K-State’s Truman makes world stop in weight room

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Every school has “max-out day,” when guys try to better their best in a variety of weightlifting exercises. No. 20 Kansas State is no different.

But when Jonathan Truman settles under the bar, everybody else in the room stops what they’re doing to watch. The former walk-on-turned starting linebacker is quite possibly the pound-for-pound strongest player to have ever come through Bill Snyder’s program.

Truman has been known to bench press more than 430 pounds and squat more 540, numbers that are impressive for anyone but even more so considering he’s just 5-foot-11, 215 pounds.

In fact, that weight training is a big reason he’ll be starting for the second straight year when Kansas State opens its season Aug. 30 against Stephen F. Austin.

FHSU Men’s soccer picked second in MIAA preseason poll

FHSU Athletics

No. 23 Fort Hays State was picked to finish second in the MIAA Men’s Soccer Preseason Poll, released Thursday (Aug. 21), identical to its finish last year. The Tigers are coming off their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Brett Parker, going 12-5-3 in 2013 and reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Super Region 3 bracket.

Among the many returners for the Tigers in 2013, nine started at least 17 games last year. That group includes All-American Honorable mention Diego Cabral, a senior midfielder, who lead the team with seven assists while finishing second on the team in points (23) and goals (eight).

Cabral and five other Tigers started all 20 games for FHSU last year, joining seniors Tanner Brock, David Lucio (four assists last year), Eric Hymer (1,894 minutes played in 2013) and Carlos Linares, and sophomore Drew Wilson. Brock and Hymer were All-MIAA First Team selections in 2013, while Cabral was All-MIAA Second Team and Linares and now-junior Michael Cole (five goals, one assist in 2013) earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors.

In the net for FHSU, the 2013 MIAA Freshman of the Year (and All-MIAA Second Team selection) Jason Babyak and now-senior Kent Freund split time at goalkeeper last year. Babyak compiled a 9-3-2 record as a starter with six shutouts, allowing 1.01 goals per game. Freund was 3-2-1 as a starter, shutting out opponents three times and allowing just five goals (0.80 per game).

Mauricio Castorino and Maurizio Costa are among several newcomers who will help FHSU overcome the graduation of an All-American (Ricardo Yeverino) and a two-year All-Region performer (Daniel Peralta).

Lindenwood, which won the MIAA Championship in a shootout over the Tigers last year, and knocked FHSU out of the NCAA Tournament, was picked first with 35 points and five first-place votes, narrowly ahead of Fort Hays State and Northeastern State, each tied for second with 29 points and one first-place vote.

Upper Iowa, the other MIAA tournament competitor last year, was picked fourth with 20 points, ahead of Harding’s 16 tallies. Southern Nazarene (12 points) and Southwest Baptist (six points) closed out the poll.

FHSU hosts Midland University in an exhibition on Thursday (Aug. 21) at 7 p.m., with the regular season action set to begin Sept. 5against Colorado State University-Pueblo, at the Days Inn Soccer Classic in Hays, Kan.

McBride, De La Rosa lift Rockies past Royals

By PAT GRAHAM
AP Sports Writer

DENVER (AP) — Danny Duffy chose to find fault with his fastball rather than his fielder.

Duffy was cruising along until a throwing error opened the door for a grand slam by Matt McBride that sent the Colorado Rockies to a 5-2 win over the rolling Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

“I feel terrible for the mistake I made,” Duffy said.

With one swing, McBride derailed the Royals’ roll, snapping their three-game winning streak. Kansas City saw its lead in the AL Central shrink to one over Detroit.

Duffy was in command most of the night as he allowed five hits and five runs, one earned, in seven innings. After getting two quick outs in the sixth, third baseman Christian Colon fielded a grounder by Nolan Arenado and threw a one-hopper that first baseman Billy Butler couldn’t scoop. Wilin Rosario singled and Corey Dickerson drew a walk to set the stage for McBride.

Another hard-luck loss for Duffy (8-11), who’s the only AL starter with a losing record and an ERA under three runs.

“I can’t lose focus like I did on that one pitch,” said Duffy, whose team finished 15-5 in interleague play. “He knew it was coming. If I locate that better then it’s probably a ground ball.”

Colon shouldered the blame, too.

“I wish I could take it back and make the play,” he said. “I should have made the play.”

It was McBride’s first homer since Sept. 25, 2012, and third of his career. He was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs the day before after what’s been a tumultuous past two seasons. He missed a big chunk of 2013 after undergoing neck surgery and was out earlier this year with a broken foot.

“Another guy with a great story, who’s been through a lot,” Rockies manage Walt Weiss said.

That was more than enough for Jorge De La Rosa (13-8), who allowed five hits and two run against his former team. He also got the Royals to hit into four double plays, tying a franchise record for most by a single pitcher in a game.

Even more, he improved to 9-2 at Coors Field — a place that’s haunted many a pitcher, but not the hard-throwing lefty.

“I like to pitch here,” De La Rosa said. “It’s a challenge for me every time I pitch here.”

GORDON GOES YARD

Usually, when Alex Gordon homers, the Royals win this season. They’re 11-2 when he goes deep in a game.

Gordon’s solo shot in the second was his 14th homer of the season.

CHALLENGING CHANGEUP

This was just the second time De La Rosa faced his old team. He spent two seasons with the Royals before being dealt to Colorado in 2008 for cash considerations.

He was cashing in on his changeup to get out of one jam after another.

“His changeup, that’s his moneymaker,” Weiss said. “It’s a great pitch.”

Royals manager Ned Yost seconded that opinion.

“His changeup is a killer,” said Yost, whose team has won 22 of their last 28 games. “It’s a hard pitch to pick up.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: C Salvador Perez was a late scratch because of tightness in his right knee. He will have a precautionary MRI on Thursday.

Rockies: OF Micheal Cuddyer was out another day with a strained left hamstring. He said he’s confident he will be back in the lineup Friday.

Rockies: The Rockies have their second off day this week on Thursday. They begin a three-game series with Miami on Friday. LHP Franklin Morales (5-6) will get the start after missing his last turn in the rotation for the birth of his daughter.

Charles, Bowe remain out of Chiefs practice

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Add rookie running back De’Anthony Thomas to a lengthy list of Chiefs players who are missing practice as the team prepares for its preseason game Saturday night against Minnesota.

The electrifying Thomas missed Wednesday’s workout with spasms in his hamstring.

Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles remained out with his foot injury. Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry is out with a heel injury and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is dealing with a quad injury.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid declined to say after practice whether any of them will be available for the Vikings game, when the starters are expected to play into the third quarter.

FHSU picked seventh in MIAA women’s soccer preseason poll

FHSU Athletics

The Fort Hays State Women’s Soccer team was picked to finish seventh in the 2014 MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, releasedWednesday (Aug. 20) by the league office.

FHSU was tabbed two spots ahead of its finish last season, when the Tigers were 7-8-3 (3-5-3 MIAA) and narrowly missed a postseason berth.

This season, FHSU features a strong core of experienced returners, mixed in with newcomers set to make an immediate impact.

In the backfield, senior Dani Harris was an All-MIAA selection last season and anchors a strong group of returners. Though listed as a defender, Harris was tied for the team lead in goals (four), assists (two) and points (10) last year, and will be one of five seniors on the team, joined by Jamie Babyak, Hailey Davey, Margaret Meier and Jordan Shaw.

Harris and junior Gabrielle Makatura both started all 18 games for the Tigers last year, joining Mallory Diedrich, Babyak and Regnier as upperclassman defenders that limited opponents to 20 goals last year.

Offensively, Davey (two goals, four assists in 2013) and junior Ember Albertson (one assist) will look for breakout seasons on a team that had 26 goals last season. Shaw and junior Jordan Hester will help manage a group of newcomers that includes Kelsey Steffens and Fiorella Fustagno, who have impressed thus far in preseason.

A crowded pack of upperclassman will compete for playing time in the midfield, with Meier as the group’s lone senior. Juniors Cenayda Guzman (two goals in 2013) and Kylee Loneker, who had three goals last year, saw extensive playing time last year in addition to sophomore Hannah Jurgens. Jurgens tallied eight points (two goals and four assists) as a freshman.

Between the pipes, redshirt freshman Kristen Thompson, junior transfer Kimi Kaniaupio and freshman Abbie Flax are fighting for a starting spot, as both goalkeepers from 2013 are no longer with the squad.

Central Missouri, the 2013 MIAA regular season champion, tops the poll with eleven first place votes and 121 total points, followed by Southwest Baptist, picked second with 100 points. SBU won last year’s MIAA tournament in overtime over Central Oklahoma, which is picked third and just two points behind SBU, earning one first place vote. Picked fourth, Northeastern State grabbed 91 points, well ahead of fifth-picked Washburn (72 points).

From there, things are close with just two points separating WU, Lindenwood (71 points) and the Tigers (70), in seventh.

Closing out the final five spots is Nebraska-Kearney (50 points), Emporia State (47 points), Missouri Southern (30 points), Northwest Missouri (27 points) and Missouri Western (15 points).

Fort Hays State hosts Kansas Wesleyan in exhibition action this Saturday (Aug. 23) at 11 a.m., and will kick off the regular season on Friday, Sept. 5 in Marshall, Minn., against No. 21 Southwest Minnesota State.

Infante has 3 doubles to lead Royals past Rockies

By MICHAEL KELLY
Associated Press

DENVER — Omar Infante had three doubles and drove in four runs to help the streaking Kansas City Royals beat the Colorado Rockies 7-4 on Tuesday night.

James Shields pitched six solid innings to get the win for the Royals, who have now won 21 of 26 after getting to Colorado rookie Tyler Matzek in the seventh.

Matzek (2-9) came into Tuesday with a 9.60 ERA in August but was having his best outing since blanking Pittsburgh over seven innings on July 26 when he ran into trouble with two outs in the seventh. Matzek got the first two outs before allowing a pinch-hit single to Josh Willingham and walking Nori Aoki.

Adam Ottavino came on and gave up consecutive doubles to Infante and Salvador Perez to give the Royals a 4-2 lead.

The Royals scored three more runs in the eighth off Colorado’s bullpen. Infante had a two-run double with the bases loaded.

It was the second time in his career he has had three doubles in a game. The last time, May 27, 2004, came against the Royals when he was playing for Detroit.

That made a winner of Shields (12-6), who allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out six. He wasn’t sharp, allowing base runners in every inning but his last and struck out Drew Stubbs with the bases loaded to end the fourth.

Drew Stubbs and Nolan Arenado each had three hits and a home run for Colorado.

Arenado went deep in the fifth to give Colorado a 2-1 lead and Stubbs hit a two-run homer in the ninth, when the Rockies mounted a rally. Greg Holland came on and threw one pitch to record his 39th save in 40 chances.

Justin Morneau, back in the lineup after missing two games with a stiff neck, gave Colorado a 1-0 lead with a double-play grounder in the first.

Kansas City tied it in the fourth on Lorenzo Cain’s RBI double to.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Perez returned to the lineup after being pulled from Monday’s game with a sore knee.

Rockies: OF Michael Cuddyer was scratched from the lineup with a sore left hamstring. Manager Walt Weiss said it wasn’t a long-term issue, adding that playing a doubleheader Sunday led to the soreness. Cuddyer hit for the cycle in the second game of the Rockies’ sweep.

UP NEXT

Royals: Red-hot Kansas City will go for a season sweep of the Rockies with lefty Danny Duffy on the mound. Duffy (8-10) has won a career-high three straight starts.

Rockies: Colorado’s lone bright spot on the mound, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, will face his former team Wednesday. De La Rosa (12-8) made 33 starts for the Royals in 2006-07 before joining the Rockies. He has accounted for a quarter of Colorado’s wins this season.

With Chiefs’ Charles out, Davis, Gray get chances

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles was still held out of Chiefs practice Tuesday after hurting his foot in an accident while moving out of the dorms last week.

Charles did not make the trip to Carolina for Sunday’s preseason game after getting hurt on the final day of practice at Missouri Western. The Chiefs resumed training camp at their own facility in Kansas City in anticipation of Saturday night’s game against Minnesota.

With Charles out, Knile Davis and Cyrus Gray have been getting the majority of snaps.

Other players not participating Tuesday included safety Eric Berry (heel), wide receivers Dwayne Bowe (quad) and Junior Hemingway (hip), linebackers Joe Mays (wrist) and Josh Martin (quad), offensive tackle Ryan McKee (knee) and defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo (hamstring).

Kinberger ranks first all-time in win percentage among coaches in FHSU history, at .677, and is second all-time in wins to Ed Wilkerson’s 142. Additionally, the Tigers’ 47-12 record in 2013 was the winningest season in program history and Kinberger was named MIAA Coach of the Year, prior to her team winning the 2013 MIAA Tournament. Kinberger also served three years as an assistant with the Tiger program.

Under Kinberger’s guidance, the Tigers were ranked nationally for the first time in school history, reaching as high as No. 10 in the in the NFCA Top 25 in 2013.

Graduate Assistant Coach Maddie Holub will be continuing her coaching career alongside Kinberger at Saint Leo.

Fort Hays State Athletics Director Curtis Hammeke announced that a search for Kinberger’s replacement is in progress.

FHSU’s Erbert excited for return in 2014

After winning six of their final seven games a year ago to finish with a winning record, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Fort Hays State football team, however one player is probably more excited than the rest. Junior offensive lineman Matt Erbert was injured during the Tigers first scrimmage last season and had to sit out the entire 2013 season.

Erbert is back in uniform and was on the field for the Tigers first scrimmage Sunday morning and looking forward to his return to the starting lineup.

Despite not having a starter, the offensive line does have experience with four players having started 10 or more games in their career including Erbert who made 10 starts as a freshman in 2012. Sophomore Luke Edney started in all 11 games last season while sophomore Mason Dickey played in all 11 games and made 10 starts last season. Junior Jarred Stindt also returns after making 10 starts as a freshman and playing in seven games last season.
