Larks fall short in Liberal

Robert Dugger’s double drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and lifts the Liberal Bee Jays to a 6-4 win over the Hays Larks Saturday night at Brent Gould Field in Liberal, snapping the Larks five-game win streak. The Bee Jays add an unearned run in the eighth.

The Larks scored their first run on a Kevin Czarnecki single. They tie the game on Tyler Detmer’s three-run homer in the fourth.

Jake Fromson takes the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, striking out four and walking none.

The Larks are now 16-10 overall and 12-10 in the Jayhawk League. The two wrap up the two-game series Sunday night.

 

Eagles advance to WWF tourney semifinals

The Hays Eagles score four runs in the fourth inning then add two more in the sixth and beat Longmont-Erie (Colo.) 8-3 to advance to Sunday afternoon’s semifinals of the Wild West Fest tournament. The Eagles improve to 4-0 in the tourney and are now 21-6 overall. A win Sunday at the HHS Field would advance the Eagles to the tournament finals at 5pm at Larks Park.

Kade Parker picks up the complete game victory, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out seven and walking only one.

Trenton Henningson went 3-for-3 and scored two runs while Jake Sedbrook went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. His two-run double highlighted the Eagles four–run fourth inning.

 

Monarchs win streak comes to an end

The Hays Monarchs drop a pair of games to the MW Bruins Saturday at the Wild West Fest tournament, snapping their 10-game win streak. Bruins win the first contest 12-1 then turn around and win 4-2 in the quarterfinals ending the Monarchs run at 2-2. They are now 14-5 on the season.

The Monarchs fell behind 6-0 after two innings in the first game. Hays was held to just two hits and scored their lone run on Grant Romme’s RBI single in the third inning. Cameron Brin takes the loss, allowing seven runs (4 earned) on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Brin walked eight and struck out none.

In the tournament quarterfinals, the Bruins took advantage of four Monarchs errors in the second game, scoring single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth. Only one of the runs was earned. Liam Stults takes the loss, allowing one unearned run on six hits over six innings, striking out three and walking six. Kameron Schmidt and Dick Hockett both had two hits.

The Monarchs are off until Thursday when they travel to Great Bend for a doubleheader.

 

House records 1st major-league win for Indians in victory over Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — T.J. House allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings for his first major league win and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Saturday night.

House (1-2) scattered nine hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. The rookie left-hander was making the eighth appearance, and seventh start, of his career.

Michael Bourn’s leadoff homer sparked a three-run third inning while Nick Swisher’s bases-loaded single scored two runs in the fifth and finished Jeremy Guthrie (5-7).

Michael Brantley had three hits, including an RBI single in the eighth, for Cleveland.

Hays Eagles start 2-0 at WWF tournament

The Eagles Senior American Legion wins their first two games of the Wild West Fest tournament Friday. The Eagles defeat Rock Creek 5-4 in eight innings then knocked off Monument, Colorado 8-0 in five innings to move to 19-6 on the season.

Against Rock Creek, they rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Layne Downing two-out two-run single. Cole Schumacher then knocked in the game winning run with a two-out single in the eighth. Schumacher went 3-for-4 and Connor Rule also drove in two runs. Downing got the final out in the eighth for the win.

The Eagles score two in the third then six in the fourth against Monument. Layne Downing threw a three-hit shutout, striking out five and walking two. Cole Schumacher drove in three and Zack Legleiter had two RBIs.

 

Hays Monarchs 2-0 at WWF tournament

The Hays Monarchs go 2-0 Friday on the first day of the Wild West Fest tournament to run their win streak to 10 games. The Monarchs defeat the Wichita Grays 2-1 then defeat Canon City, Colorado 5-1. The Monarchs improve to 14-3 on the season.

Ryan Ruder’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 1-1 tie to lift the Monarchs past the Wichita Grays. Ryan Schippers put Hays up 1-0 with an RBI single in the third. The Grays tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Dick Hockett picks up the complete game victory allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts and five walks.

The Monarchs score three in the first then added single runs in the second and fourth against Canon City. Kameron Schmidt allowed the one-run on six hits while striking out nine and walking one for the complete game victory. Jordan Gottschalk and Ryan Schippers both had two hits and two RBIs.

 

Hays High soccer camp back on after volunteer steps forward

The Hays High soccer camps scheduled for later this month will go on.

Hays High Athletic Director Chris Michaelis said Thursday an individual has stepped up and volunteered to run the camps. The resignation of former boys and girls soccer coach Saul Hernandez led to the camp being temporarily postponed, until Jim Maska, an assistant coach with the team last season, volunteered to run the camps.

The Hays High team camp, for both boys and girls will run July 14 to 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at HHS.

The boys and girls youth camp will be held from July 21 to 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Registration forms will be available at Hays High beginning Tuesday, or they can be downloaded from the Hays High website.

Koeiman leads Larks to win over Dodge City

Zair Koeiman drove in four runs and Larks starter Ian Bentley allowed just two earned runs over six innings Wednesday night as Hays picks up an 11-5 win over the Dodge City A’s in Dodge City.

The A’s took advantage of a pair of early errors by the Larks and led 4-2 after three but in the fifth inning Hays rallied to tie the game at four with a two-run single by Zair Koeiman.

The Larks blew the game open with a five run sixth sparked by Ty Detmer’s two-run double.

Zair Koeiman was two-for-four with four RBIs and Derek Birginske was three-for-four with three runs scored in the Larks win.

Bentley allowed five runs, two earned and struck out six in six innings in his first appearance this summer for his first win of the summer.

Hays has won six of their last seven games and they improved to 16-9 overall and 12-9 in the Jayhawk League.

Larks have Thursday and Friday off before beginning a two-game series in Liberal Saturday and Sunday.

Hays Monarchs streak continues with win over Ellis

The Hays Monarchs Senior American Legion ran their winning streak to eight games Wednesday night with an 8-1 win over the Ellis in Hays.

The Monarchs scored the first run of the game on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. Hays added two more in the third on a pair of wild pitches to go up 3-0.

The Monarchs broke the game open with a three-run fifth.

Seven Hays pitchers combined to allow just one run as the Monarchs more to 12-3 on the season.

Ryan Ruder and Jordan Gottschalk both finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Monarchs open the Wild West Fest baseball tournament Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Wichita Greys at Hays High School.

Ellis plays Erie Colorado at 3 p.m. Friday at Hays High.

The Hays Senior Eagles open the tournament with Rock Creek Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Larks Park.

Vargas pitches Royals to victory, 4-0 over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Jason Vargas threw seven scoreless innings, Raul Ibanez homered in his second game for Kansas City and the Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-0 Wednesday.

Vargas (8-3) allowed four singles and two walks while striking out five, allowing only two runners from a diluted Twins lineup to reach second base.

Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson hit RBI singles in the second inning against Kevin Correia (4-10), and that was all Vargas needed.

With Joe Mauer missing, placed on the disabled list before the game because of a strained muscle on his right side, the Twins didn’t cause Vargas any trouble.

They were shut out for the sixth time this season and lost for the seventh time in their last nine games.

Larks rally for win over the Dodge City

The Hays Larks scored in all but two innings and pounded out 13 hits in an 8-3 win over the Dodge City A’s Tuesday night at Larks Park in Hays.

Trailing 3-0 in the third inning Ziar Koeiman led off the inning with a homerun. Tyler Lefler and Ty Detmer also added RBIs in the inning to tie the game at three.

The Eagles added one run in each of the next five innings to pick up the win.

Hays reliever David Koll allowed just one hit in two inning of relief for his third win of the season.

Ziar Koeiman was four-for-four with two homeruns and three RBI’s. Derrick Mount finished three-for-four and scored two runs in the win.

The Larks have won five of their last six games and they are now 15-9 overall and 11-9 in the Jayhawk League.

Hays travels to Dodge City Wednesday night for another matchup with the A’s.

Hays Eagles sweep Great Bend

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion swept Great Bend in a doubleheader Tuesday night in Great Bend.

Game 1: Hays 12 Great Bend 1

In the first game the Eagles scored six times in the first inning. Kade Parker got the scoring started with the two-run double and Jake Sedbrook also drove in two with a two-out single.

Hays added two runs in each of the next three innings and starter Brady Bieker allowed just one run in four innings for the 12-1 four inning run-rule victory.

Kade Parker was two-for-two with three RBIs and two runs scored. Layne Downing finished two-for-three with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 2: Hays 9 Great Bend 2

The Eagles used a pair of big innings in game two on their way to a 9-2 win.

In the Eagles three-run second inning Cole Schumaker singled in two runs and Trenton Henningsen also singled in a run.

Hays tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning behind a two-run single by Kade Parker.

Parker was two-for-two with two RBIs and scored three runs. Cole Schumaker and Trenton Henningsen also finished with two RBIs.

Marcus Altman allowed one run in four innings for his third win of the summer.

The Eagles improve to 17-6 with the win.

They are scheduled to host Dodge City for a doubleheader at Larks Park Wednesday evening.

Royals pitching struggles in loss to Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Joe Mauer drove in two runs before leaving with an injury, Eduardo Nunez homered and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2 Tuesday night.

Mauer extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth inning, but was noticeably limping as he ran to second base.

The team said he has a strained muscle on his right side and will be evaluated Wednesday. Ricky Nolasco (5-6) earned his first win in five starts, allowing one run and eight hits in six innings.

Eric Hosmer had four hits for the Royals.
