Royals edge Giants for 2-1 World Series lead

By JANIE McCAULEY
AP Baseball Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, Lorenzo Cain drove in an early run off Tim Hudson and made a pair of nifty catches, and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-2 Friday night to take a 2-1 World Series lead.

Cain’s RBI groundout three batters in put the Royals ahead, and Kansas City expanded its lead to 3-0 in the sixth when Alex Gordon hit an RBI double off Hudson and scored on Eric Hosmer’s single off left-hander Javier Lopez.

San Francisco finally got to Guthrie in the bottom of the sixth when pinch-hitter Michael Morse hit an RBI double over third base just past the glove of a diving Mike Moustakas and scored on Buster Posey’s groundout against Kelvin Herrera.

Herrera, Brandon Finnegan, Wade Davis and Greg Holland combined for four innings of hitless relief, the longest in a Series game in 22 years.

Hays Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive With Win

By Dustin Armbruster

It wasn’t easy…nor should it have been. Hays and Abilene were each coming off their first loss of the season and met up in week 2 of district play, both needing a victory to keep the best picture of the playoffs in front of them.

Things did not start well for Hays High as Abilene took the first play of the game 68 yards for a touchdown by quarterback Hartley Hazlett. Trailing 7-0 Hays reponded with a nine play 77 yard drive capped by a three yard Isaiah Blackmon run. The Indians missed the extra point and trailed 7-6.

Neither team could grab a first half stop. Abilene scored on a Tanner Hoekman 1 yard run answered by a Isaiah Blackmon 2 yard scoring run and with a two point conversion tied the game at 14.

Abilene took the lead again on a Hazlett touchdown pass to Hoekman from 76 yards out. Only to see Hays tie the game at 21 with a Alex Delton one yard quarterback sneak.

Abilene had the ball to end the first half and scored on a one yard dive by Hoekman to take a 27-21 lead after the Indians blocked the extra points.

Hays got the ball to begin the second half, but threw an interception just four plays into their drive. Abilene drove inside of the Indian’s five yard line, but lost the possession downs following a Brendan Ibarra tackle for loss on fourth down. The very next play Hays tied the game up on a 90 yard touchdown run by Delton. The extra point though hit the left upright to leave the game tied at 27.

Abilene scored on the ensuing drive again on a touchdown down pass from Hazlett to Hoekman. Hays again though blocked the extra point leaving Abilene with a 33-27 lead with 1:16 remaining in the third quarter.

The ensuing drive by Hays High looked to be stalled until Delton found Garrett Pfannenstiel for his first career reception. It was a 12 yard catch on 4th and 9. Delton capped off the 4:45 drive with a 17 yard run. Kyler Leiker extra point just made it past the cross bar to give Hays High their first lead at 34-33 with 8:38 remaining in the game.

Abilene drove to the Hays 23 yard line but couldn’t convert on 4th and 10. Hays took over and 12 plays later ran out the clock for the 34-33 win.

Alex Delton led the Indians on the ground with 257 yards and three scores on 24 carries. Isaiah Blackmon rushed for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Connor Rule ran for 41 yards and Hayden Kreutzer finished the game with 57 yards rushing. Hays ended the game with 484 yards of offense. Abilene totaled 402 yards. Hays was 9 for 10 on third downs and converted on the one fourth down they faced. Neither team punted in the game.

Hays with the win moves to 7-1 on the year and 1-1 in district play. Abilene is 6-2 and 0-2.

There are many scenarios that are set up for Hays to potentially make the playoffs, but it all comes down to winning. If Hays wins by 17+ points at McPherson and Buhler beats Abilene, the Indians are playoff bound. If Abilene beat Buhler, Hays only needs to beat McPherson by any margin to become district champions. McPherson moved to 2-0 in district play with a 44-42 in over Buhler. Hays lost to Buhler last week 55-21.

Russell outlasts TMP

By JEREMY McGUIRE
HaysPost

Russell 24, TMP 17

TMP opened up play on Friday night with a 55 yard touchdown scoring drive to take an early seven to nothing lead.  The Monarchs wouldn’t find the endzone again until late in the fourth quarter in a 24-17 loss, keeping TMP winless through eight games in the 2014 season.  Cameron Fouts accounted for both TMP touchdowns.  The first a 40 yard strike to Jared Schumacher  in the first quarter and the next a late 14 yard connection with Chase Romme at the 5:20 mark of the fourth quarter.  His last pass was intercepted in the red zone with under 2 minutes to play in the game that sealed TMP’s fate.

Russell used the playmaking ability of junior Reshean Holloway who returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown and also threw 2 passes for scores.  The Broncos are now two and six on the season and will travel to Beloit next Thursday.  TMP is oh and eight and will finish the season at home on Thursday against Norton.

JOHN MONTGOMERY INTERVIEW

HHS and TMP soccer plays to scoreless draw

The Hays High and TMP soccer teams closed out their regular season’s by playing to a scoreless draw Thursday afternoon at the FHSU Soccer Complex.

The Monarchs finish the regular season 8-7-1 and the Indians 2-11-3.

Both find out Saturday who when and where they play in next week regional tournaments.

Cole’s Golden Goal lifts FHSU men’s soccer to ninth-straight win

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State needed a bit of extra time to find its ninth straight win as Maurizio Costa’s corner kick found Michael Cole for the golden goal in a 2-1 overtime win at Lindenwood on Thursdaynight (Oct. 23) in St. Charles, Mo. The win pushed FHSU to 11-3-1 overall and 8-2 in the MIAA, giving the Tigers separation in the standings from Lindenwood, which dropped to 7-6-3 overall and 5-4-1 in the MIAA.

After Mauricio Castorino nearly ended the match right at the beginning of overtime with a shot from midfield that the goalkeeper barely got back to in time to punch over the bar Costa would find Cole on a corner kick from the right corner that went through traffic and found Cole near the back post at the 93:10 mark.

Lindenwood was the agressor early in the match, keeping the Tigers on their heels for a good chunk of the first half. The Lions outshot the Tigers 7-2 in the first half as the teams played to a scoreless tie at the break.

A mistake by the Lions just over 11 minutes into the second half led to the Tigers’ first goal. Castorino sprinted to a loose ball that Lindenwood’s last defender did not control, took it off his foot and got a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, beating him in close low to the right to make it 1-0 in favor of the Tigers.

Fort Hays State was on the verge of wrapping up the match in regulation when Lindenwood’s Andre Hayne gathered a loose ball near the top of the box, turned and fired a shot that found the upper left corner of the net. FHSU goalkeeper Kent Freund had little time to make any adjustment to the sudden strike of the ball that found the net at 84:24.

However, the Tigers picked up their keeper with the overtime goal to keep the longest win streak in program history alive. Freund moved to 10-2-1 on the season between the pipes, setting a new school record for wins by a goalkeeper in a season, pushing past the nine by Jason Babyak last year and Ryan Pakieser in 2011. Freund made six saves on the evening.

Lindenwood goalkeeper Jonathan Newkirk moved to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

The win sets up a huge regional showdown on Sunday (Oct. 26) at 12 pm when the Tigers host Northeastern State in a battle of the top two teams in the MIAA. Northeastern State has already grabbed at least a share of the MIAA regular season title, currently 10-0 in conference play. FHSU enters at 8-2 in the conference. Both teams have just two conference matches remaining.

Northeastern State is currently No. 1 in the Central Region rankings. The first set was released on Wednesday, October 22. Fort Hays State was No. 2 in the rankings. Lindenwood was No. 3, so the win for FHSU was huge to move to 2-0 against Lindenwood this season and gain separation in overall records.

FHSU men’s basketball picked second in MIAA preseason coaches poll

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State men’s basketball was picked to finish second in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Thursday (Oct. 23) by the conference office. The Tigers finished with a record of 22-8 in 2013-14 and made their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Mark Johnson.

2014-15 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
1. Central Missouri (10) 151
2. Fort Hays State (2) 145
3. Washburn (1) 137
4. Northwest Missouri (1) 129
5. Missouri Southern 120
6. Central Oklahoma 110
7. Nebraska-Kearney 103
8. Emporia State 82
9. Lindenwood 79
10. Pittsburg State 73
11. Missouri Western 53
12. Northeastern State 39
13. Southwest Baptist 29
14. Lincoln 15

Fort Hays State received two first place votes in the poll and was just six voting points behind last year’s national champion, Central Missouri. The Mules received 10 first place votes after tying for the MIAA regular season title last year. Washburn and Northwest Missouri State also received first place votes.

The Tigers return four players with starting experience, including one All-American, and six letterwinners from last year’s team that finished fourth in the MIAA regular season standings. FHSU looks to continue its success in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, as it has averaged just over 21 wins per season over the last seven seasons. The Tigers reached 20 or more wins in five of those seasons and produced at least 19 in all seven.

Junior point guard Craig Nicholson headlines the returners after earning an All-America Honorable Mention by Division II Bulletin. Nicholson was a unanimous All-MIAA First Team selection, and a Daktronics All-Central Region First Team and NABC All-District First Team selection. Nicholson had a record-setting season in 2013-14, dishing out 7.4 assists per game to break the school record he set one year earlier with 6.9 per game. Nicholson set the table for all his teammates, but still led the team in scoring at 17.2 points per game. He gave defenses fits with his dribble-drive ability drawing several fouls that allowed him to shoot 237 free-throws on the season, making 190, which set a new school record for made free-throws in a season and he shot 80.2 percent in the process. That shattered the old record of 169 made by Mark Wilson in 1978-79. He was just two attempts shy of Wilson’s attempts record for a season. Nicholson’s 222 assists in 2013-14 were third-most for a season in school history, only behind Raymond Lee who played more games in seasons with 237 and 228. Through two years, Nicholson has 904 points and 414 assists at FHSU.

Tomislav Gabric returns at guard after starting all 30 games last year. He gave the Tigers an all-around threat on the floor. Gabric averaged 8.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game with an ability to shoot outside or get to the basket off the dribble. His 6-foot, 6-inch frame at the No. 3 position gave several teams a match-up problem defensively. He shot 50 percent from the field, 37.1 percent beyond the 3-point line, and 76.7 percent at the free-throw line.

Junior Jake Stoppel and senior Jared Tadlock return for the Tigers in the post after combining for 30 starts last year. Stoppel was second on the team in rebounding and sixth in scoring, while Tadlock was eighth in scoring. Stoppel started 23 games and ranked second on the team in rebounding last year with 4.4 per game. He added 6.1 points per game to rank sixth on the team. Tadlock started seven games last year. He averaged 3.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, while hitting 19 three-point field goals and shooting 39.6 percent beyond the arc.

Also returning at the guard position are seniors James Fleming, Achoki Moikobu and Nick Capiti. Fleming was the top scorer off the bench and a strong three-point shooting threat, while Moikobu was utilized as both a point guard and shooting guard off the bench. Capiti redshirted last year after playing in 26 games for the Tigers in 2012-13. Fleming finished last year at 9.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game and played in all 30 games. He drained 46 three-point field goals (most of any returner) and shot a great percentage at the free-throw line (83.7 percent, 77-of-92). Moikobu also played in all 30 games, averaging 4.7 points and 1.6 assists per game. Capiti averaged 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in 2012-13.

Looking to make a splash immediately for the Tigers will be three transfers, two coming from NCAA Division I schools. Senior Royce Williams is a transfer from Weber State University, where he played 58 games in two years and shot 41 percent from the field last year to help the Wildcats to a Big Sky Conference title and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Dom Samac is a junior transfer from Denver University, where he played for two years. He made 11 starts last year for Denver, averaging 3.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Jeremy Wilson is a junior transfer from Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where he played in all 31 games last year, averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Drew Kite looks to bolster the Tiger lineup in the post after redshirting his first year out of high school. The Scott Community High School product from Scott City, Kan., was a Kansas All-Class First Team selection as a senior, averaging 19.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. He helped Scott Community to three consecutive state championships in basketball, while averaging a double-double his final two years of high school.

The Tigers have three freshmen newcomers in Grant Holmes, Kade Spresser and Hadley Gillum. Holmes was the all-time leading scorer at Concordia (Kan.) High School and a four-time all-state selection Class 4A, earning first-team honors as a senior. He averaged 21 points per game as a senior. Spresser played at Hoxie (Kan.) High School and was named the Class 1A Player of the Year as a senior by Kansas-Sports.com. He was an all-state first team selection twice and averaged 20.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game as a senior. Gillum was a Class 2A All-State First Team selection twice at Plainville (Kan.) High School, averaging a double-double over his final two years. As a senior, he averaged 21 points and 14.5 rebounds per game.

The Tigers open the season with a pair of neutral site region games against Upper Iowa and Minnesota State-Moorhead in Maryville, Mo., November 14-15. The home opener for the Tigers will be on November 19 against Central Christian College.

Royals beat Giants to even World Series 1-1

By RONALD BLUM
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Billy Butler hit a tiebreaking single, Salvador Perez and Omar Infante drove in two runs each with big hits in a five-run sixth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Francisco Giants 7-2 Wednesday night to even the World Series at one game apiece.

A night after the Giants opened with a 7-1 victory for their seventh straight Series win, Gregor Blanco led off the game with a home run against hard-throwing rookie Yordano Ventura. Brandon Belt tied the score 2-all with an RBI double in the fourth.

Butler’s single off Jean Machi drove in his second run of the night and put the Royals ahead 3-2. Perez lined a two-run double to the left-center wall for a three-run lead, and Infante homered into the left-field bullpen off Hunter Strickland.

Game 3 is Friday night in San Francisco.

Alcides Escobar’s RBI double in the bottom of the first off Jake Peavy and Butler’s run-scoring single in the second put the Royals ahead 2-1 for their first lead of the Series.

After Infante’s homer, Strickland started screaming and got into a confrontation with Perez as he crossed the plate. The dugouts emptied, but no punches were thrown and Hunter was replaced by Jeremy Affeldt.

Ventura allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings and didn’t get a decision for the third straight start in the postseason. Kelvin Herrera, one of Kansas City’s 100 mph-throwing relievers, escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth and was in line for the win.

Peavy settled down after Escobar’s hit, retiring 10 in a row on 28 pitches before Lorenzo Cain’s soft single to center leading off the sixth. He walked Eric Hosmer, and Machi came in and left a fastball up to Butler, who lined it into left for the go-ahead run.

San Francisco tied a World Series record by using five pitchers in the sixth.

After the ceremonial first pitch from retired Royals star George Brett, Blanco drove Ventura’s eighth pitch, a 98 mph fastball, into the Kansas City bullpen for his first home run since Sept. 22. It was the 10th home run by the opening batter of a Series game, the first since Boston’s Johnny Damon in 2004.

Escobar reached on an infield hit leading off the bottom half, a hard one-hopper that popped out of the glove of shortstop Brandon Crawford, who tried for a backhand stop.

Escobar was caught stealing second by catcher Buster Posey, but Cain doubled with two outs, Hosmer walked and Butler bounced a single past the outstretched glove of a diving Crawford, ending Kansas City’s 0-for-17 slide with runners in scoring position dating to Game 2 of the AL Championship Series against Baltimore.

Butler is a .429 hitter (15 for 35) against Peavy.

Making his first start since Oct. 11, Ventura showed the heat that made him the starting pitcher with the highest average velocity in the major leagues this year. He reached 100 mph on his first pitch to Posey in the first.

Infante pulled a double with one out in the second and scored with two outs for a 2-1 lead when Peavy left a first-pitch fastball over the plate and Escobar sliced an opposite-field double inside the right-field line.

Pablo Sandoval doubled leading off the fourth, a drive that bounced off the glove of Cain with his back to the plate near the center-field wall. Sandoval, who reached base for his 25th consecutive postseason game, scored when Belt hooked a one-out changeup into right field for another double.

San Francisco put two on with one out in the sixth, and the Royals brought in Herrera, usually their seventh-inning man. He retired Belt on a flyout to left and then, throwing at up to 101 mph, got Michael Morse to ground to shortstop for a forceout.

San Francisco, which opened at home en route to titles in 2010 and 2012, was trying to become the first team to win the first two Series games on the road since the 1999 New York Yankees on the way to their sweep of Atlanta. Forty-two of 53 teams to take 2-0 leads went on to win the title, including nine straight since the 1996 Braves lost to the Yankees in six games.

After a day off, the Series shifts Friday to bayside AT&T Park in San Francisco.

NOTES: Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig held a pregame news conference to honor Pete Frates, the former Boston College baseball captain who is afflicted with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Frates inspired the ice bucket challenge last summer, and Selig presented an inscribed silver ice bucket to his father, John; mother, Nancy; brother, Andrew, and sister, Jennifer. Frates, 29, was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago. He is paralyzed and was not able to attend. … Commissioner elect Rob Manfred presented a pair of new awards for relief pitchers, named after Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman. Kansas City’s Greg Holland received the AL honor and Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel was given the NL award.
