Bumgarner, Pence lead Giants over Royals in Game 1 of World Series

By RONALD BLUM
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — By the time Madison Bumgarner took the mound to throw his first pitch, the San Francisco Giants already held a three-run lead.

It might as well have been 100 with the way MadBum and this orange-and-black bunch play in the World Series.

Bumgarner carried a shutout into the seventh inning, Hunter Pence homered early and the Giants showed off their October poise, putting a sudden stop to the Kansas City Royals’ perfect postseason roll by romping 7-1 in the Series opener Tuesday night.

“They’ve obviously been on a great run. You don’t get here without that,” Bumgarner said. “I think our team is concentrating on what they need to do, not what the Royals are doing.”

From the get-go, the Giants simply did everything right to win their seventh straight World Series game. There’s a reason they’re trying for their third title in five years.

“I can’t say I’m surprised by these guys,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

The Royals, meanwhile, looked nothing like the fresh team that had become baseball’s darlings by starting the playoffs with eight wins in a row — back on the field after a five-day layoff, their pitching, hitting and fielding all deserted them.

The fates seemed to change from the very first batter, in fact. Gregor Blanco led off with a soft line drive to center field and AL Championship Series MVP Lorenzo Cain charged, then backed off as the ball fell for a single. It would’ve taken a near miracle to catch it, but that’s the kind of play the Royals had been making on a routine basis.

Moments later, Pence’s homer highlighted a three-run burst in the first inning against James Shields. Nicknamed “Big Game James,” he once again failed to live up to that billing and left in the fourth when the Giants made it 5-0.

“It just wasn’t my night tonight,” Shields said.

By then, Royals fans who had waited since 1985 for the Series to return to town had gone silent. Or, worse, they were booing while small “Let’s go, Giants!” chants echoed through Kauffman Stadium.

Just like that, what many figured would be a tight matchup had turned into a mismatch. And it was a good omen for the Giants — the Game 1 winner has won 15 of the last 17 World Series.

The Royals will try to get even in Game 2 on Wednesday night when rookie Yordano Ventura starts against veteran Jake Peavy.

“We didn’t expect to come in here and sweep the San Francisco Giants,” Kansas City manager Ned Yost said.

Bumgarner added to his sparkling World Series resume, improving to 3-0 and extending his scoreless streak to 21 innings before Salvador Perez homered with two outs in the seventh.

“I would tell you I wasn’t thinking about it, but you know,” Bumgarner said. “There’s no way around it. You know. There’s so much talk about it. Obviously, a World Series game is not something you tend to forget.”

The 25-year-old left-hander was in trouble only once. Down 3-0 in the third, the Royals loaded the bases with a two-out walk and cleanup man Eric Hosmer stepped to the plate, but grounded out on the first pitch.

Bumgarner went on to stretch his road postseason scoreless streak to a record 32 2-3 innings as the Giants cruised. He pitched three-hit ball for seven innings, struck out five and walked one.

Michael Morse hit an RBI single that finished Shields, and reliever Danny Duffy walked Blanco with the bases loaded.

Rookie Joe Panik hit an RBI triple that bounced past usually reliable right fielder Nori Aoki in the seventh and scored on a single by October force Pablo Sandoval. The MVP of the 2012 World Series triumph, Sandoval also had an RBI double in the first that extended his postseason streak of reaching base to 24 straight games.

Pence also doubled and walked twice.

“We’re ready to move on tomorrow,” Shields said. “We have a lot of positive attitude right now, we’re tracking at an all-time high. We just faced a good pitcher tonight.”

Before the game, the mood at the ballpark was positively giddy. Ushers greeted fans with “Welcome to the World Series!” and some hot-dog vendors high-fived each other behind the counter.

Yet the Giants wrecked that fun, and won for the 16th time in their last 18 postseason games. A slight misstep: Tim Lincecum, who hasn’t pitched this postseason, was delayed in the clubhouse and was late getting onto the field when the teams lined up before the game.

The Royals had won 11 straight in the postseason dating to their 1985 championship run, one short of the record held by a pair of New York Yankees clubs.

UP NEXT

Giants: Peavy lost 12 straight decisions this season, spanning his July trade from Boston to the Giants. … The 33-year-old is 1-3 with a 7.03 ERA in seven postseason starts, including an outing for the Red Sox in last year’s World Series. He beat Washington in the NL Division Series and was pulled after four innings vs. St. Louis in the NL Championship Series. … Royals DH Billy Butler is 14 for 33 (.424) with three HRs off Peavy.

Royals: The 23-year-old Ventura will become the first rookie to start a World Series game at any position for the Royals. No Giants hitter has ever faced the right-hander with a 100 mph heater. … Ventura pitched well in an ALDS start against the Angels and struggled vs. Baltimore in the ALCS, leaving with a tight shoulder.

NO REPLAY NEEDED

The first Series game in the expanded replay era didn’t require a single video review. But all six umpires quickly huddled to discuss a foul ball that glanced off Perez’s bat on a bounce, and got it right.

Chiefs show resiliency in win over San Diego

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were such a mess in their season opener against the Tennessee Titans that they were quickly written off, their dramatic turnaround last season considered a fluke.

Turns out that conclusion was premature.

After steadily improving over the first few weeks of the season, the Chiefs earned a marquee victory Sunday when they rallied for a 23-20 victory in San Diego — not only knocking off one of the NFL’s hottest teams but taking a big step toward the top of the division.

Sure, the Denver Broncos remain the team to beat in the AFC West, and the Chiefs are still looking up the standings at the Chargers. But there is suddenly a feeling that the Chiefs can make some noise in the wild-card race, if not for the division title.

“I think overall the whole picture is good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday. “Yeah, it came down to the last drive, but there were a lot of people on both sides of the ball and special teams that put you in a position to be able to do that.”

The Chiefs had chances to steal wins in Denver and San Francisco, but struggled in crunch time. They had no such trouble against the Chargers, marching 62 yards in nine plays in the waning minutes to set up a 48-yard, go-ahead field goal by rookie Cairo Santos.

The kick was a little bit wobbly. It looked a little bit funky. But it just managed to skirt inside the upright, helping to end the Chargers’ five-game winning streak.

“I have 100 percent confidence in Santos,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said. “He has shown he can do it. In practice he barely misses. It’s about confidence.”

Santos might be indicative of the Chiefs’ growing confidence.

After wrestling the job away from veteran Ryan Succop in training camp, Santos promptly missed field goals in each of his first two games. He hasn’t missed since, including all three attempts against San Diego.

“That’s the game of football,” quarterback Alex Smith said. “You have to trust the guy next to you. We talk about it all the time — offensively, defensively, the guy next to you in the huddle — you have to trust all those guys to do their job. And you have to trust that you’re going to do yours. It’s no different with Cairo. The guy went out there and hit a great kick and had a great kickoff right after, so I’m happy for him.”

Now, a resilient bunch of Chiefs that withstood a series of devastating injuries during the first couple weeks of the season has a relatively weak schedule ahead.

First up Sunday is a visit from St. Louis, coming off an emotional high from its victory over Seattle. Then comes a home game against the New York Jets, a team that has lost six straight games.

“The great part about this is there were a lot of people we could stand up here and mention. The great part about this is we still have a ton of room to improve,” Reid said. “We’ve got a heck of a football team coming in here this week. Jeff (Coach Fisher) has done a nice job with the Rams. They are playing at a very high level, they’re fast, they’re aggressive. We’ve got to make sure that we get ourselves ready.”

Chiefs snap Chargers’ 5-game win streak on late kick

By BERNIE WILSON
AP Sports Writer

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs have made the AFC West a three-team race.

Cairo Santos kicked a 48-yard field goal field goal with 21 seconds left and the Chiefs beat San Diego 23-20 Sunday, snapping the Chargers’ five-game winning streak.

The Chiefs moved into field goal range thanks to Smith, who completed three straight passes on the drive for 53 yards, including a 29-yarder to Dwayne Bowe.

Smith was playing on the same field where he led Helix High to consecutive San Diego Section championships.

Coming off their bye, the Chiefs (3-3) pulled within 1 ½ games of San Diego (5-2). The Denver Broncos (4-1) hosted San Francisco on Sunday night. Had the Chiefs lost, they would have dropped three games behind San Diego.

The Chargers flunked their sternest test in a month and lost for the first time since a defeat at Arizona in the season opener.

Jamaal Charles scored once and gained 95 yards to give him 6,113 for his career, moving him to the top of Kansas City’s career list. He passed Priest Holmes, who had 6,070.

The Chargers, facing an established quarterback for the first time in four games, allowed Smith to complete 19 of 28 passes for 221 yards.

San Diego’s Philip Rivers was 17 of 31 for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith had given the Chiefs a 20-14 lead with an 11-yard touchdown pass to fullback Anthony Sherman with 14:50 left.

Sherman broke a tackle inside the 10 and scored to cap an 11-play, 70-yard drive. On the previous play, a holding call against Chargers cornerback Richard Marshall nullified a sack of Smith and gave the Chiefs a first down at the 11.

The Chargers got to the Kansas City 6 before Rivers threw two straight incompletions and San Diego had to settle for Nick Novak’s 24-yard field goal to close to 20-17.

Novak kicked a 48-yarder to tie the game with 1:57 left.

Novak has 31 straight field goal conversions, breaking John Carney’s team record of 29 set in 1992-93.

Antonio Gates caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Rivers just before halftime. It was the 67th career TD pass from Rivers to Gates, the most in NFL history from a quarterback to a tight end. Rivers also extended his team record to 27 straight games with at least one touchdown pass.

The pass was tipped by 6-foot cornerback Ron Parker but the 6-4 Gates made the catch to give the Chargers a 14-10 lead just before halftime.

San Diego backup tight end John Phillips made his first catch of the season a big one, a 1-yard touchdown reception late in the first quarter to cap a drive that was kept alive by a holding call and a pass interference call against the Chiefs.

The Chiefs came right back on a drive capped when Charles weaved in and out of traffic to score on a 16-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Former teammate Brandon Flowers leveled him a yard into the end zone, too late to keep the Chiefs from tying it at 7.

Flowers later left the game with a concussion.

After forcing the Chargers to punt, the Chiefs ate up 9 minutes, 29 seconds in moving to the San Diego 10, where Santos kicked a 28-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead.

FHSU women’s soccer sets season shutout mark in win over Missouri Western

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State Women’s Soccer pushed its shutout streak to four matches with a 1-0 victory against Missouri Western on Sunday(Oct. 19) afternoon.

The win was an important for the Tigers (8-4-2, 6-2-2 MIAA) in the MIAA standings, as FHSU entered the game tied for third in the conference standings with Central Oklahoma, while Missouri Western sits fifth in the MIAA.

A defensive battle with neither team hitting double-digits in shots, the wind played a factor in possession throughout the day at FHSU Soccer Stadium. FHSU fired eight shots on the afternoon, putting two on goal, while Missouri Western had five shots (three on goal).

After a scoreless opening half, FHSU grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the second period on Kelsey Steffens’ fifth goal of the season. Hailey Davey. who assisted on the play, dribbled deep in the field on the right side of the box before dishing a late, low cross towards the far post.

The pass slipped through two Griffon defenders into Steffens’ control, who finished past the keeper from five yards out at 49:18.

Davey picked up her fourth assist of the weekend (and ninth assist on the year) after tying her own school record with three in Friday’scontest. Steffens’ score regained her possession of the team-lead in goals.

Hannah Smith led the team in shots, fired three over 81 minutes of play. Steffens, Bailey Schmitz, Kylee Loneker and Vianei Sanchez had the Tigers’ other shots on the afternoon.

Kristen Thompson once again followed script in goal, saving three shots in a complete game performance. The shutout was Thompson’s (and the team’s) ninth of the year, setting a school record for team shutouts in a single-season. Thompson broke the season’s individual shutout mark last week.

FHSU begins a three-game road stretch next weekend, traveling to Topeka, Kan., on Friday (Oct. 24) against Washburn. The Tigers will square off with Emporia State and Nebraska-Kearney before returning to FHSU Soccer Stadium on Nov. 2, for Senior Day against WU.

The Hornets kicked a 32-yard field goal with 11:40 to play in the fourth quarter to pull within 21-13. The Tigers answer with a seven-play drive and used a 40-yard Drew O’Brien field goal that just flew over the crossbar to go up 24-13.
