Harbaugh takes reins at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Jim Harbaugh says he has landed his dream job. Just a few days after parting company with the San Francisco 49ers, Harbaugh has been named head coach at his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

The 51-year-old spent part of his youth in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as his father served as an assistant coach for the team.

Ravens security director charged with sex offense

BALTIMORE (AP) — Court records show the security director of the Baltimore Ravens has been charged with a sex offense and is due in court in February.

Online court records for Baltimore City District Court on Tuesday night showed Darren Sanders was charged with fourth-degree sexual offense, related to an incident that occurred Dec. 14.

The summons issued Tuesday lists Sanders’ address as that of the Ravens’ team headquarters in Owings Mills, Maryland. The record shows a hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 9.

The record did not give more specifics on the charge or other details about the case.

News of the summons was first reported by the Baltimore Sun.

Oubre Jr. helps No. 13 Kansas beat Kent State

LAWRENCE, Kansas (AP) – Freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 20 point and Perry Ellis added 15 to help No. 13 Kansas beat Kent State 78-62 on Tuesday night.

Jimmy Hall scored 13 points and eight rebounds, and Khaliq Spicer added 11 points and five rebounds for Kent State (8-4).

Blunders and bloopers were evident early for Kansas (10-2). On the first possession of the game, Oubre turned the ball over. Wayne Selden Jr. missed a dunk. The entire team ended up on the floor going after a loose ball.

Everyone but Oubre had shooting woes. Excluding the freshman’s perfect first half where he made all six shots, Kansas was 10 of 30.

When the Golden Flashes were called for a foul, the Jayhawks only made 3 of 8 free throws. Kent State wasn’t any better. They only shot 25 percent from the line.

Royals announce deal with right-hander Volquez

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have announced the signing of right-hander Edinson Volquez to a $20 million, two-year contract that includes a mutual option for the 2017 season.

Volquez will make $7.5 million in 2015 and $9.5 million in 2016 under the deal announced Monday. His option year is worth $10 million with a $3 million buyout.

Volquez fills the last big hole by taking James Shields’ spot in the rotation. Shields became a free agent and it was unlikely the Royals would be able to keep him.

The Royals have already signed designated hitter Kendrys Morales and outfielder Alex Rios to fill two of their other pressing needs. They also signed pitcher Kris Medlen, who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and could help contribute midway through the season.

Buzzer-beater lifts Texas Southern to win over Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Jason Carter hit a jumper as time expired to give Texas Southern a 58-56 win over Kansas State on Sunday.

A three-point play by Thomas Gipson and a layup by Marcus Foster gave Kansas State (8-4) a 54-48 lead with 1:45 remaining.

Chris Thomas made a layup to pull Texas Southern (3-9) within four. After Gipson made a free throw, a layup by Madarious Gibbs made it 55-52 with 16 seconds left.

A free throw by Nino Williams pushed the Kansas State lead back to four. Tonnie Collier made the first two of three free throws and Thomas putback the third to tie the game at 56 with .9 seconds to play.

After Jevon Thomas threw the inbounds pass away, Texas Southern got the ball out of bounds, setting up Carter’s winner.

Kansas State made 2 of 8 free throws in the final 69 seconds.

Thomas and Gibbs scored 15 apiece for Texas Southern.

Chiefs beat Chargers 19-7; miss playoffs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs beat San Diego 19-7 on Sunday to eliminate the Chargers from playoff contention, moments before they were eliminated themselves by games happening elsewhere.

The Chiefs needed Cleveland to beat Baltimore and Jacksonville to beat Houston, and neither of those outcomes transpired.

The Ravens wound up with the AFC’s final playoff spot.

San Diego (9-7) needed merely to beat Kansas City (9-7) to reach the postseason.

Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston piled up four sacks to finish with 22 on the season, breaking Derrick Thomas’s franchise record, and Cairo Santos had four field goals.

The Chargers’ Philip Rivers threw for 291 yards, but was picked off twice. Branden Oliver ran for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith out with lacerated spleen

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will miss Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers because of a lacerated spleen.

Team trainer Rick Burkholder said Friday that Smith was hurt on a hit during the third quarter of last weekend’s loss to the Steelers, but the injury was not initially obvious.

Smith will not need surgery.

If the Chargers beat Kansas City on Sunday, they make the playoffs. The Chiefs would need to win and have Baltimore and Houston lose to earn a postseason berth.

HONOLULU (AP) – Darius Carter was a force inside with 12 points and eight rebounds, and No. 11 Wichita State had no trouble Monday night in an 80-53 victory over Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals of the Diamond Head Classic.

The Shockers (9-1) used 14-0 runs early in the first and second periods to seize control of a game that was a mismatch from the start. The Lions (3-7) lost their fifth straight.

Carter had six offensive rebounds in limited playing time because of the rout. He even dropped in a rare 3-pointer during the second big run by the Shockers. Tekele Cotton carried them early and had 12 points.

Wichita State emptied its bench with more than 10 minutes remaining.

Evan Payne led Loyola Marymount with 15 points.

#10 Jayhawks Blown Out At Temple

By DAVE ZEITLIN
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Will Cummings scored 19 points, Quenton DeCosey had 18 and Temple stunned No. 10 Kansas with a 77-52 rout Monday night that snapped the Jayhawks’ eight-game winning streak.

Jesse Morgan added 17 points and keyed a dominant second-half performance from the Owls, who were swallowed up after the game by a sea of Temple fans rushing the court at the Wells Fargo Center, home of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

Frank Mason III scored 20 points for Kansas (9-2), which shot 32.7 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers.

No one else on the Jayhawks hit double figures, and leading scorer Perry Ellis was held to five points on 1-for-10 shooting.

The Owls (8-4), who have won four of their last five, shot a blistering 58.3 percent from the field to beat a ranked opponent for the first time this season.
