LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas coach David Beaty began filling out his first staff on Tuesday, which includes hiring Rob Likens away from California to serve as his offensive coordinator.

Likens had been the Golden Bears’ assistant head coach the past two seasons.

Je’Ney Jackson will serve as strength and conditioning coach, Kevin Kane will coach linebackers, Calvin Thibodeaux will handle the defensive line, Klint Kubiak will coach wide receivers and Gene Weir will handle high school relations.

Beaty already had announced that Clint Bowen, who had served as the Jayhawks’ interim coach this past season, would be retained as defensive coordinator. Reggie Mitchell will continue to coach running backs and Louie Matsakis will serve as director of personnel.

FHSU remains just out of latest Division II women’s rankings

They’re still not ranked, but getting closer. Despite their current 11-game win streak and 12-1 record, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team remains just outside the latest USA Today/WBCA Division II poll. The Lady Tigers received 88 votes this week and sit at No. 27 if you extend the poll.

Three teams from the MIAA are ranked this week with Emporia State still holding down the top spot and Pittsburg State fifth. Washburn drops from from No. 8 to 13th.

FHSU Killip named MIAA Wrestler of the Week

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State’s Noah Killip was named the MIAA Wrestler of the Week, announced Tuesday (Jan. 6) by the conference office.

Killip, the Tigers’ 141 pounder, picked up a 9-5 decision over No. 2 Kyle Webb in FHSU’s dual with No. 10 Lindenwood last Saturday. Two first period takedowns gave Killip an early advantage, and after a battle through the second period, the two wrestlers headed to the third in a 4-4 tie. In the third, Killip notched a reversal early in the period to move his riding time ove a minute, and though Webb escaped inside a minute to go, a late takedown from Killip sealed the match for the junior. Killip is now 14-2 on the year, and is the second FHSU wrestler to be named MIAA Athlete of the Week (Jon Inman was given the award on Nov. 18).

FHSU is in Fort Wayne, Ind., this weekend at the NWCA National Duals. The Tigers are scheduled to face No. 7 St. Cloud State in the first round.

Hays High’s Bo Black one and done, leaving for Shawnee Mission Northwest

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

The Bo Black era at Hays High school lasted all of one season. Coach Black today announced he has accepted a teaching and head football coaching position at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Black led the Indians to an undefeated Western Athletic Conference title and was named coach of the year. Hays was 7-2 on the year, but missed the playoffs with a 1-2 district record. Black has spent the past 14 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, 13 of those in Great Bend. Black has an overall coaching record of 89-49.

Coach Black said that he was content with his job in Hays, but when Shawnee Mission Northwest came calling, the opportunity was just too good to pass up. The job opportunity didn’t become available until December and proceeded quickly from there.

Black said of Hays, “It’s a great place to live, it’s a great place to raise a family, it’s a great school district to teach in. (There) are a lot of things that are really, really good here.”

The new job though from a football coaching opportunity was a big draw. “From the football coaching perspective, it’s just a better opportunity professionally with some really good things happening up there.”

The Shawnee Mission Northwest is a 6A school and competes in the Sunflower League. The Cougars went 2-7 this past season and have had losing seasons each of the past four years. The Cougars last made the playoffs in 2010, going 6-5.

Black and his family plan to remain in Hays for the rest of the 2nd semester, where he will serve as head track coach. His wife was also able to find a teaching position in the Shawnee Mission school district.

FHSU’s Lehman named MIAA Player of the Week for fourth time this season

FHSU Athletics

For the fourth time this season, Fort Hays State’s Kate Lehman was named the MIAA Womens’ Basketball Athlete of the Week following her performance against No. 22 Missouri Southern last weekend, announced Monday (Jan. 5) by the league office.

Lehman just missed a double-double in the team’s 89-70 win over No. 22 Missouri Southern, finishing with 31 points and nine rebounds in 31 minutes of action.  Lehman had 16 points in the game’s opening nine minutes and shot 14-of-19 from the field.  It was her third 30-plus scoring effort of the season and moved her into fourth on the school’s career scoring list (she now has 1,529 for her career).  The senior had seven of her nine rebounds come on the offense end, and added two blocks in the win.  From Newton, Kan., Lehman now has 12 MIAA Athlete of the Week honors in her career.

The Tigers are back in action on Monday, Jan. 5 against Southwest Baptist.  FHSU hosts the Bearcats at 5:30 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

No. 16 Wichita State beats Illinois State

By TAYLOR ELDRIDGE
Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Ron Baker scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and No. 16 Wichita State held off Illinois State 70-62 on Sunday.

Baker dished out a timely assist, Fred VanVleet hit some clutch shots, and Tekele Cotton converted another highlight-reel alley-oop as the Shockers won their 20th straight game over a Missouri Valley Conference foe.

Wichita State (12-2, 2-0) has also won 24 straight at Koch Arena, which is the fifth-longest active streak in the country.

Led by Daishon Knight’s 24 points, the Redbirds (8-6, 0-2) hung around in the second half but could never take the lead.

The Shockers finally got some breathing room when Darius Carter hit a jumper and Cotton made a 3-pointer for a 55-48 cushion with 5:26 left.

Mason, Selden help No. 13 Kansas beat UNLV

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Frank Mason had 18 points and seven assists, Wayne Selden added 16 points and No. 13 Kansas pulled away late to beat UNLV 76-61 on Sunday in the Jayhawks’ non-conference finale.

Perry Ellis also had 16 points, Kelly Oubre had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Cliff Alexander scored 10 off the bench to help the Jayhawks (11-2) win their 15th straight at Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas led just 63-57 with less than 6 minutes to go, but Mason assisted on a pair of baskets as the Jayhawks scored nine straight points to help put the game away.

Christian Wood had 12 points and eight boards for UNLV (9-5), which has never beaten Kansas in five tries. Cody Doolin also had 12 points, and Rashad Vaughn and Jelan Kendrick had 10 apiece.

19th-ranked FHSU wrestling can’t hold off No. 10 Lindenwood

FHSU Athletics

No. 19 Fort Hays State took a five-point lead into the final two matches of the day, but couldn’t hold on as No. 10 Lindenwood escaped Gross Memorial Coliseum with a 17-16 victory over the Tigers on Sunday, Jan. 4.

Each team won five matches, but it was the Lions’ three bonus points (compared to the Tigers’ one bonus point) that decided the match.

Noah Killip started the day at 141 pounds with a victory over No. 2 Kyle Webb, giving the Tigers an early 3-0 lead in the team score. Two first period takedowns gave Killip an early advantage, and after a battle through the second period, the two wrestlers headed to the third in a 4-4 tie. In the third, Killip notched a reversal early in the period to move his riding time over a minute. Though Webb escaped inside a minute to go, a late takedown from Killip sealed the match for the Tigers.

The Lions took a 5-3 lead at 149 pounds, as third-ranked Terrel Wilbourn (LWU) knocked off the Tigers’ Matt Ziegler by technical fall, 19-4, in 6:40.

Bradley Little (157 pounds) moved the Tigers back in front in the team score, 6-5, with an overtime decision (3-2) over Derrick Weller. Tied 1-1 after the first sudden victory period, Weller was awarded a stalling point to take a 2-1 lead, though Little maintained advantage time through the first tiebreaker. In the second of the two 30-second periods, Little picked up a reversal with 10 seconds to go in the match to snag a victory.

At 165 pounds, Lindenwood’s Kyle Jolas used a second period reversal and nearfall points in the third period to win by decision, 7-2, over Bryce Lewis, moving the Lions back into the team score lead, 8-6.

No. 6 Josh Rodriguez (FHSU) controlled his match at 174 pounds versus Jake Landals, winning 6-0 with over two minutes of riding time. Rodriguez scored a takedown in the first, then picked up three points in the second to lead, 5-0. From there, Rodriguez sat on top for the final period, trying for nearfall points but couldn’t turn Landals, settling for a decision.

No. 7 Jon Inman (FHSU) followed Rodriguez with another dominant performance for the Tigers, knocking off John McArdle (LWU) by major decision, 15-6. Inman scored six points in the second period to take control, scoring three takedowns in the match while racking up over a minute of riding time. Inman and McArdle were both NCAA Championship participants last season.

Holding a 13-8 advantage with four matches to go, FHSU saw its lead shrink at 197 pounds as No. 2 Kenny Breaux (LWU) defeat FHSU’s Cash Drylie by decision, 7-3. Trailing 3-1 after the second, Drylie picked up a third period escape but couldn’t complete the comeback as Breaux sealed the win with a takedown inside a minute to go.

No. 6 Trey Page continued with his winning ways at 285 pounds, picking up his 17th consecutive victory with a 4-0 decision against Jacob Borgmeyer (LWU). Page picked up an early escape before scoring a takedown inside 30 seconds to go in the second, taking a 3-0 lead.  In the third, Page was granted a stalling point and hung on for the victory, sending the Tigers to the final two matches with a five-point lead, 15-11.

With two matches to go, FHSU looked to put the match away at 125 pounds, but fifth-ranked Marco Tamayo (LWU) scored a third period escape to narrowly defeat the Tigers’ Adam Ludwin by decision, 3-2.

It was winner-take-all at 133 pounds, as FHSU held a one-point lead over the Lions with Garrett Jones (FHSU) taking on Hunter Haralson.  Though the match was scoreless through the first two periods, Haralson’s two minutes of riding time gave Lindenwood the advantage headed into the final period.  Jones couldn’t pull off a takedown in the third, dropping a 1-0 decision.

Complete results of Sunday’s dual are below…

141 – Noah Killip (FHSU) wins by decision (9-5) over No. 2 Kyle Webb (LWU) … FHSU leads 3-0
