Knights seek third state title in matchup with Argonia-Attica

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post

The Victoria Knights are looking for their third 8-man state championship and six in school history when they take on the Argonia-Attica Titans Saturday afternoon Newton.

After dropping their first game of the season, the Knights have won 11 straight games, including last Friday’s 28-12 over Wallace County.

Argonia-Attica is in the second year of a co-op, and the Titans are riding a 14-game winning streak going back to last season. They are the only unbeaten team remaining in the 8-man Division 2 ranks.

Saturday’s game is truly a battle of strength-on-strength as Argonia-Attica is the top scoring team in all of 8-man with 751 points, just nine shy of tying the single season record of 760 set by Osborne last year.

The Knights rank in the top 10 in the fewest points allowed on the season and is giving up less than 250 yards per game.

Both teams’ offenses rely heavily on their junior quarterbacks.

Victoria’s Brady Dinkel has thrown for more than 990 yards and rushed for more than 930 yards and combined for 35 total touchdowns this season.

In the playoffs, Dinkel has 14 total touchdowns.

The Titians’ quarterback Alec McDaniel has thrown for 1,577 yards and rushed for another 1,540 yards and scored 67 total touchdowns.

Victoria is playing in its first state championship game since 2008 and looking for the programs first championship since 2006.

Attica is making its second trip to the state championship game in school history; winning the title in 1988.

Argonia has never played in a state championship game.

Saturday’s kickoff is at 11 a.m. from Fisher Field in Newton with the pregame show beginning at 10:30 a.m. on 99.5 KHAZ and online at HaysPost.com.

Raiders snap 16-game skid with win over Chiefs

By JOSH DUBOW

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Derek Carr threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to James Jones with 1:42 remaining and the Oakland Raiders snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 24-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Oakland’s Latavius Murray ran for two touchdowns on four carries before leaving the game with a concussion.

The Raiders (1-10) built a 14-point lead, but needed a 17-play, 80-yard drive led by Carr to secure its first win since beating Houston on Nov. 17, 2013.

Alex Smith threw two TD passes for the Chiefs (7-4), who had won five in a row. They fell a half-game behind Denver in the AFC West.

No. 12 Kansas State beats West Virginia

By JOHN RABY
AP Sports Writer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Jake Waters threw for a career-high 400 yards and a touchdown, Tyler Lockett returned a punt for a score and No. 12 Kansas State held on to beat sloppy West Virginia 26-20 on Thursday night.

Kansas State (8-2, 6-1 Big 12, No. 12 CFP) rebounded from a loss at TCU to move into a first-place tie with the idle Horned Frogs with two weeks left in the regular season.

Waters was 22-of-34 passing. Lockett caught 10 passes for 196 yards, and Matthew McCrane kicked four field goals.

The Mountaineers (6-5, 4-4) have lost three straight after winning four in a row. West Virginia committed four turnovers, with two of them occurring inside the Kansas State 30, and Josh Lambert missed a 40-yard field goal try.

West Virginia’s Skyler Howard threw two touchdown passes after Clint Trickett left with what coach Dana Holgorsen said was a concussion. Trickett didn’t return after throwing his second interception in the third quarter. Trickett has now gone 10 consecutive quarters without a TD pass.

Lockett returned a punt 43 yards just before halftime to put the Wildcats ahead 17-3. West Virginia punter Nick O’Toole was supposed to kick the ball to the right, but Lockett fielded the ball on the other side of the field and scored untouched.

Howard rallied the Mountaineers on his first series, running 16 yards to set up his 7-yard TD toss to Kevin White that trimmed the Wildcats’ lead to 23-10 midway through the third quarter.

Howard engineered a 17-play drive on the next series, but West Virginia turned it over on downs at the Kansas State 26.

After McCrane missed a 22-yard field goal, Howard hit Mario Alford with a short pass, and he went 53 yards untouched to make it 23-17 with 7:23 left in the fourth quarter.

But Michael Molinari’s ensuing kickoff went out of bounds. Waters hit Lockett across the middle for 28 yards to the West Virginia 25 and McCrane’s fourth field goal made it a two-possession game.

Lambert made a 25-yard field goal with 53 seconds left. West Virginia then tried an onside kick that Kansas State’s Glenn Gronkowski recovered.

Waters was Kansas State’s only hope on offense. The Wildcats ran 29 times for 1 yard. Kansas State used a big pass play to set up its first two scores.

Kody Cook’s 32-yard grab on Kansas State’s first drive set up Waters’ 7-yard scoring toss to DeMarcus Robinson, and tight end Zach Trujillo’s 49-yard catch led to a 36-yard field goal early in the second quarter. It was Trujillo’s longest reception of the season.

Before Lambert’s miss, White appeared to score on a 22-yard reception that deflected off two other players, but the play was ruled an incompletion because the ball touched the ground as Kansas State’s Dante Barnett tried to come up with it.

The Wildcats also came up empty after Randall Evans interception when West Virginia’s Kyle Rose blocked McCrary’s 34-yard field goal try as the first half expired.

Fort Hays State men’s basketball coach Mark Johnson announced the signing of Kyler Kinnamon of McPherson, Kan., for the 2015-16 season. Kinnamon joins three other Kansas high school recruits that signed with the Tigers in the early signing period.

Kinnamon is currently a senior at McPherson High School. The 5-foot, 10-inch guard was named to the Topeka Capital Journal All-State Team, tabbed as one of the top five players in the state of Kansas for the 2013-14 season as a junior. He is a two-time all-state first team selection in Class 4A. He holds the top two single-season assist marks at McPherson High School, a school with a very rich basketball tradition.

Four very talented high school players have now signed with the Tigers in the early period. Kinnamon joins Trey O’Neil of Scott Community High School, Brady Werth of Hays High School, and Aaron Nicholson of Derby High School as early signees.

“We are very excited to have Kyler sign with our program,” said head coach Mark Johnson. “He is a tough and intelligent player that has a great feel for the game, while also excelling in the classroom. Flagor led the Tigers with 348 kills on the season, starting 27 matches and playing in 29 for the team.  A junior, Flagor averaged a career-high 3.16 kills per set in the 2014 campaign, shattering her previous total kills high for a single-season by over 100 (she had 243 in 2013).  Among outside hitters, Flagor was the Tigers’ leader with a .245 hitting percentage.  On the defensive side of the net, the Hoisington, Kan. native had 69 blocks for the season (five solo), averaging 0.63 blocks per set.  For the season, Flagor had double-digit kills in 21 matches, including a string of 13 straight with over 10 kills in the first month of the season.  Her career-high in kills came on Sept. 5 against Southeastern Oklahoma State. No. 1 Kentucky shuts down No. 5 Kansas

By MICHAEL MAROT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Dakari Johnson scored 11 points, Andrew Harrison had 10 and No. 1 Kentucky used a dominant defense to blow out No. 4 Kansas 72-40 in Tuesday night’s Champions Classic.

Kansas Athletics
Kansas Athletics

The Wildcats (3-0) shot just 43.1 percent from the field, but they were so good on defense that it didn’t matter. Kansas (1-1) shot just 19.6 percent from the field and was 15 for 27 at the line in the storied program’s worst offensive performance since a 61-45 loss to Kentucky on Dec. 1, 1998.

Wayne Selden Jr. had nine points for the Jayhawks, and Cliff Alexander finished with eight.

The Wildcats led by as much as 35-17 in the first half. After Kansas closed to 38-28 at the half, Kentucky opened the second half with six straight points and continued extending the lead throughout the second half.

Kentucky has now won its first three games by 40, 19 and 32 points. But Tuesday’s victory was easily the most impressive of the three and helped reinforce the image that last season’s national championship runner-ups could be good enough to go undefeated this season. The last men’s team with a perfect season was Indiana in 1975-76.

The Jayhawks shot just 24.2 percent in the first half. They were nearly twice as bad in the second half, when they made only 3 of 23 shots — 13.0 percent.

And the Wildcats never let up. After extending the lead to 55-36 with 10:28 to go, Kentucky went on a 9-0 run to make it 64-36. Kansas didn’t even crack the 40-point mark until the final minutes.

Kansas had only been held to fewer than 50 points one other time during coach Bill Self’s tenure — a 61-49 loss to Arizona on Nov. 21, 2005.

TIP-INS

Kentucky: The Wildcats now have a 16-game lead over second-place Kansas for the most wins in college basketball. Kentucky has 2,143 all-time wins and has won in three different buildings in downtown Indianapolis — the RCA Dome, Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Kansas: The Jayhawks may argue for a different draw in next year’s classic draw. They lost to Kentucky in this event in 2011 and to the Wildcats in the 2012 national championship game.

Billy Butler and A’s reach 3-year deal

By JANIE McCAULEY
AP Baseball Writer
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – A person with knowledge of the negotiations says free agent designated hitter Billy Butler and the Oakland Athletics have agreed to a $30 million, three-year contract.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the A’s had not announced the deal, their typical practice until a new player passes a physical. Butler would provide a right-handed bat with power who can also play first base.

Butler helped the Kansas City Royals reach the World Series last month after a 29-year playoff drought. In the postseason opener, they rallied late to eliminate Oakland in the AL wild-card game.

After losing to the San Francisco Giants in seven games, the Royals declined their $12.5 million option on Butler for next season, making the 2012 All-Star a free agent for the first time in his eight-year career.

No. 11 Wichita State tops Memphis

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Ron Baker scored 21 points to lead No. 11 Wichita State to a 71-56 win Tuesday over Memphis, pushing the Shockers regular-season win streak to a nation-leading 33 games.

Fred VanVleet had 15 points and Darius Carter added 12 for the Shockers (2-0).

The Tigers were led by Nick King’s 16 points. Austin Nichols and Avery Woodson added 10 each.

Wichita State led 39-22 at half, holding the Tigers to a 5-for-21 shooting from the field while forcing 14 turnovers. The Shockers had a 15-2 run early in the second half, capping it with Baker’s 3-pointer with 13:43 to play to give Wichita State a 47-31 lead.

The neutral-site game at the Sanford Pentagon was the first of the season for the Tigers and the second for the Shockers, who defeated New Mexico State 71-54 on Nov. 14.
