Three Royals honored with Rawlings Gold Gloves for second straight season

Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, MO – Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc., and ESPN2 announced tonight that  three Kansas City Royals – left fielder Alex Gordon, first baseman Eric Hosmer and catcher Salvador Perez – have won American League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards for the second-straight season.  The three Rawlings Gold Glove winners are tied for the most in team history after all three players were honored with the awards in 2013.  The Royals’ three Rawlings Gold Glove winners were tied for the Major League lead with the Baltimore Orioles’ three selections.

The awards were voted on by American League managers and coaches and honor the best individual fielding performances at each position in the American and National Leagues.  Shortstop Alcides Escobar was also named a finalist for the award.

Gordon picked up his fourth-straight Rawlings Gold Glove Award, which is the longest active streak in the American League and second-longest in the Majors behind St. Louis’ Yadier Molina, who earned his seventh-straight award tonight.  He is the second Royals player to win a Gold Glove in four consecutive years, joining Frank White, who won six-straight (1977-82) and eight overall.  Gordon tied for 11th in the American League with eight outfield assists this season, while his 62 assists since the start of 2011 are the most in the Major Leagues in that span.  He led all A.L. outfielders in games (156) and innings (1372.2) for the second-straight year and finished sixth in putouts (341) and committed just two errors in 351 chances for a .994 fielding percentage.  Gordon, a former third baseman, earned his first career Rawlings Gold Glove in 2011, his first full season in the outfield.

Hosmer earned his second-straight Rawlings Gold Glove and the first American League first sacker to win in back-to-back years since Mark Teixeira did it with the Yankees in 2009-10.  He is the only Royals first baseman to be honored with a Gold Glove.  The 25-year-old missed a month of the season with a broken hand, but still played the second-most games at first base (130) in the American League and also finished second in total chances (1141), putouts (1043), assists (88) and fourth in zone rating (.854).

Perez also earned back-to-back Rawlings Gold Glove honors, becoming the fourth-straight American League catcher to win the award in at least two consecutive years, joining Ivan Rodriguez (2006-07), Joe Mauer (2008-10) and Matt Wieters (2011-12).  He and Bob Boone (1989) are the only Royals catchers to win the award.  Salvy set a club record, playing 146 games behind the plate during the regular season, while his 161 games including the postseason were the most ever by a Major League catcher.  He led the American League in catcher pickoffs (four) with his 13 career picks tied for fourth among active MLB backstops.  An All-Star for the second-straight year, Perez also ranked second in the A.L. in putouts (1037), third in assists (72) and fifth in runners caught stealing (23) this season.

The trio of winners gives the Royals 26 Rawlings Gold Gloves honorees in franchise history, with 12 different players honored.  Below is a list of the 26 Royals’ Rawlings Gold Glove winners:

Kansas beats Washburn in basketball exhibition opener

Kansas Athletics

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Thirty minutes in, the big play that Kansas fans await each gameday came through via a Kelly Oubre, Jr. breakaway dunk delivered by a grinning Wayne Selden, Jr. Kansas downed Washburn, 85-53, in the unofficial start to the 2014-15 men’s basketball season Monday night inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Squaring off in exhibition play for the first time since 2012 and the 40th time overall, No. 5 Kansas and Washburn were heartily welcomed by the Allen Fieldhouse crowd, eager to watch the latest edition of the Jayhawks in action. High-octane recruit Cliff Alexander played to his hype, leading the Jayhawks with a game-high-tying 14 points on 6-for-8 accuracy and coming in just one rebound short of a double-double. His three blocks, all in the first half, led his team’s solid defensive effort as the Jayhawks chalked up nine rejections and held the Ichabods under 30 percent shooting.

KU’s other freshman All-American, Oubre was also solid in his debut with nine points, including his thunder dunk inside the 12-minute mark. By night’s end, all 15 Jayhawks checked in and 12 scored en route to a 30-for-53 field-goal performance (56.6 percent). Nine of those came from behind the arc, only one shy of KU’s best three-point total a year ago (10 vs. Iowa State, 1/29/14).

Sophomore guard Frank Mason started the game at point, flanked on either side by Selden and freshman Devonte’ Graham. the only newcomer to crack the starting lineup. All-Big 12 returnee Perry Ellis reclaimed his starting spot, while junior forward Jamari Traylor would have registered his second career start had the game counted.

Mason looked the part at floor general, dishing out a game-high seven assists to just one turnover while turning in 13 points with only one missed shot on the night. Sophomore forward Landon Lucas posted a perfect 4-for-4 show to tally nine points and six rebounds. He, Traylor, Alexander and junior forward Hunter Mickelson all swatted multiple shots in the win.

On the opposing bench, senior guard Korey Fisher tied Alexander for the game’s lead with 14 points. He hit two of Washburn’s three three-pointers on Monday as the Ichabods were held to 3-for-20 from long range.

Senior guard Kyle Wiggins connected on a long jumper to put his team ahead 2-1, but the early lead would be the Ichabods’ last. Selden answered with a three on the other end to fuel an 8-0 run, capped by Graham’s first fastbreak layup as a Jayhawk. Not 15 seconds after he checked in, Alexander turned KU’s run to 12-straight points with back-to-back buckets. Halfway through the opening 20 minutes, Ellis already had a three-pointer to his credit and four of KU’s five freshmen had checked into the game. Like Alexander, Oubre also wasted no time collecting his first basket as he drained a three from the corner in hurry.

The rookies shared their night of firsts with Mickelson, who at long last heard his named called after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. He scored a put-back layup, a turnaround hook shot and blocked a shot to power KU’s lead past the 20-point plateau. Moments later, a three from Mason pushed it over 25 points.

Three minutes remained in the first half when a runner through the lane by Fisher finally put the Ichabods in double-digits. By halftime, KU’s defense had taken its toll, pestering Washburn with seven blocks and five steals. While Kansas shot 52 percent in first frame, the Jayhawks forced the Ichabods to miss 25 of their 30 first-half shots to take a commanding 42-13 lead to the lockerroom.

Scoring was slower to start the second half as nearly five minutes ticked away before free throws from Ellis and Mason saw KU eclipse 50 points. The ‘Svi for Three’ call from the PA announcer rang out for the first of, what the Jayhawk fan base hopes many, times this season after freshman guard Svaitaslav Mykhailiuk connected from three-point territory, and the Jayhawks found themselves ahead by 30 points, 59-29.

Firmly in command, Kansas utilized various lineups for the rest of the night – all of which are likely to appear in the regular season. Graham spent some time in the point guard spot and fired off five late points, before Evan Manning, Tyler Self and Josh Pollard  replaced the backcourt for the final minutes of the 85-53 win.

UP NEXT
Kansas will conclude exhibition play when it plays host to Emporia State on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. (Central) and the game can be seen on Jayhawk IMG Television, ESPN Full Court and ESPN3 outside the state of Kansas. KU will then open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. That contest is also on the Jayhawk IMG Television, ESPN Full Court and ESPN3 outside the state of Kansas.

Royals extend qualifying offer to Shields

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals extended a $15.3 million qualifying offer Monday to right-hander James Shields, which assures Kansas City of draft pick compensation if its staff ace signs a major league contract with another team before June 8.

Shields has until Nov. 10 to accept, and it is expected he will not. In the past two years, none of the 22 free agents given qualifying offers have accepted.

Kansas City has expressed interest in re-signing Shields, who helped the Royals reach the playoffs for the first time in 29 years and win the AL pennant. But with higher-payroll clubs in the market for pitching, Shields is expected to sign elsewhere.

If that happens, the Royals would receive a compensatory draft pick between the first and second rounds of next year’s amateur draft.

FHSU women soccer wins sixth straight

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State women’s soccer posted its best regular season record in program history with a 3-1 win over Washburn on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 2) at FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. The Tigers ran their win streak to six matches and pushed their overall record to 12-4-2. FHSU finished third in the MIAA standings with a mark of 10-2-2.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a winless Ichabod squad early. Just over 18 minutes into the match, Hailey Davey found Kylee Loneker just in front of the net on a crossing pass from the right side. Loneker buried the ball past the goalkeeper to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Nearly 10 minutes later, Loneker returned the favor along with Cenayda Guzman as their consecutive passes found Davey just in front of the net. Davey beat the keeper to make it 2-0.

Washburn cut the lead in half on a goal by Hadyn Hutchinson in the 40th minute, giving the Tigers just a one-goal cushion at halftime.

Moving downwind in the second half, the Tigers extended the lead back to two on a Kelsey Steffens goal at 50:29. Loneker recorded her second assist of the match as she had the ball on the left side of the box and found a charging Steffens at the top of the box who blasted a shot to the low right corner of the goal.

That would be all the goal scoring as the Tigers limited the Ichabods to just one shot in the second half. After the teams were tied 7-7 in shots at halftime, FHSU was able to get off 18 shots downwind in the second half, outshooting Washburn overall 25-8. Goalkeeper Kristen Thompson recorded two saves in the match and saw her record improve to 12-4-2 on the season.

The Tigers secured the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament with the win. FHSU will host No. 6 seed Missouri Western on Wednesday night (Nov. 5) at 6 pm in Hays. The winner will move on to Olathe, Kan., for the semifinals on Friday and then potentially the finals on Sunday. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Central Region rankings and six teams are selected from the region to compete in the NCAA Tournament.

Central Missouri spoils FHSU volleyball Senior Day

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State Volleyball’s Senior Day was spoiled by No. 21 Central Missouri on Sunday (Nov. 2), as the Tigers dropped a 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-17, 25-17) contest to the Jennies.

FHSU is now 13-14 overall on the year, dropping to 7-11 in conference play.

The Tigers were never close in the first set, falling behind 13-1 early, hurt by a -.077 hitting percentage.  UCM grabbed a lead in the match with a 25-12 set win.

After a tough first set, the second set was a different story for FHSU, who opened play with its burst, taking a 5-0 lead with kills from Mallory Flagor and Sara Hewson. After stretching the lead to eight (13-5), FHSU was forced to battle with UCM throughout after the Jennies cut it to three (14-1), though they never relinquished the lead.  Up 18-13, the Tigers allowed one last push by UCM (a 3-0 run) before recovering and taking the set, 25-19.

The third and fourth sets were similar for both teams, as the squads battled for the early portions before late runs by the Jennies put the match away.  In the third set, trailing by two (10-8), FHSU gave up a 4-1 run by UCM that provided separation en route to a 25-17 set win.  The fourth set saw FHSU trailing, 7-9, before a 9-4 run for UCM (with a burst of three unanswered) put the set out of reach as UCM won, 25-17.

Hewson paced the Tigers’ offense, leading the team with 16 kills and posting a double-digit kills performance for the second consecutive evening.  Hewson’s kill count was her highest since Sept. 8, 2012.

Katilin Bradley was second on the team with eight kills, adding 14 digs (also second-highest for FHSU). Keanu Bradley’s35 digs was a career-high, and also marked the second straight 30-plus dig game for the libero.

At the net, Callie Christensen and Rebekah Spainhour each had five blocks.

FHSU closes the 2014 campaign with four road games, beginning Nov. 7 at Missouri Western.

Making his first start with the Jets (1-8), Michael Vick was 21 of 27 for 196 yards and a touchdown. He briefly left in the fourth quarter after taking a massive hit from the Chiefs’ Josh Mauga and walking unsteadily off the field, but eventually returned later in the quarter.
