K-State grants Romero transfer release

Kansas State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Athletics Director John Currie announced today that women’s basketball student-athlete Leticia Romero has been granted a release as a result of a newly modified institutional policy. The K-State Athletics Board of Directors approved a recommendation by Currie to retroactively apply the amended policy, which will permit Romero to transfer and be eligible for athletics aid at any institution under NCAA Bylaw 13.1.1.3, with the exception of Big 12 institutions.

In a letter to President Kirk Schulz (see attached), Currie recommended an addition to the university transfer release appeals procedure to provide more flexibility to the Athletics Director to release a student-athlete if new information or circumstances warrant. The KSA Board of Directors met earlier this morning and adopted this recommendation along with updated language to the athletics department’s transfer release policy to better reflect the practice of the department in recent years (see attached).

“We appreciate the support of K-State fans during this time and wish Leticia all the best in her future pursuits,” said Currie.

The Astros have won three straight, matching their longest winning streak this season, and snapped a six-game losing streak to the Royals.

Springer led off the eighth with a home run off Louis Coleman, his fifth homer in four games. He is the first Houston rookie to homer in four straight games.

Springer also had two doubles and became the first Astro to score five runs in a game since Cody Ransom on Sept. 24, 2007 against St. Louis.

Scott Feldman (3-2) held the Royals to two runs and eight hits over six innings.

Royals RHP Ventura leaves with elbow discomfort
Royals rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura has left Kansas City’s game against the Houston Astros with elbow discomfort.

Ventura departed after Jose Altuve fouled off a pitch in the third inning Monday night.

Manager Ned Yost and trainer Nick Kenney went to the mound and Ventura was led off without attempting another pitch. He was replaced by Michael Mariot.

Ventura will have a MRI Tuesday.

He faced 18 batters in 2 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks.

Ventura, whose fastball routinely hits 100 mph, was 2-4 with a 3.45 ERA coming into the game.

Royals 2B Infante activated off the DL
The Kansas City Royals activated second baseman Omar Infante off the disabled list before their Monday night game and started him against the Houston Astros.

Infante, who has been shelved since May 7 with a lower back injury, went 4-for-11, .363, in a three-game rehab stint with Triple-A Omaha. Infante hit .267 with 19 RBIs in 30 games with Kansas City before the injury.

The Royals optioned right-hander Casey Coleman, who did not allow a run in two relief appearances in 2 2/3 innings, to Omaha.

Chiefs OLB Ford looks good at rookie minicamp

By HERBIE TEOPE
Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs coach Andy Reid says outside linebacker Dee Ford showed impressive athleticism during the team’s three-day rookie minicamp.

Kansas City selected Ford with the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft. Ford played his college ball at Auburn, where he had 20 1/2 sacks and 27 1/2 tackles for loss in 52 games.

Ford is transitioning from defensive end with the Tigers to outside linebacker with the Chiefs. Reid says Ford has done a great job of learning the defense and his new position.

Ford gives Kansas City another pass rusher after the Chiefs had 47 sacks last season, tied for sixth in the NFL. Reid says Ford “brings a lot of energy.”

The rookie minicamp ended on Monday.

Michael Kohn (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning. Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his sixth save, retiring Alcides Escobar on a popup with a runner on third.

FHSU’s Wolf 6th in women’s javelin; Tien 10th in pole vault at DII national meet

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State’s Madison Wolf concluded a great freshman campaign on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Mich. with a sixth-place finish in the women’s javelin. With that finish, she earned All-America honors for the 2014 season.

Wolf’s best effort came on her second throw of the competition, a throw of 153′ 7″. At that point in time, she was in second place behind Mary Riley of Central Missouri. She held that position through three attempts for all athletes, but the fourth attempt for three competitors pushed her back to fifth in the standings and then to sixth following the final attempts.

Sophomore teammates from Western Washington, Bethany Drake and Katie Reichert, finished first and second separated by just one inch. Drake threw 165′ 3″ and Reichert threw 165′ 2″. Riley of Central Missouri was third at 163′. The top four competitors all threw at least 160′.

Wolf adds the All-America honor after winning the MIAA Championship, topping Riley a few weeks back for the conference crown.

Wolf was one of two FHSU women to compete at the NCAA Championships. Samantha Woodburn had a pair of 14th-place finishes in the 100 and 200-meter prelims, Thursday and Friday. She was unable to qualify for the finals on Sunday.

Fort Hays State junior Brady Tien was the only member of the men’s track and field team to compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Mich. on Saturday. Tien finished 10th in the pole vault, tying the fifth-best height cleared but was 10th due to the amount of attempts needed to clear the height.

Tien stayed alive among the top 10 performers in the event by clearing his personal best height of 16′ 8.75″ on his third and final attempt at the height. He attempted to clear 17′ 0.75″, but was unsuccessful on three tries. Due to the ninth-place finisher clearing the first height in just one attempt and Tien taking two attempts, Tien slipped to 10th. The eighth-place finisher cleared 16′ 8.75″ on his second attempt and a pair that tied for sixth cleared it on their first attempt before all missing at the next height.

Jeff Pipenbrink of Pittsburg State won the national title in the event with a height of 17′ 4.5″.

By JOE RESNICK
Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Eric Hosmer tied a season high with four hits, pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson scored the go-ahead run in the 13th inning on a throwing error by rookie reliever Mike Morin, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 on Saturday night.

Danny Valencia led off the 13th inning with a double off the fence in left-center. Dyson went into run for him and scored when Morin (0-1) fielded Alcides Escobar’s sacrifice bunt and threw the ball past first base as Dyson came home. Nori Aoki hit an RBI single and Billy Butler capped the scoring with his second sacrifice fly.

Aaron Crow (2-1) pitched two innings for the victory and Greg Holland got three outs for the save, ending the 4 hour, 53-minute marathon.

Chiefs sign first-round pick Dee Ford

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed first-round pick Dee Ford on Saturday, putting the final player from this year’s draft class under contract as the team began a three-day rookie minicamp.

Ford played defensive end at Auburn but the Chiefs view him as a pass-rushing outside linebacker, one who can complement Pro Bowl selections Tamba Hali and Justin Houston this season and potentially replace one of them next season.

He was the No. 23 overall pick in this year’s draft.

While the Chiefs did not disclose terms of his contract, the current salary structure leaves little room for surprise. All deals for draft choices are four years, and Ford will receive about $8 million total. The Chiefs also hold a fifth year option because he was a first-round pick.
