Lehman averaged a double-double in points (28.0) and rebounds (11.0) for the week in just 41 total minutes of game action (20.5 minutes per game). She scored 30 points in FHSU’s 120-39 win over McPherson, a game in which FHSU set a school record for points in a single game. Lehman followed up the performance with her first double-double (and just missing a triple-double) of the season, pulling down 14 rebounds to go with 26 points, in addition to eight blocks.

Lehman had at least 20 points in the first half of both games. She shot an impressive 81.5 percent from the field (22-of-27). K-State’s Lockett tabbed Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Kansas State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan.For the seventh time in his career, including the second this season, Kansas State senior wide receiver Tyler Lockett has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the return game at West Virginia, the conference office announced Monday.

Lockett, who was also the league’s special teams player of the week following the UTEP game, garnered the fifth designation for the Wildcats this season. In addition to Lockett’s two nods, Jake Waters earned the offensive honor following the Iowa State game, while Dakorey Johnson and Dante Barnett were the defensive players of the week after the Auburn and Texas games, respectively.

In addition, the honor was the Wildcats’ Big 12-leading 29th weekly conference honor since the beginning of 2011.

A product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lockett totaled 321 all-purpose yards, thanks to a pair of punt returns for 66 yards – including a 43-yard touchdown – three kickoff returns for 59 yards and 196 receiving yards on 10 catches. The nation’s leader with a 20.5-yard punt return average, Lockett’s touchdown return was his second of the year to rank second nationally and tied for third in school history.

Lockett now has 328 total punt return yards this season and 414 for his career to rank 10th in school history in both categories. Additionally, Lockett has 1,669 all-purpose yards this season to rank ninth in K-State history.

Lockett’s 196 receiving yards put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the second-straight season, becoming just the second Wildcat ever to accomplish the feat. He improved his school career receiving yardage record to 3,269 and his school record for career 100-yard games to 14. With 213 career receptions, he is now four away from tying his father, Kevin, for the most in school history, while he is two touchdowns shy of tying that K-State career record as well.

No. 23 FHSU men’s soccer loses to Quincy in NCAA II Quarterfinals

FHSU Athletics

No. 23 Fort Hays State saw its NCAA Men’s Soccer Championships run come to an end on Sunday, Nov. 23 in the NCAA Quarterfinals, dropping a 3-2 contest to Quincy in Tahlequah, Okla.

FHSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half of the Super Region 3 Final, but couldn’t hold on as Quincy sent off 22 shots (compared to FHSU’s 10) in the game.  FHSU had seven shots on goal, while QU had 12 shots on goal.

Michael Cole got things started for the Tigers in the 21st minute, giving FHSU a 1-0 lead at 20:03. Maurizio Costa traveled down the right side of the box before finding a slot with his pass into the box, where Cole waited to put it away from 10 yards out.   The goal was Cole’s seventh of the season and his second of the NCAA Tournament.

Just 1:25 later, Cole again made an impact on the game by assisting in Austin Clifton’s sixth goal of the year. Inside the box on the left side, Cole hit a low cross to Clifton mid-box, where a one-touch from Clifton sent the Tigers to a 2-0 advantage.

Quincy fought for an answer over the final 25 minutes of the first half, firing eight shots and controlling the ball for a majority of the time.  FHSU’s defense, however, was up to the task and stuffed several runs late to hold the Hawks at bay.  Inside the final minute, QU launched four shots (including one off the post) and had two corner kicks, but the Tigers hung on and set the game to half, up 2-0.

In the 54th minute, QU again had a chance, but strong play from keeper Kent Freund kept the shutout intact.  The Hawks’ Artan Emini took two shots inside the box, but diving stops from Freund on both attempts left QU empty.

The Tigers’ shutout, however, came to an end soon after on Ethan Venvertloh’s seventh goal of the season.  Venvertloh took a cross from Jake Bond inside the box at 54:16 and headed it past Freund, cutting the deficit to one (2-1) with just over 35 minutes to play in regulation.

FHSU found itself all square with QU soon after, when Jordan Roberts settled himself near the far post, waiting for a cross from Pete Condol.  Once there, Roberts’ header was on target for the equalizer in the 62nd minute.

In the 83rd, Quincy completed the comeback to take a 3-2 lead.  Xhovani Dokaj took a thru ball from Steve McAnany, countering an FHSU attack and sent it past Freund from the top of the box.

Needing a goal to force overtime, FHSU pushed to find the answer in the final seven minutes, but couldn’t overcome QU’s three second half goals and fell in regulation.

Costa led the team with three shots (all on goal) for the afternoon, while Freund came up with nines saves on the day.

The Tigers finish the year 11-6-4 after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and say goodbye to a senior class that helped build the program from scratch. Tanner Brock, Diego Cabral, Freund, Eric Hymer and Carlos Linares were part of the program’s inception in 2011, and will leave Fort Hays State with a 45-22-11 record of the first four years.

QU advances as the Super Region 3 Champions to the NCAA Championships Final Four in Louisville, Ky., held Dec. 4-6.

No. 23 FHSU men’s soccer advances to Elite Eight after shootout with Northeastern State

FHSU Athletics

No. 23 Fort Hays State drew with No. 12 Northeastern State, 1-1, on Friday evening in the NCAA Championship, but advanced with a 3-2 penalty kick advantage in a shootout.

The Tigers (11-5-4) advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships on Sunday, Nov. 23, where they will face off with No. 5 Quincy at 2 p.m. from DeLoache Field.

Michael Cole got the scoring started for FHSU in the 50th minute, breaking away from the Northeastern State defense before rifling a shot from the upper left corner of the box.  Cole’s attempt cleared the keeper and found net, giving FHSU a 1-0 lead.

In the 63rd, however, NSU answered.  After a free kick was awarded the RiverHawks, a long cross into the box found Paul Samia, who fired at the net before his shot was deflected by FHSU goalkeeper Kent Freund. The deflection fell into the control of Crosby Lee, who finished on a rebound to the low post.

After 110 minutes of play left the game tied, the teams headed to a shootout where Anthony Hernandez, Maurizio Costa and Diego Cabral hit penalty kicks for the Tigers.

NSU’s first two attempts in the shootout went wide left, and though Tanner Brock’s first attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Jackson Biles, Hernandez’s attempt was good – giving FHSU a 1-0 advantage.  The RiverHawks tied the shootout in the next round, 1-1, after Jordan Schmoker hit on his attempt (and Biles again came up with a save on Mauricio Castorino’s turn) before grabbing a 2-1 advantage on Juan Peralta’s goal.

Costa answered Peralta with a make of his own, setting up the fifth round of PK’s, tied 2-2. Kent Freund made his mark in the shootout on Ricardo Palomino’s shot, diving to his left to stop Palomino’s shot and giving FHSU a chance to clinch – which Cabral did, putting it past the keeper for the 3-2 shootout victory.

Freund had four saves on the day, playing all 120 minutes while helping the Tigers advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history.

Cole and Castorino led the team with two shots for the day, as Cole had FHSU’s only shot on goal.

Fort Hays State and Northeastern State remained even in the series history, moving the overall record to 3-3-5 in 11 matches between the teams in the last four years.

Quincy reached the Elite Eight with a 3-0 victory over Saginaw Valley State in the first game of Friday’s action.

Changes in the FHSU football coaching staff

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

After finishing next to last in the MIAA in total offense and seventh in scoring, Fort Hays State head football coach Chris Brown is making a change in his coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Justin Schreiber and offensive line coach Justin Iske will not return next season. Both had been on Brown’s staff for four years.

“We had some philosophical differences between me and our offensive coaching staff, ” Brown said. “I just feel like for us to take the next step in our program it was time to make a change.”

Fort Hays State averaged 312 yards of total offense per game this season while scoring 24.1 points per game.

Fort Hays State posted the openings on the NCAA web site Thursday. Brown hopes to have the two spots filled as soon as possible.
