Meyer captures 1,500m national title

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Fort Hays State track and field senior Brett Meyer wrapped up the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in style for the Tigers Saturday, winning the national championship in the 1,500m run. The title was the third individual national championship for the Tigers in the last three years and the 14th in NCAA history.

Meyer’s race was similar to his preliminary run on Thursday, cruising towards the back of the pack before making a final burst around the last turn to take the crown in 3:58.24. His final lap time of 53.37 was more than enough to make up the ground necessary, finishing a half second in front of second place. It was the Scott City, Kan. native’s sixth All-American honor in his storied career at FHSU.

Fellow senior Kolt Newell also earned All-American honors Saturday after finishing in a tie for 10th in the high jump. Newell needed just one jump to clear each of his first two heights, soaring over the 6-6.25 and 6-8.25 bar on his first attempts. The second team All-American honor is Newell’s third career All-American accolade.

Junior Alexcia Deutscher competed in the javelin throw at the national meet for the third time in her career Saturday, finishing 19th after a final toss of 134-2. The Ellis, Kan. native posted a career-best 160-2 earlier in the season.

Meyer’s win and freshman Ryan Stanley’s fourth-place finish in the pole vault earlier in the week gave the Tiger men 15 points in the team race, third-most among MIAA programs.

Voit, Yanks beat KC, open twinbill with 6th win in row

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luke Voit hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and the New York Yankees won their sixth game in a row, beating the Kansas City Royals 7-3 Saturday to open a day-night doubleheader.

Friday night’s game was postponed because of severe thunderstorms, forcing the split twinbill.

J.A. Happ (4-3) threw six strong innings, striking out 10. He allowed only a single hit until a familiar problem showed up in the sixth when Whit Merrifield hit a tying, three-run homer. It was the 14th homer Happ has allowed, tied for second most in the majors.

Voit quickly restored the Yankees’ lead when he hit a two-run homer estimated at 470 feet off Scott Barlow (1-1). Voit also singled and scored in the first inning, scoring from first base on Clint Frazier’s two-run double.

Thairo Estrada added some insurance in the eighth with a double into the right field corner that scored Brett Gardner and Frazier. Gardner had three hits and scored twice.

Adam Ottavino and Luis Cessa combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief of Happ.

After Billy Hamilton reached on an infield single and Nicky Lopez singled, Merrifield connected for his seventh home run of the season. Merrifield didn’t hit his seventh homer last year until Aug. 5.

Barlow had his second straight shaky outing for the Royals. His ERA sat at 2.01 after a scoreless outing against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, but got tagged for four runs in 1 2/3 innings on Wednesday in St. Louis and gave up four more runs Saturday in 1 1/3 innings.

Lopez had a couple of hits in his first game as the Royals’ leadoff hitter and Adalberto Mondesi stole his major league-best 18th base.

CONSECUTIVE TWINBILLS

The Royals were back in action for the first time since playing a doubleheader against St. Louis on Wednesday, which also was caused by stormy weather. Kansas City is playing consecutive doubleheaders for just the eighth time in franchise history, and first time since August 13-14, 1983. It’s just the second time Kansas City has played consecutive doubleheaders against two different opponents, the other time occurring on April 19 and 22, 1972, against Oakland and the Chicago White Sox.

ROSTER MOVES

Royals: Kansas City recalled LHP Brian Flynn from Triple-A Omaha and optioned RHP Richard Lovelady. Lovelady remained with the team as the 26th player for the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Flynn hasn’t pitched yet this season after spraining the UCL in his throwing arm late in spring training. The 29-year-old lefty appeared in six games for Omaha, allowing 10 runs in 22 2/3 innings pitched. He had a 2-2 record with a 3.57 ERA.

Yankees: Chance Adams was recalled Saturday to serve as New York’s 26th player in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Adams threw three scoreless innings in a 13-5 win over Tampa Bay on May 19, his only appearance this season.

UP NEXT

The Royals and Yankees will play Game 2 of their doubleheader Saturday night with a first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Jorge Lopez (0-5) will start for Kansas City while New York has yet to name a starter.

FHSU’s Landrum 15th in 200m prelims at national meet

KINGSVILLE, Texas – After entering the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 24th and final spot of the 200m dash, freshman Philip Landrum finished well above that mark in the preliminary round Friday evening (May 24).

Competing in the fastest of the three heats, Landrum placed 15th at the national meet after crossing the line in 21.48. The Wichita, Kan. native was the second-fastest freshman in the field.

The race capped off a successful freshman campaign for Landrum, who placed 14th in the 60m dash at the Indoor National Championships after capturing the indoor MIAA title in the same event. Landrum also climbed the podium at the outdoor conference meet after placing third in the 100m dash earlier this month.

Three Tigers will wrap up the national meet Saturday, beginning with junior Alexcia Deutscher in the javelin throw at 11:30 a.m. Kolt Newell will compete in the high jump beginning at 5:30 p.m. while the gun is set to go off in Brett Meyer’s 1,500m finals at 5:45 p.m.

Weather washes out day one of high school state track meet

WICHITA – Mother nature was the big winner on day one of the KSHSAA State Track and Field meet in Wichita.

After starting three hours late, a second round of rain and severe weather moved into the Wichita area just after 1 p.m. forcing officials to eventually postpone almost all remaining events to Saturday morning.

All of Friday’s remaining running events, except for the 4A, 5A and 6A 3200 meter runs will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday. All of the events will be timed finals.

The remaining 3200 meter runs are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

All of the field events have also been postponed to Friday at 8 a.m.

Some area athletes were able to take part in their field events Friday morning. Among those was Plainville’s Jared Casey who finished second in the 2A boys shot put with a throw of 54 feet 4 inches.

Jacob Eck of Ellis finished second in the 2A boys pole vault. He cleared 13 feet and finished second by tiebreaker.

In the girls 2A 3200 meter run Trego’s Helen Giefer finished second, Hoxie’s Emily Diercks was third and Sybil Giefer of Trego was fourth.

Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa will be eligible to play next season

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa will be eligible to play next season after the NCAA’s reinstatement committee agreed Friday with an appeal filed by the school.

The NCAA had declared De Sousa ineligible this past season and next season in early February.

The punishment came after De Sousa’s named surfaced last summer in an FBI probe into corruption in college basketball. The NCAA found that De Sousa’s guardian, Fenny Falmagne, had received a $2,500 payment from a “university booster and agent” and agreed to an additional $20,000 payment from the same individual and an Adidas employee for securing his commitment to Kansas.

The school appealed the decision, and the NCAA said it had “determined additional relief was appropriate.”

De Sousa declared for next month’s NBA draft but said he would return to Kansas if he could play next season.

FHSU’s Stanley All-American, Meyer advances to 1,500 finals

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Fort Hays State track and field team opened the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with two strong performances on Thursday. Freshman Ryan Stanley picked up All-American honors in the pole vault in his first appearance at the national meet while Brett Meyer advanced to Saturday’s finals of the 1,500m run.

Stanley made a strong statement in his National Championship debut, placing fourth in the field of 18 vaulters after heading into the event 10th on the national performance chart. The Bennington, Kan. native soared over the 16-11.5 bar on his first attempt, setting a new personal-best that is just one-half inch off the program record. Stanley very nearly cleared the 17-3.5 bar on the following attempt, but barely grazed the bar on the way down. He was one of just two freshman to earn a spot on the All-American podium.

Meyer secured a spot in the finals of the 1,500m run after placing second in his heat. After cruising in the back of the pack for much of the race, the Scott City, Kan. native took off over the final 150 meters. He made his way to the outside down the final stretch, passing all but one runner to finish in a time of 4:02.55. His final lap time of 55.06 was the fastest full lap between both heats. The senior will look for his sixth All-American trophy Saturday at 5:45 p.m. when he takes on 11 other runners in the finals.

Philip Landrum will look to join Meyer in the finals on Saturday when he takes to the track in the 200m prelims Friday. Landrum will run in the third and final heat, the first of which is scheduled for a 5:50 start.

HHS lands five on the All-WAC baseball team

Led by Player of the Year Trey Riggs, the Hays High Indians placed five players on the All-Western Athletic Conference baseball team. Indians coach Frank Leo is the WAC Coach of the Year.

Hays had four named to the first team, more than any other school. Along with Riggs, fellow seniors Palmer Hutchison and Cody Petersen as well as junior Brock Lummus are on the first team with freshman Dylan Dreiling an honorable mention pick.

This is the third straight year Riggs has received all-conference recognition after going 6-2 with a 1.71 ERA on the mound while batting .400. He was tied for third on the team with three home runs.

Hutchison is all-conference for the second straight season after leading the Indians with seven doubles, was tied for the team lead in triples with two while hitting .403

Ozuna, Carpenter homer, Cardinals split DH with Royals

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Marcell Ozuna and Matt Carpenter went deep as part of a four-homer barrage and the St. Louis Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Kansas City Royals by winning the second game 10-3 on Wednesday night.

Brad Keller threw seven-plus innings of two-hit baseball to snap a six-start winless streak and Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer as the Royals beat the Cardinals 8-2 in the first game.

Severe storms around St. Louis forced Tuesday night’s game to be postponed and created the day-night twinbill.

Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong also homered as St. Louis had as many home runs in the second game as it did hits in the opener.

Adam Wainwright (4-4) battled through control issues with 55 of his 103 pitches going for strikes. In five innings, he allowed three runs, six hits, walked four and struck out two.

John Gant, Andrew Miller, Carlos Martinez and John Brebbia combined for four scoreless innings of relief.

Ozuna capped a 12-pitch at-bat by blasting a three-run homer off Homer Bailey over the right field wall to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead in the first. Carpenter set the tone against Bailey, who threw 42 pitches in the inning, with a nine-pitch walk.

Ozuna also doubled, walked and scored twice. He drove in the Cardinals’ only runs in the first game, giving him five RBIs on the day.

Carpenter’s two-run homer in the second inning landed in the right field bullpen. Fowler added a solo homer in the sixth as part of a three-hit night. Wong’s three-run homer capped a four-run seventh.

Bailey (4-5) threw 66 pitches, but lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up five runs. The right-hander has allowed 10 earned runs in his last two starts (six innings) and he hasn’t beaten St. Louis since 2014 (eight starts).

Hunter Dozier’s 10th home run of the year off of Wainwright in the fifth inning travelled 420 feet. Adalberto Mondesi had a pair of hits, scored and drove in a run.
