Kansas State holds on late to beat No. 22 Baylor

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Nino Williams had 18 points to lead a big second-half rally, and Kansas State forced Kenny Chery to miss a layup at the buzzer to preserve a 63-61 victory over No. 22 Baylor on Saturday.

Marcus Foster added 11 points and Thomas Gipson finished with nine, including a clutch free throw with 4.8 seconds left, to help the Wildcats (10-7, 4-1 Big 12) win their fourth straight game.

Kansas State trailed by as many as 12 in the second half before taking its first lead with about 6 minutes to go. The Bears (13-4, 2-3) were still within three at 61-58 with 45 seconds left, but Chery and Lester Medford each missed open 3-pointers that would have tied it.

Nigel Johnson made one of two foul shots for Kansas State, and Chery quickly raced the other way for layup with 5.4 seconds to go. And after Gipson was fouled and made his second of two free throws, Chery’s runner to the left of the lane bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Chery, who hit the winner with 4 seconds left against No. 11 Iowa State this week, finished with 21 points for Baylor. Taurean Prince added 20 points off the bench.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Darius Carter and Ron Baker scored 18 points apiece to lead No. 13 Wichita State to a 61-41 victory over Evansville on Saturday in front of 7,015 at the Ford Center.

The Shockers (16-2, 6-0 Missouri Valley) held the Aces to their season-low point total and a season-low 30 percent from the field.

D.J. Balentine scored 16 points to lead Evansville (13-5, 3-3).

Wichita State held the Aces scoreless for a nine-minute stretch in the first half, helping the Shockers take a 28-18 halftime lead.

The season-high Ford Center crowd did little to rattle the battle-tested Shockers, who have qualified for three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the 2013 Final Four.

Coach Kiirk Maska

Kaylie Schoendaller signs with DCCC

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Kaylie Schoendaller knew in eighth grade she wanted to play college in softball. Friday the Hays High senior made it a reality by signing her Letter of Intent with Dodge City Community College. Schoendaller appeared in three games her freshman year, but the batting ability was obvious. In eight at bats she had a double and home run while driving in five runs and scoring three times.

Kaylie Schoendaller

It was her sophomore year that turned heads. Schoendaller blasted 11 home runs and drove in 34 runs. Five of those home runs came in a single double header versus Colby. Schoendaller’s power numbers were a bit down during her junior season, but also noticed a trend of opposing pitchers not giving her much to hit either. She is a career .338 hitter with 18 career home runs, which already has set the school career record.

Coach Abby Maska

Schoendaller is looking to work towards a degree in sports management.

Hays High will compete in 4A-D1 in the upcoming softball season.

Royals relievers Coleman, Collins to avoid arbitration

Coleman, a 28-year-old right-hander, had a 5.56 ERA in 31 appearances with the Royals and earned $537,000. He has pitched parts of the past four seasons in Kansas City.

Kansas City still has seven players in arbitration without deals: pitchers Danny Duffy, Kelvin Herrera and Greg Holland; first baseman Eric Hosmer; third baseman Mike Moustakas; and outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson.
