KU’s Wiggins, Embiid taken in first three picks of NBA Draft

NEW YORK (AP) – Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid become just the fourth teammates drafted in the first three picks since 1980 to be drafted in the first three picks.

The Cleveland Cavaliers used the first overall pick in the draft to select forward Andrew Wiggins, who averaged a Kansas freshman-record 17.1 points last season. Wiggins became the best option for the Cavs once Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his right foot shortly before the draft.

The 76ers snared Embiid with the third choice after the Milwaukee Bucks picked Duke freshman Jabari Parker. Embiid averaged 11 points, eight rebounds and 2.6 blocks as a Kansas freshman last season but missed the NCAA tournament due to a back injury.

Kentucky’s Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist were taken 1-2 in 2012.

The other college teammates taken in the top three since 1980 were Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon of Connecticut in 2004, and Jay Williams and Mike Dunleavy of Duke in 2002. They were both selected second and third.

The New York Knicks selected Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early with the 34th pick. The
6-foot-7 Early averaged 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds last season as senior, both team highs.

The NCAA released its attendance figures for the 2013-14 season and Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball ranked third nationally in average. Fort Hays State moved up seven spots in the rankings this year as it ranked 10th nationally in 2012-13. FHSU averaged 2,717 fans per contest this past season.

Fort Hays State heads three MIAA schools listed in the top 15 nationally and six in the top 30. Central Missouri was sixth (2,257) and Washburn was 15th (1,907). The top two teams were Northern State (3,383) and Dixie State (3,081).

The FHSU men saw their home attendance jump by 449 fans per game in 2013-14, as they averaged 2,268 in 2012-13. That created a home-court advantage helping the Tigers to a 12-2 record at Gross Memorial Coliseum last year.

FHSU reached at least 12 wins at home for the seventh-consecutive year, playing an average of 15 contests per year at home in that span. Since FHSU joined NCAA Division II in 1991-92 (23-year span), the Tigers have produced less than 11 wins at home in a season just twice. Since becoming a member of NCAA Division II, FHSU is 310-48 at home, winning 86.6 percent of its games at home. In 41 years of basketball at Gross Memorial Coliseum, FHSU has a staggering record of 544-101, winning 84.3 percent of its home contests.

The Tigers helped the MIAA lead the nation once again in attendance as a conference, averaging 1,319 fans per game. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, also in the Central Region, was second at 1,228 fans per game.

Larks end four-game losing streak with big win in Dodge City

The Hays Larks pound out a season-high 21 hits as they avenge Tuesday’s 12-1 loss to Dodge City with a 12-4 victory Wednesday night at Cavalier Field in Dodge City. The victory snaps a four-game losing streak and moves them to 8-8 in the Jayhawk League and 11-8 overall. Dodge City, who had won eight of their last 12, falls to 9-11 and 4-11 in league play.

The Larks score two in the second and two in the third. Then after a Dodge City three-run homer, came back with a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. They blew the game open with four in the eighth.

Tyler Leffler led the Larks with four hits while while Michael Burns and Cooper Langley both had three hits. Langley, who had two doubles, along with Derrick Mount both drove in three and Tyler Detmer homered.

Blake Roley picks up the win in his first start, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings, striking out two and walking two.

The Larks return home Thursday night to face the Boulder Collegians in a non-league game before taking on El Dorado for three this weekend. Admission is free once again Thursday thanks to the Glassman Corporation. You can hear the game on KAYS beginning at 6:45.

Bases-loaded HBP in 8th helps Dodgers beat KC

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis was facing one of the hottest relievers in baseball with two outs and the bases loaded in a tie game Wednesday night.

Ellis wound up taking one for the team.

He was plunked on the shoulder by Royals reliever Wade Davis, who had not allowed a run since April, and was the go-ahead run in a 5-4 victory over Kansas City.

“Our guys hung in there,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “We got behind. We threw some runs up there. They came back and we kept playing.”

Jamey Wright (3-2) threw 2 2-3 scoreless innings in relief of Dan Haren to pick up the win.

J.P. Howell and Brandon League worked the bottom of the eighth for the Dodgers, and Brian Wilson handled the ninth in place of closer Kenley Jansen for his first save since April 12, 2012.

It wasn’t easy. Danny Valencia hit a one-out single and pinch-runner Pedro Ciriaco stole second — he was initially called out but the call was overturned by replay. But Wilson got Lorenzo Cain to line out to first base, and Ciriaco was doubled off second to end the game.

“The story is more about the bullpen and the guys scratching out the last run,” Haren said. “Today they played great behind me.”

Davis (5-2) had not allowed a run in 22 1-3 innings spanning his last 20 outings. But after nearly escaping a jam by catching Adrian Gonzalez in a rundown between third base and home for the second out of the eighth, the reliever walked Scott Van Slyke to load the bases.

Davis then had a 1-2 count on Ellis before hitting him in the shoulder.

“That’s a tough way to go down right there,” Davis said. “I just tried to make a perfect pitch. It just ran away from him a little bit and came up and hit him.”

Matt Kemp homered and Gonzalez and Yasiel Puig drove in a run apiece for the Dodgers, while Dee Gordon had four hits and his league-leading 40th stolen base.

Cain and Jarrod Dyson hit solo shots for the Royals.

“”They all sting a little, some a little bit worse than others, but they all sting,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We had more than one chance in the ninth inning to pick up some runs, but we just didn’t capitalize on it.”

Haren gave up two homers among six hits, walked two and was pulled after throwing 92 pitches in 4 1-3 innings. The three-time All-Star had gone at least five innings while allowing four earned runs or fewer in his previous 15 starts with the Dodgers, the longest streak by any pitcher to begin his career with the club in the last 100 years.

James Shields wasn’t much better, though he lasted a whole lot longer. After breezing through the first, the Royals’ ace allowed four runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings.

Shields gave away the 1-0 lead that Cain supplied with his leadoff homer when Kemp went deep in the second. Shields then allowed two more runs in the third on consecutive triples by Gordon and Puig — Gordon scored on a balk by Shields — and a groundout by Gonzalez.

The Royals got one back in the fourth on Mike Moustakas’s RBI single, but Los Angeles restored its cushion in the fifth when Gordon singled, swiped second and scored on Puig’s double.

Kansas City finally squared things in the bottom half. Dyson led off with a homer, his first in 277 at-bats, and Billy Butler’s groundout was enough to score Cain from third.

But when the game came down to a battle of bullpens, the Dodgers’ proved to be better.

“Wade is solid all day, every day,” Shields said. “We’re all human, man. It’s going to be tough not to give up runs all year long. He’s so strong mentally and is such a bulldog out there.”

NOTES: The Dodgers selected the contract of 1B Clint Robinson from Triple-A Albuquerque and designated INF Jamie Romak for assignment. … Mattingly said 3B Juan Uribe (hamstring) could be activated Thursday. … The Royals have Thursday off. The Dodgers open a series against St. Louis.

Kershaw pitches Dodgers to win over Royals

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Clayton Kershaw was asked to assess his performance against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night, and the Dodgers ace bemoaned the fact that he didn’t have command of his fastball.

Maybe if he did, he’d have tossed another no-hitter.

Kershaw still managed to follow his first career no-no by going eight marvelous innings, and Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier drove in a run apiece as the Dodgers scraped out a 2-0 victory.

“It definitely wasn’t easy tonight,” Kershaw said.

It only looked that way.

“All night he felt like he was fighting it,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly explained. “His fastball command wasn’t where he wanted it, but typical Clayton.”

Kershaw (8-2) allowed six hits and a walk while striking out eight. The two-time Cy Young winner hasn’t allowed a run in 21 1-3 innings, spanning his near-perfect game against Colorado on Wednesday — the only runner occurred on an error — and his previous start against Arizona.

Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save.

Danny Duffy (4-7) dueled admirably with Kershaw for six innings, allowing one run on four hits and four walks. But the left-hander was done in by a high pitch count, needing a season-high 105, and was eventually lifted to protect his surgically repaired shoulder.

Eric Hosmer had a pair of hits for the Royals, the first with one out in the first inning to end any thought of Kershaw tossing consecutive no-hitters. Otherwise, their offense was sporadic, unable to string together enough runners to pose much of a threat.

“He’s as good as advertised, that’s for sure, every bit of it,” Hosmer said. “He’s definitely got his game plan, which he sticks to the whole time. He’s got four well-above average pitches. The main thing about him is he gets ahead and attacks you early. That’s a guy you don’t want to get behind on with great off-speed and a fastball that he can hump to 95, 96. Luckily, that’s the last time we face him.”

The Dodgers plated their first run after Justin Turner tripled to lead off the game. He scored on a hard grounder by Gonzalez, which deflected off Duffy and toward second base for what nearly ended up being the game’s only run.

Ethier’s RBI single came off reliever Kelvin Herrera in the ninth inning.

Duffy needed 29 pitches to survive the first, and he wiggled out of jams each of the next four innings, too. But while he was gritty enough to keep Kansas City in the game, a lineup that has struggled to put up runs for the last week failed him again.

Kansas City has only scored 13 times while losing five of its last six.

Los Angeles had lost all four of its games played at Kauffman Stadium, including the series opener Monday night, when the Royals beat up on Zack Greinke, their former ace.

They had a much tougher time handling Kershaw.

Showcasing his mid-90s fastball, power curveball and devastating slider, Kershaw at one point retired eight straight. And even when he ran into trouble, he slipped right out of it.

Kershaw induced a double play after Hosmer’s single in the first. He rallied from a 3-0 count to Alex Gordon to strike him out with a runner aboard in the sixth. In the seventh, he got Justin Maxwell and Alcides Escobar on groundouts to leave a pair of runners on base.

“That’s the best slider we’ve seen all year long,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “That thing had teeth with a bite.”

In fact, the biggest blight on Kershaw’s night may have been his walk to Gordon in the fifth inning. It was only the second he’d allowed to a left-handed hitter this season.

“I made some pitches when I had to,” Kershaw said. “Tonight I was making a lot more stressful pitches. The no-hitter was stressful for more personal reasons.”

NOTES: Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez (sore right shoulder) was scratched from the starting lineup. “Hopefully we’ll have him tomorrow,” Mattingly said. … The Royals activated LHP Bruce Chen (bulging disc) from the 60-day DL, optioned LHP Tim Collins to Triple-A Omaha and designated LHP Donnie Joseph for assignment. … Dodgers RHP Dan Haren faces Royals RHP James Shields in Wednesday night’s series finale.

Larks drop fourth straight

Dodge City took advantage of three Larks errors, scoring eight unearned runs over the first three innings and defeat Hays 12-1 Tuesday night at Larks Park. The Larks have lost eight of their last 10 including four straight for the first time since 2010. They are now 10-8 overall and 7-8 in the Jayhawk League. Dodge City has won eight of 10 and improve to 9-10 and 4-10 in league play.

Frank Leo Postgame Interview

A dropped foul ball by second baseman Derrick Mount on the first at-bat of the game opened the door for two unearned runs in the first inning. A two-out error by third baseman Kevin Czarnecki followed by three straight singles led to two more unearned runs in the second.

The A’s blew the game open with third, scoring four unearned runs. After striking out the leadoff batter, David Koll walked three straight to load the bases. with two outs, Kevin Czarnecki couldn’t handle a chopper allowing a run to score. The A’s followed with two singles and an 8-1 lead.

Koll allowed the eight runs, all unearned, on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out four.

A’s starter Matt Ray held the Larks to one run on five hits over five innings. Matt Gunderson pitched four shutout innings, allowing just two hits, for the save.

The two teams meet again Wednesday night in Dodge City. Hays then returns home for five straight beginning Thursday against Boulder who was rained out Tuesday at El Dorado.
