, the discount is considered an extra benefit to the players.

Penalties include one year probation, a $5,000 fine and the school must vacate all wins in which the baseball players participated while ineligible.

The former assistant provided her log-in information to the baseball players so they could access her computer and VIP account. The athletes paid for the items themselves and believed they could order items in this manner as a part of the school’s agreement with the apparel provider.

While the former assistant had a working knowledge of NCAA rules, the school acknowledged it should have provided her with further rules education and didn’t closely monitor her VIP account activities. Additionally, the school failed to implement recommended changes to its apparel purchasing system that would have ultimately helped avoid the extra benefit violations. Because of this, the school failed to monitor its baseball program.

Penalties and corrective measures include:

  • Public reprimand and censure.
  • One year of probation from January 29, 2015 through January 28, 2016.
  • A fine of $5,000.
  • A vacation of all regular season and conference tournament wins in which the 21 baseball players competed while ineligible. The public decision contains further detail.

Members of the Committee on Infractions are drawn from NCAA membership and members of the public. The members of the panel who reviewed this case are Carol Cartwright, president emeritus at Kent State University; Melissa Conboy, deputy director of athletics at the University of Notre Dame;  Thomas Hill, senior vice president for student affairs at Iowa State University; Joel Maturi, former University of Minnesota athletics director; Eleanor W. Myers, chief hearing officer and law professor and faculty athletics representative at Temple University; Jim O’Fallon, law professor and faculty athletics representative at the University of Oregon; and Greg Sankey, executive associate commissioner and chief operating officer for the Southeastern Conference.

Tiger wrestling stay 15th in latest poll; Rodriguez, Inman and Page remain ranked

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State Wrestling stayed put at No. 15 in the latest version of the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 20. The rankings, released Wednesday (Jan. 28) by the organization, saw FHSU earn 51 points compared to 39 points in the previous version.

FHSU (6-6, 2-2 MIAA) wrestled in three events last weekend, rolling over Newman, 41-8, in a conference dual before a comeback effort to then-No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney fell short in a 21-14 loss. The Tigers closed out the week with a first place finish and three individual champions at the Kansas Cup.

Josh Rodriguez (174), Jon Inman (184) and Trey Page (285) stayed in the individual rankings, where they’ve been all season. Rodriguez (14-4 this season) was eighth for the second week in a row while Inman (28-5 on the year) moved up to No. 7 in his weight class. Page pushed his season record to 36-2 on the year and rose one spot to No. 5 at heavyweight.

No. 9 Kansas holds on for win at TCU

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Basketball Writer

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Frank Mason III scored 16 points with a couple of key shots in the go-ahead run and No. 9 Kansas held on for a 64-61 victory at TCU after his missed free throws Wednesday night.

The Big 12-leading Jayhawks (17-3, 6-1 Big 12), who had as much as a 13-point lead early, found themselves down after TCU scored the first seven points after halftime.

Mason’s driving layup with 13:26 left got the Jayhawks within 43-42 and started a 12-0 run that put them ahead to stay.

But a layup by Mason with 3:35 left was their last field goal. He then missed two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to leave TCU (14-6, 1-6) a chance to force overtime.

A long 3-point try by Charles Hill Jr. ricocheted off the back rim at the buzzer.

The Tigers shoot 53-percent including 7-of-13 from beyond the arc while holding ESU to 33-percent shooting.

VanVleet lifts No. 12 Wichita State to win over Loyola

By JEFFREY PARSON
Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Fred VanVleet scored a career-high 27 points to lead No. 12 Wichita State to a 58-47 win over Loyola on Wednesday night.

Ron Baker added 16 points as the Shockers (19-2, 9-0 Missouri Valley) shot just 41 percent from the floor and 43 percent from the free throw line. VanVleet and Baker were a combined 16 of 28 from the floor. The rest of the team was 6 of 26.

Devon Turk scored nine points for Loyola (13-8, 3-6), which was held to its lowest scoring output of the season.

Wichita State’s shooting struggles started right away. The Shockers had 17 shots in the game’s first eight minutes but made just four of them, including a VanVleet 3-pointer for a 10-6 lead.

With Wichita State unable to convert shots, the Ramblers stayed close. Jeff White’s baseline drive and layup gave Loyola a 16-15 lead with 6:03 remaining in the half.

No. 17 Mountaineers turn up pressure to beat K-State

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Tarik Phillip matched a career-high 12 points and West Virginia, relying on its high-pressure defense, shut down Kansas State for a 65-59 victory Tuesday night.

In a game marred by fouls and poor play, the Mountaineers (17-3, 5-2 Big 12) forced the Wildcats (12-9, 5-3) into 25 turnovers while holding them to 36 percent shooting from the field.

West Virginia’s leading scorer, Juwan Staten, had just 11 points while dealing with foul trouble all night. Second-leading scorer Devin Williams had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Wildcats played most of the way without Nino Williams, who had been averaging 21 points his last two games. The senior forward appeared to be dealing with a left knee injury, spending time on a stationary bike and then wrapping it in ice during the second half.
