TMP-Marian sends five individuals and a relay to state

The TMP-Marian boys qualify four individuals and one relay while the girls have one individual moving on from the Phillipsburg 3A Regional track and field meet Friday.

Ryan Mayorga was the Monarchs lone champ, winning the high jump (6-04). Cameron Fouts finished second in the javelin (173-07) and Sam Dreiling was second in the pole vault (13-06). Aaron Moore qualified for state after finishing fourth in the discus (140-09) an the 4×800 relay team of Andrew Hess, Tyler Rueschhoff, Matthew Mindrup and Austin Dinkel also qualified after a fourth-place finish.

The lone Lady Monarch to move on to state was Melissa Pfeifer who finished fourth in the 800 (2:27.55).

 

 

La Crosse wins third straight track regional; Victoria sends six to state

The La Crosse boys track and field team used a strong showing in the field events to win their third straight 1A regional track and field meet at Lewis Field in Hays. The Leopards scored 85 points and finished 23 ahead of second place Wallace County. Grainfield-Wheatland won the girls title with 69 points. Quinter finished second with 52.

The Leopards had only three first place finishes. The 4×100 relay team of Andrew Jay, Taylor Yohe, Marshall Jay and Lucas Moeder brought home gold as did Sheldon Schmidt in the shot put and Moeder in the javelin. Cole Kershner was second in the shot as was Moeder in the discus. Marshall Jay also finished second in the triple jump. The 4×400 relay team finished third.

Otis-Bison’s Jordan Hoffman won three events, taking the 100, 200 and 400. Stockton’s Jaden Williams won the 100 and 300 hurdles while teammates Reed Stephens won the 800 and Kian Coffey the triple jump.

Victoria’s Connor Gagnon won the long jump and Clayton Roth the triple jump. Roth was also fourth in the 300 hurdles. Jayden Newbold finished second in the long jump and was a part of the fourth-place 4×400 relay team which included Julie and Audra Nowak and Karly Oberle.

Duetscher leads Ellis girls’ at Smith Center 2A Regional track

Alexcia Duetscher brought home two first-place finishes and two third’s to lead the Ellis girls’ track and field team at the Smith Center 2A Regional Friday. Duetscher won the high jump and long jump and finished third in the 200 meters and 300 hurdles and qualifies for state in all four events.

Kaliegh Sonenson won the pole vault while teammates Ashley Mattheyer was second in the high jump, Rachel Keller third in the shot put and Sydney Gottschalk fourth in the pole vault.

The Railer boys were led by Jared Pfeifer who qualified in four events, finishing third in the long jump and fourth in the 110 and 300 hurdles and was on the fourth-place 4×400 relay team along with Sean Lee, Brendon Brenner and Landon Younger.

Brandon Groff finished fourth in the javelin to also qualify to state for Ellis.

Plainville’s Hadley Gillum wins the discus and Dylan Wiesner the javelin and the 4×100 relay also brought home a gold medal. The 4×400 relay finished second.

Trego’s Devon Ghumm finished second in the shot put and the girls’ 4×800 relay team finished fourth.

Trout, Iannetta hit HRs in Angels’ win over Royals

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout homered and threw out a runner at third base, Chris Iannetta also went deep, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 Friday night.

C.J. Wilson (6-3) allowed a run and four hits in 6 1-3 innings, striking out three and walking four. Wilson also hit two batters, including leadoff man Nori Aoki with his 105th and final pitch. Aoki had two singles and a double.

The Angels won for the 11th time in 14 games and are a season-best seven games over .500.

Danny Duffy (2-4) gave up five runs and nine hits over six innings in his fourth start since he began filling in for Bruce Chen, who has a sore back. The 25-year-old left-hander was coming off a 1-0 victory against Baltimore.

FHSU’s Woodburn finishes 14th in 200 meter prelims at NCAA Championships

Fort Hays State junior sprinter Samantha Woodburn finished 14th in the prelims of the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Mich., on Friday. She posted a time of 24.34 seconds, .29 seconds off the ninth-place finisher.

Woodburn finished 14th in both the 100 and 200-meter prelims at the NCAA Championships. She set new school records in both events this year (11.71 seconds in the 100 and 23.95 seconds in the 200) and earned All-MIAA honors in both events.

TMP-Marian girls’ soccer advances to state quarterfinals

The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team will continue their best season in school history after defeating Rose Hill 2-1 on penalty kicks Thursday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. The wins improves to Monarchs to 7-2-2 and advances them to the 4-1A state quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

Annika Applequist scored the Monarchs lone goal in regulation giving TMP a 1-0 lead at the half. The Rockets tied the match less than three minutes into the second half.

The two teams then went scoreless through four overtime periods and were tied 3-3 after the first round of penalty kicks. The Monarchs finally win it on the second round of penalty kicks with senior Emily Glover scoring the game winner.

TMP will now face either Winfield, Trinity Academy or Topeka Hayden in the state quarterfinals Tuesday. Winfield (16-1) defeated Buhler 4-1 to win the South Central Regional 1. Trinity Academy (13-3-1) knocked off McPherson 7-0 to take the SC Regional 2 and Topeka Hayden (12-6) was a 2-0 winner over Andover Central to win the SC Regional 4.

The winners of Tuesday’s matches advance to the state semifinals May 30 and 31 in Kansas City.

HHS girls’ soccer falls short in overtime in regional finals

The magical run for the Hays High girls’ soccer team came to an end Thursday, as the Indians fall 2-1 in overtime to Goddard-Eisenhower in the South Central Regional 3 finals.

The Tigers broke the 1-1 tie with a goal less than a minute into the overtime period.

Eisenhower struck first with a goal 12 minutes into the match. Talyn Kleweno tied the contest 1-1 a little over three minutes later and it would stay that way throughout the rest of regulation.

The Indians end their season, which included seven straight wins and nine straight matches without a loss, at 13-4-1.

Fort Hays State junior sprinter Samantha finished 14th in the prelims of the 100 meter dash at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday (May 22) in Allendale, Mich. She tied her school record mark of 11.71 seconds.

Woodburn will not advance to the finals on Saturday, but she gets another shot at making a final on Friday when she competes in the prelims of the 200 meter dash. She was just .09 seconds from making the final in the 100 meters.

HHS softball draws No. 3 seed; Kapuan Mt. Carmel at 5A state tourney

The Hays High softball team is the No. 3 seed for next week’s 5A state softball tournament at the Twin Oaks Complex in Manhattan. The 18-4 Indians will face Wichita’s Kapaun Mt. Carmel (16-6) in the opening round at 7pm.

Unbeaten Topeka-Seaman is the No. 1 seed with undefeated Bishop Carroll the No. 2 seed.

Royals send Moustakas to Omaha

A little over a week after manager Ned Yost said they would not send Mike Moustakas down to the minors, the Kansas City Royals announced today that the struggling third baseman is being optioned to Omaha. Infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes will be recalled prior to Friday’s game in Anaheim.

Moustakas, who only made one pinch-hit appearance in the recently completed series with the Chicago White Sox, is hitting just .152 (19-for-125) in 40 games this season.

The 25-year-old Paredes has played in four games with the Royals this season, going 0-for-1 with two runs scored and two stolen bases as a pinch runner.  He is hitting .327 (35-for-107) with 4 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homers and 17 RBI in 26 games with the Storm Chasers.

The Hays High softball team is headed to the 5A state tournament after a 3-0 victory over Great Bend in the regional championship on Wednesday evening in Great Bend.

Albany Schaffer knocked in Nicole Dinkel on a two-out single in the sixth break a scoreless tie and give the Indians the lead. Dinkel scored again in the seventh on a Haley Wells single to grab a 2-0 lead. Wells scored the Indian’s third run of the game later in the inning on a Tessa Stickel single.

Hannah Hearld picked up the victory, striking out nine.

Earlier in the day, the Indians beat Goddard-Eisenhower 9-4 to reach the regional championship game. Hays scored four in the bottom of the sixth to break open a one-run game. Hearld struck out only one in the complete game victory but homered and drove in three. Madison Prough also had three RBI’s. Albany Schaffer and Haley Wells both had three hits.

The Indians are now 18-4 on the season and will play next Thursday in Manhattan in the 5A state tournament.

Ellis baseball headed to state

The Ellis baseball team is headed to state. The Railers beat Herington 12-6 then knocked off Lincoln 15-0 in three innings to win the Lincoln 2-1A Regional.

Ellis scored three in the first, nine in the second and three in the third in the title game. Clayton Feik went 2-for-3 and drove in four. Dalton Hensley had three RBIs. Brandon Bollig struck out six of the 12 batters he faced.

Ellis took control of the first game early as well, scoring three runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings against Herington. Easton Smith struck out eight in the complete game win. Brevin LaBarge went 2-for-4 and drove in four.

The Railers improve to 11-8 and will play on Thursday at the 2-1A state tournament in Great Bend.
