FHSU women’s basketball falls short in exhibition at Kansas

FHSU Athletics

In its lone exhibition before tipping off the 2014-15 regular season campaign, Fort Hays State fell, 73-52, to Kansas on Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan.

The Tigers hung close with KU for a majority of the first half, trailing by five (26-21) with 7:38 to play.  From there, however, the Jayhawks closed the half on a 17-1 run that put the game out of reach.  FHSU did match KU in scoring for the second half, with each team tallying 30 points.

Coach Tony Hobson Postgame Interview

FHSU hit just 26.8 percent of its field goals on the afternoon, but showed bright spots as Kate Lehman, Jill Faxon and Chelsea Mason all hit double-digits in scoring.

Lehman’s 17 points paced the Tigers, as Faxon had 12 points and Mason added 10 points.  Lehman was 6-of-11 from the field on the night and hit 5-of-10 free throw opportunities, pulling down six rebounds.  Faxon and Mason led the team in field goal attempts, with 19 and 17, respectively.

The team leader on the boards was Paige Lunsford, who grabbed seven total rebounds, four of them coming on the offensive glass. Lunsford’s 30 minutes played led the team as well.

Keriann Shaw provided a spark defensively, leading the team with five steals, while Beth Bohuslavsky added seven assists and seven points in the contest.

Kansas, which reach the second round of the Big 12 Tournament last season, was Chelsea Gardner’s double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds).  Natalie Knight added 11 points as the second-leading scorer.

Fort Hays State heads to St. Paul, Minn., in two weeks for its regular season opener on Nov. 14.  The Tigers will play a two-day event at Concordia-St. Paul on Nov.  14-15, taking on Bemidji State and the Golden Bears.

Late own goal snaps FHSU men’s soccer’s 11-match unbeaten streak

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State saw its 11-match unbeaten streak snapped on Sunday (Nov. 2) as a corner kick deflected off of a Tiger into their own net late, lifting West Texas A&M by a score of 1-0. The 22nd-ranked Tigers completed their regular season with a record of 11-4-3, but the result spoiled Senior Day at a windswept FHSU Soccer Stadium.

Conditions were extremely windy with strong gusts out of the south. The Tigers had the wind with them in the first half and had several good scoring opportunities, but could not find the net. FHSU did a good job of controlling possessions in the second half into the wind, but found itself on the wrong end of an unfortunate break late in the match.

With 5:04 to play in regulation, West Texas A&M’s Vitor Cardoso rifled a corner kick into traffic in front of Fort Hays State’s goal, which deflected off of a Tiger defender and into the goal. It was the fourth-straight match in which FHSU allowed a goal inside of the final seven minutes of regulation. The Tigers have gone 1-1-2 in that stretch, as two of those helped the opponent gain a draw.

Fort Hays State was handed its first loss since September 20, when it lost 2-0 at Southern Nazarene, snapping an 11-match run that saw the Tigers go 9-0-2. West Texas A&M moved to 9-6-1 with the win.

Fort Hays State now turns its focus to the postseason, as it will be the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament in Olathe, Kan. The Tigers take on No. 3 seed Lindenwood Thursday (Nov. 6) at 4 pm in a semifinal match. The other semifinal pits No. 1 seed Northeastern State against No. 4 seed Upper Iowa. FHSU made the championship match of the tournament last year, but lost on penalty kicks to Lindenwood.

The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Central Region rankings and are looking for their third-straight berth into the NCAA Tournament. The top two teams from the region will be selected to the tournament. Northeastern State is currently the No. 1 team in the region.

Balance key in K-State’s win over OSU

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Bill Snyder had watched Oklahoma State slice so effortless through his defense on the game’s opening drive that he wondered whether the tone had been set.

Morgan Burns didn’t give him a chance to think anything more of it.

The speedy cornerback returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and that set the No. 11 Wildcats off and running. Jake Waters threw two TD passes, Charles Jones ran for two more scores and Kansas State routed the Cowboys 48-14 on Saturday night.

”You’ve got a lot of guys, sometimes when that happens, they’re standing around looking at each other like, ‘Wow, what’s going on?’ Snyder said about the opening drive, in which Oklahoma State went 86 yards in just eight plays. ”And it didn’t happen. There wasn’t time for it to happen.”

The rest of the game belonged to the Wildcats.

Curry Sexton had nine catches for 159 yards and a touchdown, and Tyler Lockett had six receptions for 94 yards and a score, helping Kansas State (7-1, 5-0, No. 9 CFP) remain the lone unbeaten team in the Big 12 heading into next week’s showdown at 10th-ranked TCU.

”I know it’s going to be a heck of a matchup, a tough place to play,” Sexton said. ”We’re happy with where we’re at, we’re happy with how we’re playing, but we’re not satisfied.”

After its opening touchdown drive Oklahoma State (5-4, 3-3) never threatened on offense again. The Cowboys managed only a pick-six by Ramon Richards in the fourth quarter in losing their third straight game for the first time since the 2005 season.

Tyreek Hill had 102 yards rushing and a touchdown in place of leading rusher Desmond Roland, who missed the trip following a death in his family. Daxx Garman threw for 148 yards and was picked off twice, one of them when the Cowboys were deep in Kansas State territory.

Oklahoma State had only 48 yards of offense in the second half.

”We worked our butt off the first 5 minutes to get a 7-0 lead on the road and quiet the stadium,” Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said. ”We turn around and in 10 seconds we give up a return for a touchdown. That’s the way it has gone for us this year.”

The Wildcats have won five straight since a narrow loss to fourth-ranked Auburn, but the schedule is about to get a lot tougher. After visiting the Horned Frogs, Kansas State must travel to No. 20 West Virginia, with a game at No. 12 Baylor looming at the end of the season.

In other words, the road to college football’s inaugural playoff is a bumpy one.

”This next week, that’s all we have in mind right now,” Snyder said.

After the Cowboys and Wildcats traded touchdowns in the opening minutes of the game, Kansas State put things away with 38 unanswered points spanning halftime.

Jones started the onslaught with his first touchdown run, and Waters connected with Sexton for a 17-yard score early in the second quarter. Waters then hit Lockett from 20 yards out in the third quarter, giving Kansas State a 28-7 advantage.

On that drive, Lockett passed current Packers star Jordy Nelson for second in school history in yards receiving, and tied Quincy Morgan in career touchdown catches. Lockett has 2,877 yards and 23 TD grabs, trailing only father Kevin Lockett (3,032 yards, 26 TDs) in both categories.

”It means a lot,” Lockett said, ”but I’m just going to keep playing.”

The game truly got out of hand when the Cowboys fumbled on their next possession, and Kansas State needed three plays to go 37 yards for a score. Backup quarterback Joe Hubener added a sneak with 9 1/2 minutes to go make it 45-7, and Matt McCrane’s career-long 53-yard field goal in the final minutes gave the few fans left one last reason to cheer.

Now, the attention turns to the Horned Frogs and a pivotal game in the Big 12 race – not to mention the race for one of the four spots in the playoffs.

”I thought we showed signs of clicking on all cylinders,” said Waters, who hasn’t committed a turnover in his last five games, ”but we still have work to do.”

FHSU volleyball defeats Lindenwood, Ties school record for MIAA wins

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State needed five game, but picked up a 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 15-8) win over Lindenwood on Saturday (Nov. 1) evening.

The win moved FHSU (13-13, 7-10 MIAA) back to .500 overall, and tied the Tigers’ previous school record for conference wins as members of the MIAA.  FHSU had seven conference wins in 2012 (the previous record).  Additionally, the victory was the first over Lindenwood for head coach Kurt Kohler.

FHSU controlled the first two sets, cruising to a 2-0 lead before dropping the next two sets.

In the first, tied 6-6, FHSU rolled to three quick points (9-6), pulling away for good.  Soon after, FHSU stretched the lead to five (19-14).  The Lions shrunk the lead back to three (20-17), but FHSU hung on, ending the set, 25-18, on a service ace from Teresa Wade.

The Tigers took a 5-2 lead in the second set and never looked back, though LWU stayed close.  Throughout the set, FHSU put together one 4-0 run, one 3-0 run and four stretches of two quick unanswered points to remain in control.  Leading 20-17, a kill from Mallory Flagor started FHSU’s final run of the second set (3-0) that moved them to within two of set point, 23-17.  Though LWU climbed back to three (24-21), an attack error gave FHSU the set, 25-21.

Out of the intermission, the Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead, stretching it to seven (9-2) soon after.  LWU, however, recovered to tie it, 13-all.  The teams traded points until 21-21 before two points for LWU gave the visitors breathing room.  FHSU dropped the set, 25-23.

The teams were again even throughout the fourth set, but a late run for LWU tied the match, 2-2, after a 25-22 set win for Lindenwood.

In the final set, FHSU used two kills from Callie Christensen and a Reagan Vanderplas service ace to take a 3-0 lead.  Despite the Lions tying it, 3-3, a 3-0 run for the Tigers put them back on top for good.  After the switch, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run (13-0) to put LWU away for good.  A kill from Mares closed the match, 15-8.

Five Tigers hit double-digits in kills, led by Mares’ 15.  Flagor and Rebekah Spainhour each had 12 kills, while Christensen had 11. Sara Hewson picked up a double-double on the night with 10 kills and 12 digs.

Keanu Bradley paced the squad with 32 digs, while Wade added 13 and Vanderplas had 12 assists to go along with a team-high 34 assists. Kristen Conor was second on the team with 27 assists.

Senior Day for the Tigers is Sunday (Nov. 2) versus No. 21 Central Missouri.  Seniors Kesley Broadwell, Sara Hewson, Taylor Mares and Student Assistant Coach Kelsey Darnell will be recognized postgame.

No. 12 Baylor Upends Kansas

Kansas Athletics

WACO, Texas – Ball security proved to be the difference maker Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium, as the Kansas football team dropped its fifth-straight game, falling victim to the No. 12-ranked Baylor Bears, 60-14.

The Jayhawks (2-6, 0-5 Big 12) fumbled the ball five times and turned it over three times in the first half, helping Baylor (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) eclipse the 60-point mark for the fourth time this season.

Junior quarterback Michael Cummings connected on 21-of-30 pass attempts for 288 yards to tie his career-high in passing yards set three weeks ago against Oklahoma State (Oct. 11). Freshman running back Corey Avery caught four of those for a career-high 92 yards, while senior wide receiver Nick Harwell hauled in five receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

That was the second multi-touchdown performance of the season for Harwell, as he snagged two touchdown passes in the season opener against Southeast Missouri State. Those two scores also marked the first time that a Kansas receiver had two or more multi-touchdown games in a season since Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier accomplished the same feat in 2009.

BU quarterback Bryce petty threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Corey Coleman finished the game with three receptions for 167 yards and two of those touchdowns.

Defensively for Kansas, senior linebacker Ben Heeney paced the Jayhawk defense with his 17th-career game with 10 or more tackles, finishing the game with 10 stops. Sophomore safety Fish Smithson wasn’t far behind with a career-high nine stops against the Bears.

The Kansas defense kept the high potent Bears’ offensive attack at bay on their opening possession, holding Baylor to just its second three-and-out on its first drive of the 2014 season. However, it only took BU one play and 11 seconds on its second possession to advance 72 yards for the game’s first score when Petty connected with Coleman for the 7-0 lead.

Baylor tacked on another quick six points, after a botched exchange from freshman center Joe Gibson to Cummings set up another scoring drive from the KU 18-yard line. It only took four plays, capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by BU running back Devin Chafin, to extend the Bears’ lead, 13-0, which would stand after a missed extra point by kicker Chris Callahan.

A 13-0 deficit didn’t faze Kansas midway through the first quarter as newly appointed Co-Offensive Coordinator Eric Kiesau huddled the troops on the Baylor 23-yard line to lay out the offensive approach for the Jayhawks’ next possession. The calming presence worked with KU driving 77 yards to cut into the BU lead, 13-7.

Cummings hit Avery on a blitz read for a 36-yard reception to advance Kansas across mid-field for the first time on the day. The aerial attack continued on the drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Harwell to give Kansas its first points on the day. That was the first catch and score by the wide out since his two-touchdown showing against Southeast Missouri State in the season opener.

After Harwell’s touchdown, Baylor received the ensuing kickoff and never looked back, scoring 26-unanswered points to close out the first half and dig a 32-point deficit for the Jayhawks, 39-7. The Kansas defense, trying to make up for the lackluster of an offensive presence in the first half, did its best to keep the Bears off the scoreboard, allowing just four touchdowns on eight BU scoring drives, including holding Baylor to three field goals on six trips inside the red zone.

The Bears kept the momentum until late in the third quarter, when KU broke a 34:40 scoring drought from the first quarter with its second touchdown on the day.

Faced with a second and long situation, Cummings hit Avery on another blitz read for career-best 49 yards to the Baylor three yard line. On the next play, Cummings handed the ball back to Avery for a quick two yards, before hitting Harwell in the corner of the endzone for his second score of the game and his second multi-touchdown performance of the season.

However, the hole Baylor dug the Jayhawks into was far too great, as KU dropped its sixth game of the season and its fifth-straight to the Bears, 60-14.

Kansas returns home to Memorial Stadium, Saturday, Nov. 8, as the Jayhawks play host to Iowa State for their second-to-last home game of the season. KU will make its fourth appearance on FSN in 2014, with kickoff slated for 2:30 p.m.

Big second half carries FHSU to comeback win at Nebraska-Kearney

By GERARD WELLBROCK

The Fort Hays State Tigers score 24 unanswered points in the second half after trailing 10-0 at halftime and beat Nebraska-Kearney 24-17 Saturday afternoon at Cope Stadium in Kearney. After managing just two first downs and 52 yards of offense, the Tigers explode for eight first downs and 261 yards in the second half.

Coach Chris Brown Postgame Interview

Alex Schmidtberger / Kenneth Iheme Postgame Interview

The Tigers score their first points on a safety early in the third quarter when a snap went over the head of Lopers punter Davis Brendel who knocked the ball out of the endzone. FHSU then scored on a six yard touchdown run by quarterback Treveon Albert to pull within 10-9 with 11:38 to play in the third quarter.

Game Highlights

Ed Williams would give the Tigers the lead for good on their first possession of the fourth with a 61 yard touchdown pass to go up 17-10. Kenneth Iheme used a 44 yard run to set up a four yard TD run to build the lead to 24-10 with 4:08 to play.

The Lopers answered with a 13-play touchdown drive to cut the gap to seven with 1:15 to play, but Garrison Hendricks recovered an on-side kick to end the comeback bid.

After allowing 237 yards in the first half, the Tigers held UNK to just 86 in the second half.

Kenneth Iheme led FHSU with a career-high 149 rushing yards. Quarterback Treveon Albert added 61 with both scoring a touchdown. Albert completed 3 of 8 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Kearney’s Bronson Marsh rushed for 61 yards while completing 13 of 25 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown

With the win FHSU improves to 4-5, their most conference wins since joining the MIAA in 2006. UNK falls to 2-7.

Hays High football season ends in McPherson

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

The story line of Friday night for Hays High was the Indians needed to beat McPherson by 17 points in order to make the playoffs. When it was announced that the Bullpups starting quarterback was out of the game the odds seemed to tilt in Hays’ favor.

Even after Hays fumbled on their first possession and punted on their second, the Indian defense held. Hays would score on their next two possessions to take a 14-0 lead with 6:02 left before half time. That is when the McPherson offense started to click. McPherson scored on the ensuing possession, cutting the lead down to 14-7. After Hays High lost the next possession on downs at their own 43, McPherson scored with 44 seconds left before half time to tie the game at 14.

McPherson would turn those 14 unanswered points into 21 scoring on their first possession of the second half. Hays answered with a one play drive that featured Alex Delton running for 61 yards to tie the game at 21. McPherson would score twice more on either side of a Hays three and out. McPherson took a 42-21 lead with 6:04 remaining in the game on a 4th down play from the 20 yard line.

Hays would fight back with a touchdown pass from Alex Delton to Keith Dryden. Hayden Kreuzter recovered the onside kick, and scored on a 46 yard pass from Delton to bring the score 42-35 with 3:39 left. Hays would then hold McPherson to a short punt after three plays, but threw an interception to end the game.

Hays finishes the year at 7-2, both losses coming in district play. McPherson wins their seventh straight game, improving to 7-2 and finished as district champs with a 3-0 mark.

Hays ran for 211 yards and passed for 182, totaling 393. McPherson rushed for 207 and threw for 213, totaling 420.

TMP-Marian volleyball goes 1-2 at state tourney

The TMP-Marian volleyball team put up quite a fight at the 4A Division II state volleyball tournament Friday in Salina, but come up short in their bid to advance to Saturday semifinals after going 1-2 in pool play.

The Monarchs opened the day by upsetting No. 2 seed Holomb 2-0 (25-17, 25-22). They lost 2-1 to Baldwin (18-25, 25-22, 11-25) then fell to Hoyt-Royal Valley 2-1 in a close math (25-16, 25-27, 27-29).

TMP-Marian, which won just six matches a year ago, finishes the season 23-16.

Pro Bowl S Berry to return to Chiefs vs Jets

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs safety Eric Berry is expected to play for the first time since spraining his ankle in a Week 2 loss to Denver when Kansas City plays the New York Jets on Sunday.

Berry was limited in practice but listed as probable on the final injury report Friday, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he is planning on Berry playing against the Jets.

Reid did not say whether Berry would start.

Berry hurt his ankle early against Denver on Sept. 14. He has practiced off and on the past few weeks but has not been active on game day.

The Chiefs refused to make Berry available to reporters Friday.

Conner Frankamp to leave Kansas

Kansas Athetics

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Shooting guard Conner Frankamp will not begin his sophomore season with the Kansas men’s basketball team. Friday morning, head coach Bill Self announced Frankamp’s decision to leave the University of Kansas.

“I met with Conner and his father (Martin Frankamp) Wednesday to discuss his situation and opportunity this season at Kansas,” Self said. “On Thursday he informed me he was going to transfer at the end of this fall semester. From this point forward he is no longer part of this team and will not participate this semester so he can transfer after Christmas and have two-and-a-half years remaining when he becomes eligible after sitting out one full academic year.”

The all-time scoring leader in the Wichita City League from Wichita North High School, Frankamp came in and played in 27 games as a freshman in 2013-14. He was a key factor in the Jayhawks’ 2014 NCAA Tournament as he averaged 11.0 points per game and went 7-for-14 from three-point range. By the end of his rookie season, Frankamp was averaging 8.3 minutes a game and shooting over 31 percent from behind the arc.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a while now,” Frankamp said. “I love KU and I love the Jayhawks. I feel like I’ve improved quite a bit since I’ve been here. I love my teammates but I just don’t feel like it’s the right fit for me. We have many good guards and so many big-time players. I want to be at a place where I could play a bigger role.”

Frankamp progressed through the year, recording his best game of his career in the last game of the 2013-14 season when he scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-7 threes vs. Stanford (3/23). In KU’s first game of the NCAA Tournament, he tallied 10 points against Eastern Kentucky (3/21). In conference play, Frankamp’s best outing was a 2-for-3 effort from three-point range at Kansas State (2/10).

“This was disappointing news to us. Conner is a fine young man, a very good basketball player and certainly part of what we had envisioned not only our future but also as an impact guy for this upcoming season,” Self said. “We still have six other very good perimeter players. We’re looking forward to all six of those guys contributing in a big way and meaningful minutes throughout the course of the year. Conner will finish this semester academically and will continue to get academic support from us. We wish him the best in his decision making of his new school and in his future basketball endeavors.”

“Coach Self has been a great coach to me, I’ve learned so much under him,” Frankamp said. “He’s not only a great coach but has been a great mentor for me. I can talk to him about almost anything.

“The Kansas fans are amazing, probably the best in the country,” Frankamp added. “I want to wish my teammates good luck. They are like family to me and I want to see them succeed. I’ll still be rooting for them to win and everything.”

No. 5 Kansas, picked to win its 11th-straight Big 12 Conference regular season title, will unofficially open the season when the Jayhawks welcome Washburn to Allen Fieldhouse for an exhibition contest on Monday, Nov. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Norton tops TMP in season finale

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

The Norton Bluejays used a 32 point first half to put the TMP Monarchs away 42-6 in the final regular season game Thursday night at Lewis Field in Hays. Norton ends their regular season 9-0 and will host Riley County in the first round of the 3A playoffs Tuesday. The Monarchs finish 0-9.

It was a tight 6-0 game after the first quarter but Norton exploded for 26 second quarter points and never looked back.

Bluejay quarterback Jordan Dole ran for three first half touchdowns while running back Jared Tallent ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns.

A bright spot for the Monarchs was a late touchdown pass from David McFarland to TJ Flax from 27 yards out.  The Monarchs lose seven seniors off of this year’s squad.
