KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tough to catch the Kansas City Royals when they are leading after six innings. Greg Holland leads one of the majors’ best bullpens.
Ventura pitched into the seventh inning and three relievers shut the door in a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night.
Kansas City Royals (Chris Vleisides)
“With Ventura throwing the ball so well, it allowed to get us into the seventh inning with our big three spot with a lead,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We were in good shape from that point.”
The Big Three — Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Holland — combined for 2 2-3 hitless innings after Ventura departed. The Royals are 54-3 when taking a lead into the seventh.
“We had a chance until they brought in Herrera, Davis and Holland, three outstanding arms,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “They might be three of the best arms in baseball.”
Ventura (11-9) allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits in 6 1-3 innings. The right-hander, who was skipped on his previous turn in the rotation due to a sore back, struck out seven and walked four.
Salvador Perez homered and drove in three runs for Kansas City, which finished with 10 hits.
Holland struck out two in a perfect ninth, earning his 41st save in 43 chances. It was Holland’s third straight day of work.
“It’s kind of a double-edged sword for me,” he said. “We’re in a playoff race and you never know when you’re going to get another chance to go to the playoffs. Kansas City hasn’t been there in a while, a long time exactly.
“You want to do everything you can, but you also want to be smart about it. If I go out there at 40 or 50 percent and don’t get the job done because of it, that’s me being selfish for wanting to pitch. You’ve got to understand the situation that if you need a day, you’ve got to express that to the coaching staff.”
Perez, who had three hits, went deep in the third with Alex Gordon aboard. His two-out double in the first scored Gordon, who had singled and swiped second.
Colby Lewis (9-12) pitched seven innings for Texas, yielding four runs and nine hits. The right-hander had thrown a complete game in winning each of his previous two road starts.
“I missed with a couple of pitches early in the game but I sharpened up later,” Lewis said.
Carlos Peguero, who was just brought up from Triple-A Omaha, doubled in the fifth and scored on Mike Moustakas’ single to give the Royals a 4-0 advantage.
Texas responded with a run in the sixth on Adrian Beltre’s groundout. Tomas Telis and Michael Choice each had an RBI single in the seventh, cutting the Royals’ lead to one run.
TWO CHALLENGES
The Rangers lost a replay review and won another one. With runners on the corners in the second, Rangers catcher Tomas Telis grounded into a double play to end the inning. Washington wanted a review, believing Telis was safe, but the ruling on the field was upheld. In the seventh, Jarrod Dyson doubled for the Royals, but went over the bag. Umpire Fieldin Culbreth said Dyson got back safely. A review overruled him and Dyson was out.
UP NEXT:
Rangers: LHP Derek Holland will make his first start of the season after having knee surgery on Jan. 10. He went 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA in six rehab starts in the minors.
Royals: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (10-10) goes for Kansas City. Guthrie is 2-0 with a 4.29 ERA in his last three starts.
TRAINER’S ROOM:
Rangers: RHP Miles Mikolas, who was skipped his previous start with shoulder fatigue, has not progressed and may not pitch Thursday in his next scheduled start.
Royals: DH Josh Willingham has not played since Friday because of a bad back. He will try to swing the bat Tuesday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith didn’t have much choice when he was traded from San Francisco to Kansas City last year.
He had the final say when it came to staying with the Chiefs, though.
One day after signing a four-year extension that should solidify his future through the 2018 season, Smith expressed relief at being able to focus solely on football – rather than negotiations that had been going on for months, and that were threatening to bleed into the regular season.
Smith said he made it clear to his agent, Tom Condon, he wanted an agreement done before the start of the season. Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said that was also his goal.
The Chiefs open the regular season against Tennessee on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jordan Schafer and the Minnesota Twins finally broke it open in the 10th inning.
Schafer tied a career high with four RBIs, leading the Twins to an 11-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
Bruce Chen (2-4), the sixth pitcher for the AL Central-leading Royals, gave up five hits and walked two in the 10th.
“I didn’t make good pitches and they get base hit after base hit after base hit,” Chen said.
Eduardo Nunez singled home the go-ahead run and Schafer had a two-run single. Brian Dozier added a two-run double and Kurt Suzuki capped the burst with an RBI double for his third hit of the game.
“It was another one where we could have won or lost,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We could have won all three or lost all three. Tonight was no different. We hung in there and finally had the big inning. It was a nice win for us after two tough losses.”
Minnesota had lost its last four games against Kansas City and seven of eight overall in the season series. Schafer had three hits while extending his hitting streak to eight games.
“Anytime you can help your team, it’s good, whether it’s with defense or stolen bases or scoring runs,” said Schafer, who stole a base and scored two runs.
Anthony Swarzak (3-1) picked up the victory.
Alex Gordon homered off Ryan Pressly to lead off the Royals seventh, tying it at 5.
Twins left-hander Tommy Milone was pulled after 5 1-3 innings, giving up four runs and nine hits. He is winless in four starts since the Twins acquired him in a July 31 trade with Oakland.
Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who was 5-1 in his previous six starts, exited after six innings. He gave up five runs and nine hits.
ROYALS ADD NIX
The Royals claimed INF Jayson Nix off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he was 4 for 36 in 16 games. Nix, 32, began the season with Philadelphia and also played in the minors with Durham, the Rays’ Triple-A club.
DOZIER’S HOT
Dozier went 3 for 5 for his ninth three-hit game of the season. He is hitting .400 with eight RBIs since Aug 22.
STREAKING HERRERA
Royals RHP Kelvin Herrera pitched the eighth to extend his scoreless inning streak to 23 1-3 innings.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Twins: 1B Joe Mauer didn’t start for the first time since returning Aug. 11 after missing 34 games with a right oblique strain. “I watched him last night,” Gardenhire said. “I thought he was dragging a little bit. You’ve got to do it for him. He’s in the training room, getting treatment every day like everybody else.” Mauer walked as a pinch hitter in the 10th and stayed in the game to play 1B.
Royals: LHP Scott Downs (stiff neck) was activated from the disabled list. â?¦ 1B Eric Hosmer (fractured right hand) participated in batting practice for the first time since going on the disabled list Aug. 1. â?¦ RHP Michael Mariot (right hamstring injury) was recalled from Triple-A Omaha and transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
UP NEXT
Twins: Rookie RHP Trevor May (0-3) is looking for his first big league victory Friday night at Baltimore. He gave up five runs and 11 hits in 5 1-3 innings in an 8-6 loss to Detroit on Saturday.
Royals: LHP Jason Vargas will start Friday night’s series opener against the Indians. He has a 1.24 ERA in his 10 wins and a 6.29 ERA in his six losses.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien each threw for two touchdowns in their competition to back up starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas Chiefs 34-14 in a preseason finale Thursday night.
Kansas City Chiefs
Flynn threw for 102 yards and Tolzien had 139 in splitting reps by quarter in the evening’s most closely watched position battle. Coach Mike McCarthy could keep both players anyway a season after Rodgers missed seven weeks with a collarbone injury.
The Chiefs’ defense looked lost at times. Kansas City also had seven penalties in the first half, which ended with Green Bay up by 13.
Packers undrafted free agent Jayrone Elliott got his fifth sack of the preseason, beating Chiefs first-string tackle Donald Stephenson.
Chiefs receiver A.J. Jenkins made an impressive, diving 45-yard catch before leaving with a concussion.
Alex Delton has been a hot commodity in college football circles over the past 18 months. Delton had already let his intentions be known early in 2014, that he was going to attend Kansas State University. Thursday at Hays High School, he made it as official as he could by signing his scholarship agreement. He will still have to sign a National Letter of Intent in February 2015.
Signing in late August does two things for Delton. First it puts his mind to rest about picking where to continue his education and football career. Secondly, it allows him to attend KSU in the spring of 2015 and get a jump at competing for the quarterback job with the Wildcats. Alex worked out a plan with administrators and counselors at Hays High to graduate in December.
In his Indian career, Delton has thrown for 1,878 yards and 26 touchdowns against 9 interceptions. Delton is a dual-threat, rushing for 1,390 yards and 21 scores. Alex though garnered most of the college scout’s attention at camps that he attended, including the Under Armour camp in Florida.
While Delton could spend time talking simply about himself, he instead spends time praising coaches, family and teammates for helping him achieve his dream of playing college football.
Alex Delton
Delton enters his third season as the starting quarterback for the Indians. He played limited time as a freshman as a backup QB and missed part of his junior season to a leg injury.
New Indian head coach Bo Black has the unique experience of not only having Delton on his team for 2014, but also coached against him the past two seasons.
Bo Black
Former Indian head coach and current Hutchinson Salthawk coach Ryan Cornelsen made the trip to watch his former quarterback sign. Cornelsen was asked by Delton to attend Thursday’s signing, but didn’t agree to make the trip until coach Black had given his approval first.
Ryan Cornelsen
The Hays High Indians will kick-off the 2014 season next Friday, as the travel to Olathe. The Indians will take on the Northwest Ravens at 5:30 on 96.9 KFIX and hayspost.com.
