Rare flop for Royals bullpen in loss to White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — One swing by Conor Gillaspie ended long shutout streaks for Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis.

Both relievers gave up runs for the first time in nearly three months as the Kansas City Royals’ dominant bullpen was touched up Tuesday night in a 7-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Davis replaced Herrera with two on in the seventh inning and walked Jose Abreu to load the bases for Gillaspie, who cleared them with a triple to right-center on a 2-2 pitch to give Chicago a 7-5 lead.

That ended Herrera’s scoreless streak at 30 2-3 innings, dating to June 24. Also snapped was Davis’ shutout streak of 31 2-3 innings, a club record for a reliever, with the first run charged to him since June 25.

“I felt comfortable and confident the whole time,” Davis said. “I just didn’t make the pitches I needed to make to keep the game where it was, and it ended up costing us some runs.

“We’ve thrown well as of late, but tonight we didn’t get the job done and it was unfortunate.”

The rare bullpen failure prevented Kansas City from gaining ground on AL Central leader Detroit, which lost at Minnesota. The Royals remained 1 1/2 games behind the Tigers, but still lead Seattle for the second wild-card spot.

“Guys make mistakes,” Gillaspie said. “You have to be able to take advantage. Truthfully, I don’t wish having to face them on anybody. They are the best relievers in baseball. I honestly feel that their stuff is nasty, the whole staff and a filthy bullpen. I got a big hit and helped us win a game. When you are facing guys like this, if you take a pitch off, you’re out. If you’re not in focus every single pitch you might as well walk back to the dugout.”

Kansas City used nine pitchers, a club record for a nine-inning game, in a contest that lasted 4 hours, 16 minutes — the longest nine-inning game in Royals history.

Nori Aoki had his second straight four-hit game, including a sixth-inning single that put the Royals up 5-4, but this time the bullpen couldn’t hold it.

Adam Eaton had four hits, matching his career high, and scored two runs for Chicago.

“That doesn’t happen very often,” Eaton said about beating the Royals’ bullpen.

Kansas City manager Ned Yost went to his bullpen early when starter Liam Hendriks was pulled after three-plus innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk.

“I’m very disappointed in the way I pitched,” Hendriks said.

In his past three outings, Hendriks has allowed 11 runs and 18 hits in 9 1-3 innings.

White Sox rookie right-hander Chris Bassitt also failed to make it out of the fourth. He threw 94 pitches in 3 2-3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks.

Eric Surkamp (2-0) got the win, and Zach Putnam worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

RARE WALK

Royals catcher Salvador Perez walked in the second inning, his first free pass since Aug. 12. He went 122 plate appearances without a walk.

TRAINER’S ROOM

White Sox: DH-1B Paul Konerko, who has not played since breaking his left hand on Sept. 2, took extended batting practice. “When he’s fit to play, he’ll get some time,” manager Robin Ventura said. “I don’t necessarily want him going out there not having swung a bat in two weeks. He’ll get an at-bat here or there to acclimate him.”

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy, who skipped two starts because of a sore shoulder, threw a four-inning simulated game. “There’s nothing wrong,” Duffy said. “I felt stronger than I did for about the past month.” He is slated to start Monday in Cleveland.

UP NEXT

White Sox: LHP Chris Sale, an AL Cy Young Award contender, starts the series finale. He has trouble with Royals DH Billy Butler, who has a .359 career average against him with three home runs, two doubles and 10 RBIs in 39 at-bats.

Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura has nine made consecutive quality starts, a club record for rookies.

FHSU volleyball falls just short of upset at No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State pushed nationally-ranked Nebraska-Kearney to the brink, but couldn’t pull off the upset as the Tigers fell, 3-2 (11-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 12-15), to No. 4 UNK.

The Tigers (5-4, 0-1 MIAA) forced a fifth set with the Lopers for the first time since 2003, when FHSU last defeated UNK.

Rebekah Spainhour and Mallory Flagor had 11 kills apiece to lead the team, followed by  Taylor Mares‘ 10 kills. Callie Christensen, a true freshman, played heavily in the match and had nine kills and six blocks (a team-high).  Mares added five blocks as well.

Libby Ary had 28 assists to lead the squad, sharing the rotation with Kristin Conor, who had 19 assists.

Defensively, FHSU had three players with double-digit digs, led by libero Keanu Bradley‘s 19. Kelsey Broadwell played well as a reserve, digging up 15 attacks, while Sara Hewson had 12 digs.

FHSU struggled in the opening frame against a Loper attack that hit .500, digging up just eight attacks and hitting .032 as a team.

Trailing 7-3 early in the first, a called timeout helped the Tigers start a 4-2 run to climb back within three (9-6).  From there, however, UNK strung together nine unanswered points, pushing the lead to 12 (18-6), and never looked back. The Tigers broke the run with two quick points of their own, but couldn’t recover as the Lopers took the set, 25-11.

Down 1-0 in the match, Fort Hays State rebounded in the second set to tie the match, using a negative hitting percentage by the Lopers (-.050).

Early in the set, with FHSU trailing 5-4, both teams traded three-point bursts before a 6-1 run by the Tigers (including a streak of four unanswered) pushed the visitor’s lead to four (13-9).  Fort Hays State held a lead for much of the second set, though a 5-0 run by UNK midway through the second gave the Lopers a brief 19-18 lead.

FHSU answered to break the run, though back and forth play took it to 21-all, and 23-all.  The Tigers wouldn’t yield, however, and scored two quick points, taking the set on Callie Christensen‘s third kill of the evening, 25-23.

Out of the intermission, Fort Hays State hung tough with the nationally-ranked squad, but were unable to take the set.  Tied at 3-all, a kill from Rebekah Spainhour and a Loper attack error gave FHSU a 5-3 lead, but UNK responded to tie it at 6-all and take the lead for good, though the Tigers stayed within striking distance throughout.

Behind 16-13, the Tigers allowed fell behind five (18-13) before stalling the momentum and answering with three points of their own – two of which came on a block assist and kill from Christensen.

It was all Tigers in the fourth, capitalizing on a .306 hitting percentage, 13 kills and an 86 percent side-out percentage to roll to a 25-15 set victory.

Tied 6-6 early on, the Tigers broke out on a 7-3 run to take a 13-9 lead on a kill from Flagor, forcing a UNK timeout.  Though the Lopers answered with a point after the pause, FHSU started a 5-0 run to jump ahead eight points and take control for good.  The Tigers’ largest lead of the night, 10, came at 24-14 and set point, 25-15.

For the fifth and decisive set, Fort Hays State battled tough but couldn’t pull out the road victory.

Down 8-6 at the switch, FHSU gave up one more point before rebounding with a two-point run, pulling back within one on a block assist from Christensen and Taylor Mares.  Facing match point, 14-10, FHSU rallied to 14-12 with kills from Flagor and Wade, but couldn’t complete the upset as they fell, 15-12.

Fort Hays State returns to Gross Memorial Coliseum for its home opener on Friday (Sept. 19) against Missouri Southern at 6 p.m.

HHS volleyball remains unbeaten

The Hays High volleyball team moves to 10-0 following a pair of wins at their own triangular Tuesday. The Indians defeat Nickerson 25-13 and 25-19 then knock off Hoisington 25-13 and 25-18.

Kylie Brown and Tessa Stickel each had five kills in the opener with Nickerson. Albany Schaffer had six digs and Madison Prough recorded eight assists. Brown, Stickel and Mattie Schlaefli each recorded five kills against Hoisington. Schaffer had nine digs and Prough nine assists along with three service aces.

Herman finishes 2nd; Tigers 12th at UNK Invitational

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State’s Trey Herman finished second individually at the UNK Invitational, held at Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell, Neb., on Tuesday. Herman held the lead heading into the final round and shot very well, an even-par 72, but Ross Miller of Minnesota State-Mankato had a great round of 4-under par 68 and passed Herman by one stroke. The Tigers as a team finished 12th.

Herman finished the tournament at 4-under par overall, shooting even par in the first round, 4-under in the second round, and then even par again in the final round. Herman and Miller tied for the lowest round carded in the tournament, unfortunately Miller was only three strokes back of Herman entering the final round. Even though he did not come out on top, Herman topped several individuals from schools within the region head-to-head and that will help him at the end of the year for a chance to play in the NCAA Super Regional for the second straight year.

In his last five tournament rounds, Herman is 6-under par overall. Three of those rounds have been even par, coupled with a 4-under par and 2-under par performance.

Grant Storey finished in a tie for 24th and 10-over par overall. He had rounds of 78, 71, and 77. Nick VonLintel tied for 63rd with rounds of 76, 77, and 86. Billy Frey had rounds of 81, 83, and 88. Kade Magaffin had rounds of 94, 87, and 102.

Minnesota State won the team title by 20 strokes with a total of 867, shooting an impressive 3-over par as a team. Two of their four scorers combined to shoot 7-under par. Nine teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competed in the tournament, while Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State were the only two from the MIAA. Nebraska-Kearney finished 10th at 919, while the Tigers finished 12th at 929.

FHSU women’s golf finishes 15th at Northeastern State

DeWerff opened with a 91 in the first round of the tournament, but improved by 11 strokes on the second day with an 80. Samantha Hobson shot rounds of 89 and 88 to finish with a 177. Abi Schmidtberger remained consistent in her first collegiate tournament, shooting two rounds of 89. Quillen Eichhorn had rounds of 97 and 93. Hadley Tharp shot rounds of 96 and 100.

As a team the Tigers improved by 15 strokes on the second day, but remained in 15th place. FHSU shot 715 as a team. Central Oklahoma won the tournament with a total of 604. Marla Souvannasing of Central Oklahoma and Megan Jeffery of Arkansas Tech tied for top individual honors with totals of 147, but Souvannasing won the playoff.

FHSU men’s soccer continues to hold No. 23 national rankings

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State men’s soccer remains at No. 23 in the latest NSCAA National Poll, released on Tuesday (Sept. 16). The Tigers currently sit at 2-1-1 overall and have held the No. 23 ranking in the first two regular season polls and the preseason poll.

The Tigers jump into MIAA play this week, which begins with a match-up of ranked teams. The 23rd-ranked Tigers visit 15th-ranked Northeastern State this week. Northeastern State is currently 2-2 overall. The Tigers then head to Southern Nazarene (1-4) on Saturday. FHSU’s Clifton named MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State’s Austin Clifton was named the MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week after his two goals at the MIAA/GNAC Soccer Classic in Rapid City, S.D., this weekend.

Clifton, a junior from Wichita, Kan., started both games for the Tigers, playing 83 minutes with two goals and firing five shots.  Four of his shots were on goal for a .400 shot percentage.

Clifton’s two goals came in FHSU’s 2-0 shutout of South Dakota Mines, helping the Tigers close out the weekend with a win.  Clifton gave the Tigers a lead just 6:19 into the game, taking a low cross from Michael Cole in the box and scoring on a one touch from five yards out. Clifton’s second goal of the day solidified the Tigers victory in the waning minutes of regulation.  At 86:46, Clifton broke away from the SD Mines defense, finding the lower left corner of the net from 18 yards out.

The Tigers are on the road this weekend to open MIAA play, taking on No. 7 Northeastern State this Thursday (Sept. 18) and Southern Nazarene on Saturday (Sept. 20).

FHSU’s Herman sits atop leaderboard at UNK Invitational

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State men’s golfer Trey Herman holds the lead at the UNK Invitational heading into the final round on Tuesday. Herman’s four-under par 68 in the second round on Monday at Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell, Neb., pushed him to the top of the leaderboard, where he holds a two-shot lead at four-under par overall.

FHSU Athletics
FHSU Athletics

Minus his opening round of the year last week in the first MIAA sanctioned event of the year, Herman is on a tear over his last four rounds which total six-under par overall. He shot even par and two-under par in his final two rounds last week, charging from 34th to finish seventh, and has shot four-under par in his first two rounds this week.

Herman holds a two-shot advantage on Gonzalo Martinez of Minnesota State-Mankato, who sits at 2-under par overall. Ross Miller of Minnesota State-Mankato, and Tyler Koivisto of St. Cloud State are both three back at 1-under overall. Four more golfers sit at even par overall. Herman’s 68 was the lowest round of the day and only two other golfers dipped into the 60s with 69, which included Martinez of Minnesota State-Mankato.

The Tigers as a team sit in eighth place overall with a total of 606. FHSU had a 307 in the first round, and went eight shots lower in the next round with 299. Minnesota State-Mankato leads the tournament at 577.

Grant Storey  is currently tied for 20th after a first round 78, backed up with a 1-under par 71. NickVonLintel is tied for 39th after rounds of 76 and 77. Billy Frey is 72nd after rounds of 81 and 83. Kade Megaffin is 78th after rounds of 94 and 87.

Dyson, Gore score in 9th as Royals beat White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jarrod Dyson loves to boast about what speedy base runners can do.

Dyson and Terrance Gore used their speed to score as pinch runners in the ninth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Monday night.

“He knows he’s got the ability to steal the tough base,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Mike Moustakas doubled with one out in the ninth. Dyson ran for him and stole third and came around to score as Jake Petricka (1-5) threw a wild pitch.

“I was definitely going to be safe,” Cain said. “I just put it in play and ran. They ended up bobbling the ball and Gore scored. I was definitely thinking he’d field it and hold on. (Cain is) fast. It’s a huge win for the boys.”

It was a bizarre ending to a game that the White Sox led 3-0 going into the seventh.

“It was strange,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “When you see a play like that you think that’s OK, you can give it to them and try to get the next guy, but then they get another one. That kid (Gore) is fast. Speed can do a lot of things.”

Wade Davis (9-2) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the victory, extending his scoreless streak to 31 2-3 innings.

White Sox starter John Danks pitched six scoreless innings and allowed just two singles, both by Aoki, before departing after 103 pitches. He struck out six and walked four. Danks, who has a 1.73 ERA at Kauffman Stadium, has never lost to the Royals in 15 career starts.

The Royals scored all their runs off three White Sox relievers.

Royals right-hander James Shields, who had his career best 18 1-3 scoreless innings streak ended in the first, gave up three runs and 10 hits, while striking out six and walking none in seven innings.

“We had a lot of opportunities, but he came through,” Ventura said. “We never got the big hit to put it out of reach. He was tough.”

Avisail Garcia’s two-out single in the first scored Adam Eaton. Eaton, who had three hits, led off the White Sox third with a double and scored on a Shields’ wild pitch. Conor Gillaspie singled home Alexei Ramirez with the second run of the inning.

Eric Hosmer hit a double into shallow left off Javy Guerra to open the seventh and scored on Omar Infante’s single for the first Kansas City run.

Aoki led off the eighth with an infield single, advanced to second on Gillaspie’s throwing error, took third on a Zach Putnam’s wild pitch and scored on Alex Gordon’s single.

AOKI’S BIG NIGHT

Aoki’s four hits, two that did not leave the infield, matched his career high, last accomplished on Sept. 20, 2013, against St. Louis. He also walked, reaching base five times. Aoki, who swings left-handed, is hitting .360 against left-handed pitching. It was his fourth multi-hit game in his past eight games.

UP NEXT

White Sox: RHP Chris Bassitt will make his fourth career appearance and third big league start Tuesday. Bassitt has allowed 14 hits, walked seven and hit two batters in 13 1-3 innings.

Royals: RHP Liam Hendriks, who retired only seven of the 15 batters he faced in a loss Thursday to Boston, will make another spot start Tuesday.

TRAINER’S ROOM

White Sox: DH-1B Paul Konerko (fractured left hand) took batting practice and could return to the lineup this week.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy (sore shoulder) will miss another start. He is scheduled to throw a 50-pitch four-inning simulated game Tuesday. If he has no problems, he will start Monday at Cleveland. . DH-OF Josh Willingham (groin strain) said he is available to pinch hit. He has trouble running, but not swinging.

Chiefs down 7 starters to injuries, suspensions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has a high ankle sprain and safety Eric Berry also has an ankle sprain, throwing their status into question for Sunday’s game in Miami.

Charles was hurt on his second carry of the Chiefs’ 24-17 loss to Denver over the weekend, and Berry left the game later in the first half. X-rays came back negative but Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday that he could not provide a timetable for their return.

The loss of Charles and Berry means the Chiefs (0-2) are down seven starters to injuries and suspensions. Those seven players have combined to start 355 games, play in 492 games and appear in nine Pro Bowls over 43-plus seasons in the NFL.
