Hays Post

Girls
Great Bend 42 – Hays 36.

The Hays High Lady Indians scored the first points of the game against Great Bend off the tip-off to take a 2-0 lead Tuesday night. Hays though wouldn’t score for the remainder of the first quarter and looked to be on their way to a rough night against the Panthers. The Lady Indians however fought back. After falling behind 14-2 early in the second quarter, Hays wend on a 10-1 run to get within three at 15-12. Hays and Great Bend swapped 5-0 runs to end the first half, leaving Hays trailing 20-17 at half time.

Game Highlights

Great Bend opened up a seven point lead in the third quarter, but Hays close the third on a 13-5 run to take the lead 32-31 after three. Ashlyn Parrish capped the run with a three pointer as time expired in the third quarter. Hays then built their lead to four at 36-32 with 5:15 remaining in the game. The Lady Indians though wouldn’t score again. Great Bend ended the game on a 10-0 run to take a 42-36 victory.

Boys
Hays 65 – Great Bend 40

Coach Rick Keltner wanted to see his team play tougher than they did the first time Hays and Great Bend met up this year. Back in the second game of the season, Hays beat Great Bend 54-50 in the semi-finals of the Hays City Shootout. Tuesday night, coach Keltner liked the improvement of his team in a 65-40 over the Panthers.

Great Bend led early at 2-0 and 4-2, but Hays went on a 17-0 run that lasted into the second quarter. Isaiah Nunnery scored eleven straight points as part of that run. Great Bend got the game back to single digits just twice in the second quarter, but never closer. Hays High established their biggest lead of the first half with a Keith Dryden three from the corner as the first half clock expired to give Hays a 30-14 lead.

Game Highlights

Hays never let Great Bend back into the ball game in the second half, building their lead as high as 23 in the third quarter.

Hays improves to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Great Bend has dropped six straight games and is 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the WAC.

Rick Keltner Postgame Interview

Hays will host Garden City on Friday. The Garden City boys are 3-0 in conference play and Hays is 2-0.

No. 9 Kansas holds on to beat No. 24 Oklahoma State

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Frank Mason III had 16 points and nine rebounds, Kelly Oubre Jr. added 14 points and ninth-ranked Kansas beat No. 24 Oklahoma State 67-57 on Tuesday night to remain perfect in the Big 12.

The Jayhawks (14-2) moved to 3-0 in league play for the ninth straight year largely thanks to its ability to get to the foul line. Kansas was 32 of 46 on free throws while attempting just 43 field goals in a game made choppy by the abundance of whistles.

Oklahoma State (12-4, 2-2) was still within 61-55 with 1:48 remaining, but Mason made two of his nine free throws and Devonte’ Graham added two more moments later to put the game away.

Le’Bryan Nash scored all but two of his 21 points in the second half to lead the Cowboys.

Lady Tigers still out of USA Today/WBCA Top-25

Despite their 13-game win streak and 14-1 record, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team is unable to crack into the latest USA TODAY/WBCA Division II Top-25 poll. The Tigers pick up 35 more votes and are the highest vote getter not in the top-25.

Emporia State drops from the top spot following their first loss of the season and is ranked third. Pittsburg State moves up three to No. 2. Washburn, who has three losses on the year, drop to No. 18.

Royals give manager Ned Yost extension through 2016 season

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The AL champion Royals and Ned Yost have agreed on a one-year contract extension that will keep the manager with the franchise through the 2016 season.

Yost said after leading the Royals to an improbable pennant last season that he hoped to manage a few more years. His contract had been set to expire after the 2015 season.

Yost became the Royals’ manager in May 2010 and presided over a massive rebuilding effort that culminated with the end of a 29-year playoff drought. The Royals took the San Francisco Giants to the seventh game of the World Series before their season finally ended.

The longest-tenured manager in club history, Yost will soon become its winningest. He has 373 victories, trailing only Dick Howser (404) and Whitey Herzog (410).

Ohio State wins first ever college football playoff

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – The Ohio State Buckeyes are winners of the first-ever College Football Playoff.

The Buckeyes claimed their fifth outright national championship as Ezekiel Elliott ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-20 triumph over Oregon in Arlington, Texas. Ohio State saw a 21-7 lead shrink to 21-20 midway through the third quarter before Elliott scored on runs of nine, two and one yards. His final TD put the game out of reach with 28 seconds left.

Elliott averaged an amazing 232 yards in his last three games.

Cardale (kahr-DAL’) Jones fared very well in just his third collegiate start for the Buckeyes, completing 16 of 23 passes for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Jones also scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter to put OSU ahead 21-7.

The Buckeyes overcame four turnovers to give Urban Meyer his first title in his third season at Ohio State.

Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) threw for the Ducks’ only touchdowns, including a 70-yard strike to Byron Marshall. Both TDs came on Oregon’s first possession of each half, but the Ducks’ high-octane offense wasted too many drives while gaining 465 total yards.

Mariota was 24 of 37 for 333 yards and an interception in what is likely his final game at Oregon. He has until Thursday to decide if he’ll skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

It’s the third national championship for Meyer, who also won it with Florida in 2006 and 2008 under the old BCS system. Ohio State’s previous national title came in 2002.

The Buckeyes reeled off 13 straight wins to end the year 14-1. A championship seemed highly unlikely after they lost to Virginia Tech in their second game of the season. Ohio State needed overtime to beat Penn State in late October before scoring at least 42 points in seven of their last eight games.

The Ducks finish 13-2.

John Fox out after 4 AFC West titles, 4 playoff nosedives

By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Pro Football Writer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Coach John Fox and the Denver Broncos are parting ways following the team’s latest playoff meltdown.

Fox won the AFC West all four of his years in Denver, but each of those seasons ended in ugly fashion in the playoffs, including Sunday’s stunning 24-13 loss to Indianapolis.

Fox was 49-22 in Denver after going 73-71 in nine years with the Carolina Panthers.

In three seasons with Peyton Manning, the Broncos went 38-10 in the regular season but were upset twice at home in the divisional round and got upended by the Seahawks 43-8 in last year’s Super Bowl.

The Broncos went 8-8 in Fox’s first year, when Tebowmania was in full pitch. The stakes were raised when Manning replaced Tim Tebow in 2012.

K-State’s Foster Named Big 12/ESPN.com Player of the Week

Kansas State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore Marcus Foster earned both ESPN.com National Player of the Week and Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honors on Monday after helping K-State to a pair of Big 12 wins last week.

Foster collects his first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor after winning Rookie of the Week distinction twice as a true freshman in 2013-14. He was also twice named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week last season. He is the second Wildcat this season to earn the Big 12 accolade, following Nino Williams on Dec. 15, 2014. Overall, it marks the school’s 23rd league Player of the Week honor since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997.

Foster averaged 18.5 points on 50 percent shooting (11-of-22), including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from 3-point range, in 25 minutes per game in helping the Wildcats to a home win over TCU (58-53) and a road victory over No. 16/18 Oklahoma (66-63) in overtime. He also shot a stellar 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free throw line. He has now scored in double figures in 39 of his 49 career games, including 12 this season.

Following his first scoreless game, Foster came back in the Wildcats’ first Big 12 win against TCU on Jan. 7, as he scored a game-high 23 points on 5-of-11 field goals, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, with one rebound and one assist in 29 minutes in his first game off the bench. He also knocked down 10-of-12 from the free throw line, including 9-of-10 in the final five minutes. It was his 12th career 20-point game and fourth of the season.

Foster scored nine of his 14 points in the win over Oklahoma on Saturday in the last 35 seconds of regular and overtime to help the Wildcats claim their first win over a ranked team on the road since 2012. FHSU’s Keehn breaks school’s 3000 meter indoor record

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State distance runner Cory Keehn broke the FHSU Indoor Track and Field record in the 3000-meter run at the Bill Easton Classic, hosted by the University of Kansas on Friday (Jan. 9). With a time of 8:21.35, he also gained a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event.

Keehn topped former teammate Alex Hendee’s record of 8:24.12, set in 2013, by nearly three seconds. Keehn now owns both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter indoor records at FHSU, after setting the 5,000-meter record in 2014. Keehn finished second among 28 competitors in the race, topped only by Josh Munsch of the University of Kansas, who ran a time of 8:18.48.

Keehn currently sits third on the NCAA Division II qualifying list as his time was converted to 8:15.59 because of the track size at the University of Kansas.

A handful of both men’s and women’s competitors from Fort Hays State competed at the Bill Easton Classic. See the link above for results.
