Chelsea Mason scored 16 for FHSU with Jill Faxon adding nine and Payton Hoeme eight. FHSU never trialed, scoring the first eight points in building a 48-19 halftime lead. The 50-point margin was their biggest lead of the game.

Game Highlights

HSU shot 47-percent from the floor while holding MVC to 25-percent. The Lady Tigers out-rebound the Vikings 58-36. They turn the ball over just eight times and have 24 assists, five from Beth Bohuslavsky.

No. 10 Kansas holds off No. 13 Utah

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Perry Ellis scored 14 points, including the go-ahead basket in the closing minutes, and No. 10 Kansas held on after blowing a 21-point second-half lead to beat No. 13 Utah 63-60 on Saturday.

Jamari Traylor added 13 points and Frank Mason III had 10 for the Jayhawks (8-1), who led 42-21 early in the second half before the Utes (7-2) stormed back to take the lead.

Jakob Poeltl’s basket with 4:38 left gave Utah a 55-53 lead, but Mason scored on a driving layup moments later to knot the game. Ellis then swooped through the lane and converted a floater for his only field-goal of the second half to give the Jayhawks the lead back.

Kansas made six straight free throws down the stretch, including two by Brannen Greene with 13.7 seconds left. Utah never got a good look at tying it, settling for an off-balance 3 from 7-foot Poeltl from the corner that was partially blocked.

Delon Wright finished with 23 points for the Utes, who nearly dealt the Jayhawks’ the worst blown lead in a loss in school history. Kansas blew a 20-point lead in losing to Arizona in 2003.

No. 11 Wichita State rallies past Detroit

By NOAH TRISTER
AP Sports Writer

DETROIT (AP) — Darius Carter had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 11 Wichita State rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to beat Detroit 77-68 on Saturday.

Ron Baker added 19 points for the Shockers (7-1), who went on a decisive 15-3 run in the final minutes. The Titans (6-4) fell short in their upset bid despite a 27-point performance by Juwan Howard Jr.

Carter had five of Wichita State’s 18 offensive rebounds. The Shockers eventually wore Detroit down with their rebounding and defensive pressure.

Wichita State has won three in a row since a Dec. 3 loss at Utah that snapped its 35-game regular-season winning streak.

Baker missed nine 3-pointers in a row at one point Saturday, but he ended that dry spell with a shot from beyond the arc that put the Shockers ahead 68-62.

Fred VanVleet had 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Wichita State.

Hays High Sweeps Colby

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians took their first road test in swing on Thursday night as both the boys and girls win.

Girls
Hays 39 – Colby 35

For the second time this season, the Hays High High Lady Indians beat Colby by four points. Hays previously beat Colby in the consolation semi-finals of the Hays City Shootout. Thursday night, Hays held a 6-5 lead after the first quarter and led 14-10 with just a minute to go until half time. That is when Brenly Terrell hit her third and fourth three pointer of the first half to give Colby a 16-14 lead at half time.

Colby opened up their biggest lead of the game at 23-19 midway through the third quarter, but Hays closed the quarter on a 10-0 run and then added a free throw to start the fourth quarter to take a 30-23 lead. Colby though fought back to force tie scores at 32 and 34. The Lady Eagles took their last lead of the game with a free throw at the 2:26 mark. Hays scored the games last five points off of the game capped with two Summer Smith free throws with thirteen seconds left to secure the win.

Hays was led in scoring by Haley George who was in the double figures for the first time in her career, scoring 10. Hays shot 38% from the field while improving to 2-3 on the year. Colby shot just 29% and committed 33 turnovers and fell to 0-4.

Boys
Hays 79 – Colby 27

It could have been a trap game for Hays. The 3rd ranked team in class 4A-1, playing their fifth game in eight days, went on the road for the first time to take a win less Colby squad that hadn’t played since Saturday. The game was close for the first two minutes as Hays held a 5-4 lead. Hays though found a rhythm on offense and clamped down on defense, using a 16-2 run to grab a 21-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. In that first quarter Keith Dryden scored nine on two three pointers and a three point play. Brady Werth scored five in the first, including an emphatic dunk in which he was fouled and hit the free throw.

The Indians would runs of 10-3, 13-1, 12-0 and 10-0 in taking a fifty point lead to the fourth quarter at 68-18. The fourth quarter was continuous clock and Hays walked away with a 79-27 victory.

Hays shot 55% from the field and made 6 of 18 threes. The Indians free throw shooting continued to signs of improvement, making 13 of 15 on Thursday night. Colby made just 21% of their shots, 1 of 11 three pointers and 6 of 9 free throws. Colby also committed 28 turnovers to the Indian’s 12.

Dryden led the way for Hays scoring a career high 26, coming off his 22 versus Pratt on Tuesday. Werth collected his 10 career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Nunnery scored 11 in the victory.

Hays improves to 4-1 on the year. Colby drops to 0-3.

The Indians are back at home on Tuesday to play Junction City.

Morales, Royals reach $17M, 2-year deal

By RONALD BLUM
AP Sports Writer

SAN DIEGO (AP) – A person familiar with the negotiations says slugger Kendrys Morales and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a $17 million, two-year contract.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the agreement with the AL champions was subject to him passing a physical.

Morales figures to take over at designated hitter from Billy Butler, who left as a free agent and agreed to a $30 million, three-year deal with Oakland.

Morales will get $6.5 million next year and $9 million in 2016. The deal includes an $11 million mutual option for 2017 with a $1.5 million buyout. Morales can make an additional $750,000 in performance bonuses in each of the first two seasons based on plate appearances: $50,000 for 375 and $100,000 apiece for 400 and each additional 25 until 550.

Greene helps No. 10 Kansas past Georgetown

By JOSEPH WHITE
AP Sports Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) – Brannen Greene went 5 for 5 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 19 points Wednesday night as No. 10 Kansas made a basketball statement with a 75-70 win over Georgetown, even as Hoyas players were making a societal statement by wearing “I CAN’T BREATHE” T-shirts for the national anthem.

Greene scored 16 in the second half, including two free throws that helped clinch the game in the final minute. Frank Mason added 14 points, and Perry Ellis had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks (7-1), who have won six straight.

Joshua Smith scored 20 points to lead the Hoyas (5-3), whose other losses came against No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 15 Butler.
