Chiefs Lose 20-12 At Pittsburgh

By WILL GRAVES
AP Sports Writer

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Ben Roethlisberger passed for 220 yards and a touchdown, Le’Veon Bell added a score and the Pittsburgh Steelers locked up a postseason berth with a methodical 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Pittsburgh (10-5) faces Cincinnati next week for the AFC North title. Either way, the Steelers will be playing January football for the first time since Tim Tebow and Denver stunned the defending AFC champions in the wild-card round three years ago.

Antonio Brown caught seven passes and a touchdown for Pittsburgh, which has won seven of nine and can clinch a division title for the first time since 2010 by beating the Bengals next week.

Kansas City’s Alex Smith passed for a season-high 311 yards but was sacked six times. The Chiefs (8-7) have lost four of five and need to beat San Diego next Sunday and receive plenty of help to make it back to the playoffs for a second straight year under coach Andy Reid.

Rally falls short as Tigers lose in overtime at Northwest Missouri State

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Fort Hays State rallied from 13 down with under four minutes to play to force overtime, but Northwest Missouri State outscores them 10-2 in the extra period for a 74-66 win at Bearcat Arena in Maryville. The loss snaps FHSU’s three-game win streak and drops them to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA. The Bearcats improve to 8-2 and 2-1 in conference play.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Northwest led 61-48 with 3:44 to play but FHSU closed the game on a 16-3 run to force overtime. James Fleming’s conventional 3-point play cut the gap to three then Jeremy Wilson hit a 3-pointer with :10 to play to tie the game.

Northwest controlled the overtime, hitting two 3-pointers and hitting all four of their free throws. The Tigers were 0-for-9 in the extra period.

Game Highlights

Craig Nicholson led four Tigers in double-figures with 16 points before fouling out late in regulation. James Fleming added 12 while Dom Samac and Jeremy Wilson both scored 11.

Northwest was led by redshirt freshman Justin Pitts who scored a game-high 19.

The Tigers are off until January 3rd when they host Missouri Southern.

Tony Hobson Postgame Interview

After a back and forth first half, the Lady Tigers put together a 9-0 run to build an eight-point lead and led by as many as 11 before settling for an eight-point lead at the break.

GIRL’S HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  TMP 77, Oakley 40

Joe Hertel’s TMP Monarchs wanted to come out and show some strength and toughness tonight and did just that in a 77-40 win over Oakley at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.  It was the first game at “The Pit” since February 15, 2013 and the Monarchs piled on a 10-nothing first quarter run to take the lead for good at 19 to nine.  Oakley was able to close the gap to 19-11 but that was the last time the Plainsmen were within single digits.

Kameron Schmidt led three Monarchs in double figures with 22 points.  10 players were able to score for the Monarchs who have a break until January 9th in Ellis.

FHSU wrestling wins seven individual matches, takes down Colorado School of Mines

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State Wrestling won seven individual matches, scoring 10 bonus points in a 31-15 dual victory over Colorado School of Mines on Thursday, Dec. 18.

FHSU is now 2-0 in dual competition this season, scoring one major decision with two pins on the night.

Adam Ludwin and the Tigers fell behind 3-0 after the 125 pound match, as CSM’s Zachary Gracia took advantage of a strong third period ride to take a 9-8 decision on advantage time.

The Tigers, however, regained the lead soon after with a quick pin from Garrett Jones (133).  Jones picked up a takedown in the match’s first 15 seconds before sticking Caleb Micho in just 33 seconds.

From there, Tyler Dryden (141) came out firing against Jacob Gerken (CSM), taking advantage of two three-point nearfall points in the match for a 12-7 decision, giving the Tigers a six-point lead (9-3) early on.

At 149 pounds, the Tigers’ Ky Biddle took a 4-1 lead over Skyler Lykins (CSM) after the first period, racking up over a minute of riding time after two takedowns.  That lead, however, would reverse itself in the second as Lykins grabbed two takedowns of his own before picking up a third period fall in 6:27, tying the match at 9-all.

Bradley Little (157) used a takedown and nearfall in the second period to take control over CSM’s John Crowley, hanging on late for the 10-8 decision. Late in the second, Little countered a Crowley takedown effort to gain control, adding three points of nearfall in the process.  Crowley’s reversal inside two seconds remaining in the second, however, kept things close (9-7).  In the third, Little picked up an escape before Crowley was awarded a stalling point, but the Tiger grappler held on for the win to put Fort Hays State back in the lead, 12-9.

Bryce Lewis extended the Tigers’ lead at 165 pounds, scoring early and often to win by major decision, 12-4. Just past the midway point of the third, Lewis’ fifth takedown of the match put him up eight (11-3) with over two minutes of riding time to his credit, which came in handy as Ruby scored an escape late in the third.

Nathan Shipley  (174) followed Lewis’ lead, scoring three takedowns with over six minutes of riding time, cruising over the Orediggers’ Karl Beridenbach by decision, 7-1.

Inman’s win by forfeit at 184 pounds sealed the team win for FHSU, giving the team a commanding 25-9 lead with two matches remaining.

Cash Drylie fell victim to a fall at 197 pounds as Paul Wilson scored the Orediggers’ final points of the night, pinning the Tigers’ junior in 1:25 and cutting the lead to 10, 25-15.

Trey Page (285) continued his recent success on the mat, winning his 16th consecutive match with a pin in 1:46 over CSM’s Nickolas DeBruyn, giving the Tigers the double-digit win, 31-15.

The Tigers idle until the New Year, returning to the mats on Sunday, Jan. 4 to face Lindenwood at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Royals sign Medlin to two-year deal with option

Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, MO – The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Kris Medlen to a two-year contract with a mutual option for the 2017 season. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.  The Royals will announce a corresponding roster move later today.

Medlen, 29, missed the 2014 season, recovering from “Tommy John surgery” after suffering an elbow injury during Spring Training.  In his only full season as a starting pitcher (2013), the righty went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA (68 ER in 197.0 IP), with his 15 victories tied for sixth-most in the National League.  He finished the 2013 season with a flurry, earning N.L. Pitcher of the Month honors in September, posting a 4-0 mark with a 1.00 ERA and a .197 opponents average in his last five starts.  He dropped a 2-0 decision at Philadelphia on April 4, 2013, which snapped a Major League record of 23 consecutive regular season starts that the Braves won, dating back to May 23, 2010.

Medlen has been used as a both a starter and reliever during his time with the Braves, going 34-20 with a 2.95 ERA in 152 career appearances and 61 starts.  He opened the 2012 season in the bullpen, but was moved to the rotation on July 31, and went 9-0 with an 0.97 ERA in his 12 starts. He became the first Braves pitcher to post a sub-1.00 ERA and post at least eight victories in his first 10 starts of the season.  Since the beginning of 2010, Medlen’s .674 winning percentage (31-15) ranks third behind Clayton Kershaw (.702) and Max Scherzer (.701) among pitchers with at least 40 decisions.

A native of Artesia, Calif., Medlen was selected by Atlanta in the 10th round of the 2006 June Free Agent Draft.  He resides in Duluth, Ga., with his wife, Nicole, son, Max and newborn daughter, Penelope.
