O’Brien named MIAA Special Team’s Athlete of the Week

Fort Hays State’s kicker/punter Drew O’ Brien is this week’s MIAA Special Team’s Athlete of the Week. O’Brien was a perfect 2-of-2 on field goal attempts in the Tigers 48-13 win at Northeastern State. He connected from 41 yards and 38 yards in the second quarter, pushing the FHSU lead to 10-6 and then 13-6. He also had three punts go for an average of 44.7 yards, two that went 50 or more yards with 53 as his best effort. He averaged 60.8 yards on kickoffs.

He had three receptions for eight yards and a touchdown and had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He set four single-game school records and tied a career-record in the process. His kickoff return for a touchdown was the third of his career, tying the UCM career record.

Central Oklahoma defensive back Cody Jones is the Defensive Athlete of the Week. Jones came up with two big interceptions during UCO’s 26-17 upset of Missouri Western. The junior cornerback returned the first one 41 yards to the MWSU four-yard-line late in the first half to set up a short UCO field goal that got the Bronchos within 14-10 at halftime and he sealed the win with a 42-yard touchdown return on the final play of the game. Jones added three unassisted tackles, including one for a four-yard loss, and broke up another pass.

Broncos fend off Chiefs with goal-line stand

By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Pro Football Writer

DENVER (AP) — It took the Denver Broncos three tries to put away the Kansas City Chiefs.

Terrance Knighton batted away Alex Smith’s fourth-and-goal pass to Dwayne Bowe with 15 seconds left, preserving the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the scrappy Chiefs on Sunday.

The Broncos (2-0) thought they had sealed the win twice earlier on the drive.

Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs

Aqib Talib’s pick-6 was negated by Quanterus Smith’s hold. Then, Nate Irving’s fumble recovery following DeMarcus Ware’s sack and strip was ruled an incomplete pass after a review.

The Chiefs (0-2), without All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles for much of the game, converted 11 of 16 third-down opportunities overall. They just couldn’t capitalize in the biggest moments as the Broncos mustered two goal-line stands for the second straight week.

Peyton Manning was 21 of 26 for 242 yards and three TDs, but the Broncos had the ball for less than 10 minutes in the second half.

Smith was 26 of 42 for 255 yards, and Knile Davis ran 22 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas City.

Charles left with an ankle injury in the first half, as did safety Eric Berry. These ailments came one week after three Chiefs suffered season-ending injuries.

Without Wes Welker for the second straight game and facing a defense that lost Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and tackle Mike DeVito to torn Achilles tendons last week, Manning targeted his tight ends again.

He found Julius Thomas and Jacob Tamme for 4-yard TDs in the first half. Thomas became the first tight end in franchise history to catch four TD passes in the first two games.

Manning also threw a 12-yarder to Demaryius Thomas, who pinned the football on his left shoulder blade with cornerback Chris Owens draping him.

Emmanuel Sanders led the Broncos with eight catches for 108 yards, the first 100-yard game of his career.

The Broncos head to Seattle next week with a 2-0 record, if not exactly a head of steam, to face the Seahawks, who handed them a Super Bowl shellacking and then talked trash about them in the offseason.

Denver GM John Elway retooled his ground game and embarked on a defensive makeover after that 43-8 Super Bowl loss. Yet, the Broncos have been unable to salt away big leads or get off the field consistently.

They have come up big when backed up near their goal line, though.

Smith led the Chiefs on a 19-play drive that ate up 10 minutes coming out of halftime. They came up empty after getting to the Denver 4 on the strength of five third-down conversions.

An offensive holding call and linebacker Brandon Marshall’s sack dropped them back to the 19. Cairo Santos was wide right on a 37-yard field goal attempt.

Santos, who beat out incumbent veteran Ryan Succop with a strong leg in training camp, also failed to kick a touchback later in the game, and Bubba Caldwell returned it 54 yards, setting up a score.

The Chiefs got it right the next time, however, converting all three third downs on a 14-play drive that covered 90 yards and chewed up nearly eight minutes. The key was Anthony Fasano’s bobbling 22-yard grab to the Broncos 25.

Davis trotted in from 4 yards, pulling Kansas City to 21-17 with 7:11 left. He also had a 2-yard TD run in the first half.

Caldwell’s big kickoff return set up Brandon McManus’ 20-yard field goal that put Denver ahead by seven with 3:27 remaining.

Charles left after running just twice for 4 yards and catching one pass for 8 yards. Kansas City was trying to get him more involved after giving him just seven carries against Tennessee in the opener. Charles rushed for 1,287 yards a season ago, which was third most in the NFL.

Demaryius Thomas had an 80-yard TD catch negated when right tackle Chris Clark was whistled for being downfield.

Nava hits slam, Red Sox rally past skidding Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Daniel Nava hit a grand slam, Xander Bogaerts added a three-run shot and the Boston Red Sox rallied past the skidding Kansas City Royals 8-4 on Sunday.

Kansas City blew a four-run lead and dropped three of four to the last-place Red Sox.

The Royals fell 1 1-2 games behind Detroit, which beat Cleveland, in the AL Central. Kansas City is in the thick of the wild-card race.

The Red Sox chased Jason Vargas (11-9) with one out in the sixth after Mookie Betts and Bogaerts singled. Reliever Aaron Crow walked Yoenis Cespedes to load the bases and struck out Allen Craig.

Nava hit Crow’s next pitch into the Red Sox bullpen for his second career grand slam and a 7-4 lead.

Bogaerts homered in the third and got three hits. He also had a sacrifice fly and drove in four runs, giving him 11 RBIs in his past 15 games.

Joe Kelly (3-2) gave up five consecutive hits and four runs in the second, but nothing else in six innings. The Royals loaded the bases in the ninth off Edward Mujica, but Lorenzo Cain struck out to end the game.

Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer in the second, and Omar Infante’s grounder scored another run in the inning.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Red Sox: INF-OF Brock Holt (concussion) remains sidelined and is having vision problems.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy (sore shoulder) made 20 throws with no discomfort in a bullpen session. Manager Ned Yost said they would check on how Duffy feels Monday and make a decision on whether he will start Tuesday against the White Sox. … DH Josh Willingham (groin strain) has not played since Thursday.

UP NEXT

Red Sox: After an off-day Monday, the 10-game trip continues Tuesday with the first of three games at Pittsburgh, another playoff-contending club. Rookie right-hander Anthony Ranaudo will start the series opener.

Royals: Staff ace James Shields, who has a career-high 18 1-3 inning scoreless streak, will start the series opener against the visiting White Sox. Shields hasn’t done well against Chicago SS Alexei Ramirez, who has a .412 batting average with two home runs in 51 at-bats against him.

FHSU Athletics

The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer team shutout South Dakota Mines in a 2-0 victory to close out the MIAA/GNAC Soccer Challenge in Rapid City, S.D., on Sunday (Sept. 14).

The Tigers (2-1-1) tookr the lead less than 10 minutes into the game, when Clifton broke into the scoring column at 6:19.  Cole hit a low cross to Clifton in the box, who scored on a one touch shot from five yards out.

Kent Freund posted his first shutout of the season between the pipes, picking up seven saves.  One of those saves, a penalty kick save in the 84th minute, kept the Hardrockers off the board and prevented a tie score late in the game

Clifton’s second goal of the day followed Freund’s penalty kick save, solidifying the Tigers victory.  At 86:46, Clifton broke away from the SD Mines defense, finding the lower left corner of the net from 18 yards out.

Defensively, Eric Hymer, Drew Wilson, Luan Silva and Carlos Linares played all 90 minutes in the backfield, limiting the Hardrockers to 13 shots (7 on goal).

Fort Hays State opens MIAA play this Thursday (Sept. 18) on the road against No. 7 Northeastern State.  Game time is set for 7 p.m., in Tahlequah, Okla.

FHSU women’s soccer closes road trip with loss at UC-Colorado Springs

FHSU Athletics

The Tigers’ women’s soccer team closed out its four-game season opening road trip with a 2-1 loss at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Fort Hays State (2-2), which put up 10 shots (six on goal), struck first with a goal in the opening three minutes, but were unable to hold off the Mountain Lions (1-2), who had 15 shots.

Kelsey Steffens got things started at 2:56 by scoring her third goal of the season, assisted by Mallory Diedrich. Steffens took a pass from Diederich and dribbled around a UCCS defender before chipping it over the oncoming goalkeeper, Grace Ramsden.

UCCS tied it in the 37th minute, as Michaela Mansfield hit the equalizer from the top of the box, assisted by Bailee Jameson.

Tied 1-1 at the break, FHSU couldn’t slow down a UCCS attack that had 10 shots in the second half as the Mountain Lions hit an eventual game winner at 51:07, off a corner kick.  Hannah Levett was credited with the goal, capitalizing on a scramble in front of the net.

Hailey Davey and Kylee Loneker each had three shots (two on goal) for the Tigers, while keeper Kristen Thompson put up three saves in 90 minutes.

Fort Hays State returns to FHSU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 19, for its MIAA opener versus Nebraska-Kearney.  Game time is set for 6 p.m., in Hays, Kan.

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Treveon Albert threw for three touchdowns and ran for two others leading the Fort Hays State Tigers to a 48-13 win over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Albert, who didn’t start the game at quarterback but took all of the snaps under center in the second half after Kevin Spain went down with an ankle injury, scored on touchdowns runs of four and nine yards. He hooked up with running back Kenneth Iheme on a 27-yard TD pass. Albert also hit Isaiah Maxi on an 11-yard strike and Ed Williams on a 12-yard TD pass.

Chris Brown Postgame Interview

Northeastern State grabbed the early lead with a 12-play 80-yard scoring drive on their first possession. Albert first touchdown run late in the first quarter tied the game. Drew O’Brien’s extra point gave the Tigers the lead for good. O’Brien would kick field goals of 41 and 38 yards to put the Tigers up 13-6 early in the second quarter. Albert’s strike to Iheme gave FHSU a 20-6 lead at the half.

Treveon Albert / Micheal Terry Postgame Interview

The Tigers finished with 408 yards of offense, 197 on the ground and 211 through the air and had the ball for 35:29, one week after having it for just over 19 minutes in their season opening loss to Central Oklahoma.

Fort Hays State improves to 1-1 both overall and in MIAA play. They are back at home next Saturday to host Lindenwood at 7pm.

Hays Football Rolls To Win Over Great Bend

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays Indians were able to take advantage of multiple Great Bend mistakes on their way to a 49-6 win Friday night. After a three and out and punt that resulted in negative yardage, Hays needed just two plays to score from 16 yards out and take 7-0 lead with 9:40 remaining in the first quarter following a Alex Delton 13 yard touchdown run. Great Bend punted on their second possession after three plays to set up the Indians at the Panther 35 following a personal foul by the Panthers on the return. Hays needed just five plays to navigate the 35 yards to increase the lead to 14-0 on a Dalton Stout one yard plunge. Hays scored pushed the lead to three touchdowns before the end of the first quarter when Shane Berens picked off a pass and scored from 25 yards out. The Indians led 21-0 after the first quarter and cruised rest of the way.

Following a scoreless second quarter, the Indians struck on the first play of the second half when Delton broke off an 82 yard touchdown score grabbing a 28-0 lead. The troubles that Great Bend experienced in the first half continued in half number two. Isaiah Blackmon stripped and recovered the football for the Indians on the Panthers first drive of the second half leading to a seven play scoring drive capped by a two yard Stout score pushing the lead to 35-0.

Perhaps the craziest touchdown of the season happened on the Indians next drive. Delton threw a 44 yard pass to junior Keith Dryden and as Dryden fought for the end zone he fumbled the ball at the two yard line. Tight End Shane Berens who had scored on a defensive play earlier in the game scooped up the loose ball and dove into the end zone give the Indians a 42-0 lead with 4:06 remaining in the third.

The Indians final score of the night came midway through the fourth quarter when Adam Klaus scored on a four yard run capping a four play 25 yard drive following a fumble recovery by Berens.

Great Bend would get their first points of the season on fourth and goal when Trenton Uselton scored on a three yard run for the final 49-6 tally.

Hays rushed for 208 yards and passed for 133, totaling 341 yards on the night. Great Bend was held to 144 total yards only 11 of which came through the air.

The game was also a night of penalties and turnovers. Hays was penalized 12 times for 105 yards and Great Bend 11 times for 109 yards. Hays lost four fumbles and Great Bend totaled six turnovers, four interceptions and two fumbles.

Hays is 2-0 and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Great Bend drops to 0-2, 0-1.

Hays plays at home for the first time this season as they take on the Liberal on Friday Night.

Ellis outlasts TMP

By JEREMY McGUIRE
HaysPost

Ellis 26, TMP 21

After being shut out a week ago, the Ellis Railroaders were able to score 26 points and hold on late for  a 26 to 21 win over the TMP Monarchs in Hays.  The Railroaders scored six points in both the third and fourth quarters and led 26-7 with 11:35 left to go in the game.  That is when things became very interesting.

The Monarchs would battle back.  TMP’s Max Megaffin would score the first of two rushing touchdowns with a 1 yard plunge with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter.  TMP would get the football back following an Ellis turnover and drove 44 yards in eight plays and capped the drive with another Megaffin touchdown, this time from nine yards out.  Following the Jack You extra point the Monarchs trailed 26 to 21 and would have one more chance.

TMP took the ball at their own 16 yard line with just over three minutes to play and proceeded to drive the ball down the field.  Inside the Ellis 40 yard line with just over one minute to play the Railroaders would force their fifth turnover of the game on a Bryce Keithley interception.  With the loss TMP drops their second straight game to start the season.  Ellis is now one and one.
