Cain and Gordon homer as Royals beat Blue Jays

By IAN HARRISON
Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) — When Jason Vargas snuffed out a Toronto rally in the first inning, it gave the Kansas City Royals an early lift, one they carried all the way to a second straight win over the Blue Jays.

Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain homered, Vargas won for the first time in three starts and the Royals beat the Blue Jays 6-1 on Friday night.

Vargas (5-2) allowed one run and seven hits in six innings, walked three and struck out seven. He is 2-0 with a 1.60 ERA in six road starts this season.

Vargas allowed a leadoff triple to Jose Reyes in the first, but Reyes had to hold at third on Melky Cabrera’s fly ball to right. Jose Bautista followed with a walk, but Vargas got out of it by getting Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie to fly out.

“I feel something like that hopefully sets the tone for the game and fires us up,” Vargas said. “We were able to get a run the next inning and keep it moving from there.”

Vargas kept on turning the Blue Jays away whenever they put men on base. Toronto finished 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 runners.

“Vargas keeps you off balance,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “If you’re sitting on a pitch, you don’t get it. We had some shots but he was better.”

Cain went 3 for 4 and matched a career high with four RBIs, and Gordon reached base three times as the Royals handed Toronto its second consecutive loss following a season-best nine-game winning streak.

“This is more of the offense that we envisioned coming out of spring training,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We’re not going to be a club that’s going to lead the league in home runs but we’ve got home run power that we haven’t used.”

The home runs were the 23rd and 24th of the season for the Royals, whose total is the lowest in the majors.

Aaron Crow worked the seventh and Kevin Herrera pitched the final two innings, striking out Dioner Navarro for the final out and stranding runners at first and second.

Cain got the Royals on the board with an RBI single off left-hander J.A. Happ in the second, and Gordon followed Butler’s leadoff single by homering on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth.

Bautista replied with a two-out homer in the fifth, but the Royals restored their three-run lead in the sixth. Gordon drew a one-out walk and was almost caught stealing but ended up at second after first baseman Encarnacion dropped Happ’s pickoff throw. The mistake proved costly when Cain drove in Gordon with a two-out single.

Kansas City chased Happ and capped the scoring in the eighth on Cain’s two-out homer.

Happ (4-2) lost for the first time in four starts, allowing a season-worst six runs in 7 2-3 innings. He walked two and struck out six.

“They put some good swings on me,” Happ said. “They were aggressive and they definitely made me pay for my mistakes.”

For the second straight game, Bautista threw out a runner at first from right field. After getting Billy Butler on Thursday, Bautista slid to corral Infante’s shallow fly and gunned a throw to first in the seventh after Infante didn’t initially run out of the box.

“I don’t know if you’ll see a better play in baseball today than that play right there,” Yost said. “Omar hit the ball and lost it, he thought it was foul. For Bautista to come, smother the ball, one, and then still see that he had a play at first base, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a play like that. Tremendous play.”

NOTES: 3B Danny Valencia returned to Kansas City’s lineup after missing the past five games with a sore left hand. … Toronto selected RHP Bobby Korecky from Triple-A Buffalo before the game and optioned LHP Rob Rasmussen to Triple-A. Korecky was designated for assignment following the game and RHP Marcus Stroman was recalled from Buffalo to start Saturday, with RHP Drew Hutchison pushed back to Tuesday for extra rest. … The Royals intend to recall RHP Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Omaha to start against the Blue Jays on Saturday. Brooks will pitch in place of RHP Yordano Ventura, who left his last start with a sore elbow. … Ventura played catch Friday and will throw a light bullpen Saturday.

Hays Post

The Hays High softball team seemed to be in control of their state quarterfinal game in Manhattan on Thursday. That is until the 6th inning. Leading 4-0 into the top of the 6th, Hannah Hearld walked the lead-off hitter and then allowed three straight singles which produced three runs. Madison Prough relieved Hearld but managed to record just one out before Hearld returned. Kapaun took a 5-4 lead on a controversial call at the plate and eventually led 6-4 before Hays could retire the side.

Albany Schaffer led off the bottom of the 6th with a double, but Hays couldn’t take advantage of the hit stranding her at third base. The Crusaders tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 7th that proved to be the difference.

Trailing 7-4, Hays took advantage of two Kapaun errors to score a run and load the bases.  Hays trailed 7-6 after a ground out, but couldn’t drive in the tying run from third base with two outs.

Hearld allows four runs (three earned) on two hits striking out 11 but walking six over 6 2/3 innings and takes the loss. She also had two hits and one of the Indians four RBI’s in the game.

Russell/Victoria advances in 4A DII baseball

Russell/Victoria advances to the semifinals in 4A Division II after an 11-2 win over Wichita’s Trinity Academy Thursday in Pratt.

The sixth-seeded Broncos jumped out to the early lead, scoring three in the first then added two in the third, three in the fourth and three in the sixth.

Taylor Rome goes all seven and picks up the win, allowing six hits while striking out nine.

Kaden Rohr had three of their 14 hits including a double and triple.

Russell/Victoria improves to 15-8 and will play the No. 7 seed Bishop Ward from Kansas City at 1:30 Friday afternoon. The Cyclones upset the No. 2 seed Burlington 12-2.

Perry-Lecompton and Baxter Springs were the winners on the other half of the bracket and will play at 11am Friday.

Royals shake up coaching staff amid offensive funk

By DAVE SKRETTA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – They Royals shook up their coaching staff Thursday in an attempt to jumpstart their failing offense, appointing Dale Sveum (swaym) as the hitting coach and making Mike Jirschele their third base coach.

Pedro Grifol, who took over as hitting coach last season, will now instruct catchers.

The moves were announced after the Royals finished off a disastrous homestand that included a sweep at the hands of Houston, and before they opened a four-game series in Toronto.

The Royals began the day last in the majors by a wide margin with 21 homers, and in the bottom third of the league in runs, on-base percentage and several other statistical categories.

Hays Monarchs American Legion opens season with sweep

The Hays Monarchs American Legion baseball team opened their season with a pair of run-rule wins over Lincoln Wednesday night at the TMP field. The Monarchs win 9-0 and 9-1 to start their season 2-0.

The Monarchs scored one in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth in the first game. They blew it open with a five-run sixth. Cameron Brin and Braiden Werth both had three hits. Brin, Werth and Ryan Schippers all drove in two. Werth and Cameron Brin both pitched three innings.

In the second game, the Monarchs scored two in the first, one in the third then six in the fourth. Justin Pfeifer and Jordan Gottschalk both had two hits and two runs batted in. Liam Stults pitched three innings and Jared Vitztum two.

The Monarchs are off until Monday when they face the Hays Eagles Senior American Legion in a 6pm doubleheader at Larks Park.

Royals swept by Houston

By ROBERT FALKOFF
Special to MLB.com

KANSAS CITY — Danny Duffy’s last two starts at Kauffman Stadium represent a study in contrasts. On May 17 against Baltimore, when he was perfect through 6 2/3 innings, almost everything went right for Duffy. But on Wednesday against the Astros, almost everything went wrong.

The Royals left-hander, experiencing what manager Ned Yost called “a little dead arm,” gave up five runs through the opening three innings and the Astros were off and running toward a 9-3 victory and a sweep of the three-game series.

Two batters deep into the game, Duffy was down by two runs. He induced leadoff hitter Jose Altuveto dribble a grounder to shortstop Alcides Escobar, but first baseman Eric Hosmer couldn’t handle the throw and was charged with an error. Then George Springer followed with a two-run homer and, just like that, Houston was on its way.

It never really got better for Duffy, who huffed and puffed to throw his fastball in the 88-92 mph range. Dexter Fowler’s two-run single in the second made it 4-0, and it was shades of Monday night, when the Astros also roughed up hard-throwing Yordano Ventura in the early going.

“A very frustrating outing,” Duffy said. “It was like trying to throw the ball through the pool. That happens to everyone, and I just have to battle through it.”

Duffy was quick to emphasize that he didn’t feel the dead-arm issue was the primary reason why he lasted only four innings plus two batters, surrendering seven hits and six runs (five earned) while walking five and striking out only three.

“I made horrible pitches to people who have some pop,” Duffy said. “My command today was hogwash. That was one of the worst outings I’ve had in a long time.”

Given the way Kansas City’s offense has struggled recently, the early 5-0 deficit seemed akin to climbing Mount Everest.

The Astros arrived on Memorial Day 13 games under .500, but certainly didn’t look like cellar dwellers in outscoring the Royals, 21-5, over a three-day span.

“They outplayed us, plain and simple,” Yost said.

The Royals (24-28) have dropped four in a row and seven of nine. They left left town late Wednesday contemplating how to turn it around with 12 consecutive games looming against plus-.500 competition.

“We’re going to have to get this figured out quick, or we’re going to be in trouble,” Yost said.

Although Ventura and Duffy struggled in the Houston series, the starting pitching isn’t what concerns Yost moving forward. Priority No. 1 is finding a more consistent offense to take some pressure off the starting rotation and the bullpen.

Power discrepancy continues to be a big problem for the Royals as Houston slugged three homers on Wednesday, two of them coming from Chris Carter in the fifth and sixth innings. The Royals got only their 21st homer all season when Brett Hayes — who snapped an 0-for-27 hitless streak to start the season with a single earlier — went deep in the seventh. But by then, the Astros were comfortably in command.

“It was just a bad series, and unfortunately it happened at home,” said designated hitter Billy Butler. “I don’t think it’s one thing [with the offense]. It’ll eventually work itself out. There’s not one guy in the lineup that’s hitting the ball well. We’re just cold. It’s a frustrating thing. We’re all battling, but it’s just not happening.”

Astros starter Jarred Cosart wasn’t particularly sharp, falling behind numerous hitters and requiring 95 pitches to get through five innings. The Royals snapped a 15-inning scoreless streak on Escobar’s RBI single in the fourth. Carter’s solo homer made it 6-1 in the fifth, but the Royals still had hopes of a comeback after Omar Infante’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.

Houston applied the crusher in the sixth, when Louis Coleman surrendered a three-run homer to Carter, who came into the game hitting .192.

“Carter got two pitches out front,” Houston manager Bo Porter said. “If he touches them out front, with his strength and bat speed, there aren’t many ballparks that can hold him.”

The Royals are now 10-16 in May but can take some solace in knowing that they bounced back nicely from an 8-20 record in May last season and competed for a playoff spot until the final week.

“We just snapped out of it,” Yost said. “There was nothing that was said, nothing that was done. We came back from the All-Star break and we were a different team. Something clicked. It can happen here again. Screaming and yelling doesn’t work. You have to continue to identify the issues and work hard every day to get more consistent at the plate.”

McHugh shuts down Royals, Astros roll to win

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Collin McHugh held light-hitting Kansas City at bay over seven innings, and Matt Dominquez drove in the only run the Houston Astros needed in a 3-0 victory over the Royals on Tuesday night.

Houston tacked on two more runs off reliever Tim Collins in the eighth, and Tony Sipp and Chad Qualls breezed through the final two innings without allowing a hit to complete the shutout.

McHugh (3-3) scattered five hits while striking out nine without issuing a walk to earn his first win in five starts. He stranded a runner at third base in the second inning and runners at second and third in the fifth, but otherwise cruised through the Kansas City lineup.

The only run Jeremy Guthrie (2-4) allowed came when Dominquez followed up a pair of one-out walks to Dexter Fowler and Jason Castro with a single in the fourth inning.
